Planning a wedding, concert, fundraiser or some other special event? Find the right place to hold it, and assure yourself and others of lasting memories.

Most of us don’t have space in our homes or offices to host major events – or we don’t want the hassle of dealing with large crowds on our property. Finding a classy, well-equipped venue is vital to make any gathering a success.

A few things to consider when picking the location for your event:

LESS STRESSPlanning any major event can be stressful, so look for

a venue that can lower your anxiety level during your planning and during the event itself.

This is especially true of weddings. Look for a venue with a staff that has experience handling them – including people who will treat you and your guests with respect and grace.

Find a venue that will help you plan your event. Top-quality venues deal with vendors on a regular basis, so they should be able to give you advice on the best vendors in your area. A good venue can be a helpful event planner, and that will help relieve your stress as well.

CALL THE SHOTSPay attention to the details to ensure they are meeting

all your expectations. You should be in control of the entire planning process.

If you feel a venue pressuring you or making the decisions without your consent, look elsewhere. You want someone who will work with you to achieve your vision, not one that will try to do what is easiest for the venue itself.

Don’t fear making the big decisions. The event’s theme, style and décor should be your choice. Leave the smaller details to the venue’s staff and management. This will leave you free to focus on what’s important at your event, while leaving the minor details to others.

INCLUDED SERVICESSome venues offer hardly any services, perhaps just

handing you a key to the room. Others will help you do setup and teardown work. Setting up tables and chairs can be time-consuming. Having to take down decorations and equipment after the event is over can put a sour ending on an otherwise great day.

Read contracts carefully. Unless you need to save money and don’t mind the trouble, look for a full-service venue that offers setup and teardown as part of their pricing package.

TECHNICAL NEEDSTake note of any special technical needs your event

will need.Musical events require special technical knowledge to

create the best sound and lighting. Be sure the venue has the right electrical connections as well as audio connections and places to safely route and hide cables.

Weddings also present technical challenges. The DJ will need to find a place that offers good, clear sound on the dance floor, but also keep all cords hidden. Wedding photographers may also have preferences about where backdrops or special lighting will be located.

Finding a venue that works best for you and your vendors will help ensure a successful, stress-free event.

How to choose a VenueWith today’s active lifestyle, more and more people are

staying at hotels. You may be looking for a hotel to spend a family vacation, or for a business trip, or perhaps you are in between homes and you need temporary accommodations.

No matter what the reason is that you need to choose a hotel, you must be very careful in your decision making process. You want to choose a hotel that has a perfect mix of cleanliness, amenities and superior customer service.

Consider the following guidelines in choosing your hotel:

SEARCHThe first thing you want to do before choosing a hotel is

conduct an online search for all establishments that are in close proximity to where you will be.

For example, if you have a business meeting in a city, you will want your hotel to be in that city as close to the meeting as possible.

There will be many results online. Choose the top five closest hotels. This will ensure that you do not have to drive far to reach your destination when the time comes.

AmENITIES Your main goal is to find the most accommodating hotel

you can locate. Visit the web pages of the five hotels you have chosen and research the features and services.

Every hotel offers their customers several different benefits. Some establishments offer free access to a fitness center. Other locations may offer a continental breakfast every morning at no charge. Look for free services such as Wi-Fi access, cable television with movie channels, microwaves, refrigerators and gaming consoles.

PRICESPrice can play a huge part in where you spend your time.

Research a few of the locations to see which ones offer the services you want for the least amount of money.

Check online to see if you can find any more discounts on rooms at these locations. Many hotels and resorts offer discounts to people who are in the military, have AAA memberships or are senior citizens. Check with your employer. Some companies have an arrangement with selected hotels to provide a discount for their employees.

REVIEwSCustomer reviews are one of the most important tools you

will use to help you decide on a specific location. No matter what establishments you are considering, let the reviews help you to decide if you will spend your money to stay at a particular place.

Be sure to read a lot of reviews to get a balanced assessment of a hotel. A few negative comments would be typical but not important if there is a much larger amount of positive reviews.

The customer reviews will let you know how each hotel ranks with users. Reviews will also be able to answer some questions you may have about the friendliness of the staff and the condition of the hotel. Customers are not afraid to say when they have had a negative experience with a business.

Consider each customer comment because each one could be a prediction of how the hotel staff will treat you. If you see a significant amount of negative comments, you might want to remove such an establishment from yopur list.

SELECTIONThe final step in the selection process is picking out the

top two hotels and choosing which one is the best out of those two. Visit them if possible so that you can get a feel for the new environment. Ask questions of the concierge and hotel staff.

When you have taken all of the necessary steps, you will be able to make an informed decision. This will ensure a pleasant and enjoyable stay. After all, choosing the right hotel is very important for your comfort and happiness while you are away from home.

Choosing a daycare is not a task to be taken lightly. Your children will likely spend just as much time in daycare as you do at work, so it’s important to choose a place where you’ll feel comfortable leaving your child.

Some daycares offer a better quality of care than others, so you should research each place you are considering.

Before making your decision, visit all the places you are thinking about. Call the director to make an appointment, but also try to stop by unannounced at another time to see how things go when the daycare isn’t expecting observers.

Be sure to bring your children with you so you can get a feel for how well they will adapt to their new environment. Observe your child while you are there and gauge his or her comfort level.

Here are some things to look out for when choosing a daycare.

STAFFOne thing that can make or break a daycare is the quality and quantity

of its employees. First, find out the ratio of caregivers to children. Even the best caregiver can’t provide good, thorough care to 30 children at once without help.

Make sure they follow good hygiene habits so sicknesses aren’t spread around the daycare. Also try to observe how the employees interact with the children. Make sure they have a good rapport with their charges and seem to genuinely like kids.

Look out for whether the employees play favorites. Good daycare employees will spend equal time with everyone and make each child feel special.

BUILDINGMake sure the daycare is housed in a safe and welcoming

environment. Look for signs that it was decorated with children in mind, such as bright colors and fun décor.

Be sure the lighting is adequate and ask to check out the bathroom, dining area, and the place where children take their naps. You should also spend some time evaluating any outdoor play areas.

Every area of the daycare grounds should be set up with safety in mind. Look for locks on doors, sharp edges and dangerous objects that could be in reach of children.

ENTERTAINmENT AND ACTIVITIESYour child will spend a lot of time at daycare and you don’t want him

or her to be bored. Ensure that plenty of activities are offered to keep your child’s attention throughout the day.

Ask the director what kids do there during the day. Free play is great for the imagination, but there should be structured activities as well such as crafts, music, stories and age-appropriate lessons.

DISCIPLINEAsk the daycare providers how they discipline the children. You might

want to inquire about how they deal with specific issues you feel they may run into with your child.

For example, if your child has trouble sharing, ask how they deal with that. Make sure they take your questions seriously and give thoughtful answers. Also inquire about the rules of the daycare.

OTHER QUESTIONSFind out what the daycare’s sickness policy is. The best daycares will

have a somewhat stringent policy when it comes to illness. This is ideal because it can protect your child from catching viruses frequently.

You don’t want to pay for a month of daycare and end up using all your sick days at work to stay home with your child because she keeps catching bugs from other kids. They should also ask for your child’s vaccination records.

Throughout your visit, make sure your child seems to genuinely like the place in question. See if your child interacts well with the other children. If your child is shy, use your best judgment and see if the teachers are good at getting timid kids to engage with others.

Observe how your child interacts with the teachers and pay attention to how they address your child during the visit as well. Look out for toys and activities that your child enjoys. If your child is of speaking age, ask him directly for his opinion of the daycare.

Choosing a daycare is an important decision, so don’t rush into finding a place. Take your time and evaluate each option thoroughly before committing to one in particular.

If things don’t work out, don’t hesitate to find another daycare that is more suitable for your child. It may seem overwhelming, but with a bit of observation and intuition, you should have no trouble finding a suitable daycare for your child.

While most people don’t need locksmith services very often, it’s a good idea to choose a locksmith and keep his information handy in case of an emergency.

Don’t wait until you have locked yourself out of your car or home in the middle of the night to find one. In your panic, you’ll probably turn to the phone book or choose the first one you find on the Internet. You’re held hostage to the whims and unknown qualifications of the service you choose.

Instead, start now. Ask your friends, family and neighbors to give you recommendations for reputable ones they have used in the past.

Local small businesses in your area are another source of suggestions. They probably use a locksmith’s services often. For example, it’s often a common practice to change the locks and issue new keys whenever an employee ceases employment or loses his key. Business establishments that have experienced break-ins replace their locks as well.

It is also advisable to find a locksmith with a storefront location, open for business daily. Some disreputable companies list a street address to give the impression that they are a local established business. These addresses often belong to other businesses or vacant lots - if they exist at all. If something goes wrong you will likely have to deal with the company over the phone instead of in person at their place of business.

The locksmith you choose needs to be bonded and insured. If your doorway, car or other property is damaged while he’s performing a service, these forms of financial responsibility guarantee payment for any repairs. Without bonding and insurance, you would be responsible for paying for the repairs.

During your search for a reputable locksmith, call several establishments and ask about their pricing. Write down their quotes. Less reputable operations will sometimes boost their rates if they know you desperately need their services.

Get an estimate before work starts.

Ask the following questions: What is the minimum service charge? Is there an additional charge for mileage? How much do you charge to re-key a lock? Do you have a storefront location? Is your work guaranteed? How many years have you been in business?Make a list of likely locksmiths during your research and

narrow it down to a few you consider the best. Request the names and contact information for some of their current or past customers. Reputable smiths never worry about what their customers are going to say. Their excellent references are a point of pride with them and they are very happy to have their customers say good things about them.

Contact the smith’s customers and discuss the prices they paid and the quality of the service they received. Talk about the timeliness of the locksmith’s visits and the customers’ overall satisfaction with the results. Ask them about how long they had to wait and how much they had to pay during an emergency visit.

Locksmiths have potential access to your home and valuables. Do a background check on your chosen locksmith by contacting your local chamber of commerce, the police department or the Better Business Bureau for information on any previous complaints. Reputable locksmiths don’t mind your doing this because their good record speaks for itself.

Once you have found a reputable locksmith, keep the company’s name and telephone number handy. You may want to program this information into your home and cell phone.

Do your homework and find a reputable smith before you need him. Even if you never lock your keys in the car or fall victim to a kitchen door swinging shut at the wrong time, things happen. Lost keys, keys breaking off in locks, frozen locks – these can happen to anyone.

Qualified jewelers can be found in even the smallest towns. Choosing the right one is an important decision when it’s time to buy an engagement ring, graduation gift or any kind of memento marking a special occasion.

To get the best deal, weigh several options that best meet your needs and fit your budget. Knowing a little about how the jewelry business works is a valuable tool.

The jeweler with the best skills should top your list. Look for one who offers attentive customer service and reasonable pricing. Many people make the mistake of basing their purchasing decision on price alone. Most of us aren’t wealthy, so other factors will guide our decision.

The best jewelry professionals are skilled artisans who create beautiful and imaginative pieces with their own hands. They can also repair, clean and adjust customers’ items with ease.

Jewelers and the watch repair personnel they often employ have undergone extensive training and should have a list of certifications.

Additionally, jewelers attend periodic continuing-education classes to keep themselves current on issues and regulations in the industry. They often travel to jewelry shows geared to professionals that feature the newest trends and fashions. They also stay up to date on their knowledge and understanding of the precious metals and gemstone markets, information they gladly share with customers.

A jeweler’s technical expertise is not the only factor you should consider. You also want one who values his or her customers beyond the price of a ring or necklace. Customers who received exceptional service are likely to return for future purchases. They’ll also spread the word, recommending a good jeweler to friends and family.

Jewelers who provide guarantees should also rank near the top of your list. A good guarantee is one of the fundamentals of establishing a long-term relationship with customers.

The top professionals offer free repairs and unlimited service for the life of the jewelry.

Many jewelry purchases represent considerable financial and sentimental investments for spouses, parents, children and others. A good jeweler recognizes the emotional bonds symbolized by a special piece of jewelry and treats his customer accordingly. Long-term relationships are built from the ground up, starting with the first purchase and continuing through the following years.

Many times, a deal on jewelry seems too good to be true when you’re buying from a discount store. It usually is. The gemstones are of lower quality and the metal components are of lower purity. If the item breaks, taking it back for replacement or repair might not be possible because the seller packed up his operation and moved on. These dealers focus solely on profit. A good jeweler has a wider view.

Dealing with a jeweler you know and trust can make a big difference when it is time to make a significant investment in a special ring, bracelet, necklace or watch. He or she will make an effort to provide you with the best possible price without cutting the corners on quality.

If you have been doing business with the same shop for years, you can expect a high level of service and know the item is covered by a guarantee.

Anyone can sell jewelry. Consider all the corner jewelry stores you see at a mall. A dedicated professional jeweler doesn’t just sell things made of precious metals and gemstones. He or she also provides a measure of affection and bolsters a customer’s self-esteem.

While price is important when making a jewelry purchase, you’ll get better value for your money if you find a jeweler you can trust tomorrow and 20 years in the future. High-quality workmanship starts with the jewelry and ends with your satisfaction.

How to Choose a JewelerIf you find yourself having frequent bad hair days, it might be

time to find a new salon. No matter what kind of hair you have, the right hairstylist

can transform it into something gorgeous. Unfortunately, not all salons have amazing stylists.

If you find yourself jumping from salon to salon, it might be time to reconsider your options. Fashion experts will lead you to believe that price is an indication of quality. That is not necessarily true. Finding a great salon does not have to be a matter of luck. It takes legwork to find a right hairstylist.

GET ADVICEReferrals are a great way to find out about salons. Ask friends

and acquaintances with similar hair for recommendations. If you have curly hair, your straight-haired friend might have a different experience at the salon. Be sure the stylist and salon can deal with your hair type.

Also, ask for the name of a stylist at the salon. In many cases, it is the stylist who can make or break your salon experience.

You should also inquire about the stylist's personality. If you are shy, you will not have the same rapport with the stylist as your gossipy friend does. If you need a professional, conservative style, you might not like what a trendy stylist does to your hair.

LOOk ONLINEInternet research can go a long way in helping you refine

your list.Look at salon websites to gain insight into the business and

their values. If you are looking for a budget cut, don't worry if the site has too many features. If the salon doesn't have a website, they may be keeping costs down. In turn, it helps them offer services at a lower price.

On the other hand, if you are looking for a high-end makeover, an impressive website could be a sign of an extraordinary experience to come. It shows their attention to style as well as how modern they are.

mATCH YOUR LIFEFind a salon that matches your lifestyle. If you like to get

trims on your lunch break, make sure the salon is close to work. If you work long hours, your ideal salon will need to stay open late. If you are young and want a hip style, find a salon that is energetic and trendy.

The staff's appearance will also give you a clue on the style of the salon. Stylists usually like to experiment with their own hair. They often believe that their look is an advertisement.

If your hair is easy to cut but you have trouble finding a great color, opt for a salon that is known for its colorists. Remember that salons excel in different areas and everyone’s needs are different.

OTHER OPTIONSAlthough salons provide haircuts and styles, they may also

offer manicures, pedicures and other beauty services. If you like to get your toenails painted while your hair dye is setting, look for a salon that offers these services. Don’t just assume a high-end salon will offer massages. If this is important to you, check beforehand.

PRICEFor many people, price is one of the most important criteria

in choosing a salon. When a salon quotes a price for a haircut, find out exactly what is included.

Even high-end salons sometimes charge a separate fee for washing or blow drying. Find out in advance to avoid unpleasant surprises later.

Be sure the prices you see are applicable to your hair type and length. Many places have cheaper prices for short hair while those with longer locks pay a premium.

Your appearance says a lot about you. If you want to make a good impression, choosing the right salon is vital. It may take some trial and error but once you find the right salon for you, great hair days are within your reach.

Choosing a Great SalonWe all instinctively want what is best for our children. For this reason, many people choose to send their children

to private schools. With the outcome so important, making just the right choice seems like a daunting task.

It becomes less daunting if you give it some thought, do some research and break the process down into steps. The following tips may help you choose just the right school.

Take some time to objectively evaluate your ultimate educational goals and the needs of your child. Does your child have any natural gifts that you are seeking to nurture? Does your child have any physical or learning disabilities or behavioral issues you want addressed? Are there any particular needs or requests your child has voiced a desire to address such as sports or music?

With this in mind, ask for referrals from your child’s current school, teachers, guidance counselors, family and friends. This should give you a good starting point.

Next, make a general list of the things your ideal school would offer. Will your child attend a local day school or a boarding school? Do you have travel or budgetary restrictions? Do you want your child to have access to extra-curricular activities such as sports, band, art or debate?

You can do an Internet search for schools that meet your criteria. Most school sites have all the information you need as well as policy summaries. You can view photo galleries and even take video/virtual tours. This is a good start, but nothing replaces the experience of a real-life tour.

Depending on how far away the school is, you will need to determine whether there are suitable transportation options available to and from the school.

Once you have done the preliminary research, you are ready to make your “short list” of schools. These are the schools that fit your initial criteria and you and your child think should be in the running.

We all instinctively want what is best for our children. For this reason, many people choose to send their children

Once you have your list in hand, start filling in the details. This will help you further narrow the field. Don’t forget to determine entrance requirements and ensure that your child meets them before moving forward with a particular school.

Create a list of general questions along with a set of specific questions for each of the schools on your list. Start with a phone call to the schools. If you are still interested, make an appointment to go see the schools. While there, ask questions about the enrollment paperwork and any testing your child will have to complete.

Use your time at the school to get a feel for the atmosphere. Is it relaxed and friendly or more structured and disciplined? Most importantly, is it what you expected and will your child feel comfortable there?

Pay attention to how you are treated by the staff members. Are they friendly, helpful and respectful of your questions and concerns about your child’s education? Remember, these will be the people you will be dealing with throughout your child's school career.

Picture your family engaging in school activities, and particularly picture your child spending time there. Try to meet as many of the staff and teachers as are available. If your child attends the tours, make sure to ask her what she thinks about the schools.

After your tours have been completed, start reviewing your notes. At this point you will have already begun to eliminate schools.

Now you also have a better understanding of the total financial cost of each school. If you will need it, you should already have asked each school if they have any financial aid.

If all has gone well, you'll be able to apply to the school of your choice and have your child happily accepted.

How To Choose a Private SchoolWhile not everyone is born with that perfect set of teeth, an

orthodontist has the skills to create one for his patients. A perfect smile gives an impression of confidence, health and happiness.

A good orthodontist provides a treatment regimen customized to the individual and delivered through compassionate service.

Orthodontists all complete similar education and training requirements but not all are equally gifted and caring practitioners. There are several traits the best ones all share.

Word-of-mouth recommendations from neighbors, friends and co-workers provide some of the best information. People who have had a positive experience while sitting in an orthodontist’s office are usually eager to spread the word.

SERVICEGood service is one of the prime factors in finding a good

orthodontist. You’re going to be visiting him or her frequently for a year or more. It’s wise to find one with whom you can build a relationship based on trust and mutual respect.

You’ll endure some physical discomfort while in the treatment chair. That’s expected. However, the patient waiting area should be comforting and soothing.

Many initial visits are free to new patients, so pay close attention to the way the staff treats you and others. Children are often orthodontic patients, so watch their actions and emotions closely. You’re going to be seeing a lot of the staff as well as the doctor for several months. It helps if you and they share a cordial relationship.

People lead busy lives. An orthodontist who schedules appointments to reduce waiting time is a treasure. Hold out for one who respects your time schedule.

Feeling at ease with your orthodontist is another important factor in having a good overall experience. The best ones personally perform most of the work on your braces themselves and won’t offload it on staff members.

Having an orthodontist who listens to your questions and provides clear answers is a necessity. You’re not just a number on a patient file. A good orthodontist regards you as a valued client and treats you accordingly.

Dental assistants are active and contributing professional members of your treatment team, so it is wise to form good relationships with

them. They perform a number of important treatment phases and have undergone rigorous training supplemented by continuing education classes.

TECHNOLOGYThere are several orthodontic systems for straightening teeth. Ask

your doctor during your first visit about which technologies he uses. Each system is quite different from the others in terms of appearance and function. Some require more adjustments than others, and some take longer to do the job.

This is also the time to ask lots of questions about the technology. Your orthodontist should explain the trade-offs between one system and another. Each system has its strengths and weaknesses. Ask him to explain why he or she prefers one method over the others.

There are always advances being made in orthodontic procedures and the patient is the one who really benefits. One popular option for braces is the Damon System, which doesn't use elastic or metal ties. Since there are no "rubber bands" in your mouth, the Damon System is a discreet, comfortable, easy-to-clean choice that doesn't attract plaque like older-style braces that use elastic ties.

CLEAR BRACESClear braces are a great option for people who are concerned

about how their mouths will look during treatment. While invisible braces are heavily promoted, they aren’t right for every patient. Clear braces are the next best thing.

Orthodontic patients are unique from one another. Some have teeth that are more crowded than their neighbor’s, while others have special individual needs. Clear braces often work better for these people than do clear aligners, a more gradual straightening technique.

If you’re considering clear braces, ask your orthodontist why he or she uses a particular type. This information will help guide your choice in which system you opt for.

Orthodontia is a significant investment not only of time and money but also of self-esteem. It doesn’t pay to let just anyone put his or her hands in your mouth to twist wires and make you miserable for a few days. The right combination of education, certification, experience and personality and technology should make the months of suffering worthwhile.

One of the most crucial things you can do to ensure optimal health, is to maintain the health of your eyes. It is particularly important for those who do not currently have any noticeable trouble with their eyesight, as they are the most likely to put a visit to the eye doctor on the back burner.

Routine eye exams are vital to your overall health. Getting your eyes checked frequently will make it more likely to catch vision problems early, when they are easier to treat and more likely to lead to better outcomes.

Here are some things to consider when choosing an eye doctor:

INSURANCEIf you have health or vision insurance, be sure to check the

list of doctors that are covered by your insurance plan. Different insurance companies make arrangements with doctors or eye care groups to deliver service at a prearranged price. If you pick an “in-network” eye doctor, you’ll be saving money with lower co-pays and out-of-pocket costs.

TYPES OF DOCTORSOptometrists are required to complete four years of

undergraduate study and earn their bachelor’s degree before applying to Optometry school. A medical degree (O.D.) is achieved after the four year optometry school program is completed. An optometrist is a primary care eye doctor and also completes an internship/residency program.

Ophthalmologists are medical doctors who specialize in eye diseases. They receive a full medical degree — just like your family doctor — before embarking on their specialist training for eye treatment. Their training usually includes four years of pre-med school, four years of medical school, at least one year of an internship and three years of residency before being licensed as an ophthalmologist. In addition to treating vision problems, they can provide medical care, surgical care and sometimes plastic surgery.

TRAININGEye doctors receive different kinds of training and often

specialize in certain diseases or treatments. If you’ve been diagnosed with cataracts, for example, it would be ideal to find a doctor with plenty of experience specifically treating cataracts.

Feel free to ask your local eye doctors about their experience treating your needs.

REFERENCESBe sure to get references for good eye doctors in your area.

Your medical doctor could be a good place to start. Doctors will often refer you to an eye care specialist that has the most experience treating your specific needs.

Friends and family can also provide great advice. Most people have had eye exams in the past and could tell you who they used and why. They could provide first-person insight about issues, such as wait times or whether a certain doctor works well with children.

SELECTIONMany people are interested in a particular style or brand

name for their frames, lenses or contacts. If you already know what you’re looking for — such as a set of glasses from a particular designer — look for an eye care specialist who can make it easy to find that particular pair.

When buying glasses, it’s important to find a doctor and an optical store where you can look at a wide range of products. The lenses and frames can vary widely in terms of their comfort, appearance, price and quality. There are an estimated 109,967 plants and over 2,600 garden centers spread across the United States. So, how do you make the right choice?

DO THE RESEARCHWhen researching a garden center ask your friends and

neighbors for referrals. The best recommendations come from actual customer experience. Just because a company’s website is colorful and bright does not necessarily mean they are the best place to shop. Do you have a friend or neighbor who loves to garden? Have you noticed a beautiful garden in your area? If you do, then ask them who they use.

Determine the specialty of each garden center. While some garden centers have a wide variety of products, most have a few products that they specialize in. Are those the products that you are interested in?

VISIT THE GARDEN CENTERAfter you have researched the garden center, then visit and

get a feel for the place before making a final decision. Look at the quality of plants in the garden center. Do they

look healthy? Do they seem to be well taken care of? Is there a good variety?

Ask the sales person a question. Think about a problem you have experienced in the past and ask them about a solution. The sales person should be knowledgeable about possible solutions. Notice if the sales person is friendly and personable.

Find out how long the garden center has been there. Good businesses usually stay in the same location for a long time, and are usually operated by the same people for a long time.

Ask about who owns the garden center. Usually plants grown locally are better quality and better suited to thrive in your area. After all, they are produced to be grown in your area. Plants grown locally usually have fewer diseases. Some of these diseases will not be apparent until you take the plants home. Also it is important to support local businesses and farmers. Prices may be cheaper at the big box stores but you certainly

get what you pay for. Once you decide on a garden center is it time to make

your purchase! Proper plant selection is the key to successful landscaping no matter the time of year. Plants that are well suited to their site will establish quickly. They will have a strong root system and be healthier plants.

Often when it comes to planting many people only think of spring. However, fall is a great time for planting and in some cases is more beneficial to the plants than planting in the springtime. Fall is a great time to plant perennials, bulbs, cool weather vegetables, grasses, trees and shrubs.

Before you get to your local garden center you should have a general idea of what you want and what you are trying to achieve. Impulse buying is a common mistake. Sometimes what looks pretty at the nursery may not be well suited for your property. Every plant has it’s purpose. Be armed with pictures and a simple map of your landscape. Some other important factors when selecting a plant include:

• Light availability, intensity and duration (full sun to deep shade)

• Water availability, both quantity and quality• Exposure to wind and temperature extremes• Soil type, drainage, compaction• USDA Hardiness Zone (Rhode Island ranges from 5B-7A)• Competition from existing vegetation• Both underground utilities and above wiresA well landscaped yard will include a variety of plants with

different textures and seasonal interests. Many people are focused on the beautiful spring blooms and forget to include items that can provide visual interest throughout the summer, fall, and especially winter months, a time when many landscapes can look tired and dull.

Fall is an excellent time to step back and evaluate your landscape to see what worked and what didn’t. Plants are an investment, they will be there for years to come and should be planted and spaced accordingly.

People who suffer from back, head or neck pain, often find relief by visiting a chiropractor. These trained professionals believe that realigning your spine will help relieve tension throughout the body.

Treatments can also help your muscles, joints, bones and ligaments.

This type of care can improve your general health as well. Some patients discover headaches and other ailments heal after treatments.

Whether you are experiencing pain or just want to improve your overall well-being, you might benefit from seeing a chiropractor.

Here are some tips for finding the right chiropractor to fit your needs.

QUALITYAccording to the American Chiropractic Association,

accredited chiropractors go through at total of at least 4,200 hours of classroom, laboratory and clinical training time combined.

The educational requirements are among the most stringent in the health care industry. Each student spends four years in a pre-medical program, in addition to the required four or five years of professional training.

This rigorous training ensures you will receive expert care. Before choosing a chiropractor, ask about their training and

credentials.

INSURANCE COVERAGECheck with your insurance company to make sure your visit

is covered. Most insurance carriers include chiropractic care as part of their regular coverage.

Find out if your insurance company offers discounts for

choosing an “in-network” chiropractor, such as a lower co-pay or more affordable coverage.

In addition, most chiropractors offer affordable payment plans or low cash rates to help patients who aren’t covered by insurance. Even without health insurance, many people still find that chiropractic care is a cost-effective method of treatment that gets good results.

GET REFERRALSOne way to find a good chiropractor is to ask your family,

friends and co-workers for referrals. Chances are someone you know has received excellent treatment from a chiropractor. They are usually happy to share their experiences with you.

Ask about the chiropractor’s demeanor and the ease with which you can schedule office visits. You should inquire about the chiropractor’s philosophy about health and other wellness topics. Some practitioners will also recommend other forms of care, including massage.

By taking your time to find a good chiropractor in your area, you are guaranteeing yourself the affordable, convenient and effective health benefits that come from chiropractic care.

With the cost of medical care skyrocketing, chiropractic care is still rather affordable. Given the results it can provide, it is also usually well worth the money.

Unlike the ridiculous amount of time spent in waiting rooms for large doctor’s offices, chiropractors are usually quick to see their patients. Despite the hectic schedule you may have, they can usually find a time that fits into your busy day.

Overall, people are satisfied with the care they get from their chiropractor and will gladly tell you about it. However, the best way to see what it is like is to try it for yourself.

How to choose a ChiropractorWhen you feel sore or exhausted, there is no better way to

pamper yourself than paying a visit to a massage therapist. But not all massage therapists are the same. Choosing the best one for you requires some planning and thought. You may have to try several therapists before finding the best one for you. There are also a variety of different massage specialties.

Before you make an appointment, there are many things to keep in mind.

TRAININGMost states require a license before a therapist can accept

clients; however there are others with no license or certification requirements.

No matter where you live, choose a massage therapist who has undergone professional training. Massage therapy is an accepted medical practice, so finding a well-trained professional is vital.

Proper training is especially important if you have a muscle injury. In these cases, consult a doctor to find a massage therapist who is trained to meet your medical needs.

SPECIALIzATIONSThere are more than 250 different kinds of massage therapies

available, including deep tissue massage, aromatherapy, Swedish massage, and hot stone massage. They can also involve lotions, powders and oils designed to either increase or reduce friction as part of the process.

With so many choices, it is important to research your options. There is no need for surprises. Knowing what to expect will help you feel comfortable.

Communicate with your massage therapist. Many of them specialize in more than one type of massage. Find out what they specialize in, because that's the procedure they're going to be best at performing.

REFERENCES, HAPPY CUSTOmERSLIke any business, good massage therapists will have plenty

of happy customers. If your friends or family members get massages regularly, ask them for recommendations. Word of mouth is often the best and most honest.

You can also ask message therapists for references. Talk to people who have used their services in the past to see if their techniques are effective.

PRICINGThe prices for massage therapy can vary dramatically

depending on the type of massage, the therapist's training and other factors.

Your health insurance company may cover part of the bill. Some insurance providers will pay for massage therapy when it is prescribed by an osteopath or chiropractor.

PERSONALITYMassage therapy is a very personal business, one that

requires direct one-on-one interaction with another person for long periods of time.

While this may not be your main consideration, consider whether your therapist's personality is a match for yours.

To relax and get the best benefits from a massage, you should feel comfortable. Part of that comes down to how well you get along with the therapist.

LOCATIONFinally, consider where the massage therapist is located. He or she should have an office that is convenient to where

you live and work. The office should also be neat, clean and professional-looking.

You might also consider massage therapists who will make visits to your home or office. Having a massage therapist come to you is, for many people, the ultimate luxury.

Every event looks better with flowers. Whether it is a wedding, corporate dinner or birthday party, a bouquet is perfect for every occasion. A beautiful arrangement will create a festive atmosphere. Choosing the right florist is key to your success.

RESEARCH THE FLORISTOnce you have a venue for your event, ask the staff for

recommendations. They will often know of the best florists in the area. Popular florists fill their schedules quickly, so begin the process right away.

Another great place to get suggestions is from friends and family. Be sure to collect valuable details about their experiences, including prices.

Narrow your list down to florists who appeal to you. Then start interviewing them.

Look for floral arrangements in magazines. Clip out these photos and put them in a notebook with notes about why you like these flowers.

Call florists to see who is available for your date. If a florist is unavailable, drop him or her from the list. For those who are available, set up a time to speak with them. Telling them your estimated flower budget to allow them to prepare suggestions before the meeting.

INTERVIEw THE FLORISTWhen you enter the shop, be observant. By watching the

cleanliness, organization and friendliness of the store, you will be able to understand how the florist will act when working with you on a personal basis.

All the flowers in a store should be well-watered and attractively arranged. Employees should be attentive but not pushy. The best florists usually have a large variety of floral arrangements in the front of the store.

During the meeting, ask if the florist has worked previously at your venue. Venues can have unique rules about what they

allow in their location. Finding that a florist has previously worked with the event staff assures you that they know and can adhere to the rules.

Since the florist already has your budget, ask for his or her suggestions. The florist should be able to give you numerous suggestions of about flowers and arrangements.

Ask to see photos of arrangements the florist has made in the past. Each florist has his or her own personal flair. Most event planners will find that they connect better with one florist than another.

Show the florist your notebook. Discuss what arrangements you like and why. Ask if the florist could produce similar arrangements.

Request recommendations from the florist about other event professionals. You want everyone on your team get along well with each other. A relationship between your caterer and your florist is especially vital.

Once you have determined the florist you want, it is important to nail down the specifics. Confirm what type of arrangements the florist may make even though you may not know exactly the flowers that will be used.

You should also know when the arrangements will arrive at your venue and who is responsible for placing the flowers in the appropriate spots. Know when payment for the flowers is expected. Be sure you understand the contract before you sign anything.

GET IT IN wRITINGIf you are pleased with the company's work, consider

assisting the shop with positive references and reviews.Using flowers to decorate enhances any event. Make sure

to rely on a professional florist to perform this valuable service. The wonderful colors and beautiful aroma will aid everyone's enjoyment of the day.

How to Choose a Florist

More than 40 million Americans suffer some degree of hearing loss, frequently affecting day-to-day life for them and the people around them.

To reduce the potentially serious consequences of hearing loss, such as safety issues and isolation, many people seek out hearing aids to help them live richer, fuller lives.

Hearing aids are highly technical medical devices, customized to meet the patient's specific needs. Every person's ear canal and type of hearing loss is different, ranging from mild to severe, and often affecting some frequency ranges more than others.

Today's hearing aids use digital processors to isolate and amplify the frequencies the patient needs most, and many of them are so small they're virtually invisible.

Here's a look at how to choose hearing aids:

STYLESHearing aids come in a range of sizes and prices, and

a specialist can help you pick the right ones to meet your needs.

Among the most popular are hearing aids that fit completely within the ear canal. These are virtually impossible to see, but their small size means they are typically more expensive and may not have as long a battery life as larger hearing aids.

Other styles include half-shell, full-shell, behind-the-ear and open-fit hearing aids.

INTERNAL ELECTRONICSEach hearing aid also comes with advanced electronics

that will amplify the correct frequencies and help your hearing be as close to natural as possible. The best ones can filter out background noise, enabling the wearer to hear conversations clearly even in crowded settings.

Like most electronic devices, the way hearing aids are designed can make a big difference in their performance and their pricing. Two hearing aids that look similar may actually sound very different based on how the electronics work inside them.

Nearly all of today's hearing aids are digital, which results in better sound and more customization options for people who suffer from hearing loss. If you have outdated hearing aids, it may be smart to consider upgrading to the more modern devices because of how much better they sound and how much more easily they can be hidden within your ear.

OPTIONS

Just like the options list when you buy a new car, hearing aids can be fitted with special features that may be helpful for you. Some examples:

BLUETOOTH CONNECTIONS: Some hearing aids are able to connect wirelessly to Bluetooth electronic devices, such as cellular phones, to let you hear phone conversations directly through your hearing aids.

TELEPHONE ADAPTERS: These devices can sense when you’re talking on the phone and adjust the sound to make it clearer while you talk.

DIRECTIONAL MICROPHONE: If you want to only hear that sound directly in front of you, such as when you’re having one-on-one conversations with a person, a directional microphone can improve your hearing. Some can be switched between directional mode for conversations and non-directional for more general hearing, like at a concert.

REMOTE CONTROL: Some hearing aids are available with remote controls that let you adjust the device without actually touching it. You might turn the volume up or down, for example, or turn the directional microphone on or off.

Chronic knee pain is excruciating, but you can do something about it. In the past, surgery was the only option for knee pain. While surgery may be required in some cases, it should be your last resort. There are other alternatives to consider before com-mitting yourself to months of recovery time and great expense.

REDUCING AND ELImINATING PAINReducing and possibly eliminating pain is the first step to-

ward avoiding knee surgery. You can typically accomplish this task through exercise and physical therapy.

After exercise or athletic training, give your knees time to heal. Proper rest will reduce the possibility of additional stress to the joints. For the first day or two, take time off from rigorous activity and then gradually reintroduce exercise to your daily routine.

Physical therapists rely on the “10 percent rule” when work-ing with patients. The rule is easy to follow. After a couple of days of rest, physical activity is resumed in 10 percent incre-ments. If your body is handling the increase well, your activity is increased by 10 percent each week thereafter until you are back at full strength.

While you are strengthening your knees, consider replacing your shoes. Improper and uncomfortable footwear is the root cause of a great deal of knee pain. It is especially true for wom-en, who wear shoes that are more fashionable than functional. Replace your heels with flat alternatives whenever possible.

If heels are an absolute must, consider wearing boots or shoes that are wide in the heel. It will provide more support than the average fashion heel. Adding arch supports to your shoes can also help alleviate knee pain.

Don’t sacrifice your comfort in the name of fashion. If you are addicted to heels, consider those made by Stuart Weitzman, a former podiatrist. His footwear promotes healthy blood circula-tion and support.

ALTERNATIVES TO SURGERYKnee surgery often requires extensive recovery. It can also

be quite costly. The following tips may help alleviate your pain.Consider trying some home remedies. Taking a joint supple-

ment that contains adequate levels of glucosamine and MSM can help some people. Do keep in mind that it can take up to six weeks of consistently taking supplements to begin to notice a reduction in pain. Try drinking warm gelatin to lubricate your joints and temporarily relieve discomfort.

Get adequate exercise. The more you move, the more you lubricate your joints. Exercising with free weights will add strength and stability to tendons and joints, improving your sta-bility.

Take up yoga. Both Bikram and Hot Yoga can increase flex-ibility as well as mobility in your joints.

Try losing some weight. Losing just 10 to 15 pounds can re-duce the stress on your knees, staving off surgery.

Wear support braces. Knee braces keep your joints aligned properly and allow you to continue your fitness routine and daily activities.

Many physicians will prescribe injections to alleviate knee pain. Hyaluronic and Botox injections are commonly used to relieve knee pain in chronic sufferers.

Ask your doctor about corticosteroids. Consider injections rather than oral steroids as there are fewer associated side effects. Corticosteroids can reduce inflammation and, in turn, reduce pain in some patients.

Knee surgery can be a painful process. By making simple changes in lifestyle, you could delay or eliminate the necessity for surgery. Speak with your doctor to find out if one or more of these alternatives are the right solution for you.

How to Avoid Knee Surgery

Your car’s transmission is a vital part of making it run. Transmissions have evolved over the years and now require fluid to lubricate shifts. This fluid should be replaced periodically to help keep the transmission in good working order.

But sometimes breakdowns happen even if you have kept good, clean transmission fluid in it.

Here are a few suggestions for finding a transmission repair shop to maintain and repair your car’s transmission:

LOOk FOR A SHOP THAT ENCOURAGES PROPER mAINTENANCE

Transmissions have hundreds of parts that work together in a complex manner. Having it serviced or flushed every 20,000 miles can prevent problems down the road.

Try to find a shop that encourages good maintenance. Good shops provide a power flush to remove and replace all fluid.

Some carmakers suggest servicing the transmission every 50,000 miles. But lots of car owners have found that not servicing their transmission often enough has resulted in breakdowns and costly repairs. It can even cost so much to replace a transmission that some people decide to just buy a new car instead – and that is exactly what automakers hope you’ll do. It’s better to err on the side of caution and replace your transmission fluid more often.

SEARCH FOR PROPERLY TRAINED SPECIALISTS

If you have a defective transmission you want repaired, be sure to choose a specialized transmission shop with a good record of fixing transmissions right the first time. Some shops require multiple visits before the work is done correctly. Look for evidence the mechanics have completed training in a wide range of transmissions.

Never use a general auto repair shop or dealer service for transmission repairs. They will usually send the work out to a

transmission specialist and raise the price to make their own profit. You can save money by going straight to the transmission shop yourself.

CHOOSE A CREDIBLE REPAIR SHOPAAA offers a listing of repair shops that have been vetted

and rated. These shops have agreed to mediation through AAA if any disputes arise.

The Better Business Bureau can provide you with a list of shops that do not perform well or who have had complaints lodged against them. If you are considering a national chain, the Bureau of Consumer Investigations also notes which shops are not reputable.

DETERmINE THE TYPE OF REPAIR wORk TO BE DONE

Transmission work requires removing the transmission from the vehicle. This is labor intensive and can cost $500 before any work is ever done. And even minor repairs to a transmission can require the entire transmission to be rebuilt.

The two options for repairing a transmission are remanufacturing or rebuilding. Remanufacturing re-makes the transmission from used cores and replaces all moving parts. These are the most thoroughly rebuilt transmissions and are equivalent to purchasing a whole new transmission

It is more common to rebuild transmissions. It involves replacing worn-down parts.

PREPARE FOR HEFTY REPAIR COSTSPrice depends on complexity and the extent of the rebuild.

Since the basic labor itself is quite costly it makes sense to get a complete rebuild rather than fixing minor issues one at a time.

Rebuilt transmissions usually offer a one-year/12,000-mile warranty. Remanufactured transmissions are more dependable but cost more. The standard warranty is 100,000 miles.

Many people, at some point, find that living independently at home isn’t a viable option anymore.

Cost is often first on the list of factors when people are looking at assisted living facilities. A clear understanding of the costs is beneficial, but it's not necessarily the most important consideration.

While one facility may be all-inclusive, another may not. Facilities also may charge separate fees for special services.

A top consideration should also be the quality of care and record of satisfaction from current and former residents and their family members.

While making a short list of facilities to visit, be sure to do an online check of the assisted living homes in your area. Many sites will have reviews from family members and residents.

Personally visit any facilities you are considering. Pay close attention to the condition of the buildings, look at the calendar of events and ask about any activities available for residents.

Try to visit when you are most likely to meet residents and their family members. Early evening and weekend days are best. Talk to some of these people and get honest opinions regarding staff, amenities and accommodations.

In the first stages of your planning, you may find that your facility needs to meet only minimal requirements. You or your loved one may need a secure environment or someone on hand in case of a fall or illness. But as time goes on, these needs may change.

Be sure the facility you are considering can change with your needs. If mobility issues become a concern, the size and layout of the center may become important. Eventually, you may find you need someone to give medication, manage appointments, provide transportation and provide more personal levels of care.

Some assisted living facilities provide increasing levels of care as requirements of their residents change. Others meet only a specified level of care and will require that you leave the facility should your needs increase.

Whether it is you or a family member that will become part of the assisted living community, your experience should be pleasant. The move will be less stressful for all involved if the facility most closely resembles the lifestyle to which you are accustomed.

Make a list of the things in your life that are important to you. Whether it’s gardening or crafting or some other hobby. Look for a facility that will let you continue on with these hobbies once you’ve moved in.

If you enjoy exercise and are physically able to do so, look for a center that has a gym, exercise room or secure place to walk. If you are a social butterfly, look for a facility that allows plenty of opportunity for socializing.

Moving into an assisted living facility doesn’t have to be stressful or unpleasant. With the proper research, you can ensure that you or your loved one will be well cared for while still being able to enjoy life.

How to Choose anAssisted Living Facility

People often need care as they age or face debilitating disease. And the care required can be more than friends or family are able to give.

Previously, long-term care could be handled only by a nursing home -- which could prove to be both expensive and traumatic for the patient. Living in a hospital-like setting for an extended time is not a pleasant option for most.

Because of this, assisted living centers have become more popular in recent years.

People needing regular medical attention, but who want to keep an active lifestyle may enjoy an assisted living facility. These centers provide more attention than the patient could get at home, but in a more comfortable setting than a traditional nursing home.

Assisted living facilities can be more cost-effective, convenient and comfortable than a full-time medical facility such as a nursing home. And there are a variety of options.

When choosing an assisted living facility for yourself or a loved one, here are some things to look for.

GARDEN AND LANDSCAPINGWhen you tour any assisted living center, look at the

landscaping design. Proper maintenance of the lawn and gardens is a good sign.

If your loved one enjoys spending time outside, look for a facility that has park-like areas for residents. Some centers even offer community-style gardens and outdoor walkways for the residents.

HOmE AmENITIESConsider all of the options offered by the center and see

how they meet your budget. Accommodations can range from luxurious detached cottages to cozy apartments.

When touring living spaces, think of how furniture will be

arranged and decorations will be hung. The ability to picture your loved one’s belongings in the space will help you decide whether you’ve found the right place.

RECREATION FACILITIESCommon areas are a great. Game and meeting rooms

provide opportunities for residents to take part in activities outside of the confines of their room. From large living rooms to rooms dedicated to specific activities, be sure that the center offers things to occupy your loved one’s time.

The best facility for your loved one will offer activities that match his or her hobbies. If your family member loves to craft, for instance, look for a center with a craft room or craft classes so your loved one can continue that hobby.

PERSONAL CAREServices can range from very basic to intensive depending

on the needs of the residents they cater to.Ask your loved one’s physician how much care that person

needs to function safely. The doctor may also be able to recommend an appropriate facility in your area.

Any qualifications held by the staff of the center should be made clear. Your family member’s doctor can be helpful in advising you what qualifications and certificates you should look for in the center’s staff.

Paying for extensive medical care when it’s not what your loved one requires is simply a waste of money. Knowing what your family member needs will help you find an assisted living center that is tailor-made for them.

At the end of the day, choosing an assisted living facility should center on finding the appropriate mix of services and amenities that suit your family member’s needs. Finding the perfect match will ensure the comfort of your loved one and your peace of mind.

Putting a loved one into a managed care facility can be a difficult decision, especially for those who have a loved one suffering with Alzheimer’s or dementia.

Fortunately, there are many options when it comes to Alzheimer’s and dementia care centers, though it can be difficult to determine one center’s level of care over another.

If you find yourself in the difficult situation of having to place a loved one in an Alzheimer’s center, look for these features to find the perfect program for your loved one and your family:

First, look for a care facility that is dedicated solely to treating those patients with Alzheimer’s and dementia.

These disorders are very complex and require staff that is both knowledgeable and dedicated to their patients. Look for a facility that employs staff that is very knowledgeable in the care and treatment of those with Alzheimer’s.

Ask to see the center’s policies regarding experience requirements of staff as well as ongoing or continuing education for the staff.

An Alzheimer’s care facility should treat each patient as an individual. A patient should be evaluated to determine where he falls in the Alzheimer’s spectrum – beginning, middle or end stages – and care should be tailored to the patient’s personal needs.

Be sure that your loved one is assessed on a regular basis as care requirements change with the level of Alzheimer’s or dementia he or she is experiencing.

Someone in the beginning stages, for example, may need only minimal assistance while someone in end-stage dementia may need 24-hour care and attention. The best facilities understand this and require regular evaluations and adjust the level of care as needed.

Check out the living environment at the center. Are there gardens for relaxing? Quiet sitting areas for

meditating or reading? Are the rooms comfortable? Your loved one will be living at this center, and it is important that he or she feels at home. This will ensure your loved one’s ease of transition into the care center.

Living in a care center should not feel like boot camp, nor should it feel like a locked hospital ward. A perfect facility will ensure that their residents are just that: residents. Your loved one should be able to live in a way that he or she is comfortable and happy while having access to round-the-clock medical care.

Be sure that the facility has activities, outings and other services for the residents. A great center will give residents access to supervised picnics, fitness classes, craft classes, religious events and field trips to ensure that their residents remain as active as possible for as long as possible.

If your loved one will be leaving a pet behind, look for a center with a pet therapy program.

Before deciding on a residential facility, tour the center and get a feel for the environment. Ask to see a model resident room and, if permitted, ask to speak to some of the residents.

If you can, tour the center on a weekend when residents are more likely to have visitors; doing so will allow you to speak to other family members who have had to make the decision you are making now.

Those professionals who care for people with Alzheimer’s and dementia know that family support makes all the difference. The center should provide ample opportunity for family visits, activities and outings that the family can take part in.

By following these guidelines, you’ll be assured of picking the best program available to you and your loved one.

How to Choose Alzheimer's Care

If you and your aging loved one are considering full-time nursing care, be sure to, invest plenty of time to choose the right facility.

A quality environment will help your parent, grandparent, sibling or other loved one live a happy and stable life. You benefit from having peace of mind as well.

There are several factors to consider when choosing a high-quality care center for your loved ones. A good choice will mean a higher quality of life for people facing increasing physical frailty and less stress for their families.

VISIT THE FACILITYThe first step is taking a tour of the potential facility. You

should get a good vibe from the center. A physical visit also provides clues about the general atmosphere and morale of the residents. Lots of natural light, a cheerful décor, attractive wall art and hints of laughter from the staff and patients are good attributes.

While on the tour, pay close attention to its cleanliness, staffing levels and the meeting of the residents’ needs. Is the air fresh and free from unpleasant odors such as urine, feces and stale food? Are there enough nurses and other attendants on duty? Do the residents look happy, are they dressed appropriately and do they seem clean and freshly bathed?

Bring the prospective resident along with you on the tour. The facility may become his or her home, and he or she deserves a voice in selecting or rejecting a facility. Feelings of safety and welcome are cues that this could be a positive living experience.

Residents' quality of life is enhanced by opportunities for socializing. Look for a facility that offers regular activity periods for music and crafts, an outdoor area for enjoying the sunshine.

Most nursing home facilities will be happy to provide you with a tour of their homes. Once you have toured the building, request a consultation with a staff member. This will provide the opportunity to ask any questions you may have and address any special needs of the patient.

Possible lines of questioning include the availability of different types of physical and occupational therapy, accommodation of patients' doctors' appointments outside the facility and access to barbers and hairdressers by the residents.

ASk OTHER PEOPLEIt may be possible to strike up a conversation with a relative

of a patient currently in the nursing home. Ask them for their honest opinions of the facility.

Good questions include queries about the staff and the quality of care received by the residents. Solicit their input on whether to place your own loved one in the facility.

Residents’ family members are usually eager to share their experiences and impressions with you. They know all too well the anxieties you are having as you make this important decision.

ASk THE DOCTORIf you’re still undecided about a placement in the facility you

toured and the answers you received from patients’ families, talk with your loved one's primary care physician. He or she may be able to suggest good nursing facilities in the area or provide information on similar homes.

The physician may recommend a couple of additional facilities that might not have appeared on your original list. If the patient has special needs, the doctor may be aware of a facility or center that can best meet these specific requirements.

It is never easy making the decision to place a loved one in a nursing facility. Tour a few centers, decide which ones meet or exceed yours and your loved one’s expectations and carefully weigh your impressions and the recommendations of others.

You are making one of life’s most difficult choices. It takes time and diligence to research and tour even a narrowed list of nursing facilities. The effort will pay off in terms of better quality of life for your loved one and peace of mind for you.

Placing a loved one in a skilled nursing facility is a difficult choice for all involved. The loved one faces losing his or her independence. Finding the right facility can be a tough and confusing process because of the hundreds of choices.

Overwhelmingly, the staff and administrators watch over your loved ones as they do their own family members.

Skilled nursing facilities that have earned high marks from your state’s nursing-home regulatory agency or department of health are your best choices. The nursing staff members in these facilities are usually required to have completed a formal state-mandated certification process.

Choose a facility located close to the family and friends of the person entering skilled care. Frequent visits from people close to the patient often smooth the transition from independent living to a skilled nursing environment.

Your loved one needs reassurance that he or she will be safe and well taken care of by a highly skilled nursing staff. The level of care is higher in a skilled facility than it is in an assisted living one.

Residents of assisted living facilities live in a somewhat private environment and are able to perform most of their daily living activities with minimal assistance from the staff on duty. A skilled nursing facility provides more personal care for older people who need help with daily living because of advanced age, severe illness or infirmity.

The staff at these types of facilities is much more skilled and regulated than the staff at an assisted living facility. Skilled nursing facilities have staff authorized to provide and administer medications according to prescriptions. Assisted living facility staff are not usually authorized to administer medications.

A personal visit to several facilities is the best way to

form an accurate opinion of the level of care they provide. Reputable facilities will be happy to schedule interviews with their directors, followed by tours of the buildings’ living areas and grounds. Any facility that does not want to allow a full tour or a meeting with the director and staff should be immediately crossed off your list of potentials.

Note the sights, sounds and smells you encounter on your tour. Cleanliness, cheerful décor and residents who seem happy and neatly dressed are indicators of a quality facility.

Talking to the family members of current residents can give you a good assessment of what may become your loved one’s new home. Family members are likely to provide the most unbiased and unvarnished opinion of the staff and quality of life in the facility.

High-quality skilled nursing facilities usually carry a significant price tag. They provide a much higher level of care and therefore cost more. Consult an attorney who specializes in nursing facility cases for advice regarding your expectations of costs and quality of care.

The decision to place your loved one in a particular facility is not cast in stone. If your family member is not receiving adequate care or shows signs of abuse, you have the right to remove him or her to a better facility. Visit your loved one frequently to monitor his or her health and well-being. Staffing and other issues soon become apparent, especially if you visit at different times of the day.

Take all the time you need when researching skilled nursing facilities. The health and happiness of a loved one is at stake and you can never be too choosy.

Placing a loved one in skilled nursing is a difficult and emotion-laden step. Finding the best one you can afford is the best thing you can do.

How to choose a Skilled Nursing Facility for Your Loved One Memory loss has long been seen as a turning point

in the care of elderly or infirm patients, and it can be a frightening experience for both the patient and his or her caregivers. With new options in care services, it doesn’t have to be.

These days, people with Alzheimer’s or one of the many other forms of dementia can get specialized medical care. Today’s standard of care can minimize the impact that memory loss can have on an individual’s daily life.

Labeled as memory care centers, these facilities differ from nursing homes and traditional assisted living centers in many important ways.

Memory care centers employ staff who are trained and experienced in caring for those suffering with dementia. Activities and rehabilitative therapies are designed to keep residents as independent as possible for as long as possible.

STAFFIf you’re looking for a memory care center for a loved

one, one of the most important things to consider is the experience level and attitude of the staff members. A memory care center should provide continuing employee training to assure that staff members are up to date with the latest in memory loss research and care.

Never place a loved one into a memory care center without first touring the facility. Take note of the general atmosphere of the center – it should be calm and relaxing, not hectic and disorganized.

Consistency and routine are important to those suffering from memory loss. Look for a center with a low turnover rate among employees, and one that doesn’t rely too heavily on part-time workers.

Ascertain the ratio of staff to residents and the qualifications of medical staff employed by the center.

Your loved one should receive personalized care and attention. You want to make sure the center employs enough workers to provide the care your loved one needs.

SECURE, COmFORTABLE SETTINGA memory care center should not look like a sterile

hospital, but more like a comfortable and inviting home.Take notes during your tour. Write down any specifics

you notice about the common areas and the individual rooms. Ask about the activities offered, how visits are handled and the types of therapies available.

The centers you are considering should be clean and sanitary without seeming sterile. A center’s cleanliness is a good indication of the level of dedication and pride in the medical and support staff.

Because Alzheimer’s patients can wander and forget where they are, it’s important to know what security features the center uses to protect its residents.

Make note of your general impressions of each center you visit.

SUPPORTFind out what support services are offered by the

center for both residents and families.Dementia is a wide-ranging ailment with symptoms

from mild to extreme. Be sure that the memory center you choose is equipped to deal with your loved one, no matter what stage of dementia they are in, now or in the future.

If it is important to you, look for a center that offers support groups for caregivers and family members as well as the resident.

You should be comfortable with the memory care center you choose. The decision you make should fit the needs of your loved one and the family. A good memory care center will help make the most of every day for those suffering from memory loss.

How to choose a Memory Care Center

As their health begins to decline, many seniors must confront the difficult and painful matter of determining whether to remain in their homes alone or to move to an environment more specifically designed for the needs of seniors.

Elderly individuals battling mobility issues may find nursing homes to be the best choice. It is important to realize, though, that nursing homes are not the only option available to those needing a little extra help with routine functions.

Though it is certainly true that nursing home staffers are always on hand to help seniors with their daily needs, the atmosphere may not feel personal enough for some. This can make the shift away from independent living at home much harder for seniors.

Some also fear the loss of privacy and personal in nursing home living.

An alternative for seniors who find routine tasks such as cooking and washing to be increasingly difficult is that of an assisted living facility.

Assisted living facilities offer seniors the help they need with certain types of tasks, but also afford them the privacy and a sense of independence that makes this type of transition easier. Even though such environments offer residents a great opportunity to continue their lifestyles in large part, such facilities still do not provide the comfort and ease of living at home.

Senior citizens whose physical or other limitations prevent them from completing everyday tasks have an alternative that permits them to remain in their own homes: Adult care services can give seniors the help they need in comfortable, familiar surroundings.

Generally, adult care services employ people who make scheduled visits to a senior’s home to help with

basic chores and laundry, assist with minor medical needs, run errands and grocery shop. The variety of services they provide allows elderly people to remain in their own homes.

From meal preparation to assistance with dressing and personal hygiene, adult care service providers believe no task too large or too small. The main reason for the popularity of in-home adult care, however, is that it allows a senior to wake up each day in a familiar surroundings, and continue to enjoy the place he or she has always called home.

The clinical, impersonal nature of nursing homes and other on-site living facilities is a difficult adjustment for many people. The aging process brings with it enough difficulties in the form of health concerns and physical limitations, without the additional stress a radical change in lifestyle can introduce.

The simple fact of remaining in familiar rooms full of beloved personal belongings can help ward off depression and offer a sense of comfort.

Another benefit, apart from the assistance in daily tasks, is that adult care services offer a feeling of friendship and companionship that might otherwise be unavailable. A senior who is able to rely on someone coming to his or her home to do chores has the comfort of knowing there will be regular contact with someone he or she can trust.

The first step for family members is to consult with the senior who is contemplating an assistance arrangement of any type.

Deciding whether to stay in one’s home or move into a senior facility of one type or another is always difficult. However, the range of options available should make it easier for any senior to enjoy the comforts of home for as long as possible.

Options to Help Seniors Stay in Their Homes Elderly people sometimes require more care than they once

did in order to live independently in their own homes. This is also true for younger people facing debilitating disease or disability.

Previously, the only option for those needing long-term care was moving into a nursing home. This option can be both expensive and traumatic for people who are forced to uproot their lives. While many nursing homes offer compassionate care, the move can be an unpleasant one, forcing the patient to leave their familiar surroundings and belongings.

In-home care has given people a new option and is becoming increasingly popular. For those in need of regular attention who do not want to move out of their homes, in-home care offers the perfect compromise. Rather than traveling back and forth to a medical facility, professionals can travel to the home of the patient.

Not only is it a convenient and comfortable option, it is normally less expensive than the care offered at a full-time medical facility.

With the rising popularity of in-home care, many cities have several different providers located within their borders. Companies often specialize in different services ranging from housekeeping and errand running to daily medical assistance.

With all of the options available to you, speaking to your loved one’s primary care physician can help you narrow down your choices.

Advice from a doctor can not only help you select an in-home care provider but help you gauge the level of care that your loved one requires. Your loved one’s physician should be able to steer you toward a provider that can offer the proper level of assistance for your family member.

By speaking to several different in-home care providers, you can compare the types of services they offer. These services typically fall into three categories:

PERSONAL CARE Personal care providers can help with daily grooming needs,

moving around the home and any special diet requirements. The care giver can help prepare meals or run simple errands.

COmPANIONSHIPThose who are homebound are often lacking companionship.

A good in-home care professional can provide friendship as well as general care. Whether it’s reading aloud to your loved one or playing a game of cards, an in-home care provider can give your loved one mental stimulation so often lacking in those that are unable to leave the house.

mEDICAL CAREIt is important to know the exact level of medical care you or

your loved one will require. Providers vary greatly in this area with some being able to give 24-hour care and others only able to perform simple tasks like reminding patients to take their medication.

Be sure you are very clear on the medical qualifications of any in-home care providers you are considering. Make note of any training, degrees and certificates that are held by the providers. A physician can help you know what qualifications you should be looking for in your situation.

Know the services you will be paying for. You do not want to pay for services that are not required. You also want to be sure that the company offers the services you need. If you only require simple tasks to be performed around the house, you should not have to pay for medical care as well.

Make sure that you select a company you can trust. The people they send will be in and out of your home and ingrained into your life. Get recommendations from other people who have been in a similar situation.

Choosing an in-home care provider is about finding the right mix of services for your needs. By finding the right match, you will experience the benefits of companionship, comfort and cost savings that make in-home care such a popular choice.

It is a good idea to select a hospital before you need one. When illness strikes or you suffer an unexpected injury, it is important to choose the hospital best suited to your specific needs. By checking in advance the services and facilities of the hospitals near you, you will be better able to make an informed decision if the time arrives.

While it is certainly true that most hospitals follow similar practices and procedures in the care of patients, there are facilities that are better able to handle your situation than some of their counterparts.

When it comes time to pick a hospital for treatment, it is necessary to weigh the pros and cons of each one.

As you attempt to determine the best hospital for your needs, physical location is sure to play a large role in your choice. It is easy to see why this is the case, as you will be more inclined to select a facility that is convenient to your home or workplace.

For some, there really is only one adequate hospital in their area, and choosing a different, more distant location would require additional travel time and effort that may simply be unnecessary.

While it is common for people to choose hospitals that are physically close to home so that friends and family can easily visit, other factors may point to a different decision. If there are alternative facilities that are farther away but offer more specialized service, it may be wise to keep them in mind as you deliberate.

Another common factor influencing hospital choice is whether your chosen physician has privileges at a particular facility. Doctors frequently send patients to certain hospitals simply because they are familiar with the site, have admitting privileges and are able to efficiently function there.

Typically, insurance carriers pay the cost of services from a preferred provider, including hospitals. However, your out-of-pocket costs will be higher if you select a hospital that is outside of your insurer's preferred provider network.

The high price of surgical procedures and necessary nursing services can lead to a very substantial final bill. Therefore, whether or not your insurance will cover most of the expense will likely play a significant role in which hospital you choose.

If your choice of hospital is not based on location or insurance

coverage, consider other features a hospital may have to offer. Many hospitals offer accreditation with the Joint Commission, an organization that implements specific standards of care within medical facilities.

If the Joint Commission accredits a hospital, you can feel confident that the facility maintains high levels of quality in areas ranging from nursing care practice to storage and organization.

Hospitals that are accredited by the Joint Commission are subject to frequent performance evaluations, and applicable standards are continuously reviewed for possible improvement.

Consider hospitals that have won awards or have received certification in areas of quality and consistency of care. The Magnet program offers recognition for excellence in nursing care and other aspects of hospital work. Such distinctions are a great thing to look for when searching for the best hospital for your needs.

Not all hospitals are Magnet certified. The award is given to select few facilities across the country. If you have an option of choosing a hospital that has Magnet recognition, you can have confidence that it will provide you with truly excellent care.

Depending on what procedure you need to have performed, choosing a hospital that specializes in particular areas of surgery or medical care may be necessary.

Many hospitals care for every type of patient that comes through its doors but also have several areas in which they specialize. For example, two hospitals in the same city may offer care, but one specializes in gastroenterology, while another has an advanced cardiac unit.

The hospitals may even transfer patients between locations to ensure the highest level of care. Depending on the needs of the patient, and the particular illness or injury involved, the hospital with a relevant specialty unit may be the obvious choice.

Choosing a high quality hospital is essential in order to achieve the best outcome during instances of illness or injury. Hospitals offer a wide range of care and service types, and it is important to analyze a series of considerations before you decide.

Determining which types of care and treatment are offered at different facilities, and carefully balancing your personal priorities are the best ways to make a wise choice when selecting the hospital that is best for you.

How to Select the Best Hospital

Do you remember the smell of freshly baked bread? There is nothing like the aroma of cookies or pies coming out of the oven.

For people who love baked goods, finding the best bakery is a priority. Whether you are planning a special event or looking for a simple treat, high-quality baked goods are perfect for any occasion. There are times when store-bought goodies just aren't good enough.

The hardest part of finding a bakery is deciding what you want to order. You have the option of buying muffins, delicious bread, cinnamon sticks or danish. Many bakeries around the country now offer low carbohydrates, gluten-free or low fat products for people on special diets.

While many bakeries have a specialty, there are some things that all great bakeries share.

HIGH-QUALITY INGREDIENTSAn awesome bakery uses highquality products that are

sourced from around the world.Imagine fudge made with pure Belgian chocolate, or

cannoli filled with the finest rocotta cheese filling. Top bakeries combine the best ingredients in ways no one else can.

ATmOSPHEREWhen you visit a great bakery, the staff should greet you

promptly. It should have an upbeat atmosphere. Ideally, the employees are there because they want to be.

The best bakeries smell like wonderful memories of childhood. They might even give you free nibbles to encourage you to buy their newest product.

CONSISTENCYThe bakery should take great pride in the products they

create. It should be the same day-after-day. There should be no need to worry about who is working, as the food is consistent regardless of who is making it.

They should create your baked goods with top-notch ingredients, combined in the same way each day.

SPECIALTIESSome bakeries have specialty products that are unique to

them. Whether you are looking for pizza strips or fresh-made spinach pies, there is a bakery that will suit your every desire.

Many bakeries use family recipes to make their own zeppole cream or old fashioned pizza with plum tomato & garlic. Whatever you need, you will find a bakery that is just right for you.

BUDGETYou will find bakeries that fit in all budgets. The absolute

best products will cost more since the supplies are expensive, but bakeries strive very hard to accommodate all spending levels.

Make your purchases depending on what you can afford. There is no need to be embarrassed.

If you are purchasing food for a special occasion, look for a bakery that delivers consistent results. Ask your friends and family for referrals. Also, consider visiting culinary websites to read the latest reviews and advertisements. Many times, these sites have tips for people looking for the best shops. They might also give you ideas about market trends. Finally, check customer reviews of bakeries. Websites such as Yelp! have plenty to say about bakeries and other businesses.

Obesity is a growing problem in the United States. For many Americans, it is not only a cosmetic issue. It is also a threat to their health.

Losing weight can be a challenge. The process requires dedication. Temptations are everywhere.

When you need help dieting, a weight loss clinic may be the answer. Trained professionals can help you set a realistic weight goal, educate you on good nutrition and keep you motivated. They can also provide accountability.

There are dozens of options available. Each weight loss clinic has its own approach. Selecting the right clinic will help you reach your weight loss goals.

Many diet programs create glamorous advertisements using famous people. But that doesn’t mean the program is the best one for you. Here are some tips to help you find the best plan for you.

RESEARCH AND VISITStart by researching weight loss clinics in your area. View

their websites. It will give you an idea of what each clinic of-fers and their pricing options. Do you have to purchase special food? Do you have to go to meetings or keep appointments? Find out whether you are going to need to buy prepackaged meals as well as follow a good stringent diet regime. Make sure these commitments are convenient for your schedule. Think about other information you may need. Many clinics provide online courses, and some provide face-to-face get-togethers and weigh-ins.

Narrow down your choices and visit each clinic. If you have questions, bring a notebook to jot down information. Observe the way personnel deals with clients. The staff should also be knowledgeable and competent. They should be enthusiastic and professional with everyone, not just potential or new cus-tomers.

PLANS AND REFERRALSEach clinic will look as though they have a great plan. Read-

ing what others say about their plan will help you determine if it is the best plan for you.

It is always beneficial to know what others have experienced. Always remember, however, that what is effective for one per-son may not necessarily benefit someone else. Keep your per-sonal requirements in mind at all times.

You can ask the clinic staff for referrals. Also, it should be possible to speak with existing customers about their experi-ences. A clinic with a good reputation won’t have any issue with referrals. Previous as well as existing clients are often willing to talk about their own experiences, negative and positive.

A good weight loss clinic will have a follow-up system to as-sist you in maintaining a healthy and balanced way of life.

Before committing to a clinic, become familiar with the differ-ent plans they offer. Find out what support they offer, such as motivation as well as nutritional assistance.

Do not register with anyone until you can check them out with the Better Business Bureau and online reviewers.

If possible, ask for a trial membership. Many weight loss clin-ics will allow trial periods. This offers you an opportunity to try the system prior to committing to a complete membership.

Use your time at the clinic to create good nutrition and exer-cise habits. After you have attained your health goals, you will need to continue these habits to maintain your weight and fit-ness levels.

All in all, utilizing the services of a good weight loss clinic can go a long way to helping you succeed. It is easier to adhere to a plan when you have the assistance of knowledgeable and encouraging people who can help you accomplish your weight loss goals.

How to Choose a GoodWeight Loss Clinic Everyone knows smoking is bad for your health. It

can potentially cause cancer. People addicted to tobacco products end up spending a small fortune each year to feed their habit.

Quitting tobacco products is not easy, but it can be done. Thousands of people stop smoking each year. They lead healthier lives, with more self-confidence. Former smokers have a sense of accomplishment that comes from self-discipline.

If you are thinking about quitting, that’s a good first step. Some people quit “cold turkey” -- simply dropping their cigarettes and never picking them up again -- but that’s rare.

The truth is that quitting a tobacco addiction is usually very difficult. There’s not a single method that works for every smoker. Different people respond in different ways to various treatments, so it’s important to keep your options open until you find the right fit that works for you.

CLINICSConsider choosing a specialized clinic where there are

experts who can help you stop smoking.Different clinics offer various options and emphasize

different paths toward quitting tobacco. Some might specialize in certain medical treatments, while others may put more focus on support groups or even holistic, natural methods to kick the habit.

Before you sign up for a stop-smoking clinic, ask about their services and prices. You’ll also want to inquire whether the staff has medical licenses, counselor training or other specialized credentials. Rates can vary dramatically depending on which clinic you choose and what services are offered.

Also check with your health insurance provider to see if they cover clinics for people who want to quit smoking.

mEDICAL HELPYour personal physician is another reliable resource.

Any family doctor should be able to give you information to help you stop smoking. They have intense medical training and years of experience. Doctors must also stay updated with changing trends and technologies in their field.

Your doctor may suggest a prescription treatment. Nicotine replacement options include lozenges, patches, gum and nosal spray. There are also some drugs approved to help people stop smoking, including Chantix and Zyban.

Talk with your doctor to find out which treatment would work best in your situation.

COmmUNITIESFinally, many people get strong results from support

groups and stop-smoking communities. Finding people who are going through the same struggles as yourself can be a powerful motivator to quitting for good. Not every smoker can quit on the first try. A community can help you walk the long and winding path toward becoming a former smoker.

Look for a support group that’s convenient for you. Find one near your home that meets at an opportune time, hopefully in a place where you can feel comfortable.

Hospitals, doctors, employers and churches will often have information on various groups in your area that can help you stop smoking. Some focus on all types of addiction, but the best ones for smokers will focus on tobacco specifically.

By looking at all these options — support groups, medical treatments and specialized clinics — you’re sure to find a method that will help you transition to a permanent smoke-free life.

Having professional photographs taken is a wonderful way to remember a special event. Whether it is a wedding, a special birthday or an anniversary, having professional photographs will help keep the memories alive.

STYLES OF PHOTOGRAPHERSProfessional photographers each have their own personal

styles. That said, all photographers tend to use one of three basic styles in their work.

The first style is journalistic. These photographers record what happens. They do not try to stage any photos.

The second style is formal, sometimes known as traditional. These photographers take mostly posed photographs.

Some photographers use a combination of the two.

RESEARCH PHOTOGRAPHERSThe first step in finding a photographer is to look on the

Internet to find photographers who work in your area. It is also important to find a photographer who covers the type of event you are having.

On his or her website, the professional photographer will showcase their best work. Remember that almost anyone can get a great shot once in a while, so you should look at a wide range of images to get a good idea of their capability and taste as a visual artist.

Follow them on Facebook. Today, most professional photographers have Facebook accounts where they post their most current work. This will give you a better feeling of their total work than their website where they post their very best shots.

Once you have the list narrowed down to two or three, call them and see if they will be available when you need them. The best photographers book very early, so it is important to work as far ahead as possible.

Ask friends, relatives and co-workers about photographers they have used, especially if they show you photos of themselves that you like.

INTERVIEw PHOTOGRAPHERSOnce you have two or three photographers who are available

on your date, set up personal interviews with each of them.Explore the photographer’s background and look at a

complete portfolio for an event the photographer has shot. Ask the photographer if he has ever worked with other vendors you have hired or are considering.

You should also find out his or her plans for the shoot. Find out if the photographer has ever worked at that location before. Find out whether the photographer who owns the studio, or an employee, will be shooting your event.

If there are particular shots you like, make sure your photographer knows that. A great idea is to look through magazines and pick out shots to show the photographer to see if he or she can replicate the look and feel.

Ask if you will get printed proofs or if they will be available for you and anyone else interested in buying them to see on the Internet.

A good professional photographer will be able to bring out the best in the subject and capture the moment to preserve it forever. You will be offered several options concerning poses, prints, sizes, backgrounds and other elements that will affect your decision in choosing the right photographer.

Make sure you go over the contract thoroughly before hiring anyone for the job. Any photographer should be willing to give you a contract.

Expect to have to pay a deposit to hold your date. Also understand when other payments will be due. Many photographers will expect another payment when they show up to photograph your event.

It often comes down to an individual feeling. Just make sure and trust your gut early before someone else gets your time slot.

And make sure you read and understand the contract before you sign anything.

How to Choose a PhotographerPropane can be a great option for home heating and

cooking, and has traditionally been popular in rural areas unreached by natural gas lines. But it’s only as reliable as the supplier you use. Take the time on a sunny day to find a propane company that sells fuel at a reasonable price and also provides service and repairs. On a cold night, you’ll be glad you did.

Use these guidelines when selecting your propane provider:

RELIABILITYEstablish a good relationship with your supplier – especially

if you heat your entire home with propane. If you are a regular customer and you run out of fuel unexpectedly, a friend in the business will come to your rescue.

The best propane companies employ salespeople who will treat you with respect and who will consider your fuel needs as well as your budget. Buy tanks from a reputable company that sells high-quality products, one that services what it sells.

If you have a propane-fueled barbecue grill, take your empty tanks to an authorized propane dealer for the best service and value for your money. Exchanging your empty tank at a convenience store or big-box retailer isn’t always the best deal. Their tanks aren’t always completely filled, yet you pay full price. And you don’t want to run out of propane when your steaks are half-cooked.

PRICEPay a little more and buy the best quality tank you can

afford. It will last years longer than a cheaper one, costing less over the long run.

High-quality tanks not only last longer but are also safer. They’re made with heavier metal so they’re less likely to develop dangerous leaks, and their valves and hoses are built to last.

A reputable dealer will replace a faulty tank without question. At the same time, ask about ways to save money

on propane itself. You may get a price break for setting up a regular delivery schedule with your supplier. And you may be able to lock in a set price for a year or more, avoiding market price fluctuations.

PROPER STANDARDSBe sure your propane company is in compliance with

government requirements and standards. Pay the office a visit and look around for certificates and licenses that should be displayed prominently.

If you don’t see them posted, ask to see them. Similarly, you may want to ask your salesperson about his or her government-mandated licensing and certification for your state.

If it seems uncomfortable to ask for all this documentation, remember that you’re protecting your family, your life and your property by thoroughly checking out your propane supplier.

BACkGROUNDCheck out your propane company’s safety and customer

service record. Propane suppliers often fall within the oversight of state public service commissions.

The Better Business Bureau is the best source for information on customer service complaints. Avoid a company with too many safety infractions and too many disgruntled former customers, but don’t discount one that has responded to complaints and resolved customer service issues.

Friends, neighbors and relatives may be a good source of information on reliable propane dealers in your area. Ask them who they deal with for heating their homes and keeping their barbecue grills in action.

Most propane dealers are highly reputable, honest and safety-conscious. Do a little homework before you need the services of one and work to establish a long-term relationship. Having a friend in the business is a very good thing on a cold winter’s night.

Heating and air conditioning are a modern luxury many people take for granted. You adjust the thermostat and settle in comfortably. That is, until your HVAC system fails, leaving you sweltering in the summer or freezing in the winter.

Prevent equipment failure and prolong the life of your HVAC system by hiring a quality professional to service and maintain it.

Look for a contractor you will be comfortable using for years to come. The best HVAC contractors are helpful and reliable, but a bad one can cost you a lot of money, cause you frequent headaches and put you in uncomfortable situations.

Recommendations and referrals from past and present customers are your first line of defense. Ask neighbors, relatives and friends who they recommend.

Once you’ve developed a short list of likely candidates, check out their reputations with the Better Business Bureau, your state’s board of contractors or builders’ association and perhaps your town’s building inspection office. Avoid companies that have a long list of complaints lodged against them.

After you’ve eliminated the potential problem HVAC shops, call the remaining ones to ask about pricing, guarantees and warranties, their average time to complete a job and the manufacturers’ brands they use.

Your HVAC company should also service what it sells. Find out if you need to buy a separate service contract or if routine maintenance and repairs are included in the price of the new installation. It’s very important to know if they provide around-the-clock emergency service.

Make sure a company is fully licensed, bonded and insured. You may think this is being overly inquisitive, but it’s in your best interest. If a worker is injured or causes any damage on your property, you’ll want his employer’s insurance to cover it. Otherwise, you may have to file a claim on your homeowner’s insurance, which could result in increased premiums.

Reputable HVAC companies will usually belong to recognized professional and trade organizations. Some well-known organizations include the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration Institute, and the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning Engineers. Membership in one of these organizations is not automatic. Applicants are required to have certain certifications, meet professional standards and meet or exceed other requirements before they are admitted.

Before your HVAC company starts a project, check to insure that all the required building permits are in place. Many of the better companies will file the permits for you at the local building codes office. Don’t take this for granted. Check with the permitting office first, because any work performed without the proper permits could become a major headache for you.

Have a load calculation done before installing a new system in any building. The company you hire should do this. The best ones don’t cut corners by using a general rule of thumb for sizing equipment rather than doing a thorough calculation. Don’t assume that a load calculation was done before the old system was installed. Buildings can change shape slightly over time due to foundations settling and cracks widening, affecting the efficiency of any equipment.

The HVAC company shouldn’t automatically replace the old unit with a new one of the same size. If your old unit didn’t heat or cool your home adequately, you will want to install a new one that does. And a system that's too big will be inefficient.

Talk with your HVAC installer to determine the right size and model that will best get the job done.

Follow up by having your HVAC contractor check over the system yearly to make sure it’s running at peak efficiency.

With these guidelines, you can select a quality HVAC business you can rely on for years.

How to Choose anHVAC CompanyRepairing or replacing your roof is best left to

professional contractors. Keep in mind that, when hiring a contractor, you are not just paying for parts and labor; you are also paying for the warranty that comes with the roof.

If you have any problems with your roof in the future, your contractor is still liable and must fix the problem.

Your search for a reputable roofer can begin in the local classifieds and the yellow pages of the phone book.

The Internet is also a great source for finding roofing contractors in your area. You can find websites that list contractors, along with reviews of their work.

Ask your family, friends and neighbors if they have any recommendations. Even if they don’t have any suggestions, they may know others who have recently used a roofer. They may be able to tell you whom you should consider using, along with whom not to use.

Personal recommendations provide the best information. They usually include commentary on the quality of the work and the cleanup process. For example, if someone does a good job on your roof, but leaves shingles and debris in your yard, you likely don’t want to hire them.

Some contractors follow natural disasters or heavy storms across the country in the hope of finding jobs and making money from insurance claims. However, if you hire one of these contractors to repair your roof and it begins to leak again, it is unlikely they will return to your area to repair it.

Instead of hiring a traveling roofer, it is better to find a roofing contractor who is local. This is especially true if you live in an area prone to high winds and natural disasters such as hurricanes. Remember that you are not only paying for the roof, but are also paying for a warranty, so you need a local roofing contractor who will be available for repairs.

Once you have several options, it is time to look into each roofing contractor. You can start by finding out how long their company has been in business. A good roofer should offer a guarantee of anywhere from five to 12 years. If the company you are considering has been in business for only a few years, you have no way of knowing if their guarantee is worth anything.

Next, contact various roofers to get estimates and ask questions. It is just as important to ask questions as it is to obtain an estimate, as doing so will show contractors that, instead of taking a hands-off approach, you are interested and involved in the process.

Some good questions to ask include whether the roofers recommend standard or architectural shingles, what they will do if they find damaged decking, how long it will take to complete the work and when they are available to start. It is also crucial to find out what the warranty is on their work and whether they will provide it in writing.

You should also make sure that the roofer is licensed and bonded. Insurance is especially important for contractors, since they should be able to cover any damages they may cause to your property. It is also vital that their workers are covered under insurance as well in case someone is injured while working on your roof.

Finally, be sure you receive a written contract from the roofer you choose. Contracts should always be in writing to ensure that there are no misunderstandings about the type of materials to be used, what the work will entail and what the final cost will be.

By following these steps, you are sure to find the best roofing contractor in your area. Not only will you get good work for your money, but you can also be confident that you made the right choice.

When looking for an appliance store, you want one with great customer service and high-quality products. But while the right appliances can simplify your life, spending too much money can put a serious dent in your budget. You want to strike the right balance.

LOOk ONLINEHow do you know what to look for in a quality

appliance store? The first step is to search the Internet. Product and business review sites are great

for reading customer reviews. Do take customer complaints with a grain of salt, though; lots of people are hard to please, and they are more likely to leave comments than are those who are happy with the products and service they received.

Two of the best sites to look at are Consumer Reports (www.consumerreports.org) and the Better Business Bureau (www.BBB.org). Both offer reviews of stores and products. To be listed on the Better Business Bureau site, stores must be both reliable and reputable, as judged by the BBB.

Many stores have sections of their own websites dedicated to customer comments and reviews of both the store and the various products they sell.

LOOk FOR ADSBefore you set your mind on one store, be sure to

check out weekly advertisements, either in your mail, the local newspaper or online. Some stores lower the cost of certain products while raising those of others so that, in the end, the store isn’t losing money.

Some appliance stores use price-matching. Not all

stores advertise that they price-match so be sure to ask. If you find a lower advertised price on the same model elsewhere, many reputable stores will sell you the appliance for the price you’ve found.

Conducting research on the appliances you need as well as the store will ensure that you get the best bang for your buck. Not all appliances are created equal; you want to make sure that the stove you buy will actually work the first time you try to bake a cake.

STORE POLICIESEvaluate the store’s policies on warranties and

repairs. Many appliances come with a one-year manufacturer’s warranty, which negates the need to buy an additional warranty from the store.

Many people don’t understand the sale price cycle of appliances. Washers and dryers typically go on sale in the winter, refrigerators in the spring and stoves and ovens in the fall. If you don’t need to purchase everything at once, shop seasonally for your appliances.

Be prepared to haggle for a better price. Salespeople are typically prepared for a bit of bartering. If you are too shy to haggle, ask the store to throw in the extended warranty or delivery and set-up for free.

It never hurts to ask.Compare different stores you find using a checklist:

delivery window, warranty options, repair services, price points and range of products offered. You’ll want someone you can buy your appliances from in confidence.

Daydreaming about an escape to an exotic location? Planning a destination wedding. honeymoon or family reunion? Then it is time to work with a travel agent.

Travel is their job, which means knowing its ins and outs is their everyday life. Planning a trip is stressful. There are so many options and details to worry about – travel agents are experts in helping travelers get where they need to go and help create possibilities most people never would have dreamed were possible.

Honeymoons are special, agents can help make your dreams come true and work with you to plan that very special trip. Destination weddings need an agent who is detailed, willing to work with not only the bride and groom-to-be, but all of the guests expected to attend the wedding. The details of multiple gateways, number of nights at the destination, number of people in each room, negotiating prices, and making sure that all details are taken care of and should be done with a local agent you can talk to, who has references, who you will be happy to work with for many months planning your perfect destination wedding.

Choosing a local agent versus an on-line agency gives you that “personal touch” to your travel planning experience – offering help and advice that a website cannot provide. Agents work with suppliers who can handle every aspect of your trip and are there to act on your behalf if

you should have any problems during your trip. Should a problem arise during your trip or if you need assistance after you return, a local agent is certainly easier to contact than an internet agency and will be happy to help you with insurance claims. Agents work for their clients, not for a resort or airline. It makes sense that a happy customer will be a repeat customer.

Many agents are considered experts in the area you are traveling to and have probably been to your destination, hotel or cruised on that ship you are interested in. Agents attend all sorts of educational seminars, classes, along with personal visit to the properties on inspection trips to prepare themselves for your travel requests. Many agents are part of an office group that between them, have traveled the world and are happy to share that knowledge with the agent working on your trip.

There are some things technology cannot replicate, and personal touch is one of them.

The internet is a valuable resource, but it cannot replace the expertise, guidance and personal service of a travel agent. Agents can also offer insider tips, generally based on their personal experiences.

Exploring the world can be an amazing experience. Agents can help you save time and money. Working with a top-notch agent will help you experience that dream vacation.

Whether you are buying or selling a house, working with the right real estate agent can save you time, effort, and money.

On the other hand, choosing an agent who doesn't keep your best interests at heart can cost you a lot of time and money -- and headaches, too.

Take the time to find a real estate agent who is perfect for you and your needs.

How do you select a good agent? Here are a few tips to keep in mind.

REAL ESTATE AGENT VS. REALTORWhat's the difference between a real estate agent and a Realtor?

A real estate agent may or may not be a Realtor, but every Realtor is required to be a licensed real estate agent.

To become a Realtor, a real estate agent has to join the National Association of Realtors (NAR); this allows him or her to attend industry meetings, get NAR newsletters, and access software and educational tools.

Choosing a Realtor gives you the peace of mind of working with someone who has been trained well, who has solid knowledge of the real estate business, and who is bound by a strict code of ethics.

wHERE TO START LOOkINGOne of the best ways to find a good real estate agent or Realtor

is through word of mouth. Ask around to see if any family, friends or co-workers recommend someone. Keep in mind that an agent who is good with buying homes may not be as good for selling home, so be sure to pick someone who is skilled at what you need.

If you haven't gathered any suggestions, try contacting local brokers. With any luck, they may be able to connect you with a real estate agent in their office. Or, search the NAR directory online. Whatever route you choose, make sure you find a legitimate agent.

COmFORT LEVELWhen you conduct initial interviews with prospective real estate

agents, pay close attention to how you feel while interacting with them.

Are they genuinely concerned about your needs? That is, are

they more interested in your wants and needs than in their own paycheck? Are they knowledgeable about the current housing market? Do they have the ability to negotiate a contract?

Overall, how comfortable do you feel with each agent? Are you confident that the agent will work toward your benefit and help you secure a good deal? Do you trust the agent behave ethically and to fulfill his/her end of the commitment?

COmmUNICATION AND PLANNINGLook for a real estate agent who communicates effectively,

both with you and with the other party for negotiations. If you are selling your home, your agent should develop an effective marketing plan, explain it to you, and respond promptly and thoroughly to any questions or concerns you have.

Marketing your home will likely involve placing advertisements such as listing your home on the Multiple Listing Service (MLS) for Realtors and conducting open houses to invite the public to view your home. Make sure you select a real estate agent you can get in touch with easily; after all, the best marketing plan in the world will need your cooperation.

mORE RESOURCESTo better equip yourself in buying or selling a home, do some

research for yourself. Real estate magazines may contain good information and can be a great way to start the search for your next home.

There are also a lot of good resources on the Internet, such as www.Realtor.com, which is associated with NAR and which contains free, useful information.

You'll find housing statistics, housing market forecasts, buying and selling tips, and more. And of course, nothing beats the power of networking -- finding people with similar or related interests, strengths, or skills who can help you in your endeavor.

After you've selected a real estate agent and successfully bought or sold your home, make sure to keep his/her contact information on hand.

You may want to refer other people to him or her, and you never know when you may need their services again.

How to Choose a Real Estate Agent

Finding the home of your dreams can be time-consuming, but once you’ve found it, most buyers are eager to close the deal as quickly as possible. But you should remain patient as you begin to arrange for financing. The key is to take as much time as necessary to do things properly and select the best mortgage lender for your needs.

Loan professionals have the potential to make buying a home easy. When you work with a lender who is dedicated to providing great service, the process is likely to go smoothly. But if your lender appears to be focused primarily on securing large commissions or pushes loan products that you're not interested in, exercise caution.

Mortgage professionals should be extremely knowledgeable about a wide variety of loan products and should be willing to spend as much time as necessary to explain them. Solid lenders are eager to answer buyers' questions and take pride in guiding them through what can be a confusing process.

The best mortgage professionals keep the borrower's best interests and financial priorities in mind.

Do some advance research on loan options to measure whether you are dealing with an honest mortgage professional. Knowing a bit about loan products before you sit down with a lender can help you determine whether he or she is truly concerned about your needs.

Having at least some knowledge about the financing process will allow you to make a sound assessment of the mortgage professional's motivation and decide whether he or she is a good fit.

PURCHASER'S RIGHTSDealing with mounds of forms, declarations, and financial

terminology can be dizzying to the inexperienced homebuyer. However intimidating the process may feel, you should exercise care in making sure you understand everything you are signing and the obligations you are assuming.

A signature cannot be erased, and buyers may only have a short time — or no time at all — in which they can back out.

Even if done within the permissible period, a purchaser still will

likely forfeit any deposit paid if he does not follow through with the deal, and he may also owe an additional amount based on the amount of the initial mortgage payment. This can be avoided simply by exercising sufficient care when signing all agreements.

If a mortgage lender is rushing through the paperwork and pressuring you to quickly execute the forms, he is not doing his job properly. In such a case, the purchaser's best interests are being neglected, and the likelihood of a misunderstanding grows.

COmmUNICATE wITH YOUR LENDERExperienced mortgage lenders take the time to gain a thorough

understanding of a purchaser's long-range financial goals.A good lender will want to know how long the buyer intends to

remain in his or her new home. This type of knowledge helps him suggest the mortgage products that best suit the borrower's needs. It is a red flag if a lender fails to ask this kind of question.

SEEk LOCAL LENDERSFinding a mortgage lender in your area is usually best. Because

interest rates can change on a daily basis, a local lender is better able to remain attuned to rapid changes in the local housing market and will always know how such changes may affect his or her clients.

A local lender also allows for closer monitoring of your loan application as he will be more readily accessible to answer any questions you may have.

TAkE ADVANTAGE OF PERSONAL REFERRALSFeel free to ask family members and friends about their

experiences with mortgage lenders, and if they are comfortable recommending the professionals they used for their home loans.

Word-of-mouth recommendations offer a great way to identify the very best professionals in your area. Once you receive a few possible names, take the time to verify their professional backgrounds so that you will feel confident in their ability to provide the sort of quality customer service you desire.

More and more Americans are finding the financial solutions they need close to home, turning to credit unions for savings, checking and borrowing. With recent increases, the nation’s 6,888 credit unions now boast a record-high 93.9 million members.

Credit unions are owned by their members rather than individuals or conglomerates. Because they are typically non-for-profit operations, they can charge less in fees than for-profit banks. And because they’re member-owned, dividends go to the members rather than shareholders.

Belonging to a credit union has never been more beneficial.

They frequently offer better interest rates on savings accounts and competitive rates on student loans, mortgages, auto loans and credit cards. The federal government insures most deposits made into credit union accounts up to $250,000.

Before joining a credit union, research those in your area and their membership requirements. Some credit unions limit their membership to employees of specific companies, or groups of public service or school employees; others extend eligibility to anyone who lives in a specific county or geographic region.

A simple Internet search will provide a list as a starting point. Then you can narrow your possibilities by researching eligibility, the services offered and fees charged at each credit union.

Check current interest rates on checking and savings accounts. If you can’t find the rates online, stop by and ask for a copy of their rates.

Be sure to find out if there are fees associated with the accounts you wish to open. As with traditional

savings and loan banks, you may be required to pay a fee if you fall below a certain minimum balance.

Some credit unions require that you use your debit card a minimum number of times each month. Weigh the interest earned against the fees charged to find the credit union that offers the best benefit.

If you are seeking a certain type of loan, find out whether that type of loan is issued by the credit union you are researching. Once you’ve found several credit unions offering that specific type of loan, compare interest rates and any specials to find the institution that gives you the best deal.

Convenience is also an important consideration. Check for availability of online services, extended weekday hours, whether they’re open on weekends, and where their branches and ATMs are located.

Also be aware of any fees associated with ATM usage. If you plan on making frequent use of the machines, hefty fees can add up quickly.

Some credit unions have agreements with other institutions for shared services. This may mean more access to ATMs and other services when you are away from home. If you travel frequently or have children attending college in other cities, this can be an advantage.

When you have done your research, make a list of the pros and cons of each institution so you can compare them side by side.

Once you have chosen your credit union, get to know the employees and continue to learn about the benefits of membership. With a little bit of homework, you’ll find a credit union can be a friendly place to help meet all your financial needs.

Choosing a Credit UnionEnlist the help of a reputable Realtor and real estate agency

when you buy or sell a home. The agent and agency that you choose can make the difference between selling your house for the asking price or settling for the best offer on the table.

That’s thousands of dollars of your money at stake.Investigate the reputation of an agency before you retain

their services. What do their past clients say about them?Rely on the experience of family and neighbors. Their ad-

vice will help point you in the direction of a reputable agency.Find out how long an agency has been doing business in

the area. One that has been established for a long time is pref-erable, but newer ones may work harder to sell your home, too.

A real estate agency run as a side business from a private home may not be able to devote enough time to showing your home. They’re not necessarily bad but may lack the time and experience to get the results you want.

Phone a few agencies that look as though they might be good choices for you. Ask them a few questions about their listings, related fees and commissions. If an agency seems to place too much emphasis on what they get out of the deal rather on how it will market and sell your home, you probably want to move on to the next business on your list. It should be all about you and your home.

You will be spending most of your time with the real estate agent you choose, but his or her agency can also affect the sale or purchase of your next home. Choose an agency with plenty of local connections, a keen understanding of the neigh-borhoods that interest you and has solid contacts with other realty companies.

This assumes major importance when you’re selling your current house, because the agency usually handles the sale while the Realtor helps you find your new one.

How an agency advertises its listings and how it handles the sales process is what makes it different from other real estate agencies.

This can greatly influence the sale of your home and how much you will be paid for it.

While they look similar at first glance, real estate agencies may have a preference in the kinds of properties they show or sell. Some might be more familiar with commercial properties while others are great at selling high-end homes. You’ll want to do business with one that concentrates on selling homes similar to yours.

Browse the agency's listings beforehand to see if your home meshes well with their existing listings. Examine how the listings themselves are displayed to see if you, as a pro-spective buyer, would find them easy to read yet informative.

Size matters when you’re choosing a real estate agency. While smaller agencies may be able to dedicate more time to the sale of your home, they may not have the networking advantages of larger agencies. A larger agency’s agents have more opportunities to network and sell your home.

On the other hand, you may not get the personalized atten-tion you get with a smaller agency. The difference might nudge you in either direction for the wrong reasons.

There are several questions that you should be prepared to ask when selling a home:

-- What advertising methods will be used to sell my home? Will the agency use the Internet and newspapers?

-- How many pictures of my house will appear online?-- On which sites will my home be displayed?-- Can you see examples of other homes that have recently

been sold in your price range?-- How long have has the agency been selling homes in my

neighborhood?-- What makes your agency different from the others?Buying and selling a home are probably the two biggest fi-

As modern society has become increasingly dependent on personal computers, it has become essential to be able to get a computer fixed quickly and successfully in case something goes wrong. Whether it’s a computer that’s used for work or one that’s for fun and entertainment, a breakdown can ruin your day.

It’s a good idea to find a qualified computer repairman you can trust before you need one. Here are some factors to consider when looking for a computer repair specialist.

TYPE OF COmPUTERIs your computer a desktop or laptop system? Desktop

systems are generally made up of a tower, a monitor, a keyboard and a mouse. Laptops are self-contained in a package that folds up and travels easily.

Desktops and laptops often have different issues, so it's best to consult a technician who specializes in your type of computer.

Ask friends and relatives to recommend a repair specialist, or check with the computer technicians at your workplace. You may find the specialist you’re looking for at a local business machines vendor or at the help desk of an electronics retailer.

ExPERIENCELook for a specialist who has successfully fixed many

computers similar to yours. You don't want them getting on-the-job training on your machine.

Find out how long they’ve worked on computers and how they keep up with new developments. An experienced technician who attends seminars or classes to learn about the latest computer news is likely to be well-equipped to address your computer issue.

TRAINING AND CERTIFICATION

Ask your prospective technician whether he or she has earned any software certifications from Microsoft, or if they

have a degree in a computer-related field. These can be good indicators of self-discipline and career focus in your technician, but they don't guarantee the technician's ability. In the world of computers, experience and skill can carry more weight than a diploma.

PRICEAs with most services, don't automatically go with the vendor

who offers the lowest quote. If something goes wrong during the repair, you may have to eat the additional costs incurred to fix the new problem.

On the other hand, don't assume that the vendor with the highest price offers the best quality or service.

Small shops and individuals frequently offer the best deals because they don't emphasize selling you a bundle of services or software that you don't need.

mAkE A PERSONAL VISITTake a careful look around the computer repair shop where

your potential technician works. When you first enter a computer repair shop, beware of

sales representatives in the front who may try to sell you a new product rather than get something fixed. Make sure you meet the technician who will work on your computer.

As you describe your computer's problem, watch his or her response carefully -- both words and body language. If they seem to know the problem, then odds are that's the case. If they don’t instill confidence, you should probably take your computer elsewhere.

The most important thing is for you to feel comfortable with and confident in your computer repair specialist.

Finding the right combination of experience, customer service and price can be a challenge, but it's worth the extra effort in the long run.

How to Choose aComputer Repair SpecialistInterest in gold has increased sharply in recent

years. People use precious metals to shelter their money in a difficult economy and uncertain future.

With gold at historic highs, a growing number of Americans are rummaging through neglected drawers in search of broken gold jewelry. Selling gold necklaces, rings and other trinkets has become a popular source of quick cash.

Fly-by-night operators are also becoming more common as gold picks up steam. These so-called experts may lack experience in determining the proper value of old watches, jewelry and similar articles, many of them worth far more than their gold content or melt value.

Anyone can make an honest mistake. However, less reputable dealers could offer far less than the melt value of the gold in their items. These dealers count on your lack of knowledge. They may offer you only a small fraction of the true market value of the gold.

Infomercials have flooded the market with come-on ploys offering “immediate cash for your unwanted gold.” Mailing gold items in flimsy prepaid envelopes to these dealers is akin to dropping cash into the mail.

Novice sellers should exercise caution when looking for a gold buyer. While many buyers are honest and reputable, choosing the right one requires research. These tips will help you get the most cash from selling your unwanted gold.

Conduct some research on your own and estimate the gold content of an item. Pure gold is a soft metal. It is alloyed with other metals to increase its hardness and durability.

Jewelry often bears an inscription identifying the purity of its gold content. For example, 24-karat jewelry

contains 99.9 percent gold. Gold is measured in terms of a troy ounce, equal to about 1.097 avoirdupois ounces, the kind of ounce we use in measuring butter, flour and body weight. One troy ounce of 14-karat gold contains 14/24th troy ounce of the pure metal.

Take your gold items to several reputable jewelers in your area for their evaluation. A jeweler may charge a small fee for this service. He will be able to establish the gold content of an otherwise worthless piece of jewelry that lacks markings.

The Better Business Bureau and the Internet are valuable sources of information about gold buyers. Disreputable dealers tend to accumulate a pile of complaints in short order from disgruntled sellers whom they’ve cheated.

Walk right past gold buyers who operate from their homes or businesses unrelated to precious metals. They usually don’t have the experience to give you an accurate evaluation of your items.

Use a business in your community. If you opt to mail potentially valuable items to an unknown buyer, insure your package and use registered mail available from the United States Postal Service. Alternatively, send your package via a shipper that offers package tracking and delivery verification. Avoid trusting the honesty of someone you don’t know and have never met.

Most gold buyers are reputable business people and will pay you for the true value of your unwanted gold. Learn as much as you can before visiting a gold dealer because information is your ally. Above all, use common sense, because even the most levelheaded among us get a little crazy when gold is involved.

Your financial future depends upon appropriate insurance coverage. Shopping for the right insurance agent can sometimes be a challenge. You want to find a company that offers the right combination of service, coverage and an affordable price.

The problem may simply be one of not knowing how to identify reputable, experienced agents. It is vital to keep in mind the fact that everyone needs to have the right type of insurance coverage in place. A seasoned agent can help make that happen for his or her clients.

Prior to choosing your insurance coverage, it is necessary to identify a skilled agent willing to guide you through the process. You should always conduct a thorough study into multiple agents in order to find the best one for your needs.

A great way to start is to ask friends, family members and colleagues that you know and trust for referrals. If you receive a recommendation, there is a strong likelihood that you will have the same type of positive experience as the person providing the referral.

Talented agents know that offering great service is the best way to keep receiving personal recommendations and increase business. If you are satisfied with your agent's work, they would surely appreciate your willingness to refer friends and relatives in the future.

Those who have not had the benefit of a personal recommendation are free to conduct their own research. It may be wise to begin by making inquiries of individual companies and brokers.

Selecting a large insurer offers greater uniformity among agents, as they will have undergone the same types of training and be subject to the same policies. However, they may also lack creativity and innovation in the way they handle their accounts.

Thorough deliberation is critical when shopping for the best agent. Treat the research process as you would if you were purchasing a new car or home.

Make sure that you pick a company that is highly regarded

by consumers. You should also verify that any prospective agent possesses all necessary licenses and training.

Once you have narrowed your list of possible agents, it is a good idea to meet with each one. Have a list of questions and concerns ready so that you can gather all of the information you need. Be certain that you feel comfortable with their answers before you take the process any further.

If you feel as if an agent is trying to get you to purchase a policy that does not meet your needs, you should proceed cautiously. Simply inform the agent that you need more information and are not ready to make a decision immediately.

If you are working with the right kind of agent, they will allow you to take as much time as you need to collect all of the facts and details necessary to make your decision. They will also treat you like as a good teacher would — giving you lots of useful information — rather than as a high-pressure salesperson.

Also make sure that your agent is available and willing to have an ongoing relationship with you. If the relationship ends once the sale is made, you will be at a clear disadvantage. If your dialogue is a continuing one, you will be able to contact your agent if you have any questions or concerns. This could even include seeking help with filing a claim should the need ever arise.

Take caution to choose an agent that is reputable and established. If your agent has been in the business for many years, chances are they will better understand the policies that they sell and be able to take extra care to ensure that you are properly protected.

It is important to secure the appropriate type and amount of insurance to adequately protect yourself and your financial future. Thorough research needs to be done to make certain that you have purchased insurance coverage tailored to your specific circumstances.

You, your family and your finances will reap the benefits of the extra effort. A seasoned, skilled insurance agent is an invaluable resource for safeguarding your future.

Selecting the Right Insurance Agent for Your NeedsSelecting the right attorney is essential. It can make a

difference in winning or losing a case. With a bit of knowledge, you can find an attorney who matches

your needs and advocates strongly for your side of the case. There are some important factors to consider when choosing

a lawyer.

AFFORDABILITYHire the best lawyer you can afford. Do not settle for

inexpensive representation, simply because he or she is cheaper than the average attorney. Quality should always come first in this situation.

If you cannot afford an attorney for your criminal case, do not hesitate to ask for a court-appointed lawyer. Taxpayers pay these attorneys to represent the indigent. A court-appointed attorney is a real lawyer who can offer you valuable assistance.

Never hire an attorney who has been disbarred in any state.

RELEVANT ISSUESDetermine what legal issues are you facing. For instance, if

you have been arrested while driving under the influence, you should get a criminal lawyer who specializes in traffic law.

If you are dealing with a simple matter of a real estate transaction, you’ll want to hire a real estate lawyer.

Because there are so many lawyers specializing in a wide variety of legal issues, deciding the type of lawyer you need is of utmost importance before you pay anyone a retainer.

REFERENCESFinding a great attorney can often be as simple as asking for

references from past clients. If you are in the midst of a divorce, ask others who are divorced which attorney they used. People are usually happy to share their opinions, good and bad.

CASE HISTORYSeveral online sites can help you determine an attorney’s

success rate. You can also look to see if an attorney you are considering has a good settlement rate.

You may also ask attorneys directly about their case histories. A lawyer with a great record will readily provide the information.

ONLINE RATINGSOther websites provide ratings for attorneys. These sites are

often the easiest places to find client reviews. Take both positive and negative reviews for what they are worth; not everyone is honest nor is everyone a liar.

Comments about the lawyer’s availability, personality and results should all be taken into consideration. After all, your attorney should be in your corner. You don’t want to struggle to get in contact with him.

Keep in mind, sometimes gruff lawyers are the best ones. While no attorney should treat clients rudely, you are paying for their services. A personable lawyer is great to have, but if they’ve lost more cases than they have won, choose another.

CONSULTATIONMany attorneys offer free consultations. Take advantage of

them. This meeting gives you the opportunity to discover if the lawyer is a good match for your needs.

If you feel any discomfort during your meeting, do not hire the attorney. If your first consultant is not free, look elsewhere.

Finding an attorney can be a frightening experience. You may feel stressed and uncertain. Hiring an attorney you feel you can trust will go a long way toward resolving your situation successfully.

Don’t be shy when you meet an attorney for the first time. Ask questions and expect forthright answers. If you aren’t satisfied, find someone else. There are plenty of attorneys who can help you.

Selecting the Right Insurance Agent for Your Needs For many people, there's no better way to relax

than with good friends and fine beverages. If you want to find the best drinks — both for

yourself and your guests — not any run-of-the-mill liquor store will do. You want to find one that offers a wide selection of quality products, knowledgeable service and a convenient, safe location.

wIDE VARIETYFind a store that matches your tastes as a drinker.

Some stores may carry more local beer selections from nearby microbreweries, while others may specialize in wines or high-end imported rum or scotch.

Whatever your preferences, find a store that carries a large stock of popular products to keep your fridge and liquor cabinet stocked, along with some new, rare or exotic products to keep things interesting.

You should also look for a store with a variety of price points. High-end, top-shelf drinks are a must, of course, but lower-priced selections can have an important place in your liquor cabinet, too.

For example, liquors for use in mixed drinks or baking recipes don't always have to be from the very best, top-quality brands because the purity and smoothness of the flavor will be diluted with other ingredients.

If you plan to drink a liquor by itself, however, without any additions, it's much better to look for a quality product — even if it's significantly pricier.

ExPERT ADVICEBuying liquor can be a big investment over time,

especially if entertain frequently. And the more you spend on alcohol, the more important it is to get good advice from people who know their drinks.

Just like the recommendation from a great sommelier can be valuable at a restaurant or winery, the staff at a good liquor store can help you find just the right drink for a specific use or occasion.

You should be able to tell them what flavors and tastes you like — perhaps along with some brands you've enjoyed in the past — and let them steer you in the right direction.

Good, personal service can be worth a few extra minutes of driving.

OVERALL EXPERIENCEFinally, consider the overall shopping experience. You'll want to find a store that's convenient —

typically either close to your home or near your route home from work — but that's just the start.

Ideally, the store should be clean, well-lit, organized and in a safe neighborhood in a well-traveled part of town.

A properly managed store will take pride in its appearance, selection and employees. Look for a business that stands out from the crowd.

If you can find all those things in one store, your enjoyment and relaxation will be even sweeter.

How to Choose a Liquor Store

A bright smile can boost your self-confidence and self-esteem, and dental implants can be an important step in improving your smile.

For those looking to replace missing teeth, implants offer both stability and permanence. Generally, dental implants are root-like titanium pegs placed into the jawbone, which are used as anchors for crowns, bridges or dentures.

They’re not for everyone, though. There are a few things to consider if you wish to determine whether you are a good candidate for dental implants.

The latest implants look more authentic than their predecessors, and advances in technology have given them the ability to fit better within the jawbone, which will fuse to the implant. They are more expensive than some other options, but they can be worth the investment for an attractive smile that you don’t have to soak in a glass overnight.

Properly done, they offer the look and feel of natural teeth and, because they fuse to your jawbone, offer more stability than other alternatives. This integration into your jawbone helps the implanted teeth feel more natural and very comfortable.

Additionally, implants can help you keep the teeth you already have, as they do not rely on neighboring teeth for support.

Many people who suffer with ill-fitting dentures should consider implants. Most patients who make the switch from dentures to implants report that the implants are big improvement in terms of comfort and maintenance.

The first step in determining whether implants are for you is to see a dentist for a complete dental health assessment.

A patient needs healthy gums and bone tissue to ensure

that the dental implants can be properly secured to the jawbone. The dentist should also rule out health conditions that would make you a poor candidate for dental implants.

Your appointment should be with a dental specialist. You want to make sure the dentist has the specialized training and expertise to do the procedure.

The appointment should include a full dental exam. The office will take a complete medical and dental history. They will take X-rays and perhaps a CT scan to determine if you have adequate bone density and to determine the shape of your jaw.

If it is determined that there is a shortage of gum tissue in the mouth, the dentist may be able to perform dental bone grafts that can strengthen the area in which the dental implant is to be placed. It is preferred, though, that the patient's dental bone and gum tissue be healthy before beginning the dental implant procedure.

Generally, if you can answer yes to the following questions, you are a good dental implant candidate:

1. Are you in overall good health?2. Do you have healthy gums and enough healthy bone

to anchor the implants in the jaw?3. Are you committed to being diligent about the care of

your implanted teeth and general dental health including regular brushing and flossing?

4. Will you maintain a schedule of regular dental check-ups?

Dental implants are expensive, so you should check with your insurance company to see if they are covered before proceeding.

They can be a great confidence booster as you regain your beautiful, natural smile.

Choosing a crematory/cremation center can be a difficult and emotional process. Making decisions in advance can help ease the loss your loved ones will endure. It will spare them the need to make tough choices while grief-stricken and stressed. Discussing death with family and friends is not easy. Many people fail to plan for their own deaths, or they procrastinate on asking loved ones about their wishes.

Cremation is steadily becoming more popular than traditional burials. These services can be a cost-effective solution for today’s financial realities. Traditional funerals and burials can be expensive, involving the purchase of a casket, headstone and grave site. Family members may incur expenses that are well beyond their means in an effort to respect the memory of loved ones.

A Cremation Center is connected to or associated with a funeral home. The Center may offer additional services, such as grief counseling. After the cremation, you can choose to bury the ashes, scatter them, keep them in an urn at home or

place them in a memorial building, or have them placed into memorial keepsake jewelry – something that is becoming very popular for its endearment.

When searching for a Crematory or Cremation Center, ask friends and family for referrals. One important factor to consider is how you feel about the staff. You should feel comfortable asking questions about the process. The staff should be competent. They should be able to provide you with all of the information, options and resources you need to make an educated decision.

It is important to find a Crematory or Cremation Center that will explain essential aspects, such as how the remains are handled, breakdown of pricing, and their process of making ashes for the urn. It will enable you to understand what will happen to the body of the deceased.

By doing a little research and choosing wisely, you can avoid additional problems and stress during a difficult time.

How to Choose A Crematory or Cremation CenterIt’s never comfortable to think about making funeral

arrangements for a loved one, but it’s wise to think ahead so you can be clear-headed and deliberate when it’s time to make difficult decisions.

Most people do not have a lot of experience planning funerals and have to learn as they go. Funerals are costly, prices can vary dramatically and your emotion can sometimes cloud the decision-making process.

Here are some things to think about before your time of grief, so you’ll be able to make the wisest choices possible under difficult circumstances.

The first order of business will be to determine if the deceased has made or paid for any funeral arrangements.

Even if no arrangements were made, ask family members and close friends to determine if the deceased made any specific wishes known. If possible, those wishes should be respected.

If the deceased had any pre-arrangements with a local company, they should be contacted directly. Although in most cases everything will be covered, additional fees may be involved if the original paperwork states that out of pocket expenses, such as cemetery fees, clergy, flowers, etc are not covered.

To find a funeral home, ask friends, relatives and pastors for a referral. Getting a referral is a good way to weed out funeral homes that might not have impeccable reputations. It’s also helpful to think back on funerals you have attended and the impressions you had of the funeral homes in your community.

Without referrals, you may need to shop around. Start with an Internet search, choose three or four funeral homes that seem to fit your needs, and make a visit to each one. It might be helpful to take a close friend or relative along.

Cost is a major concern for most families. Ask the

funeral director about the basic fees. Ask about the services they offer and any payment arrangements that can be made. Don’t make any decisions on the spot.

Ask lots of questions and take notes. Funeral home personnel should patiently answer all of them. Ask about hours for viewing, in-house services versus off-site, cremation services, what is included, and the cost of extras and special requests.

The Federal Trade Commission requires funeral homes to provide customers with a price list.

Once you have decided on the funeral home and type of service, the next step is to get the paperwork in order. Your funeral director can help navigate the necessary forms and permits.

If there are other relatives or friends involved, sit down with them and compare notes, finding a funeral home that fits your family’s needs. Stay within your budget and do not allow yourself to be pressured into extras you don’t need or can’t afford.

Let the funeral home know who in the deceased’s family is authorized to make decisions.

(By RI law the sequence is: the Designated Funeral Agent first, then the spouse, then domestic partner, then children, then parents, then siblings, grandchildren, nieces or nephews, and lastly a legal guardian).

Be very specific about the arrangements, and speak up if something is not being done according to your intentions.

A good funeral home has the expertise to guide you through the process and to ensure the funeral runs smoothly for everyone. In your time of bereavement, a little legwork can head off hasty decisions you may regret later.

How to Choose a Funeral Home
