National Child Measurement Programme (ncmp)The National Child Measurement Programme involves weighing and measuring reception and year 6 children attending school in Kirklees, and is now in its fourth year. The results of the 2007/08 programme have been analysed and one in five reception children and one in three Year 6 children are at risk of being overweight or obese in Kirklees.Currently the MEND (Mind, Exercise, Nutrition, Do It) programme is running in venues across Kirklees to support kids and their families to achieve a healthier lifestyle through a programme of healthy eating and being active. If you require any further information about MEND please contact Emma Schofield on 01484 234096 or alternatively by email at [email protected] pathways and further weight management services for children who are overweight and obese are currently being developed via a multi-agency, Kirklees-wide service review and will increase the capacity and range of services available across Kirklees.

Are the students Up-forit?

The Up-forit project uses a social marketing approach to influence behaviour in students aged 16-24, attending further and higher education establishments in Kirklees. The aim is to halt the year on year rise in the number of young people who are overweight or obese by supporting them to become more physically active and adopt healthier eating practices.

Activities last term included:

• 2000 starter packs were distributed at fresher’s fair, containing quick, easy and cheap recipe cards along with the ingredients to cook them.

• 660 students attended a high profile dance launch event at a night club where future classes were showcased.

• A “Take on the Takeaway” event featuring James Martin was held to encourage students to cook easy, healthy food.

• 33 teams signed up for a dodgeball tournament; dodgeball societies are being developed with an annual tournament to encourage sustainability.

The project also made it to the final of the Communicating Health Awards which recognised excellence in all forms of communication in the NHS and the health and social care sector and was shortlisted in the Best Social Marketing Campaign category.

The Up-forit web site www.up-for.it.com is linked to a Facebook page to promote cooking and dance sessions following on from free ‘give it a go’ dance sessions and cooking demonstrations in Storthes Hall residence.

PRIMARY CARE FOCUSThe results are in!A big thank you to all the surgeries that completed the Obesity Audit at the beginning of the year. The obesity team has been attending local events to share the results but if you haven’t seen them here is a summary:

New EquipmentIn May this year every GP surgery in Kirklees received a new set of high capacity Seca scales with a height measure and a Bodystat Bio-impedance machine. This was in response to the findings from the Obesity Audit and following a consultation with a selection of primary care staff.

A representative from Bodystat ran four training sessions with over 80 practice staff attending the sessions.

As the Kirklees Adult Weight Management Service is due to be launched in the New Year, the Obesity Team would encourage you to routinely weight and measure all patients and record those who are obese on your obesity register. This will help to inform the future service demand.

Visit www.healthyweight4kirklees.nhs.uk and register for the Kirklees Healthy Weight Network to access the presentation and useful hints and tips about measuring body fat using the Bodystat Machine.

• 41 practices completed the audit giving a 55% response rate. Of these, 30 practices (73%) had a dedicated obesity lead within the practice.

• 95% of practices are routinely using BMI to define the degree of overweight and obese; a broad spectrum of clinical staff carry out height and weight measurements within practices.

• Only 46% of practices considered their equipment for measuring height and weight to be ‘satisfactory.’ Many practices commented that they do not have access to high capacity scales capable of weighing very obese patients. 7% of practices do not calibrate their scales regularly.

• Department of Health resources developed to support primary care professionals such as Raising the issue of Weight, Why weight matters and Your weight, Your Health are not being used routinely with overweight and obese patients.

• Signposting to weight management services such as the Practice Active and Leisure Scheme (PALS) and Young PALS is poor. The audit has highlighted that many practices are not aware of weight management programmes such as Mind, Exercise, Nutrition, Do It (MEND) which is aimed at children aged between 7 and 13 and their families.

• 56% of practices identified future training needs.
