SECTION 2: CIRCUIT REQUIREMENTS

220V Operation

The Model G4185 has a 2 H.P., 3450 R.P.M.motor which requires a 220V single-phase circuit. The cord set enclosed does not have a plug asthe style of plug you require will depend upon thetype of service you currently have or plan toinstall. The motor will safely draw about 12 ampsat 220V under load. If you operate the ModelG4185 on any circuit that is already close to itscapacity, it might blow a fuse or trip a circuitbreaker. However, if an unusual load does notexist, and power failure still occurs, have the cir-cuit inspected by a qualified electrician.

Circuit Load

When operating at 220V, we recommend using aNEMA-style 6L-15 plug and outlet. See Figure 1.You may also “hard-wire” the machine directly toyour panel, provided you place a disconnectswitch near the machine. Check the electricalcodes in your area for specifics on wiring require-ments.

Under normal use, the motor draws approximate-ly 12 amps at 220V. We recommend a 15 amp cir-cuit breaker for 220V operation This should besatisfactory for normal use while providingenough protection against circuit damage causedby power surges.

Figure 1. Typical 220V 3-prong plug and outlet

-6- Model G4185 Horizontal Boring Machine

We do not recommend the use of extension cordson 220V equipment. It is much better to arrangethe placement of your equipment and the installedwiring to eliminate the need for extension cords.Should it be necessary to use an extension makesure the cord is rated Hard Service (grade S) orbetter. Refer to the chart in Section 1: SafetyInstructions to determine the minimum gauge forthe extension cord. The extension cord must alsocontain a ground wire and plug pin. Always repairor replace extension cords when they becomeworn or damaged.

Extension Cords

Your Model G4185 comes pre-wired for 220 voltoperation. A wiring diagram is provided at theback of this manual should it be necessary torepair or revise the wiring. Always utilize a quali-fied electrician when doing any electrical work onthis equipment.

Wiring Diagram

We have covered some basic electricalrequirements for the safe operation of yourmachine. These requirements are not nec-essarily comprehensive. You must be surethat your particular electrical configurationcomplies with local and state codes.Ensure compliance by checking with yourlocal municipality or a licensed electrician.

Grounding

In the event of an electrical short, grounding pro-vides electric current a path of least resistance toreduce the risk of electric shock. This tool isequipped with an electric cord having an equip-ment-grounding conductor which must be proper-ly connected to a grounding plug. The plug mustbe plugged into a matching outlet that is properlyinstalled and grounded in accordance with alllocal codes and ordinances.

Improper connections of the electrical-groundingconductor can result in risk of electric shock. Theconductor with green or green and yellow stripedinsulation is the electrical-grounding conductor. Ifrepair or replacement of the electric cord or plugis necessary, do not connect the equipmentgrounding conductor to a live terminal.

This equipment must begrounded. Verify that anyexisting electrical outletand circuit you intend toplug into is actuallygrounded. Under no cir-cumstances should thegrounding pin from anythree-pronged plug beremoved. Serious injurymay occur.

Avoid chlorine-basedsolvents as they may damage painted surfacesshould they come in contact. Always follow theusage instructions on the product you choose forclean up.

Site Considerations

FLOOR LOADYour Model G4185 represents a moderate weightload in a small footprint. Most commercial orhome shop floors should be sufficient to carry theweight of the Model G4185. If you question thestrength of your floor, you can opt to have it rein-forced by a qualified contractor.

WORKING CLEARANCESWorking clearances can be thought of as the dis-tances between machines and obstacles thatallow safe operation of every machine without lim-itation. Consider existing and anticipated machineneeds, size of material to be processed througheach machine, and space for auxiliary standsand/or work tables. Also consider the relativeposition of each machine to one another for effi-cient material handling. Be sure to allow yourselfsufficient room to safely run your machines in anyforeseeable operation.

LIGHTING AND OUTLETSLighting should be bright enough to eliminateshadows and prevent eye strain. Electrical circuitsshould be dedicated or large enough to handlecombined motor amp loads. Outlets should belocated near each machine so power or extensioncords are not obstructing high-traffic areas. Besure to observe local electrical codes for properinstallation of new lighting, outlets, or circuits.

Many of the solvents commonly used toclean machinery can be toxic when inhaledor ingested. Always work in well-ventilatedareas far from potential ignition sourceswhen dealing with solvents. Use care whendisposing of waste rags and towels to besure they do not create fire or environmen-tal hazards. Keep children and animalssafely away when cleaning and assemblingthis machine.

Do not smoke while usingsolvents. A risk of explo-sion or fire exists and mayresult in serious personalinjury.

Make your shop “childsafe.” Ensure that yourworkplace is inaccessibleto youngsters by closingand locking all entranceswhen you are away. Neverallow visitors in your shopwhen assembling, adjust-ing or operating equip-ment.

Do not use gasoline orother petroleum-basedsolvents. They have lowflash points which makethem extremely flamma-ble. A risk of explosionand burning exists ifthese products areused. Serious personalinjury may occur if thiswarning is ignored.

SECTION 6: OPERATIONS

Here are a few simple things you can do toincrease the predictability of your horizontal bor-ing machine’s performance:

1. Use the right bit for the job. Bits are thescrew-in type and are specifically made forhorizontal boring machines.

2. Never rush a drilling proceedure. Extra careduring set up will ensure satisfactoryresults.

3. Maintain your horizontal boring machine intop condition. See Section 7 of this manualfor maintenance procedures.

4. Always use a test piece of wood to checkyour set up. Only when desired results areachieved should you use your expensivelumber.

A horizontal boring machine bit requires propercare.

1. Store the bits so their sharp points and flutesare protected. A wooden or plastic box thatkeeps bits from touching one another worksbest.

2. Keep bits clean and rust free.

3. Have bits sharpened as soon as they showany signs of dulling.

SECTION 7: MAINTENANCE

Lubrication

Since all bearings are shielded and permanentlylubricated, simply leave them alone until theyneed to be replaced. Do not lubricate them.

Regular periodic maintenance on your ModelG4185 will ensure its optimum performance.Make a habit of inspecting your machine eachtime you use it. Check for the following conditionsand repair or replace when necessary:

1. Loose mounting bolts.

2. Worn switch.

3. Worn or damaged cords and plugs.

4. Damaged motor spindle.

5. Any other condition that could hamper thesafe operation of this machine.

Tables

The nonpainted surfaces on the Model G4185should be protected against rust and pitting.Wiping the machine clean after every use ensuresthat wood dust will not trap moisture against baremetal surfaces.

Some woodworkers recommend using automo-tive paste wax on exposed steel and cast iron sur-faces. The wax provides a layer of protection, aswell as reducing friction between lumber and thetable, making cuts faster and smoother. Avoidwaxes that contain silicone or other syntheticingredients. These materials can find their wayinto lumber that is being worked, and can makestaining and finishing difficult. If you use pastewax, make sure that it is 100% Carnauba wax.

Disconnect power to themachine when perform-ing any maintenance, assembly or adjust-ments. Failure to do thismay result in seriouspersonal injury.

Wear safety glassesduring the entire mainte-nance process. Failureto comply may result inserious personal injury.

Keep loose clothingrolled up and out of theway of machinery andkeep hair pulled back.
