How can I find additional information? Who is eligible? All rising sixth, seventh and eighth grade students are welcome to apply. The STEM magnet program works well for students who have a strong interest in science, technology, engineering and/or mathematics. Students currently enrolled in the Newsome Park Elementary Math, Science and Technology magnet program and the Deer Park Environmental Science magnet program have priority. If there are more applicants than there are spaces, students will be selected by computer lottery. Siblings of 2019-20 Crittenden Middle School sixth- and seventh- grade magnet students will receive priority admission for the 2020-21 school year. How do I apply for the program? All students who wish to attend magnet programs must submit a Magnet School Application by the January deadline. Applications are available at any Newport News school, the Administration Building, and on the Newport News Public Schools website at www.nnschools.org/ magnet. Science - Magnet students in the advanced science track take accelerated courses in the sixth and seventh grades allowing them to take earth science, a high school course, in the eighth grade. All science students have the opportunity to participate in special programs sponsored by the Chesapeake Watershed Experience, Christopher Newport University, Hampton University, NASA, NOAA, Northrop Grumman, VA Air and Space Museum and Verizon. Magnet students also have the opportunity to take classes in animal science and forensics.

Technology - Technology is a vital part of all classes at Crittenden. Students are encouraged to utilize a variety of technologies to accomplish their daily work. In doing so, students develop the skills needed to solve problems. Magnet students have the opportunity to take classes in computers, graphic arts and digital photography.

earth science for high school credit in 8th grade.

• Students have the opportunity to take classes in animal science and forensics.

• There are computer labs dedicated to art, computer programming, and robotics.

Engineering - The engineering focus of the magnet pro-gram allows students to explore engineering careers and how those careers integrate mathematics and science. All Crittenden students are expected to participate in the STEM Expo, where they are presented with a design challenge they must solve. Magnet students have the opportunity to participate in robotics, technology education and computer web design.

Math - Crittenden strives to challenge students in math-ematics. Advanced math students take Algebra I in the seventh grade and Geometry in eighth grade. Accelerated mathematics options are available.

All students participate in creating a digital portfolio that allows them to showcase their work, explore career opportunities and feature their interests as well as community and vol-unteer work. Students are encouraged to select work that demonstrates their college, career and citizen-ready skills.

Crittenden Middle School is home to the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) magnet program. The goals are to open the doors of opportunity, spark the imagination of students and maintain academic excellence so that students are prepared to be responsible citizens in a global society.

Students from the middle school STEM magnet are well prepared for any high school program. They have priority for admission to the Heritage High School Governor’s STEM Academy and will need to complete an application to apply.
