“The New Testament in My Blood”Accounts about the blood of animals are presented

throughout the Old Testament. God killed an animal to cover the nakedness of Adam and Eve after they had sinned. After the Flood, Noah sacrificed animals to thank God. Abraham sacrificed animals to worship God. The Israelites sacrificed the Passover lamb to escape God’s judgment on Egypt. Later, Moses sprinkled the blood of the sacrifices on the people and called it “the blood of the covenant” (Exodus 24:8). With this Mosaic Covenant, God described to Moses and the Israelites a full system of sacrifices that would temporarily cover the sins of the people. Lesson 96

“Not As I Will, But . . .”Have you ever dreaded an upcoming event? Maybe

you were facing something that you knew would hurt physically, like a shot or a dentist visit. Maybe you faced something that would hurt your heart like saying good-bye to someone you loved. Maybe you faced the shame and guilt of admitting something wrong you had done. We all dread these things.

Jesus had a situation like this, only it was much, much more difficult than anything we could ever face. He was about to be tortured and killed by His enemies. But much more than that, He was about to take the sins of the whole world on Himself, face the cup of His Father’s wrath, and be separated from His Father. He was full of sorrow and had a heavy spirit. When you do something wrong, you probably have guilty feelings that are pain-ful. But Jesus had never had guilt because He had never sinned. He had always lived as the Father wanted Him to live and had been in perfect fellowship with the Father. Imagine the pain and sorrow of all those sins on Jesus, the perfect Son of God. Jesus sorrowed because He knew that the cup of the Father’s wrath against sin would soon be placed on Him, breaking that fellowship. What an awful burden to face!

Jesus came to His Father in prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane. He depended on Him for guidance and help. He knew what the Father wanted Him to do, but He dreaded what was to come and asked the Father whether it were possible to avoid.

As He prayed that the cup might pass from Him, however, He asked for the Father’s will to be done instead of His own. He did not want to take all of those awful sins on Himself, be separated from the Father, and face the Father’s wrath. But His desire to please and obey His Father was greater than His desire to be freed from that burden. He fully submitted to and obeyed His Father in this prayer of agony over His coming ministry. He asked for relief but prayed for the Father’s will instead of His own: “Not as I will, but as thou wilt” (Matthew 26:39).

Lesson 98

“The Right Hand of Power”Have you ever been falsely accused of anything? Have

you ever been accused of lying when you were telling the truth? How did you react? Jesus stood silent as He was accused before the council of religious leaders. Judas had betrayed Jesus. Now Jesus was in the hands of His en-emies, and He let them make their accusations.

However, multiple false witnesses could not condemn Jesus because their stories didn’t match up. Finally, the high priest directly asked Jesus, “Are You the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?” Jesus replied, “I am, and you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven.” This statement was a powerful confession of who He is. His hour had come to openly confess Himself as the Christ.

Hundreds of years before this trial took place, God had spoken through Daniel the prophet about things to come. Daniel wrote about the Son of Man in Daniel 7:13–14. Although this is not the only place this phrase Son of Man is used in the Old Testament, it is the only place it is used in obvious connection with the Messiah.

Jesus had already used the title Son of Man of Himself throughout His ministry, and it was the primary term He used to refer to Himself. He now connected that title with the Messianic prophecy from Daniel 7. By His allusion to the passage in Daniel 7, Jesus claimed to be the Messiah. His statement, a confession of Himself as Christ, made clear many of Jesus’ teachings.

The passage in Daniel foretold that the Son of Man would be given an eternal, global kingdom. Jesus said to the high priest that He would be sitting at the “right hand of power” (Mark 14:62). This phrase refers to Psalm 110:1, where God said He would set David’s Lord (the Messiah) at His right hand. This phrase also clearly connects Jesus with the kingdom described in Daniel 7:13–14 as well. Although Jesus did not directly quote the kingdom parts of the Daniel passage, He was claiming to be the Messiah who would reign over all the peoples of the earth. He is truly the Christ, the eternal King.

Lesson 42

Anointed to . . .“Veni, vidi, vici” is a famous quote from Julius Caesar. It means “I came, I saw, I conquered.” Supposedly, this powerful ruler of Rome said this about a city he had set out to conquer. It is a dramatic way to say that you did what you came to do. Jesus also had a purpose for coming. But Jesus did not come with the arrogance of a proud Caesar. Jesus came on a divine mission. Jesus identified Himself and His mission by reading a prophecy from Isaiah. In His hometown of Nazareth, Jesus was given the opportunity to read and instruct in the synagogue as a visiting rabbi (teacher). Jesus was given the scroll of Isaiah to read from, and He chose the passage about the Promised One of God, the “anointed” (verses 18–19). Messiah (in Hebrew) and Christ (in Greek) mean anointed. So who is Jesus? Why did He come? He is God’s Anointed One. He did not come to ruthlessly conquer

those who opposed Him, as Caesar did. Jesus came to preach and do works that would meet the deepest needs of the lowliest people.“Good news for the poor” was the saying that marked Jesus’ ministry! Jesus came to minister to the captives, the blind, and the oppressed. He brought physical relief to those broken by sin. He brought spiritual freedom to those enslaved to sin. Jesus’ ministry proved that He fulfilled these prophecies. The witness of His ministry made it possible for Jesus to say, “This day is this scrip-ture fulfilled in your ears” (verse 21). Jesus was sent as God’s Anointed One with the power of the Holy Spirit (verse 14).

Unlike Caesar, Jesus did not force Himself on those who opposed Him. Jesus knew that His hometown would not accept His identity or His ministry (verse 24). There is a day when King Jesus will come back to over-throw those who oppose and reject Him. But now, the good news is not forced on anyone. How have you re-sponded to the good news of the gospel?

In the previous chapter, Peter confessed Jesus to be the Christ, the Son of God. Jesus promised to build His church. But Jesus’ enemies blasphemed Jesus, continued to reject His claims, and resisted Him. In this chapter, we will see that this conflict between Jesus as the Christ and His enemies’ opposition came to a climax. Jesus spent much time teaching His twelve disciples to prepare them for what was to come. After Judas betrayed Jesus, Pilate gave Jesus

up to the crowd’s demand for cruci-fixion. The serpent from Genesis 3:15 bruised the heel of the Seed of the woman on a cruel Roman cross. The disciples hid in fear and sorrow for three days because of Jesus’ death. At that time, all seemed lost. But God’s plan from the beginning was completed. The great themes of the Bible were accomplished on a cross on a hill and in a grave in a garden.
