How to build your own render farm Your main workstation has a lot of power, so free it up to do better things. Installing our 3D software in Linux For this tutorial, I’m going to walkthroughthe setup for Maya and the V-Ray renderer from the desktop (not remote shell)—not because I think everyone runs it, but because it sho ws you the basic approach and problems that can arise with software installation in Linux. With the Maya Linux installer extracted to a folder on the desktop, open a termin al window and su to the root user. From the Maya install folder, drag and drop the “setup” binary ins tallation program into theterminal window and hit enter. After you enter your serial, start the install... a nd it will fail: Here is your first speed-bump in the speed-bumpy world of Linux, and, in true Linux fashion, it will not be immediately clear from any of the messages why it failed. There’s nothing inherently bad about Linux here—it’s just that the developers assume you’re familiar with Linux, so they don’t do any of the extra work of making installations foolproof. So here is the solution: you need to have the folder as the working directory to have it succeed. Type “cd “ with the space and drag the folder into the window so you get this: Enlarge/ Of course, you can type this path if dragging and dropping is too nineties for you. Hit enter to set the working directory to that path. Next type “./setup” to execute the setup binary from the local working directory (that’s the “./”). The install now works. You’ve now got one common install issue under your belt so keep this “fix” in mind for the future. After the install is done, you will be able to launch Maya from the GNOME Applications/Graphics menu. Moving on, let’s install V-Ray 3.0 (I’m using the beta) by running the installer as root–it can be done without setting the working directory first. Make sure that “Register V-Ray Render Slave As a Service” is checked on. V-Ray renderers need to be configured to look for the license server, but I’m going to skip that portion here. After the install is done, let’s go back to our master machine and run Maya to try out a network-enabled render.
