POSSIBILITIES GALA IN SUPPORT OF DASCH | JUNE 7, 2019 | RBC CONVENTION CENTRE | WINNIPEG 2

Direct Action In Support of Community Homes (DASCH) is a non-profit organization established in 1974 to provide meaningful residential, vocational and leisure programs within the community to persons with intellectual disabilities by addressing their individual, physical, emotional, social, and educational needs. DASCH supports people living in over 50 homes throughout Winnipeg and is truly committed to enhancing and uplifting the lives of the people it supports through education, awareness, understanding and the highest degree of respect for all.

Following the philosophy of community inclusion, every person is provided the opportunity to fully participate in community life. Our services are about improving peoples’ quality of life by providing the following support:

RESIDENTIAL: Every house that DASCH owns is attractive and well-maintained, located in community neighbourhoods to ensure these places become homes to the people we support. Each home has a trained and qualified staff team that provides person-centered support 24 hours a day. A vehicle per home ensures that everyone has access to their community’s resources, their pursuits, and enjoyment.

INDIGENOUS CULTURAL AND SPIRITUAL ENHANCEMENT PROGRAM (ICSEP): ICSEP aims to provide clients and employees with a chance to connect to the Indigenous culture through experiencing and participating in traditional activities such as drumming, crafting and maintaining a healing garden.

SPECIALIZED SUPPORT & RESOURCE SERVICES (SSRS): Specialized Support and Resource Services (SSRS) professionals assess individual behavioural needs and offer the person, their family and caregivers support such as behavioural intervention, training, and counselling in order to integrate with the community and cope with life events.

DAY SERVICES: With a focus on the individual, Day Services provide every participant with activities that are tailored to their vocational and recreational interests and needs. DASCH provides transportation to and from destinations, work or volunteer placements.

DASCH also manages ‘The Scrap Came Back,’ an upcycled gift shop, and workshop. Our store is operated by people within DASCH as part of the opportunity to develop and hone their skills in the workforce. We focus on upcycling items that typically head to the landfill and make beautiful, one-of-a-kind art.

POSSIBILITIES GALA IN SUPPORT OF DASCH | JUNE 7, 2019 | RBC CONVENTION CENTRE | WINNIPEG3

GALA FUNDRAISER Since its inception in 2001, the Possibilities Gala, the signature fundraiser for DASCH has raised over $500,000 thanks to the generous support of individuals and businesses. Join us on Friday, June 7, 2019 at the RBC Convention Centre, 375 York Avenue in Winnipeg as we honour Winnipeg Jet Alum and Ottawa Sports Hall of Fame Inductee Jim Kyte with the 2019 DASCH Recognition Award. This award is presented to an individual, organization or corporation making significant contributions to the well-being of children, youth and adults with intellectual disabilities provincially, nationally and globally. Jim will share his story of triumph and success as the first deaf hockey player to join the National Hockey League.

In addition, the DASCH Merit Award will be presented at the Gala to an individual whom DASCH supports in recognition of their outstanding accomplishments and perseverance. The 2019 DASCH Merit Award recipient is Craig Wakeford. The evening will include a pre-event reception, dinner, entertainment by the Big City All Star Band and auction.

All funds raised from the Gala will go towards the following in order to enhance community engagement and the quality of life for individuals supported by DASCH:

• The purchase and improvements of homes including indoor/outdoor furniture, décor, barbecues, decks, gardens;

• Opportunities to experience arts and culture (e.g., exposure to community sporting and cultural events, support for Indigenous Cultural and Spiritual Care Leader positions);

• Development of sensory rooms to meet the unique sensory needs of individuals;

• Employment training and education;

• Adaptive equipment.

POSSIBILITIES GALA IN SUPPORT OF DASCH | JUNE 7, 2019 | RBC CONVENTION CENTRE | WINNIPEG 6

As the first round draft pick of the Winnipeg Jets in 1982, Jim Kyte enjoyed a 17-year professional hockey career, including 13 seasons in the National Hockey League (NHL) with Winnipeg, Pittsburgh, Calgary, Ottawa and San Jose.

The Ottawa native is the only legally deaf player to play in the history of the NHL. He was twice nominated for the NHL Masterston Trophy. This is awarded annually to a National Hockey League player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to ice hockey. Jim has long been recognized for his community service. While playing for the Jets, he was nominated for the NHL’s King Clancy Memorial Trophy. This is awarded annually to a National Hockey League player who best exemplifies leadership qualities on and off the ice and who has made a significant humanitarian contribution to his community.

After sustaining a career-ending injury in an auto accident, Jim retired from hockey in the summer of 1998. He remains an active member of the NHL Alumni Association, including the Ottawa Senators Alumni Executive. After creating the very successful Sport Business Management postgraduate program at Algonquin College in 2002, Jim became the Academic Chair of the Marketing & Management Studies Department in the Algonquin College School of Business in 2007. Today, with a rich and varied background in professional sport, hospitality, event management and education, Jim leads dynamic faculty and staff as the Dean of the School of Hospitality, Tourism and Culinary Arts at Algonquin College.

Jim earned a Master of Business Administration from Royal Roads University in 2012 where his performance was acknowledged with the bestowing of two academic awards: 2012 Governor General’s Academic Gold Medal

for the best thesis or graduate project and 2012-13 Chancellor’s Award for having achieved the highest academic performance in the MBA program.

To Jim, playing in the NHL is a gift that keeps on giving. Jim was a proud member of a Team Canada Mission in 2015 visiting Canadian military personnel on the HMCS Winnipeg while docked in Belfast, and Operation IMPACT personnel at two bases in Kuwait. In October 2016, Jim proudly played for the Winnipeg Jets Alumni in the NHL Heritage Classic Alumni Game as they took on the Edmonton Oilers.

Jim was recognized as a Fellow of the Ontario Hostelry Institute in April 2017. In July, he was a lucky participant in the Canada C3 Expedition celebrating Canada’s sesquicentennial. Jim played in the Ottawa Senators’ Alumni 25th Anniversary Game on Parliament Hill as part of the NHL100 Weekend in December 2017.

In January 2018, the Canadian Board Diversity Council (CBDC), the leading Canadian organization advancing diversity on Canada’s boards, selected Jim to their Diversity 50 cohort. In May, he proudly became Honourary Colonel of the 76 Communication Regiment in the Canadian Armed Forces and was inducted as an athlete into the Ottawa Sports Hall of Fame in June. The Canadian Foundation for Physically Disabled Persons inducted Jim into the Canadian Disability Hall of Fame in October 2018. The Hall of Fame provides permanent recognition of outstanding Canadians who have made extraordinary contributions to enriching the quality of life for people with physical disabilities.

Jim and his wife Nancy live in Ottawa, have been married for 25 years and have three sons: Hayden (24), Wyatt (24) and Owen (23).

POSSIBILITIES GALA IN SUPPORT OF DASCH | JUNE 7, 2019 | RBC CONVENTION CENTRE | WINNIPEG 8

Craig Wakeford has been with DASCH for 14 years and lives at the St. Dunstan home.

To know Craig is to love him. He is a friendly man, who likes to be involved in both conversations and activities.

Craig really enjoys his travelling adventures with his St. Dunstan housemates, whose journeys have taken them to exciting places like Disneyland, Cancun, Nashville and other places over the years. He loves to share stories about his adventures, especially about his trips to see the Dukes of Hazzard car and loves showing off pictures of the Dukes’ car whenever he can. Craig is also a huge sports fan. He loves watching the Bombers, Jets and Goldeyes.

Not one to sit still, Craig is a multi-talented athlete who has been involved with Special Olympics in golf, bowling, swimming, curling and soccer, winning medals on the national and international stage. He was awarded the Special Olympics Male Athlete of the Year in 2009. Craig has worked at MTS for the past 25 years, doing several clerical jobs. He is dedicated and hardworking and loves to impress everyone with his amazing memory of sports figures and their careers.

An athlete, dedicated worker, who is well-rounded, kind and helpful to everyone he meets, DASCH is thrilled to honour Craig Wakeford as the 2019 DASCH Merit Award recipient.
