Year 6 exhibition 2012

Theme

How We Express Ourselves

A study into the ways in which we discover and express ideas, feelings, nature,

culture, beliefs and values; the ways in which we reflect on, extend and enjoy our

creativity; our appreciation of the aesthetic.

Central idea

Our passions and interests can lead to Action

Timeframe: Begin January complete May

Type: An individual study

• A study that starts from personal interest and passions, but extends into real world

issues

• A study that requires students to apply their learning from previous years.

How: Students should use the medium of film to express their ideas, feelings, beliefs,

values and the actions they have planned and taken, on an issue of their choice.

However those students who do not have access to media can use other methods.

What is expected?

• Examples of written work-(Exhibition Journal)

• Oral presentations

• Examples of the use of technology

• Performances in any medium e.g. dance, drama, film, video and mixed media.

What do we expect of our students?

• With some teacher support, carry out an open-ended or guided study into a real-life

issue or problem.

• To demonstrate their learning and the development

• Be academically honest when referring to their sources of information

• Reflect on the components of and processes involved in the Exhibition.

• Carry out self and peer assessment.

What about the time?

• The students will spend January until May involved with their study.

• Students need to document the Exhibition process by keeping an Exhibition Journal.

What about homework?

The home learning focus will be the Exhibition

Mathematics will continue each week

Students should continue to read every evening

The children should use their time at home to research and prepare for the

Exhibition work.

As a parent how can I help?

•To have an understanding of the purpose and requirements of the Year 6 Exhibition

•To support and encourage students and teachers through the process of inquiry so that

they may take real and authentic action.

•To keep informed about the Exhibition by reading newsletters, and by talking with your

son/daughter.

• To help your child to access resources - people, places, media and information

• To provide expert subject knowledge where applicable

• To encourage independent study and respect student ownership of the process

• Ensure that your child writes notes from written material and does not just copy out

the work.

• To celebrate with your son/daughter by attending the Exhibition Thursday 31 May.

What assistance will my child have at school?

Each student will have a teacher mentor. The mentor will:

hold meetings

be supportive and encouraging

offer advice on locating and using resources

pose questions and help interpret Information

give time management advice

document all mentor meetings

celebrate achievements and successes

provide subject knowledge where applicable

celebrate with the group by attending the Exhibition on Thursday 31 May.

Something for us all to remember As with any inquiry there will be times when it seems that students are not being very productive. • Sometimes there will be lot of discussion and thought but this will not result in anything that can be seen. Students (and adults) need time and space to wonder about things and consider their

plans.

• Considerable emphasis is placed on the Exhibition Journal .Students will show their

understanding of concepts, the process and the application of skills (e.g. problem

solving) in their Journal.

photographs or similar, using laptop or similar device to demonstrate.
