Section Drawing Exercise

This is the very first exercise we do, just to get the drawing feelings started. The instructor brought in a box with a interesting bow on top of it and asked us to cut a section and drawing it. There was a subject inside and we were asked to guess what that was and draw it from our imagination.

Addition & Subtraction

During this exercise, I was asked to establish a grid on a 18” x 24” bristol paper with variety of line weights. After that grid on the bristol paper is cut and assemble together to a 5” x 5” cube, with drawn on each side. Next I carve out 1/3 of the volume of the cube to create an interesting cube shape, with complex relationship between interiors, exteriors, shapes, forms and spaces by chip boards. Finally, three sections had to be drawn to illustrate the spaces created in and outside the subtracted cube.

Division

After carving out the cube, I was asked to cut the cube in two parts and then choose an interesting way to orientate them together to make a 5x10x20 inches model that serves as a building with spaces and stairs by museum boards.

My focus is to create the most spaces as possible, so not only for the people but also my own self to experience the spatial effects that I can make with the model. With that in mind, I created 5 spaces:

1. The disruptive space

2. The half-closed space

3. The opened space

4. The transitional space

5. The uninhabitable space

Multiplication

In this final project we were encouraged to make a physical model out of 3 materials: blaster as the surrounded landscape, wood and chipboard as the structure. We also have two neighbors on the two sides to allow us the opportunities to work with each other to create models that physically and conceptually connecting to each other.

Our instructor especially encourage us focus more on the modules, to find and create a enough sophisticate model yet controllable, so that we can make them grow along all the x,y and z axis, in order to create a volume of systems and logics and spaces by carving out that volume.

My concept is contradiction. The shapes, methods of locking and the final form of the wood and chipboard pieces are contrast with each other: the wood pieces are simple and the chipboard pieces are more intricate.
