How Can Sealing Foam Be Used? Sealing foam is available in a wide range of different materials, each featuring a unique set of properties and is therefore suited to a particular application. The general uses of sealing foam are to fill voids and to create a barrier that cannot be permeated by a particular substance. Sealing foam therefore has a variety of uses across domestic, commercial and industrial applications. Moreover, it can be found in use in everyday tasks or even more complex industrial operations. This unique substance can fulfil a requirement that no other material can replicate. One of the primary applications of sealing foam is in air seals. Such seals are designed to stop the flow of air between one area and another. An example of this can be found in PVC glazing units where sealing foam is used to seal the gap between glass and PVC frame, while holding the glazing in place. In this instance the use of sealing foam prevents the intrusion of cold draughts from the external environment permeating into the home. Sealing foam therefore contributes to the insulation properties of the window and the economies that result. Generally speaking, PVC sealing foam is used in this application. Sealing foam can also be used in the creation of water seals which prevent the passing of water beyond that particular barrier. Water seals are used in marine applications and in situations where exposure to water is likely. Where recurring exposure to water is likely premium neoprene sponge sealing foam may be a suitable choice. While it is relatively expensive, neoprene sponge sealing foam offers superior sealing qualities against sea water, oil and fuel. When a lower grade of sealing foam is required such as in weather strips EPDM sponge sealing foam may prove to be a suitable and lower cost alternative. Sealing foam may also be used to fill a void in an expansion joint. In such a situation a solid substance would be of little value as it would not allow for expansion or contraction. However, an empty void may not offer the insulation properties that are required. Sealing foam therefore offers an ideal solution whereby the void is filled but expansion and contraction is permitted. In such an application closed cell sealing foam should be used as it recovers easily after compression, thus retaining its capability to fill the void. PVC/nitrile sealing foam is ideal in situations where energy or impact absorption is a requirement. In addition PVC/nitrile sealing foam delivers a high standard of thermal insulation. While other materials may be able to deliver some of the properties offered by sealing foam, few if any can deliver the unique combination of properties that make sealing foam so versatile and useful.
