How did the USA react to the Cuban revolution?
By the end of the lesson you will:1.Know the causes, events and outcomes of the Cuban Missile Crisis, 19622.Have started to weigh up responsibility for the event3.Have reached a judgement about the success of the outcome
Tasks1. Read and make notes from the booklet2. From page 5 of the booklet, make notes and
then sort the reasons for Kruschev putting missiles on Cuba in to an order of importance. Explain your thinking.
3. From page 6 read, and note the options, then in pairs / groups discuss and debate the best option for Kennedy. Explain your thinking.
4. Finally look at pages 8 and 9. Again, think about, discuss and then decide who won the crisis and who was to blame. Use the headlines and newspaper clips on the following slides (and the wiki) to help. Explain your thinking.
The crisis began after the American’s found out the Soviet Union were establishing nuclear missile bases on the island of Cuba. The Soviets has long supported Cuba so they had a fairly strong relationship at the time. Here, Soviet paper Труд (orLabour) writes:“Announcement of government of USSR in regards to Invasion of Cuba: The Soviet Union will not leave the Cuban people in trouble”.
“THE NATION AT WAR”Meanwhile Cuban state newspaper Revolucion ran an extra edition warning the Cuban people to expect US military aggression and war.
