How to Repair a Bike Chain

Learning how to repair bike chain is one of the

most important lessons a bike rider can ever learn.

Some people think that just because they bought a

very expensive mountain, BMX, or road bike that

they can easily just keep on riding without worries.

Nothing can actually be farther from the truth.

One of the most common issues

Along with a busted or flat tire, a broken or loose bike chain is one of the most common

bicycle parts issues that a rider can face. This situation might be one of the most

frustrating things that a rider can face. But, it does not have to be that way.

Some research and information and preparation will go a long way in helping a person

learn about fixing a bike chain.

Get a bicycle chain tool

In most cases, the reason why the chain of the bicycle breaks is because of the pin.

See, the chains and plates of a bike chain is locked together in place by a set of pins.

When these pins come loose, the chain of the bicycle gets broken.

The chain tool is a device specifically made in order to help people adjust the pin in their

bicycle chains. This is basically the only tool a person ever needs should the pin of their

bicycle’s chains prove to be a serious issue.

Fixing the pin

While it is feasible to repair the chain while it is still on the bike, it is strongly

recommended to take it away to make things a lot easier. Repairing a bike chain is a

lot easier once it’s taken from away from the bike.

Push the pin with a problem by using the chain tool. Be very careful to not push the pin

all the way out of the chain. If the pin is pushed out putting it back in can be very difficult

or nigh on impossible. In fact, the only reasonable way of putting a pin back in is if the

bicycle chain tool itself is capable of doing so.

Snap the link into two then put the pair of links back together, ideally the pin should be

facing the direction of the person as to make the next steps easier. Push the pin back

into place using the chain tool until it is even on both sides of the link.

The next step involves grabbing the ends of the newly repaired links and moving the

chain side to side. The motion will result in the loosening of the newly connected chains.

Put the chain back into the bike’s gears and slowly test ride the bike to see if all is well.

If it just came loose

Sometimes bicycle chains don’t get broken, they simply come loose. The very first step

is to go to a complete stop and take the bike out of traffic and let it stand either by

leaning it on a flat surface or using a kick stand.

To put the chain properly back into place, try pushing the derailleur gears at the rear to

give some allowance then use the other hand to put the

chain back into place.

If the chain has come off at the read then there could

be an even bigger problem. The rear wheel needs to be

removed if the chain becomes stuck.

Push the pedals backward in order to check if the

bicycle parts are in working order.
