DISCOVeR THe URUngA~MyLeSTOM SeABOARD AReA Of THe COffS COASTExperience the beautiful beaches and sunny seaside towns and villages of Mylestom, Urunga, Raleigh and Repton, as well as the Bongil Bongil and Hungry Head nature reserves.
Travel south along the Pacific Highway from Coffs Harbour, towards Kempsey. Visit the Bongil Bongil national Park and stretch your legs on the many walking trails, or have a picnic at one of the picnic areas. Either take the Highway to Repton and Mylestom, or for a more scenic alternative, take an earlier left turn into Overhead Bridge Road and follow the road which becomes Old Coast Road, to Repton.
From Repton, beach access for 4WD vehicles is available from Tuckers Rock Road. You can drive north along the beach to Bundagen
Headland – excellent for beach fishing. Go for a scenic bushwalk taking the 1km Bluff trail, with a good chance of spotting a koala or one of the 165 bird species recorded here. Continue along the 3km Bundageree Trail from the end of Tuckers Rock Road through Bongil Bongil National Park to picturesque Bundagen Headland, returning via the beach.
Scenic rivers at Mylestom and UrungaTake Mylestom Drive, which runs from Repton along the banks of the Bellinger River to north Beach with its viewing platform, and Surf Club. 4WD vehicles can access the beach south of the Surf Club and drive to the river mouth opposite Urunga Heads.
Enjoy a BBQ at one of the many picnic tables along the stunning, deep blue Bellinger River, popular with water skiers. With a boat ramp, BMX skate park, a protected river swimming pool plus tennis courts and lawn bowls – there’s plenty to keep everyone occupied. To explore the Bellinger River up close, hire a canoe from Bellingen Canoe Adventures, who will organise a custom tour for you and even arrange pick up.
Instead of getting back on the highway, continue along the river towards Raleigh. Follow the signposts to Raleigh Winery, sample a fine selection of wines and brandy cremes and enjoy a cheese
platter on the deck. Open Wednesday to Sunday and every day during NSW school holidays. From Raleigh, either return to the Pacific Highway and drive further south to Urunga or alternatively take a scenic detour along the river, offering some good fishing
spots. From the winery, take North Street which becomes Yellow Rock Road and follow the river which takes you past farm lands and oyster leases in Back Creek. This road joins the Pacific Highway just north of
Urunga – “Where the rivers meet the sea”.Immediately after crossing the bridge over
the Kalang River at Urunga, turn right at the Visitor Information Centre. The road loops back towards the river, where you can park your car at Joy Mitchell Park and have a wander around the waterfront and boat ramp. You might want to hire a boat or rest and relax whilst enjoying some food or a drink at the café situated in a wonderful location right on the beautiful Kalang River.
Follow the road (Tourist Drive 16) into town and park somewhere around the Ocean View Hotel (est. 1927), which has
a restaurant and a family deck. Relax in the Beach Shak or one of the coffee shops in the centre of Urunga or pop into the Spar Supermarket and buy some food for a picnic or BBQ. Enjoy a walk around Morgo Park along the foreshore, by the Urunga golf Club, overlooking where the Bellinger and Kalang rivers meet. A must-see is the Urunga Boardwalk – an amazing 800m raised walk through the mangroves of the river estuary out to the breakwall and beach. Enter via the grounds of the Urunga Heads Holiday Park.
Coastal nature reserves and headlandsContinue along Tourist Drive 16 south to Hungry Head Reserve, where you can enjoy a picnic, take a short walk, get up close to the resident kangaroos and take in the views of the ocean.
