About AndrésColombian-born, Vienna-trained Orozco-Estrada is a dynamic young conductor who is both intensely musical and technically consummate. He radiates warmth and sincerity on and off the podium, and has a special talent for sharing his admiration of music with his audience. A natural communicator, Orozco-Estrada is fluent in Spanish, German and English. He is the Houston Symphony’s first Hispanic music director. Andrés will conduct four weekends of concerts during the Centennial Season as Music Director Designate, and will begin his first full season as Music Director in 2014–15.

Centennial 100th Birthday ConcertFree Community Concert at Miller Outdoor TheatreFriday, June 21, 2013, 8:30 pm

Robert Franz, conductorCelebrate the kick-off of the Centennial Season with a free concert at Miller Outdoor Theatre open to all of Houston. The orchestra will perform classical blockbusters like Beethoven’s Ode to Joy with the Houston Symphony Chorus, selections from Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker, and John Williams’ Celebration Fanfare, written for the Houston Symphony. Plus, hear music from The Planets – An HD Odyssey, paired with images of NASA’s exploration of the solar system projected on a giant screen.

Day of MusicA Free Day-Long Celebration of Houston's Musical DiversitySaturday, July 13, 2013, 10 am–10 pm

Spend the day at Jones Hall listening to dozens of free performances representing Houston's diverse musical landscape. Begin the day with a family concert in the morning, and end the evening with a concert of favorite symphonic works by the orchestra. In between, hear jazz groups, rock bands, blues artists, ethnic ensembles, choral, chamber music and more. Plus, sample some of Houston's finest food truck fare next door at Jones Plaza.

Enjoy three concerts that conveniently begin and end earlier, while connecting you more deeply with the music. Prior to the performance, get insight about the music from concert host Miles Hoffman, NPR's Morning Edition music commentator, and then stick around post-concert for a casual Q & A session with the artists. ACCESS concerts begin at 7:30 pm and do not include intermission.Please note that ACCESS subscribers sit in different seats for each concert.

Beethoven continues a revered tradition from the 18th century in his soaring and peaceful Mass in C. Stravinsky, by contrast, takes inspiration from the 18th century for his ballet Pulcinella, but spices up the music with scattered, piquant harmonies and an infectious sense of humor.
