President's Message

What a surprise! One week before Super Conference 2013 I broke my leg playing hockey. As I sat onthe ice looking at my sadly twisted foot, my first thought was, “I think I just twisted my ankle, I can still goto Super Conference!” Unfortunately that was not the case. I’m going to make up for it next yearthough!

Like many unexpected events my broken leg has taught me some important lessons. One is that ittakes a team to get things done. The other is that, in 2013, we are blessed with amazing technologicaltools that can keep us connected, even when confined to the couch.

As OPLA President I’m proud and honoured to lead an amazing team that is dedicated to making ourorganization responsive and effective. Your OPLA Council is comprised of representatives from allregions of Ontario. I encourage you to connect with your own regional Councillor and feel free to shareyour ideas and opinions with them directly. In addition to representing their region, Councillors also workon a variety of projects and Committees.

Our Readers’ Advisory, and Children’s and Youth Services Committees are well established and theirmembers work diligently to bring you relevant events and resources.

I’m excited to report that at the first Council meeting of 2013 a new Community Led Libraries Committeewas struck. This group will build on the work of a CLA initiative, and support the movement for publiclibraries to be more responsive to their communities.

One of my goals as your President this year is to review the Terms of Reference for our Committees. This will help us efficiently carry out current and future projects, as well as providing clear guidelines forour hard working volunteers.

Our OPLA Conference Planners, Jessica Chapman (Vaughan PL) and Nicole Adams (Oshawa PL),have already started to work on Super Conference 2014, and the call for proposals were sent out onApril 11. I'm looking forward to reviewing all your great ideas! Presenting at a conference is a win/winsituation — you get to share your work and learn from your audience.

2. WHAT'S NEW

2.1 Feminist History Society Accessibility Project

Barb Clubb, the recently retired City Librarian and CEO of the Ottawa Public Library, is working as avolunteer with the Feminist History Society (FHS) of Canada to help make their resources available topublic library users.

The FHS would like to place copies of their books in all Canadian public libraries free of charge —starting with the English edition of their most recent book (2012): Feminism à la Québécoise.

Feminism à la Québécoise is a sparkling history by Micheline Dumont, the pre-eminent and veryengaging historian of second-wave feminism in Québec. Translator Nicole Kennedy brings herexperience as a feminist organizer to bear in this translation for English-speaking readers.

“The tone of the book gives the impression that the author is speaking directly to her readers, and thatthe personal narrative makes the story alive and vibrant,” said Marie-Andrée Bergeron of LavalUniversity. The original book is a wonderful gift to young francophone women and the members of theFeminist History Society believe that an English version provides an opportunity for all of us tounderstand the Québec experience better. Rewritten to make the book accessible to an audienceoutside of Québec this English version sparkles as the original did in French.

What is the Feminist History Society (FHS)?

The FHS is a Canadian non-profit registered charity (# 889933669 RR0001), founded by a group of 4lawyers and 1 sociologist whose careers have been devoted to improving the status of women inCanada. Between them, they hold 2 Orders of Canada, 1 Order of Ontario, 8 honorary doctorates, and3 professional medals. Their volunteer work with the FHS aims to publish a multi-volume series ofbooks to chronicle the history of the Canadian women’s movement, to reflect its diversity anddynamism, strength and spirit. In a volunteer capacity, I am working with Dr. Constance Backhouse, amember of FHS and Professor of Law and University Research Chair at the University of Ottawa.

What has the FHS accomplished?

Founded in 2010, the FHS has already published 3 books written by the women who participated in themovement themselves. The titles are:

Feminism à la Québécoise (2012) by Micheline Dumont, translated into English by NicoleKennedyWriting the Revolution (2011) by Michele LandsbergFeminist Journeys/Voies féministes (2010) edited by Marguerite Andersen

The FHS 2013 book of the year is in progress and focusses on sport. The title is Playing it Forward: 50years of Women and Sport in Canada.

The FHS is currently raising funds for this Accessibility Project and needs an indication of the number ofcopies of Feminism à la Québécoise required for our public libraries in Ontario. Therefore I need yourassistance.

If you would like free copy (ies) of Feminism à la Québécoise (in English) for your library please send anemail to: [email protected] with the words Feminism à la Québécoise in the subject line, andinclude the name of library, the address to which the book(s) should be sent, Library contact person, title, and e-mail address, phone number and number of copies required in the body of the email.

Additional information on the Feminist History Society is available at their website.

3. AROUND THE PROVINCE

3.1 Elgin County Library Launches Website with Responsive Design

As part of a project to redesign the County of Elgin's corporate website, the library jumped at the chanceto rework its web presence using responsive design and Drupal. This technology uses style sheets toautomatically detect whether a patron is visiting the web site from a desktop, tablet, or smartphone andadjusts the layout of the page to fit the user's screen without compromising font size or image quality. With responsive design, there is no need to maintain a separate mobile site or app for libraryinformation and there is only one set of pages to keep up to date.

"We are very happy with our new web site. Now we can look forward to the time our mobile catalogue,BookMyne, will also be redesigned in HTML 5 so that we will be able to link directly to an item's detailpage and improve the holds process for mobile users," said Sandi Loponen, Library Coordinator." Thisredesign also helps us achieve requirements for web accessibility under the AODA." The new websitemeets WCAG 2.0 AA standards including features for keyboard navigation, contrast change and textsize adjustment.

The website was created in partnership with Giant Goat Web Development, a Guelph-based firm. VisitElgin County Library's new website.

3.2 Birding Buddies Flock to Rainy River

Thanks to a grant from Ontario's Healthy Communities Fund (HCF), the Rainy River Public Library isnow loaning out six family bird-watching kits.

The Birding Buddies at the Library kits include binoculars, three kid-friendly field guides, and acustom-made checklist of local birds.

Located where the Prairies meet the Canadian Shield, Rainy River is one of Ontario's top birdingdestinations. There are more than 300 species found here, many of them western rarities — likemagpies and pelicans — seldom seen elsewhere in the province.

With the help of Justin Wagner, an enthusiastic programmer from the town Recreation Board, the kitswere field-tested on nature walks for kids of all ages.

3.8 Lights! Camera! Action!

At Newmarket Public Library recently cameras were rolling as Rogers TV was on site for two afternoonsshooting six mini-programs promoting various services the Library offers. The one-minute programswere scripted and produced by NPL in partnership with Rogers TV of York Region. The cable stationintroduced the concept of the mini-programs several years ago, when it began inviting local non-profitorganizations to submit script proposals for programs they would like to have produced free of charge.NPL’s scripts were designed to promote services that people in the community may not be aware of,including eBooks, databases, digital resources for children, and online genealogy resources. Librarystaff participated on camera and behind the scenes in the creation of the programs, which will air onRogers TV in the coming months as informational fillers in-between scheduled TV programming.

3.9 iPad Mini now on loan at Burlington Public Library

It may be small, but it’s mighty…popular. Building on the heavy demand for circulating eReaders,Burlington Public Library launched its newest electronic device collection, the iPad Mini, on February 25.

“As one of the first libraries in Canada to loan iPads to customers, we have taken another giant step insupporting 21st century literacy development in our community,” says Maureen Barry, Chief ExecutiveOfficer.

Anticipating high interest, the library purchased 30 devices, with 20 routed to the Express collection fora one-week loan, and 10 that customers could reserve for a regular three-week loan period (two-week ifthere are holds).

Customers borrow iPads preloaded with lots of great apps for all ages, from education to entertainment, and a wide variety of eBooks. Using their own Apple ID, they can download and use their favouriteapps, eBooks, and iTunes, and take videos and photos. When customers return the iPad mini, thememory is wiped and the device reloaded.

Two months into the launch, the iPad mini is as popular as expected, with nearly 300 holds and theExpress collection flying off the shelves. Success!
