    Unfortunately there are MANY people

out there who have been placed in

managerial positions, but who simply do

not have the ability or skills required to

set direction or lead teams, in a

    responsible and respectable way.

Statistics estimate that up to 20 million

Americans face abuse at their work-

place every day*. So fear not, you are

definitely not the only one suffering in

your job due to the bad - and more

often than not, biased and irrational -

    behavior of an ill-qualified manager.

While it may be depressing to see how poorly managers can t

their people, the good news is: it is possible to effectively man

these conflicts with the rotten manager. Yes, you CAN do

something to turn the situation around for yourself.

I know from personal experience that when you are stuck wit

managerial incompetence on a daily basis and all your attemp

reason or communicate with the boss have failed - it can feel l

dead-end situation. At this point you may just want to give up

quit. But have you stopped to wonder if talking and

communicating - while commonly advocated as the most

sensible and mature approach - is really the best approach w

specifically dealing with a bad boss? After all, if you have alr

established that the boss is unreasonable, what are the

chances that you would be able to reason with him or her

    While it may seem counter-

intuitive, Ive learnt the hard way

    that managing an unprofessiona

    manager requires an altogether

    different approach from how you

would usually manage your workrelationship with an otherwise

    normal human being.

A-B-C approach to dealing with a bad bos

It is important to take action, and

not to passively sit back and

allow yourself to be the victim of

a bad boss. At the same time, the

key word here is to ACT in a

    planned and professional manner.

    To act means to carefully

    consider your options before do-

    ing something (some situations

may require you to think more

    quickly on-your-feet than others;

even if so, you should inject at

least some seconds of thought in

    advance of anything you do).

On the other hand, to react

    means to respond emotionally

and in the heat of the moment,

    without thinking things through.

If you react, the only thing

you are likely to achieve is

    giving your bad boss the

    satisfaction that he or she

    has pushed you into a

    corner, which is exactly what

the boss wants in most cases.

    So remember NEVER REACT to

the boss. Always ACT to achieve

    what you want.

do is NOT keep the boss

informed on the status of projects

you are managing. This will only

make the micromanaging bosseven more paranoid, and he or she

will clamp down on you even

    more.

This may seem like intuitive and

logical advice, but you would be

    surprised by how often people

forget to consider the type of

    boss they are dealing with,

    before trying to manage the

boss! Once you know what kind

Last but not least, remember to use

your common sense andintuition when it comes to handling

a bad boss. What do I mean by this?

For example, if you know that the

boss is insecure, the last thing you

want to do is openly question the

    bosss decisions, no matter how

    ridiculous the decision was. Such

provocation will only make the boss

    even more insecure, and react

more defensively to you in future.

Similarly, if your boss is a micro-

manager, the last thing you should

    of manager you are working

with, it will be easy to identify

    his or her weaknesses, and

break them down one-by-oneto figure out how best to deal

    with your bad manager.

tions - such as insecurity, paranoia,

    arrogance or over-ambition

which make it difficult to predict

how the boss will respond in any

    instance. As such, your actions

    should always appear positive,

    non-aggressive and seemingly

    innocent. This will require you

to be smart and subtle about how

    you approach the bad boss.

You will need to act in way thatdoes not give the boss any chance

to find fault with you and

    normally this means to AVOID

    engaging the boss in open

    communication about how his

    or her unreasonable managerial

    actions are affecting your ability

    to do your job.

Why? If the boss isinsecure, arrogant and defensive,

trying to make the boss under-

stand that he or she has poor

    leadership qualities is about as

effective as chipping away at a

100-inch concrete wall with ablunt needle. Nothing is going to

    get through, but the concrete

    wall will only become more

resilient (and if it could talk, even

start blaming you for provoking it

    unnecessarily).

HOW you choose to act is equally

vital, and the most important rule

is to act in a way that is subtle and

    non-confrontational, so as to

    minimize the possibility that you

may later on be blamed by the

    boss for your actions.

This is a genuine concern to keep

in mind: the bad boss will normally

    NOT be your regular person-next-

door, whom you can hope to

reason with, or talk sense to.

Quite the contrary, the bad boss is

    usually driven by negative emo-
