Incumbents assist patrons in the use of library resources and materials as well as provide technical support for library operations and systems. They use library related computer application programs, personal computer application programs, and computer equipment on a daily basis. Reporting and Supervisory Responsibilities The Library Assistant reports to a Library Professional. This classification may train and guide student employees. Typical Functions 1. Assists patrons in the use of library resources and materials, in person and/or via email. 2. May teach library instruction sessions. 3. May provide individual research consultations in person or online. 4. Provides reference service at the Information desk, Library Media Collections, Special Collections and Archives , and Circulation Desk. 5. Trains and guides student employees. 6. Oversees digitization, file creation, and backup. 7. Oversees maintenance of office equipment, including scanners and digital camera. 8. Compiles monthly statistical reports. 9. Operates the database and mechanical features of the Borrower Automated Retrieval Network (BARN). 1

5. Ability to organize work effectively, conceptualize and prioritize objectives, and exercise judgement.

Minimum Qualifications

One year of library-related experience or post-secondary education is required.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

Employees work indoors and are protected from weather and/or contaminants, but not, necessarily, occasional temperature changes. Employees are occasionally required to stand, sit, sort, hold, squat, stoop, walk, write, and reach with hands and arms. Employees must be able to lift up to 40 pounds and have the ability to move shelving units.
