How the Snow Led to Basketball

Have you ever been stuck inside and not able to go out and play? What

did you do?

Well, this happened to James Naismith and he invented the game of

basketball. In 1 8 9 1 , James Naismith was working as a P.E. teacher. It was a cold winter and his students were bored and wanted to play a game. They

were not able to go outside because it was so cold and snowy.

Mr. Naismith’s boss asked him to make up a game the kids could play inside in the winter. Mr. Naismith was creative and he liked to think of new ideas. So he used a soccer ball and two peach baskets and went to the gym. He hung

up the two baskets. Then he explained the rules to the kids. That was the first basketball game!

Mr. Naismith made 13 rules for basketball. The players could dribble and

bounce the ball but they could not move while holding the ball still. They could

only use their hands, not their feet or head. Players could not trip or hit other players or they would get a foul. They could pass the ball to other players or

throw it into the basket. Each time they threw it in the basket, it would count as a point. Players had to climb up a ladder to get the ball from the basket after every point.

Two years later, Mr. Naismith traded the peach baskets with baskets

almost like the basketball baskets we see today. This was a big change because

the old ones were closed nets. That means players still had to climb up a ladder and get the ball after every basket. This new equipment change allowed the

game to be restarted much faster.

Basketball is still a very popular sport today. Kids play basketball all over the world. It is still a great game to play inside when it is snowing!

A Very Talented Lizard

A lizard called a Basilisk lizard lives in the rainforests of South America.

This is a great place for them to live because there is a lot of tasty food.

Basilisk lizards consume plants, insects, snakes, and birds for food. But they

have to watch out because other animals will eat them too!

Basilisk lizards are very talented. This means that they can do things that

help them stay safe and live longer. For example, they are good at climbing

trees. They can climb trees to get away from other animals. Some animals

want to eat them! Basilisk lizards have green skin so they can hide behind

leaves. This helps keep them safe and secure from birds that want to gobble

them up.

Another neat trick of the Basilisk lizards is that they can run across

water! If a Basilisk lizard is scared, it will stand up on its back legs and run.

They can stay on top of the water because they move so fast and they have

special feet. Also, they have skin between their toes called webbing. This

webbing helps them stay floating on top of the water because their toes are

stuck together like a flipper! Sometimes they can run up to 15 feet across the

water. This helps them stay alive!

A Basilisk lizard is a great swimmer. It can also get away from danger by

swimming under water. These lizards can hold their breath for up to 30

minutes. This means they can stay under water until the the danger is gone. But

they need to be careful because a fish may find them and eat them as a

tasty treat!

Hot Air Balloon History

Have you ever seen a hot air balloon? They move

slowly in the air. They are very colorful and very large.

A basket hangs below the balloon and carries people in it.

Did you know that people were not the first passengers

to ride in a hot air balloon? It was 230 years ago that the first balloon went

into the air. A sheep, duck, and rooster were the only ones in the hot air

balloon. It stayed in the air for 15 minutes before coming back down. Two

months later it was time for the first person to take a ride. Imagine how

scary it would be to be one of the first people to ride in that basket above

the ground!

Have you ever wondered how a hot air balloon flies in the air? If you

see one, listen for a whooshing noise. That is from the pilot pulling on a rope

and letting fire come out of a hose. This fire heats the air inside the balloon.

When the hot air fills it, the balloon rises up from the ground. That is because

hot air weighs less than cold air. It takes a lot of hot air to pick the balloon off

the ground. That is why the balloons are so big!

Now hot air balloons are very popular. They are still flown by heating the

air with fire. Hot air ballooning is so popular that there are festivals for it all

around the world. These festivals show off the different styles and colors of

balloons. Not all of the balloons have the same shape though. Some even look

like famous cartoon animals! As long as there is a big, round, open piece of

fabric that can be filled with hot air, a pilot can make a hot air balloon!

Why Do Feet Fall Asleep?

Do you wonder how your body knows how to move? It is because of

your brain and nerves. Nerves are like a telephone between your body and

brain. Your brain sends a message through the nerves to all of your body.

That is how you can pick up a pencil, ride a bike, or kick a ball. Your brain sends a

message to your hand, fingers, feet, and legs. Your nerves are very

important. Sometimes you do not notice they are working. But you can tell when

they are not working!

Have you ever been sitting for a long time and then when you stand up,

you can’t feel your foot? That is your brain telling you that you sat too long

without moving. It means your brain could not send messages to your foot. So,

your brain took a break. The tingling feeling is your foot waking up. Your foot

starts getting the old messages. If your foot could talk, it would say “good

morning!”. It takes some time to go through all those messages.

Sometimes, when you sleep in a funny way, your feet can fall asleep.

Why does that happen? It is because you have big blood vessels in your body

called arteries. The arteries carry blood to your arms, legs, and head.

Sometimes they can get squeezed. There is nothing to worry about. Arteries

are very strong and will move blood everywhere. But if they get squeezed too

much, they can make parts of your body fall asleep. This is your brain telling

you to move around so that your arteries are not squeezed.

Next time you are sitting for too long, be sure to wiggle your feet

around! Keep those messages and the blood moving through your body!

The Deep Blue Sea

Our oceans are very large. They can stretch for thousands of miles

from shore to shore. Some parts of the ocean are as much as seven miles

deep. It would be very dark in that part of the ocean because sunlight cannot

go through so much water.

The temperature of ocean water is different around the world. Some

parts of the ocean are very warm and nice to swim in. But other parts are

very frigid. Only animals with thick layers of fat to keep them warm can

survive in such cold water.

You can find areas where the water is very clear. It may look like it is

blue in color. Sometimes the water is dark, murky, and dirty because of sand

that is stirred up by the waves.

The oceans are home to many different species of animals. This is

where they live, eat, and even sleep. These creatures can be so small that

you cannot see them. But others, like the whale shark, can be enormous. Some

live near the surface of the water and some very deep. If we are lucky, some

will even venture near the shores so that we can see them.

People enjoy the oceans too. We use them for many different reasons.

Surfers like to catch waves. Others prefer to float on rafts. You might see

people tossing a ball back and forth or leaping from under the water

pretending to be dolphins. Some may not even enter the water because they

like to lounge on the beach and get a tan instead.
