world community since the end of World WarII. India has also ratified various international
conventions and human rights instruments
committing to secure equal rights of women.

The Declaration on Elimination of Violence
Against Women adopted by the UN General
Assembly in 1993, defines Violence Against
Women as any act of gender based violence
against women that results in or is likely toresult in physical, sexual or psychological
harm or suffering to women, including threats
of such acts, coercion or arbitrarydeprivations of liberty, whether occurring in
public or private spaces.

Constitutional PrivilegesThe Constitution of India guarantees human certain
rights to All Indian women which are as follows:-
Equality before law forwomen (Article 14)
The State not to discriminate against any citizen on
grounds only of religion, race, caste, sex, place ofbirth or any of them (Ar ticle 15 (i))
The State to make any special provision in favourofwomenand children (Article 15 (3))
Equality of opportunity for all citizens in mattersrelating to employment or appointment to anyoffice under the State (Article 16)

The State to direct its policy towards securing formen andwomenequally the right to an adequate
means of livelihood(Article 39(a));and equal payfor equal work for both men andwomen (Article39(d))
To promote justice, on a basis of equal
opportunity and to provide free legal aid bysuitable legislation or scheme or in any other wayto ensure that opportunities for securing justiceare not denied to any citizen by reason of
economic or other disabilities (Article 39 A) The State to make provision for securing just and
humane conditions of work and for maternityrelief(Article 42)

The State to promote with special care the educational andeconomic interests of the weaker sections of the peopleand to protect them from social injustice and all forms ofexploitation (Ar ticle 46)
The State to raise the level of nutrition and the standard ofliving of its people (Ar ticle 47)
To promote harmony and the spirit of commonbrotherhood amongst all the people of India and to
renounce practices derogatory to the dignity ofwomen(Article 51(A) (e))
Not less than one-third (including the number of seatsreserved forwomenbelonging to the Scheduled Castesand the Scheduled Tribes) of the total number of seats tobe filled by direct election in every Panchayatto bereserved for women and such seats to be allotted byrotation to different constituencies in a Panchayat (Article243 D(3))
