How To Issue Tardy Consequences while
relaxing at Sunny iconOr
How to Automate Certain Processes in Skyward

The Problem (or, As we tell Students, The Opportunity)Once upon a time, teachers were in charge of their own tardy
polices. The result:
70 different teachers = 69 different tardy policies
(Two teachers were married to each other.)
This caused confusion for the students as they had to
remember up to seven different policies each day. It also
led to inconsistency in the number of tardies allowed before
action and the type of consequences issued.
Confusion + Inconsistency = Frustration
The SolutionCreate a school wide tardy policy administered completely by
the attendance office and the assistant principals.
5 tardies = Lunch detention
10 tardies = 1 hr afterschool detention and a meeting with
the assistant principal
15 tardies = 1 hr afterschool detention and a meeting with
the School Resource Officer
20 tardies = Truancy ticket
With Every solution arises new PROBLEMS opportunities...
Long Lines of Students Missing Class
Overburdened Attendance Assistants
Try #1
Try #2
The Solution (Part 2)
Print passes efficiently
Count tardies electronically
Automatically assign detentions
Save money and time
Three Years Later...While PlascoTrac was still working as our solution, issues
were popping up:
● Costs increasing
● Support decreasing
● Data handling burdensome
The solution Evolution

The new solutionDan Hoerl from STAi created the Tardy Kiosk, an offshoot of
the devices developed for positive attendance.
The Tardy Kiosk allowed
students to directly
enter their information
into Skyward and have an
automatic pass printed-
all in less than 5
seconds.
Making it Even BetterMeanwhile, Russ Conger, Skyward genius from Illinois,
developed the core of a fantastic process that allowed for:
Tardies to be counted
Detentions to be issued
Communication to the student
Discipline entries to be created
Tracking of the detention
without any staff involvement!

* This is the only point that a staff member has to do any
entry in the process.
Take a quick BreathThat’s a lot of screens and Skyward to process.

Other Applications of the ProcessAfter seeing the success of the process, it got us thinking:
What else could we use this for?
Unknown Absences!!!
Wrapping it upThanks for attending today. We hope that you learned something that
you can use back in your district to make your work more efficient
and accurate. Hopefully, it lets you get into more classrooms and
spend more time with students and staff!
We are always stretching Skyward to serve our needs. If there is
something that you have dreamed about doing in the software, pass it
on and let’s see if we can figure it out!
