Hymn: TiS 264
1. Hark! a herald voice is calling:
‘Christ is near,’ it seems to say,
‘cast away the dreams of darkness,
waken, children of the day!’
2. Wakened by the solemn warning
let the earth-bound soul arise;
Christ, her sun, all sloth dispelling
shines upon the morning skies.
3. Lo, the Lamb so long expected
comes with pardon now from heav’n;
let us meet him with repentance,
pray that we may be forgiv’n.
4. So when love comes forth in
judgment,
debts and doubts and wrongs to
clear,
faithful may he find his servants
watching till the dawn appear.
Anon., Latin ?6th cent.
tr. Edward Caswall 1814–78 and others
Greeting: The Lord be with you.
AND ALSO WITH YOU. (see Ruth 2:4)
Sentence: Watch and be ready, for you do not know on what day your
Lord is coming. Matthew 24.42, 44
3
Prayer of Preparation:
As we gather as God's people let us pray together:
Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open,
all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden:
cleanse the thoughts of our hearts
by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit,
that we may perfectly love you,
and worthily magnify your holy name,
through Christ our Lord. Amen.
The Summary of the Commandments:
‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord
your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your
mind, and with all your strength.’ Jesus said: ‘This is the great and first
commandment. And a second is like it: you shall love your neighbour as
yourself.’
Kyrie eleison (Kew Setting)
4
The Confession
Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith, confident in God's
forgiveness.
Merciful God, our maker and our judge,
we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed,
and in what we have failed to do:
we have not loved you with our whole heart;
we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves;
we repent, and are sorry for all our sins.
Father, forgive us. Strengthen us to love and obey you
in newness of life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
The Absolution (Celebrant)
Almighty God, who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to
him in faith: pardon you and set you free from all your sins,
strengthen you in all goodness and keep you in eternal life,
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
5
Prayer of the Day
Kindle in our hearts, Father, the same faith that impelled Abraham to set
out from his home and to live as a pilgrim in a foreign land. As we, like
him, look for the city that none but you can design and build, keep us
watchful for your Son’s coming, that we may be found faithful stewards
of all that you have entrusted to us. We ask this through Jesus Christ our
Lord. Amen.

THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD
Readings from 'New Revised Standard Version' (NRSV)
First Reading: Isaiah 1.1, 10-20
1 The vision of Isaiah son of Amoz, which he saw concerning Judah and
Jerusalem in the days of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of
Judah. 10
Hear the word of the Lord, you rulers of Sodom! Listen to the
teaching of our God, you people of Gomorrah! 11
What to me is the
multitude of your sacrifices? Says the Lord; I have had enough of burnt-
offerings of rams and the fat of fed beasts; I do not delight in the blood of
bulls, or of lambs, or of goats. 12
When you come to appear before me, who
asked this from your hand? Trample my courts no more;13
bringing offerings
is futile; incense is an abomination to me. New moon and sabbath and
calling of convocation—I cannot endure solemn assemblies with
iniquity. 14
Your new moons and your appointed festivals my soul hates; they
have become a burden to me, I am weary of bearing them. 15
When you
stretch out your hands, I will hide my eyes from you; even though you make
many prayers, I will not listen; your hands are full of blood. 16
Wash
yourselves; make yourselves clean; remove the evil of your doings from
before my eyes; cease to do evil,17
learn to do good; seek justice, rescue the
oppressed, defend the orphan, plead for the widow. 18
Come now, let us
argue it out, says the Lord: though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be like
snow; though they are red like crimson, they shall become like wool. 19
If you
are willing and obedient, you shall eat the good of the land; 20
but if you
refuse and rebel, you shall be devoured by the sword; for the mouth of the
Lord has spoken.
Response: Hear the word of the Lord,
THANKS BE TO GOD
7
Psalm: 50.1-7, 24
1 The Lord our God, the Mighty One, has spoken:
and summoned the earth,
from the rising of the sun to its setting in the west. 2 From Zion, perfect in beauty:
God has shone out in glory. 3 Our God is coming, he will not keep silent:
before him is devouring fire,
and tempest whirls about him. 4 He calls to the heavens above:
and to the earth, so he may judge his people. 5 ‘Gather to me my faithful ones:
those who by sacrifice made a covenant with me.’ 6 The heavens shall proclaim his righteousness:
for God himself is judge. 7 ‘Listen my people, and I will speak:
O Israel, I am God your God,
and I will give my testimony. 24
‘He honours me who brings sacrifice of thanksgiving:
and to him who keeps to my way
I will show the salvation of God.’
8
Second Reading: Hebrews 11.1-3, 8-16
1 Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not
seen. 2 Indeed, by faith our ancestors received approval.
3 By faith we
understand that the worlds were prepared by the word of God, so that what
is seen was made from things that are not visible. 8 By faith Abraham obeyed
when he was called to set out for a place that he was to receive as an
inheritance; and he set out, not knowing where he was going. 9 By faith he
stayed for a time in the land he had been promised, as in a foreign land,
living in tents, as did Isaac and Jacob, who were heirs with him of the same
promise. 10
For he looked forward to the city that has foundations, whose
architect and builder is God.11
By faith he received power of procreation,
even though he was too old—and Sarah herself was barren—because he
considered him faithful who had promised. 12
Therefore from one person,
and this one as good as dead, descendants were born, ‘as many as the stars
of heaven and as the innumerable grains of sand by the seashore.’ 13
All of
these died in faith without having received the promises, but from a distance
they saw and greeted them. They confessed that they were strangers and
foreigners on the earth, 14
for people who speak in this way make it clear
that they are seeking a homeland. 15
If they had been thinking of the land
that they had left behind, they would have had opportunity to return. 16
But
as it is, they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore God is
not ashamed to be called their God; indeed, he has prepared a city for them.
Response: Hear the word of the Lord,
THANKS BE TO GOD

Gradual Hymn: TiS 565
1. Author of faith, eternal word,
whose Spirit breathes the active flame —
faith, like its Finisher and Lord,
today as yesterday the same:
2. to you our humble hearts aspire,
and ask the gift unspeakable;
increase in us the kindled fire,
in us the work of faith fulfil.
4. To us who in your name believe
eternal life with you is given;
into ourselves we all receive,
pardon, and happiness, and heaven.
6. Faith lends its realizing light,
the clouds disperse, the shadows fly;
the Invisible appears in sight,
and God is seen by mortal eye.
Charles Wesley
1707–88 alt.
Music from the Revised Church Hymnary 1927 by permission Oxford University Press

We stand for the reading of the Holy Gospel as a sign of respect as we
greet our Lord who is present in His Holy Word.
The Lord be with you
AND ALSO WITH YOU
The gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Saint Luke chapter 12
beginning at the 32nd
verse.
GLORY TO YOU, LORD JESUS CHRIST.
32
‘Do not be afraid, little flock, for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give
you the kingdom. 33
Sell your possessions, and give alms. Make purses for
yourselves that do not wear out, an unfailing treasure in heaven, where no
thief comes near and no moth destroys. 34
For where your treasure is, there
your heart will be also. 35
‘Be dressed for action and have your lamps lit; 36
be
like those who are waiting for their master to return from the wedding
banquet, so that they may open the door for him as soon as he comes and
knocks. 37
Blessed are those slaves whom the master finds alert when he
comes; truly I tell you, he will fasten his belt and have them sit down to eat,
and he will come and serve them. 38
If he comes during the middle of the
night, or near dawn, and finds them so, blessed are those slaves. 39
‘But
know this: if the owner of the house had known at what hour the thief was
coming, he would not have let his house be broken into. 40
You also must be
ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an unexpected hour.’
Gospel Response: This is the gospel of the Lord,
PRAISE TO YOU, LORD JESUS CHRIST.

The Nicene Creed
Let us together affirm the faith of the Church.
We believe in one God,
the Father, the almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all that is, seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,
the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father,
God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God, begotten, not made,
of one Being with the Father;
through him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven,
was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary
and became truly human.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;
he suffered death and was buried.
On the third day he rose again
in accordance with the Scriptures;
he ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge
the living and the dead,
and his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son,
who with the Father and the Son
is worshipped and glorified,
who has spoken through the prophets.
We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.
We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead,
and the life of the world to come. Amen.
12

{Celebrant} We are the body of Christ. His Spirit is with us.
The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you.

Offertory Hymn: TiS 560
1. All my hope on God is founded;
all my trust he will renew,
through all change and chance he
guides me,
only good and only true.
God unknown,
he alone
calls my heart to be his own.
2. Human pride and earthly glory,
sword and crown betray our trust;
all we build with care and labour,
tower and temple, fall to dust.
But God’s power,
hour by hour,
is my temple and my tower.
3. God’s great goodness lasts for ever,
deep his wisdom, passing thought;
splendour, light and life attend him,
beauty springing out of naught.
Evermore
from his store
new-born worlds rise and adore.
4. Daily the almighty giver
will his bounteous gifts bestow;
in his will our souls find pleasure,
leading us where’er we go.
Love will stand
at his hand,
joy shall wait for his command.
5. Still from earth to God eternal
sacrifice of praise be done,
high above all praises praising
for the gift of Christ his Son.
Hear Christ call
one and all:
those who follow shall not fall.
Robert Bridges 1844–1930 alt.
after Joachim Neander 1650–80
Music by permission Novello & Co, UK

on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.

and deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power,

16
THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD AND THE COMMUNION
{Celebrant} We break this bread to share in the body of Christ.
We who are many are one body,
For we all share in the one bread.

remembrance that he died for us, and feed on him in our hearts by faith
with thanksgiving.
Baptised Christians who receive communion in their own church
are invited to share communion with us.
Communion wine may be received:
(a) from the common cup from (drink or intinction)
(b) from an individual glass on request from the first Eucharistic Assistant.
Or you may choose to receive the wafer only (Communion in one kind).
The Choir Sings "Ego sum panis vivus”, Juan Esquivel.
THE SENDING OUT OF GOD'S PEOPLE
Post-Communion Prayer
Prayer of self-offering
Father, we offer ourselves to you
as a living sacrifice
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Send us out in the power of your Spirit
to live and work to your praise and glory. AMEN
17
Final Hymn: TiS 619
1. Have faith in God, my heart,
trust and be unafraid;
God will fulfil in every part
each promise he has made.
2. Have faith in God, my mind,
though oft your light burns low;
God’s mercy holds a wiser plan
than you can fully know.
3. Have faith in God, my soul,
his cross for ever stands;
and neither life nor death can pluck
his children from his hands.
4. Lord Jesus, make me whole;
grant me no resting place
until I rest, heart, mind and soul,
the captive of your grace.
