Spheres or spherical forms in digital fabrication can only be approximated with Cartesian coordinate system.
However, currently available options for spherical coordinate digital fabrication is either limited or too expensive.

By designing a mechanism that is coherent with the
geometry, the process becomes open to the possibility
of new types of fabricated objects and applications.

Despite the growing hype on 3D printers, there hadn’t
been many attempts to focus on the aesthetics of the
machine itself.
As collaboration with a designer(Hyun Park) and an
architect(Kate Cho), the goal was to reinterpret a delta-
type 3D printer as an exhibitable objet as well as to exhibit
the on-site 3D printing of crystal-lattice-inspired artifacts
which symbolized the gradual growth of crystals.

The design goal was to create a robust desk with a timeless design that can be also used as an introductory example for beginners.
The Standard Desk is a simple and robust desk that can be made from a single sheet of plywood. Although there are many creative digital designs available for CNC milling furniture, these designs sometimes require too much material or may only be suitable for specific uses.
18
Different 2.5D milling techniques were incorporated together to maximize knowledge acquisition during the fabrication process.
19
The project was sponsored by Gwacheon National Science Museum and it is now being used as a tutorial for a CNC milling class.

From February 12th to March 11th, I worked as a visiting prosthetics engineer for ROW 3D, a non-profit organization based in Amman, Jordan.
My mission was to design a prosthetic hand for a 12-year-old Syrian child who lost two legs, three of his fingers on his left hand, and half of a thumb, resulting from a barrel bomb.
22
Based on the finger design of the Flexi-Hand, I devised a modularized system where flexible filament is used to connect each part of the hand. This not only reduced the printing time and risk of failure while printing, it also improved actual fitting experience with the patients.
23
Although the actual improvement of the grip force was less than expected since the patient was fairly accustomed to handling objects with his remaining two fingers, there was substantial improvement in holding and catching of objects.
Fitting usually cost the technician another week to redesign and print the hand once again if it didn't fit. Also, having a simplified BOM using single source material is hugely important in limited resource settings such as the Zaatari Refugee Camp.
24
After coming back to Korea, I produced a demo mechatronic hand for the Royal Jordanian Medical Service(RMS) Prosthetics Center in Amman, based on a modified version of the Flexi-hand from a South Korean volunteer group 'FunMove'.
Instead of using a myoelectric sensor which requires disposable electrodes, this version uses a FSR(force sensitive resistor) for better maintainability under demonstration uses. Sung-yeop Kim of CampusD helped with actual CAD work and fabrication.

'Captives' is a sculpture series by London based artist Davide Quayola.
For his group exhibition in Seoul, Quayola wanted to fabricate the two 2-meter high sculptures (B01,B05) out of High Density EPS(Expended Polystyrene) locally in South Korea. The only way to materialize the complex shape of the sculpture was by using a 7-axis robotic milling technique.
Since the robotic milling of the sculpture of this size was unprecedented in South Korea, everything from material sourcing to tool selection had to be learned from scratch. The sculpture was exhibited to the public at 'Peaceminusone' exhibition from June 9 to August 23, 2015 at the Seoul Museum of Art

Matara
Matara Technical College is one of the main public vocational training
institutes in Sri Lanka. Located in a Southernmost town of Matara, approximately
180 students from 12 different courses receive training to join the future Sri
Lankan workforce. It also serves a vital role as a center for Information
Technology and Computer (ITC) education for the majority of its students, and it
is the one and only center where they can learn ITC despite having a low income.
36
However, the school's educational environment had insufficient equipment and outdated systems to carry out the mission to train Sri
Lanka’s future engineers. The TC’s computer lab was equipped with few, outdated, low-quality computers. The school’s internet connection
had long gone out of order, and the safety conditions at the lab were in a poor condition.
37
To improve the school’s educational environment, 14
used computers were donated by the Korean Ministry of
Labor and 22 new computers by KOICA. The network
connection was rearranged and reinforced to provide better
internet connectivity, and broken chairs and desks were fixed
and replaced with new furniture to solve safety issues.
Disorganized wires were reorganized into cases for improved
maintenance and safety.
In addition, the project site was divided in two
compartments to provide optimized energy savings. A student
lounge was created for students who wanted to use
computers after classes, and new lecture spaces were
constructed.
38
To draw participation and generate ownership from beneficiaries, much of the work could be done with the help of staff and
students at the Technical College. Furthermore, many of the previous resources were refurnished and reused to maximize the budget
allocation and to address further environmental concerns.

Boston University Center for Convergence The Final Project for Harvard GSD Career Discovery Program 2012
40
During the summer of 2012, I took a course on urban design from the Career Discovery Program at the Harvard Graduate School of
Design. The objective of the final project was to analyze the drawbacks of the Fenway area in Boston and to establish an urban development
plan to solve the problem.
The Fenway area struggles with a drastic fluctuation in vibrancy because the area is closely linked with Red Sox games. The area is thronged with people when there is a game. But when there is no game, its empty street and stores has the most decayed mood.
41
Although it is surrounded by the many academic institutions with more than 60,000 students, the discontinuity in the cityscape produced
by the Mass Turnpike severs the neighborhood in two, isolating the students of the Boston University from the Fenway.
42
The intervention I proposed was to build a structure that covers the turnpike which thus connects the Kenmore with the Fenway.
By weaving the divided parts of the city into one piece, the city can expect to introduce the liveliness of Kenmore Square and contribute
positively to the fabric of the city. Additionally, a strong program to attract the students from the surrounding colleges was required.
44
The Final proposal is a triangular-shaped multifunctional complex for
Boston University which includes a conference hall, offices for student
entrepreneurs, restaurants, and a fab lab.
The complex stretches over Mass Turnpike and connects BU’s
Charles River Campus and South Campus. This would increase
connectivity within the campus and be expected to induce more students
from surrounding institutions.
By carefully selecting the programs, the complex would provide
potential ground for year-round activities.

Being a co-founder and director of FabLab Seoul, I had successfully led and accomplished fundraising and team
recruitment. For lab management, a basic educational curriculum and guidelines were formulated from my fab academy
experience.
Fab Lab Seoul began in March 2013 as an affiliate of a non-profit organization with start-up assistance. It started with
a crowd-funding project for its laser cutter, which it claimed was the first fully pledged digital fabrication space in Seoul.
47
While working with FabLab Seoul, I have proposed and led multiple collaboration projects and workshops with recognized organizations.
• SK Planet -Creator Planet 2013 Developed 6 week crash course on digital fabrication & physical computing for Korean makers.
• Small and Medium Business Administration of Korea -Making Studio Workshops for entrepreneurs 2012-2013 Planned and organized hands-on workshops which includes woodworking, metalworking, 3D modeling, and molding and casting.
• British Council 2013 - Asia Youth Tech Entrepreneurship Camp
• Ehwa Women’s University 2013 - Digital fabrication workshops for industrial design majors
