Hazardous Area Classifications
• The Hazardous areas :is an area in which explosive gas/air mixture are ,or could be ,expected to be present in quantities. These area require special precautions to limit the sparking potential of electrical equipments
• Hazardous areas are classified into Zones as follows according to American standard .
• Zone 0 : An area in which explosive gas/air mixture is continuously present or present for long periods e.g. void space of tank containing volatile flammable liquid –However in P/Ls network the Zone 0 not available
3232
GASCO PIPELINE NETWORK DIVISION

Hazardous Areas • Zone 1 : An area in which explosive gas/air mixture is likely
to occur in normal operation– Considered 3.0 meters radius from pig launchers/Receivers Gates
• Zone 2 : An area in which explosive gas/air mixture is not likely to occur in normal operation but if it does occur it will be for a short time- Consider :
a- 7.5 meters radius from pig launchers/Receivers Gates b- 5.0 meters radius from vent pipe ,pressure relief valves c- 3.0 meters radius from screwed fitting flange

GASCO PIPELINE NETWORK DIVISION
HSE DEPARTMENT HSE INDUCTION
Introduction to H2S
Hydrogen Sulphide (H2S) is an extremely dangerous chemical compound, causing serious incidents in the hydrocarbon industry every year. It is a colorless, highly toxic and flammable gas, heavier than air tends to settle in low areas, smell like rotten eggs ( सड़े अंडे) in low concentration, its deadens the sense of smell in high concentration that has been identified as Major Accident Hazard (MAH) in GASCO operations. In the past there have been a number of H2S related Incidents in GASCO and other ADNOC Group companies, such as:• BuHasa Fatal Incident (2002).• Ruwais H2S Exposure Incident (2006).• Habshan LTI due to H2S Exposure Incident (2008).• Fatal Incidents in ADGAS and ADCO (2008 and 2009).

NOISE
The primary source of noise at the pipelines is flow noise. A high-frequency, random noise often occurs when gas and
liquid, travelling at high velocity through a valve, undergoes a rapid and severe drop in pressure. Short high excursions
(>85 dB) in noise levels may also result from specific operations such as venting, or from specific maintenance
operations. (Reference: Pipelines Division’s QHRA Report)

Controls
Hearing protection (ear muffs and ear plugs) provided to all employees who may be exposed to high noise.
All employees receive in-house initial and annual training with respect to selection, use and care of PPE.
Supervisors conduct regular “tool box talks” with field personnel.

Heat Related Illnesses
When body is unable to cool itself through sweating, heat related illness may occur. These can range from heat rash, heat cramps and heat

The most severe heat related illnesses are heat exhaustion and heat stroke. If left untreated, they could be fatal.

In case of Heat Exhaustion or Heat Stroke
Call for medical help immediately
Move the victim to a cool, shaded area. If the symptoms include dizziness or light-headedness, lay the victim on his back. If the symptoms include nausea or vomiting, or the victim is unconscious, lay the victim on his side.
Loosen and remove any heavy clothing
Have the person drink cool water (a cup every 15 minutes), if able to do so.
In the case of heat stroke, cool the body by fanning and sponge with cold water. Place ice packs under the armpits and groin area.

Prevention Strictly implement ‘mid break rule’ in summer by Abu Dhabi Government. Be aware of the symptoms of heat related illnesses and immediately inform Supervisor if they persist. Learn how to respond to heat related illnesses. Build up tolerance slowly to work in hot weather. Use the buddy system, with people working in pairs Perform the heaviest work during the coolest part of the day. Drink plenty of cool water before starting work. Continue to take cool water (a cup every 15 – 20 minutes) whilst working in hot environment Wear light, loose fitting, breathable clothing such as cotton. Take extra care when wearing personal protective clothing or equipment, such as respirator. Work in the shade, if possible. Take frequent short breaks in cool, shaded areas to allow the body to cool down. Maintain a balanced diet. Avoid tea, coffee and soft drinks. These beverages contain caffeine that increase the risk of heat related illnesses. Take extreme care if you have a history of high blood pressure, diabetes, kidney problems or fever. Implement and follow OHRA & QHRA Report recommendations related to Heat stress.
