response to hurricane relief efforts • 14 Approximate hours worked each day by IAFC

representatives in Baton Rouge and New Orleans, Louisiana

• 26 Meetings on Capitol Hill attended by IAFC leadership• 1 White House meeting with Deputy Chief of Staff, Joe

Hagin• 1 Meeting of IAFC leadership at FEMA headquarters

with then-USFA Administrator Dave Paulison, later named Acting Director of FEMA

HURRICANE KATRINA RELIEF EFFORTS

• 13 Blast emails sent to members updating them with ongoing activity at IAFC headquarters during the relief effort.

• 40 Media calls seeking IAFC comment on hurricane-related issues

• 33,790 Hits to the IAFC website home page from September 1-21,2005– 6,800 hits to the IAFC Katrina website (www.iafc.org/hurricane)

• 2,000 Teams of career and volunteer firefighters serving as community relations representatives that FEMA asked the IAFC to help organize

• 500+ Fire departments interested in “Adopt a Firehouse” program launched by Firehouse.com and supported by the IAFC. (www.adoptafirehouse.com)

MEMBER OUTREACH

• IAFC Katrina Relief Fund– $61,000 raised to aid IAFC members and support the

IAFC Incident Command Post– Contributing Sponsors: Anheuser-Busch, Energizer,

IAFC EMS Section, Cape Elizabeth (Maine) Fire Department

– The relief committee dispatched funding to 58 members totaling $58,000

• 64% of those contacted declined assistance– Contributions from IAFC staff members:

• 600 emails, 250 letters, and 400 phone calls

STRATEGIC ALLIANCE

• The IAFC has formed a partnership with FireRescue Magazine, owned by Elseveir Inc.– The alliance will create the largest and most

comprehensive family of conferences and publications serving the fire and emergency services industry

– Partnership also includes working with Elseveir’s sister company, Reed exhibitions, to strengthen the exhibit and sponsorship opportunities at both organizations’ trade shows

– More information regarding the partnership with FireRescue Magazine will follow during Saturday’s sessions

NATIONAL EXPOSURE

• The IAFC has appeared in the nationally distributed newspaper, USA Today, 3 times in the past 6 months– “Don’t Provide” ad campaign– Announcement of National Safety Stand Down– In support of providing access to 24MHz of radio

spectrum in the 700 MHz band for public safety use nationwide. (October 25, 2005)

• Currently assisting USFA with the development of a new strategic plan for the New Orleans Fire Department

• Beginning a NIMS project– 10 intrastate mutual aid plans will be

developed in 10 pilot states.

• Conducted educational sessions at FRI on wellness/fitness and vehicle safety issues

• Continuing weekly email newsletter focusing on hazardous materials issues

• Created a National Fire Service Mutual Aid System task force– Focused on the development of interstate mutual aid

plans for all 50 states.– Task force will be completed by August 2006

• Summit of the status of the USFA– 16 major fires service organizations participated to

establish the status of funding at the U.S. Fire Administration

– Outcome: Eight findings and five policy goals to improve the standing of the fire service within DHS

• Preserving Rural Firefighter Assistance Grants– IAFC was instrumental in restoring $10 million in the

Senate Interior Appropriations Bill; pending in Congress

• Leading efforts to achieve more spectrum for first responders– Success probable– Helped fine-tune the FCC proposal– Defended the FCC action against corporate and other

interests seeking to overturn it– IAFC and its public safety partners filed an amicus

brief in federal appellate court agreeing with the FCC not to “stay” the order

• Removal of hazmat placards from rail tank cars stopped

FY 2006 DHS APPROPRIATIONS

• President Bush signed the DHS Appropriations Act for Fiscal Year 2006 (H.R. 2360) into law on October 18, 2005– DHS Total Appropriation: $31.9 billion– Established the Preparedness Directorate– USFA: First-Time Separate Line Item of $45 million

and moved to Preparedness Directorate– FIRE Grant: $545 million– SAFER Grant: $110 million
