OVENIA Hostelling International SloveniaHostelling International Slovenia (HI Slovenia) is the only national representative of Slovenia in the International Youth Hostel Federation (Hostelling International – HI). HI is a non-governmental and non-profit organization active in about 90 countries in the world. The organization works closely together with UNESCO (United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization), WTO (World Tourism Organization) and other important international organization – also it was proclaimed the sixth largest organization that offers overnighting. With 4 million members it is one of the largest youth organizations in the world and is the only network of youth hostels with about 4.000 objects for spending the night, 1.5 million beds and 30-40 overnight stays annually.

HI has high standards for youth hostels, based on the treatment of the guests, security, cleanliness and privacy. But it is not its only role. Since it was established in 1932 it encourages young people for better intercultural understanding through informal education and peace, global friendship and environmentalism. The international organization, with a strong support of its national members, it offers interaction among youth of various nationalities and cultures, exchange of experience, getting to know their peers and after all themselves.

For this the organization has international programs for youth, above all the ones with lesser chances, through which we spread the mission of Hostelling International, which remained the same since 1932:

To promote the education of all young people of all nations, but especially young people of limited means, by encouraging in them a greater knowledge, love and care of the countryside and an appreciation of the cultural values of towns and cities in all parts of the world, and as ancillary thereto, to provide hostels or other accommodation in which there shall be no distinctions of race, nationality, colour, religion, sex, class or political opinions and thereby to develop a better understanding of their fellow men, both at home and abroad.

PZS, with more than 40 hostels around Slovenia, ensures safe, budget friendly and quality boarding for all types of groups. This includes the educational field trips with various themes (history, art or language courses) as well as extracurricular activities for schools, students, sporting and other groups – or simply friends who want a joint active holiday.

Hostel Proteus is located in the centre of Postojna. Hostel is 500 m from the main bus station, 1500 m from the railway station, 800 m from the Postojna cave, 12 km far from Predjama Castle and only 50 m from the local bus station. There are local inns and pubs close to the hostel, and 300 m from the hostel there is a large shopping centre with various stores. Near the hostel park there is a town sports park with a stadium and playgrounds for tennis, basketball, handball, football, an athletic track and children`s playground.

Hostel Proteus has 120 beds. Rooms are three and four bedded with common sanitary facilities to share. In July and August there are additional 100 beds. Guests can also be offered breakfast if they wish. From Monday to Friday it is always possible to order full board (by prior arrangement also at weekends). Hostel is open all year, 24 hours a day. In the hall of hostel there is free internet access and guests can also use a small kitchen for making hot drinks and meals.


The community of Postojna is located in the south-western part of Slovenia at the intersection of the coastal and inland area, on the north side of Pivka basin and belongs to the Inner-Karst statistical region.

The entire community is located in the Karst, which has a very rich natural and cultural heritage; economy is primarily geared towards tourism. More than 60% of the county is covered by forest; a strong branch is agriculture and animal husbandry. Postojna has an administrative unit, two primary schools with branch schools, two secondary schools with high school, economics, mechanical goods, metalworking, forestry, woodworking and health programs, adult education, college, medical centre, Hospital for Gynaecology and Obstetrics.

In Postojna there is also the Karst Research Institute ZRC SAZU, Notranjska Museum and Regional Unit of Slovenian Forest Service, which manages most of the forests in Javorniki, Hrušica, Nanos and Snežnik.

Local sights and attractions

Postojna CaveIn the high season (May to September) a visit can take place every hour, out of season three to four times a day. The visit takes about an hour and a half. The total length of the tourist part of the cave is 5 km: the electric train takes you 3,2 km, then you go 1,8 km on foot. Since the temperature in the cave is between 8 and 10 ° C, we recommend appropriate footwear and clothing. Each visit is conducted in Slovenian, English, German and Italian language.


Predjama Castle Not far from the cave there is a village of Predjama in the idyllic area, high in the stone wall there is the Predjama Castle like the observer of the environment over there. It is interesting and romantic throughout the year: in spring and summer its surroundings flourishing, in autumn it is dressed with colours of near forests, especially magical is in winter, when snow whitens the surroundings. The castle was first mentioned in the year 1202.

Škocjanske jame Škocjanske jame - caves are a unique natural phenomenon, and the only Slovenian monument registered on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Some 200 meters from where the Reka River sinks in the distant past, the cave collapsed ceiling and created the sinkhole Large and Small valley, separated by a natural bridge, a remnant of the original cave ceiling. Above the caves between the wall and above the sink and walls of Mala dolina there is a small village Škocjan.

The Park of military history The Park of military history currently presents an exhibition Regio Carsica Militaris, which is about long lasting and military fortification heritage of Pivka basin or strategically important Postojna Gate. Visitors can see the tank-artillery collection consisting of the most precious examples of heavy weapons (tanks, armoured vehicles and cannons), which are an important military and technical legacy of armies remained in Slovenia.

Planinsko polje Planinsko polje – a field is one of typical Karst fields. More than 8 km long river Unica flows over the field. After heavy rains the field is flooded and for a while it becomes a lake. Inside the cave system which connects Postojna cave to Planina cave, two rivers Pivka and Rak come together. The river Unica gets out of Planina cave in the extreme South and disappears into the northeast part of Planina field.

Cerknica lakeCerknica lake lies in south-western part of Slovenia, in the southern part of Cerknica field. The lake is intermittent. It is 10.5 km long and 5 km wide to its maximum extent and it is the largest lake in Slovenia. The water from the underground water caves (beautiful caves Križne jame) flows into the lake. The lake is fully charged after autumn rains and the spring when the snow melts. It disappears in May or June, sometimes even in winter.

Rakov Škocjan There is a picturesque Karst valley Rakov Škocjan between Cerknica and Planina field. The valley is about 2.5 km long, which was formed by the river Rak. Rak comes from Zelše caves. Through time the nature created the Large and Small natural bridge from the rest of the former cave roof. Rakov Škocjan was declared as the first natural park in Slovenia. The protected area measures 113 ha.


Križna jama Križna jama is world famous Karst cave. The initial part of the cave is characterized by large halls. Other passages are sometimes interrupted with sintered domes or rocks and other smaller limestone formations. The main passage continues through the Great Hall towards the stalactite Čimboras, where visitors can see exhibited bones of cave bears. Visitors can also use boats to go on lakes through the caves.
