OCULA President, Sharon Munro, cited Don’s many and varied achievements, which started auspi- ciously with his first position after graduation as Chief Librarian of Scugog Memorial Public Library in Port Perry. He has since worked at the OISE Library and is currently at Ryerson. Don has been involved in some unique ven- tures, including a four-month stretch in Central China in 1992, and as developer of a research skills program offered to the public through Ryerson’s Continuing Education program. At Ryerson, Don has actively contributed to several university-wide initiatives, most recently Ryerson’s Academic Integrity Project. He was a volunteer at the AIDS Committee of Toronto Library, and has contributed his energy to the OLA Super Conference for several years. But beyond these achievements, perhaps Don’s greatest contribution is his commitment to the peo- ple in the profession—his willingness and enthusi- asm to mentor, teach, support, and bring joy to his colleagues, students, and peers. OCULA Council has just estab-lished a second OCULA Awardaimed at graduating studentsfrom a Master's program inlibrary/information studies inOntario with an interest in aca-demic libraries and new profes-sionals in the academic libraryfield who have been working inOntario for no more than twoyears. Applicants are asked tosubmit a proposal for anOCULA conference session forthe Ontario LibraryAssociation's SuperConference. continued from page 1 IntroductionThe Cooperative OnlineRepository for InformationLiteracy (CORIL) emerged outof my six month academicleave in 2002-2003. Interviewswith a number of instructionlibrarians across the provinceled me to believe that therewas a need to investigate coop-erative and collaborative initia-tives for sharing informationliteracy teaching and learningresources within the OntarioCouncil of University Libraries(OCUL). A successful proposalto the directors for a feasibilitystudy in the spring of 2003cleared the way. I was asked toselect and chair a committee toconduct a feasibility study anda needs assessment, and tomake recommendations for acooperative project. At thattime, the committee consistedof Cory Laverty, Queen’sUniversity, Marian Press,OISE/University of Toronto,Ann Romeril (nowHemingway), University ofOttawa, Lisa Sloniowski,University of Windsor (nowYork University) and myself aschair. The completed feasibilitystudy with recommendations todevelop an OCUL repositoryfor archiving information liter-acy teaching and learningresources was submitted to theOCUL directors in the fall of2003 and given their enthusias-tic endorsement almost imme-diately. The committee wasasked to develop, design andmanage the repository.

Description/LocationAfter many brainstorming ses-sions and creating multipleflowcharts filled with incom-prehensive scribbles, after sev-eral meetings and with thesound advice of Marshall Peter

Clinton, Director, University ofToronto Libraries, InformationTechnology Services, we creat-ed a plan. DSpace, which origi-nated with MIT and HewlettPackard in 2002, was the soft-ware of choice because of itsflexibility and because it wasalready in use at the Universityof Toronto. CORIL resides onthe Scholars Portal server athttp://ospace.scholarsportal.infoand since it went live in thespring of 2004, CORIL has hada total of 7,121 visitors with anaverage of 17 visitors per dayoriginating from 3,733 uniqueIP addresses.

A submission process, guide-lines for authors, Web accessi-bility guidelines and a brochurehave been created and two callsfor submissions have been sentout. Some submissions havebeen received and usage reportsindicate that these are well usedby visitors to CORIL.

From the beginning though, itwas clear that the committeesaw this as a shared repositorywhere all materials would bearchived. The open accessenvironment would allow any-one anywhere to freely down-load, modify and use theresources for local teachingneeds with the possibility ofreturning the modified versionto the archive. To submit to therepository, however, a privi-leged account is required.Academic instruction librariansfrom across Canada areencouraged to visit the web siteand set up such an account andparticipate in the developmentof CORIL.

and as with any growing project,some modifications to the origi-nal plan are under way. Thecommittee believes that instruc-tion librarians would benefitfrom the development of newcategories for submission. Forexample, work is underway tocreate a General category of sub-missions, which would includeDatabase Guides such as forPsycINFO, MLA InternationalBibliography and Beilstein, helpguides for using RefWorks andIllumina, as well as SubjectGuides for a wide variety of dis-ciplines. In addition, the Generalcategory may also includePowerPoint presentations, tipson evaluating resources, andassessment tools. A section oninformation literacy standardsand another on links to otherrepositories will be added in thenear future. Submissions forpeer review will continue to beaccepted; however, the commit-tee is now updating the guide-lines, which may include oppor-tunities for user review thus cre-ating the potential to increase thecommitment of CORIL visitors.In a recent development, CORILreceived an expanded mandatefrom the OCUL directors for aCanada-wide repository forinformation literacy teaching andlearning resources with built-insustainability funding as part ofthe overall Scholars Portal initiative.

ListservA listserv has been set up toincrease communication amongCanadian instruction librarians. Itis a vehicle to share ideas aboutinnovative teaching techniques; itis also an easy way to reach outto colleagues who may want tocollaborate in the design anddevelopment of tutorials, websites, and assignments. For moreinformation on joining the list-

ConclusionBecause of my retirement at theend of March 2005, I am veryhappy to report that two newmembers have recently beenadded to the committee to broad-en the membership. These areCandice Dahl, Brock Universityand Tom Adam, University ofWestern Ontario. As well, origi-nal members Cory Laverty,Queen’s University and LisaSloniowski, York Universityhave been appointed as co-chairseffective March 29, 2005. Thecommittee is excited about thecontinued prospects for increas-ing content and for developing astrong cooperative effort to makeCORIL a first stop for informa-tion literacy teaching resourcesin Canada. And, of course, thefuture of CORIL depends on thespirit of sharing which ultimatelywill save time for those librariansinvolved in information literacyinstruction. Participating in sucha repository and saving timewere two key responses men-tioned in the needs assessmentconducted in 2003.

Fanshawe CollegeFanshawe College has signed anagreement with Statistics Canadato bring the Data LiberationInitiative (DLI) to the college.Fanshawe is the first communitycollege in Ontario to enter theDLI community. The purchase ofthis service was initiated byFanshawe's Library and MediaServices department in conjunc-tion with a number of Collegedivisions.

Fanshawe College went live onMarch 4th with the web-basedSIRSI Library Catalogue. Thenew system entitled “fanCAT”replaces the previous telnetbased DRAcat system. The stu-dents are delighted with fanCATand find the familiarity using aweb based system “awesome”.fanCAT can be searched at:http://fanCAT.fanshawec.ca

Ryerson UniversityRyerson University Library host-ed one of a series of training ses-sions for OCUL librarians onFebruary 1, 2005, in preparationfor incorporating CSA Illuminaas the new Scholars Portalsearch interface. The trainingsession was led by a specialistfrom Cambridge ScientificAbstracts (Illumina's distributor),and was held in the CommonsLearning Lab in the Ronald D.Besse Information and LearningCommons.

The Library also recently hostedvisitors from the University ofTechnology (UTech) in Jamaica,who were on a university-widetour of the campus in anticipa-tion of possible future partner-ships with Ryerson. University of TorontoIntensive planning is takingplace for the new AcademicLearning Centre/Library to bebuilt at the University of Torontoat Mississauga. Constructionwill begin in the Spring, 2005.

A new cool storage facility hasbeen built in the basement of arecently completed residence onthe St. George Campus. Plansare underway to move valuablemedia resources to this special-ized facility.

Intensive planning continues forthe new off-site shelving andpreservation facility, UTL atDownsview. The building willbe constructed with a modulardesign, with each module havingthe capacity to hold 1,000,000volumes. Two such modules,plus a loading dock and adminis-trative and processing facility,will be built in 2005. The long-term plan is to add 1,000,000volume-capacity in each of threephases scheduled for 2009, 2013and 2017.

University of WaterlooIn late 2004, the School ofArchitecture moved to the heartof old Galt in Cambridge. TheMusagetes Architecture Libraryis on the second floor of theSchool of Architecture building,the renovated Riverside SilkMill. Overlooking the GrandRiver, the Library's 13,000square feet of space is enhancedby natural lighting and views ofheritage buildings. MicheleLaing, previously LiaisonLibrarian for Architecture andFine Arts, accepted the positionof Branch Head of theMusagetes Architecture Library.

RACER 2.7: WHAT THE FUTURE ENTAILSAmy Greenberg, University of TorontoDonna Millard, McMaster UniversityAmy and Donna discussed the newest ver-sion of the VDX software, Racer 2.7. Theprimary focus was on Zportal, which is theend user interface of the software. Usabilitytesting conducted at Mills Library atMcMaster University highlighted thatpatrons were pleased with many of thechanges brought about by this upgrade;however, there are still some areas thatrequire further improvement.Submitted: Mindy Myers, FIS student

Peering into dark corners: Examining theroots of our intellectual freedomRichard Sims, Centennial College Richard Sims’ paper was sparked by the ter-rorist attack on the World Trade Centre,which, he believes, had a significant impacton our understanding of freedom. From thecontext of librarianship in North America,many authors in the library literature writ-ing on the theme of intellectual freedomturn to “authorities” in the philosophical tra-dition to support their arguments. JohnStuart Mill is most often invoked. Sims’presentation was comprised of a seriouslook at Mill’s famous essay, On Liberty. Hesuggested that an underlying theme of thisessay is a subtle support of tyranny.Consequently, he indicated that Mill’s phi-losophy of the greatest good for the greatestnumber holds grave consequences for for-eign and domestic policy, including librarypolicy, in modern liberal democracies thatcannot be ignored. Discussions of Mill’sthesis, library statements on intellectualfreedom, and how best to represent diversi-ty with limited resources, followed the pres-entation. Experiential Learning Theory? They didn’tteach us THAT in library schoolJane Burpee and Peter Wolf, University ofGuelphLibrarians as educators? Traditionally wehaven’t thought of ourselves that way, andmost libraries have not devoted much ener-gy or time to helping librarians become bet-ter at teaching. We now know that the most

effective information literacy instructors arethe librarians who understand learning theo-ries and teaching techniques.

Understanding experiential learning theoryis just one way that librarians can improvethe information literacy experience for theirlibrary users. At the University of Guelph,Jane Burpee, Manager of Library Referenceand Information Literary and Peter Wolf,Manager of Instructional Development,Teaching Support Services have partneredwith the academic liaison librarians toimprove the librarians’ understanding oflearning and teaching. In this session, Janeand Peter introduced the concepts of experi-ential learning and demonstrated how thoseconcepts could be applied when planning aninformation literacy session. Session partic-ipants agreed that this session helped themlook at the “dreaded” one hour libraryinstruction session in a whole new light—and that librarians need to understand bothlearning and teaching. Adding pizzazz to your website usingvideo capturing softwareJames Watson, Trent UniversityJennifer Thiessen, Brock UniversityJames and Jennifer discussed their experi-ence with the development of animatedonline tutorials. They began by introducingthe concept of creating full-motion video ofPC screen activity in order to enhance web-based tutorials designed for students. Theythen went on to explore the benefits andchallenges associated with developing theseinteractive tutorials, and to evaluate the var-ious video capturing software packagesavailable on the market. This was followedby a discussion on planning the develop-ment of these tools, drawn from the presen-ters’ own experience. James and Jennifercomplimented their session by demonstrat-ing the tutorials they have created for theirstudents. Creating leaders: A study of the NorthernExposure to Leadership (NELI) participants– before and after. Daniel Phelan, Ryerson University. Daniel’s talk was based on his ongoing

research for his Master’s degree inContinuing Education. He set the stage byidentifying why the library profession needsmore new leaders - the aging population,the changing nature of libraries, and thechallenges of new technology. Leadership isnow a major topic in librarianship, but as agroup we are still reluctant to use the termand will substitute ‘management’ or ‘admin-istration’. After highlighting various leader-ship theories and qualities of leaders, Danieldiscussed the role of leadership institutesand focused on NELI – outlining its partici-pant selection, program and goals. In hissurvey of NELI graduates, he found that theactivities of the Institute did not create lead-ers per se, but the personal experiences,positive mentoring and networking opportu-nities realized by respondents meant theywould be more likely to have the confi-dence and background to accept a leader-ship position. Successful online courses: Pedagogy nottechnologyCarolyn K. Murray, University of Toronto (retired)Using a variety of evaluation methods CarolynMurray studied the pedagogical processes oftwo online courses; one an online second yearEnglish poetry course (ENG 201Y from 2002-2003), and the other, a graduate Virtual Librarycourse offered in the Fall of 2003 through theOntario Institute for Studies in Education(OISE). A comprehensive handout coveringeverything from definitions, methods and data,student and instructor comments, workloadissues, conclusions as well as suggestions forsetting up an online information literacycourse, was provided to each attendee.Student comments provided a very interestingglimpse into their experiences with synchro-nous chat, asynchronous threaded discussions,and their overall impressions about elearning.Students commented on both the favourableaspects of an online course, the unfavourable,and the unique. The characteristics of onlineversus classroom teaching were examined, aswere the characteristics of successful onlinelearners. Carolyn’s conclusions and sugges-tions for setting up an online information liter-acy course provided the basis for an exchangeof ideas and observations with the audience.One of the most informative sessions I’ve everattended! This session highlighted theareas where improvement in training is need-ed, but also provided new ideas on how thiscould be accomplished. The research andexperiences of Joanne, Angela, and Eun-haprovided insight into how new librarians arebeing trained. Their survey results show thatnew librarians are being trained for a shortperiod of time, are bombarded with too muchinformation over this time, and are often leftto fend for themselves. What they learned isthat new librarians want structured trainingover the long term, hands-on exercises, a for-mal mentor, and a training manual. As manyprofessional librarians reach retirement, it isimperative to impart their knowledge ontothose new librarians who will carry on whenthey leave. Why librarians should care about DigitalRights ManagementDr. Ian Kerr, University of OttawaDr. Kerr gave an overview of the strategicvision underlying Digital Rights Management(DRM) and the motives associated with theircreation. He discussed two perspectives con-cerning intellectual property: ownership isownership, and IP law cannot be changed tocontain digitized expression. He outlined thelegal approaches recently adopted to protectDRM against those who would try to getaround them, as well as the features of DRMsuch as its surveillance function and theDRMs unbundled copyright feature. Dr. Kerrwarned librarians that technical protectionmeasures (TPMs) used to create DRMswould affect privacy through the DRMs abili-ty to collect information about users, theirhabits, and their use of digital material. Art of the Reference InterviewCatherine Ross and Kirsti Nielson (retired),University of Western OntarioBoth speakers have a long-standing interestin the reference interview, and have pub-lished and presented widely on this topic,including a book co-authored with PatriciaDewdney entitled Conducting the ReferenceInterview (Neal-Schuman, 2002).

In this thought-provoking, informative, andentertaining session, the speakers illustratedthe centrality of a successful reference inter-view in the provision of quality informationservice. Collaboration and communicationwith the user is essential irrespective of thereference question. This is because a dividetypically exists between the user’s knowl-edge of the library system and resources, onthe one hand, and that of the librarian, onthe other. As such, it is unwise and oftenwasteful of time to take a user’s question atface value and to neglect to engage in ameaningful reference interview.

The speakers’ research is based on theanalysis of some 261 visits of UWO LISstudents to public and university libraries.

Information practices of ethno-racial communitiesNadia Caidi, University of TorontoNadia Caidi, Assistant Professor with theFaculty of Information Studies at theUniversity of Toronto, shared initial find-ings from several smaller studies she hasconducted with graduate students that lookinto “Information Practices of Ethno-RacialCommunities” (IPERC). Professor Caidiprovided many examples of ways thatIPERC research findings might inform prac-tical responses to library users from diversebackgrounds, and the session was well-attended by outreach librarians from bothacademic and public libraries. The Ontario Council ofUniversity Libraries (OCUL), a consortiumof university libraries in Ontario does notonly license electronic content for its mem-bers, but it also licenses software that maybe used for shared services such as interli-brary loan, citation linking and federatedsearching. The politics of “care” in librarianship: thefuture of women’s work in a wired world.Roma Harris, University of Western OntarioMuch of the work of ‘care’, that is, thedirect support of others, especially thosewith limited means, if not performed bywomen, is considered to be women’s work.In librarianship, the work of ‘care’ is usual-ly manifested through staff member’s directcontact with library users in the context ofservices such as reference. Much of whatwe know about information and help-seek-ing suggests that users not only expectquick and reliable responses from serviceproviders, but they prefer service to befacilitated through a warm and trusting rela-tionship with a known provider. Ignacio Chapella, who found geneticallymodified maize varieties in remoteMexican valleys. We heard excerpts fromthe first lesbian novel, The Well ofLoneliness by Radclyffe Hall, and from an“unauthorized parody” of Gone with theWind by Alice Randall. Sky Gilbert read ascene from Ban this Show, his play aboutphotographer Robert Mapplethorpe.

Guelph’s 2005 Freedom to Read team wasJane Burpee, Lynn Campbell, MaryGrebenc, Pascal Lupien, Jenny Marvin,Ron MacKinnon, and Lorna Rourke. Theevent provided a refreshing opportunity toreflect on the complex balance of valuesthat form the foundation of librarianship.n n n

library as the centre of learning andresearch on campus; (2) How to effectivelymarket library resources and services; (3)How to provide much-needed referenceservices to students who might not other-wise use the library, in areas that they fre-quent most often. The presenters stressedthe importance of marketing the serviceand choice of location as being significantin connecting with students who are nothabitual library users. McMaster UniversityGraham Hill, UniversityLibrarian, will retire in June 2005after 34 years of service atMcMaster. Since joiningMcMaster, Graham has held vari-ous positions, including Associate

Librarian for the Collectionsdepartment. He was appointedUniversity Librarian in 1979.

Charlotte Stewart, AssociateUniversity Librarian (CollectionResources) will serve as InterimUniversity Librarian for the sixmonths following Graham'sretirement. Charlotte will herselfretire from the University at theend of this appointment. She hasbeen with McMaster for morethan 30 years.

Mary Anne Trainor, Head ofCollections & Technical Services,Health Sciences Library, will beretiring on July 1, 2005 after 27years of service.

Ryerson UniversityDana Thomas (B.A., M.I.St.) isworking on a one-year contractreplacing Lei Jin (who is onmaternity leave), as SerialsLibrarian. Dana came with excel-lent experience and referencesfrom the Robarts Library of theUniversity of Toronto, where sheworked part-time while complet-ing her degree at the U of T’sFaculty of Information Studies.

Peter Genzinger (B.E.S., M.A.,M.L.I.S.) is currently working ona contract basis, with responsibili-ty for both maps cataloguing andreference assistance. Peterworked for several years in theUniversity of Waterloo's Map andDesign Library, and also hasextensive government and privatesector experience in informationand knowledge services.

Roma Kail (B.A., M.A.,M.L.I.S.) is working on a one-year contract replacing KellyKimberley (who is on maternityleave), as Coordinator of Part-time staff. Roma has previousacademic library experience at theUniversity of Saskatchewan andYork University, and worked as aCommunity Information Librarianat the AIDS Committee ofToronto prior to coming toRyerson.

Diane Granfield, Coordinator ofVirtual Reference, is currently ona 6-month sabbatical, working onresearch in the area of virtual ref-erence.

University of GuelphGohar Ashoughian, RobinBergart and Jane Burpee wererecently honoured with theUniversity of Guelph’sDistinguished Professor andLibrarian Awards. These biennialawards recognize faculty andlibrarians who have consistentlydemonstrated a commitment toteaching, research and service. As the Manager of Reference andInformation Literacy, Jane Burpeehas been a tireless promoter ofthe core concept of informationliteracy. Jane was instrumental inorganizing the Library’s annualFreedom to Read event, and is co-chairing the WILU 2005 confer-ence at Guelph.

Robin Bergart, an AcademicLiaison Librarian to three depart-ments, was recognized for hersuccessful outreach efforts, suchas making the Library a deposito-ry for the World TourismOrganization, and co-teachingclasses with HTM faculty andLearning and Writing Servicescolleagues.

Gohar Ashoughian is the Managerof the University of Guelph-Humber Learning Commons.Gohar regularly overcomes cul-tural, technical, and financialchallenges in order to effectivelyintegrate the resources and servic-es of a university library and acollege library.

Sheril Hook assumed the posi-tion of Coordinator of LibraryInstruction, University of Torontoat Mississauga, as of December 6,2004. Sheril comes from theUniversity of Arizona where sheworked as an English andAmerican Literature/Theatre ArtsLibrarian. Sheril is activelyengaged in research, currentlyworking on a monographic titlecalled Centres of Learning:Writing Centres and Libraries inCollaboration. She is also partici-pating in a grant-funded researchproject called “Einstein’sProteges: A Heuristic Approachto Bridging the Gap BetweenFaculty Expectations and StudentPreparedness” awarded by theU.S. Department of Education’sFund for the Improvement ofPostsecondary Education.

University of Western OntarioJoyce C. Garnett, UniversityLibrarian, was recently elected tothe Board of Directors of theAssociation of Research Libraries(ARL). ARL is a not-for-profitorganization comprising the lead-ing research libraries in NorthAmerica. Western is one of 14Canadian institutions with amembership in this distinguished123-member organization, andJoyce Garnett is the onlyCanadian member on the Board atthis time.

University Archivist RobinKeirstead was appointed Chair ofthe Council of OntarioUniversities (COU) Task Forceon Privacy Issues. The TaskForce has a mandate to monitorprivacy developments and assistthe COU in responding to specificissues. The Task Force prepareda report outlining the key areas ofconcern to universities withrespect to the existing legislation.The report was recently submittedto the provincial government bythe COU.

Western’s Senate Committee onUniversity Planning (SCUP) hasre-elected Claire Callaghan,Director of The D.B. WeldonLibrary, to membership on theSCUP Subcommittee on CapitalAllocations (SUCA), for a two-year term until 30 June 2006.

John Costella has been appointedto the position of Research andInstructional Librarian for BasicMedical Science, Dentistry, andyears three and four Biology, on a

permanent basis. John was sec-onded into this position inNovember 2002, and he was thesuccessful applicant in the recentcompetition.

Tom Belton is the new RecordsArchivist in Western Archives.For the past three years, he wasemployed as the Archives Advisorfor the Archives Association ofOntario. For the past year and ahalf Tom has also taught the“Introduction to ArchivesAdministration” course atWestern’s Faculty of Informationand Media Studies. He has a BAfrom Western and a MA from theUniversity of Waterloo.

Andrew Clendinneng has beenselected as Western LibrariesDevelopment Officer. Andrew isthe first full-time DevelopmentOfficer for the Libraries. Heworked previously in Western’sDepartment of Alumni Relationsand Development as the Alumniand Development Officer for TripCoordination. Andrew holds aMaster of Communication fromSuffolk College, Boston, and aBA in Environmental Studies andPolitical Science from TrentUniversity.

University of WindsorTamsin Bolton has joined theLeddy Library as InformationLiteracy Librarian. Tamsin, whoholds an M.L.I.S. from McGillUniversity, has previously heldpositions at the University ofWinnipeg, as InformationLiteracy Intern and AcadiaUniversity, as Business Librarian.

Jonathan Makepeace,Bibliographic Services Librarian,has been working with theLibrary of Congress (LC)Program for CooperativeCataloging (PCC) to set up aCanadian NACO funnel project.NACO is the PCC programme forname authorities, allowinglibraries to create name headingsand cross-references in LC’s data-base for use throughout theAACR world. Wilfrid Laurier UniversityGreg Sennema assumed the posi-tion of Electronic ServicesLibrarian as of January 4, 2005,with duties ranging from webdevelopment to integrated librarysupport for e-learning enterprisesat Laurier. Greg, who is original-ly from the Hamilton area, hasspent the last five years workingat Calvin College in GrandRapids, Michigan, where he wasDigital Resources andReference/Instructional Librarian.At Calvin College, Greg wasnominated by his colleagues forinclusion in Library Journal2004's list of 'Movers andShakers'. Greg's academic back-ground is in History and English,and he has worked as a librarianat the Globe and Mail, as anassistant lecturer in computer sci-ence at Tumaini University inTanzania, and as a communitydeveloper with the ChristianReformed World Relief Committeefor two years, also in Tanzania.

York UniversityCarol Ohlers retired from YorkUniversity Libraries in January2005 after a 32-year career as amusic cataloguer. Carol's cata-loguing was highly regarded atYork and also by the musiclibrary community. In retirementCarol plans to continue to workon her projects: the Directory ofMusic Collections in Canada andthe Index to Renaissance VocalMusic in Collections.

Peter Duerr has joined York'sScott Library ReferenceDepartment in the position ofReference and GovernmentInformation Librarian. Peterholds a Master of InformationStudies from the University ofWestern Ontario and a Bachelorof Arts degree in English fromYork University. Peter's previousposition was at the Library of theOffice of the Auditor General ofCanada in Ottawa. The Davis Library has a new Information Commonsand service desks. Anne Fullerton served as chair ofthe Information Commons Planning Team. Afterhaving been closed for renovations for the summer,the Davis Library opened in the first week of classeswith a new look and a technological space that pro-motes the scholarly use of information resources.The state of the art facility features multimediaworkstations and a spatial design that facilitatesgroup projects. Floor to ceiling glass windows anddoors lead to a main floor separated into silent andnoisy study zones. With retrofitted study tables andcarrels, students can plugin for power and Internetalmost anywhere. This is the first phase of the DavisLibrary renovation. University of Western OntarioWireless Printing at Western LibrariesWestern’s University community is now able to printfrom anywhere to public printers in any of WesternLibraries’ locations using wired and wireless net-works. Last fall Western Libraries, InformationTechnology Services (ITS), and two vendors of printservices (ITC Systems and Printeron) partnered forthis project. Bob Caron, Library SystemsAdministrator – Network Services for WesternLibraries first identified the possibility of linking theLibraries’ existing public print services with onedeveloped by Printeron for the hotel market back inthe fall of 2002.

In recognition of Bob Caron’s vision and role inlinking technical staff from three very differentorganizations, he was invited to speak at the ResNet2004 Symposium at Princeton University in June

2004. Since that time, several North American uni-versities and colleagues have tapped into theWestern experience to develop plans for their ownwireless print service.

New Web SiteIn the fall of 2004, Western Libraries launched aredesigned Web site. This was the culmination ofwork that began immediately after receiving feed-back from a Web survey in 2003. The redesign wasa collaborative project with the University’sInformation Technology Services and involved par-ticipation from most library staff.

One of the highlights of the newly designed Website is its accessibility for users with visual and mus-cular impairments. In addition to collaborating withUniversity Information Technology Services staff,the Libraries also consulted with the AssistiveTechnologist for Students with Disabilities in theStudent Development Centre.

Western Reads ProgramIn 2003-2004, as part of the 125th celebrations forThe University of Western Ontario, the WesternReads program proved to be so popular that is wasback again in late 2004/early 2005, with an addedfeature of book club discussions. Claire Callaghan,Director of The D.B. Weldon Library, was one ofthe celebrities chosen from the University andLondon communities to participate this year. Clairewas paired with Brian Meehan, Executive Directorand Chief Curator of Museum London, to discussBarbara Gowdy’s The Romantic.
