How to get from Hamburg Airport to LUEBECK and back

Arriving in Hamburg, Terminal 1 is the terminal for international arrivals and departures.

1 - Coming out of customs, this is what you will see.

2 - Now turn left to get to the airport shuttle train which is one Branch of the public transport system’s “S-Bahn” Line 1. Watch out for this sign .

3 - This is the view when turning left. On the right you can see a cash machine. This machine belongs to the Hamburger Sparkasse, the local savings bank, and will give you the same exchange rate as you would get drawing money in town, no additional airport charges.

4 – Having turned left, follow the path along the Airport building until you get to a set of glass doors.

5 -Beyond the doors turn right and go down one level to get your train ticket to LUEBECK unless you have already got one via the travel agents or the internet.

6 – The ticket machines are to your left.

7 – The stairs/escalators down to the train platform are to your right.

8 - The train will be standing on your right as you get down the escalator. It will say:

“S1 Wedel” or “S1 Blankenese”

The trainride to Hamburg “Hauptbahnhof” (Central Station) will take 24 minutes, that’s 10 stops.

9 – Arriving at Hauptbahnhof make your way into the main station building. Trains to Lübeck will in most cases go from platforms 5b, 6b or 7b. Platforms are devided into “a” and “b”. “b” means the train departs from inside the station building. The train journey will take between 42 and 45 minutes.

10 – Arriving in Lübeck go up the stairs,

turn left and take the Exit “Steinrader Weg”. Going through the glass doors the path goes slightly to the right.

11 – You will see a church with a street passing in front of it.

Turn left into that street and go straight on

12 - until you see a pub with the name “St. Lorenz Klause” on your left. Turn left into Schützenhof here (part of the road is a footpath, there is little traffic)

13 –and follow it

14 – until you get to a crossroad. Now turn right into Wisbystraße. You can already see the hotel on the opposite side of the road.

15 – The hotel has several entrances. The entrance you need for check in is, however, a good 100m further along the road. (Event and Congress Carré).

16 – To get back to the airport take a train back to Hamburg. The S-Bahn to the airport departs from the main station. There are signs to the Airport shuttle but they are not always very easily visible.

17 - The airport shuttle, the S1, departs from Platform 3. Make sure you board one of the front 3 carriages to get to the airport, since the train will be devided at Ohlsdorf station and the rest of the train will go to Poppenbüttel. So if you have to run for the train make sure change into one of the front three carriages before it leaves Ohlsdorf.

18 – Getting a ticket at the airport. Select the required language first, then select the bottom right option

19 – Select the top right – “All offers”

20 – Next select “Individual tickets” on the top right

21 – Select “Enter destination” and

22 - start typing “LUEBECK” until the machine suggests “Lübeck” (top left) and select this option.

23 – You will now be asked which route you would like to take

- Via Bad Oldesloe - Via Nahe, SE, Strukdorf - Via Büchen, Ratzeburg

Please select via Bad Oldesloe.

24 – Select “Single ticket” and press “Pay”. The ticket will cost you 13.30 € (not 17.60€ as

shown on the picture

25 - You can pay cash, the machine will accept all coins except copper as well as bank notes up to 20 €, or with a Maestro Card.

The machines do not accept credit cards.

26 – Train connections can be looked up and also booked under:

Trains will take between 42 and 45 minutes from Central station to Lübeck.

27 – Getting a ticket in the internet

You can also purchase your ticket via the above Website. This might be a lot easier.

Make sure you enter the following to select the right route:

Start: Hamburg Flughafen Destination: Lübeck Hbf (Hauptbahnhof) below Destination klick on “enter stopovers and add)

Via: Bad Oldesloe

Choose Outward and return journey and follow the instructions on the website.

28 – To get a list of several connections

Follow step 24 but select single rout and open the square buttons left to the connections suitable for you. Within the white boxes with the detailed information that will open, there is a button called “Print view” which will give you a detailed list of all the connections you have opened. Get 2 separate lists for outward and return journey. Your ticket will not be bound to the one connection you have booked.
