Writing Your Job Objective
Your Job Objective becomes your headline.
The theme to your resume and the start to someone's outlook into yourqualifications. The job objective is a brief introduction to your resume and it establishes youremployment goal. It needs to be specific enough to identify the types of jobs you have the rightskills and/or qualifications for. A job objective should also include the type of job(s you !ould like
to have. "ere's !hat you need to include...
The employer will expect to learn the following things about youthrough your job objective:
• What position you are looking for. A resume !ithout a job objective
statement effectively says# $This is !hat I've done. %ould you figure out!hat I should do ne&t$ !hich is e&tra !ork that they don't need or !ant todo. y stating an objective you give your resume focus and strength.
• To whom this document should be directed. It's very likely your
envelope !ill be opened by a clerk in "uman )esources. *our +ob,bjective helps her kno! !hich hiring person should receive your resume.-ithout that statement# you leave it up to the clerk to decide !hichdepartment !ill consider your application.
• What level of responsibility you are seeking. It is not a good thing is to

*our job objective statement should be as concise as possible. 0ome resumesmistakenly have fluffy opening statements !ith job objectives buried in them. They use phrases like1 $challenging position#$ $room for advancement#$ and$opportunity to gro!.$ %ut out the fluff since it doesn't say much to an employer."ere's !hat employers need to kno!1
• The area of !ork ($2arketing#$ $0ales$.• The title# if you kno! it ($2anager#$ $0ales )epresentative$.
• Areas of speciali3ation ($!ith an emphasis on ne! business
development#$ $focusing on graphic design$. This should be used only if asimple objective statement needs to be more clearly defined. In mostcases it isn't necessary.
Here are some examples:
• A position as 0ales )epresentative
• 4irector of 2arketing • Administrative position !ith a focus on finance.
• Associate 5ield 6roducer# T7 6rogramming
You could also try a sentence to make it specific the kinds of activities and skills you'd like to engage
in:
• To manage employees# communicate !ith clients# and !ork in the !eb design field
This approach works well because you don't have a specific job title in mind but youmake it clear what you would like to do.
If your situation requires a more generic approach# try something like1
• A position in 0ales
• An accounting position
A complete version of something that takes all elements into consideration would be:• Assistant 2anagement in bookkeeping !here 89 years of e&perience !ill add to the
functionality of the department's operations.
The job objective should appeal to the employer's needs# not the applicant's needs. -ith specific job objectives# job seekers can sho! employers the skills they have to offer. These skills# orobjectives# may match a variety of jobs. In fact# you may even get a call about a job that has more
responsibility than you initially intended. :eep this in mind !hen !riting your job objective. *our job objective can establish your professional identity.

ong or !hort "ob #bjectives?
-ell# either one is fine; it just depends on the job you are applying for and the number ofobjectives you need to mention. 0ome job objectives are long or short lists; some are paragraphsand some have a sentence !ith bulleted items. If you are not sure !hich method is best you canfind samples of job objectives on the Internet. )evie! and evaluate the samples and gain someideas.
