COURSE DESCRIPTION:English Composition 1 is a service course designed to develop the
students ability to communicate his or her thinking in clear, cogent
written expression conforming to the rules of Standard American
English. Specifically, the course provides instruction, training, and
practice in the following:
A. the writing process, from prewriting through final editing
B. use of the basic patterns of structure and development, from
description and narrative to argumentation
C. analytical and critical reading, as students evaluate their own
work as well as others
D. the principles of research and documentation, with emphasis on
quotation and paraphrase

COURSE PREREQUISITES:Students enrolled in EH 101 must meet one of three criteria
A. score of 17 or above on the Enhanced ACT English Sub Test;
B. a score of 420 or above on the SAT Verbal Test;
C. a grade of C or above in EH 098.

LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES:
A. Writing Assignments:1. Blog PostsDuring the first part of the semester, you will have the
opportunity to publish your writing to a class blog.
2. Writing ProjectDuring the second half of the semester, you will
have the opportunity to select awriting projectto complete. You will be
responsible for selecting your topic, research question, and method forcompleting the project and for creating a syllabus that outlines a project
context, schedule, guidelines for demonstrating learning progress, and a final
assessment.
B. Course Writing Guide: I have created awriting guideon the various
principles of effective writing. This guide contains readings, videos, and web-
based tutorials. I have provided recommended dates for you to complete each
unit in the guide on the course schedule.

C. Peer Feedback: In order to help you internalize effective writing, you
will have the opportunity to provide feedback on your peers writing and toreceive peer feedback on your own writing. Developing your ability to
evaluate someone elses writing and receive and integrate constructive
feedback from others on your own writing will help to improve your abilityto independently evaluate your own writing and use it to revise and improve
your writing.
D. Tweets, In-class Activities, etc.: In order for this course to be
successful, it is essential for you to fully participate in all informal and
formal course assignments, including assigned readings, Twitter sessions,
in-class discussion and writing activities, and, if necessary, individual
writing conferences and tutoring sessions with the instructor. These
informal course assignments have been designed to foster a collaborative
learning community and an individualized learning experience for each
student.E. Writing Portfolio: As you complete each assignment, you will begin
building a body of work (or a portfolio) that demonstrates your development
as a reader, a critical thinker, and a writer. As part of your assessment of
your progress in meeting the course objectives, you will submit your
portfolio on the last day of class. This portfolio will both represent your
scholarly work in the course and will allow you to reflect upon your growth
as a writer during the course of the semester and to assess your writing
proficiency as you transition from EH 101 to EH 102.
F. Assessment
You will be given the opportunity to assess your growthas a writer throughout the semester. These self-assessments together with
your writing portfolio will be used to determine your level of participation
and engagement in learning opportunities and in meeting the course
objectives. The following grading scale is used in EH 101: A, B, C, and
NC.

unexcused absences. This policy begins Sept. 7. A student with four or
more unexcused absences will receive NC (no credit). In addition to this
freshman attendance policy, students in EH 101 must follow the English
Departments overall attendance policy, which requires students to be
present at 75% of class meetings. This means that a student may miss no
more than seven class meetings. This policy begins the first day of class.
This policy applies to both face-to-face meetings and online participation(successful completion of online work assignments will qualify as
attendance for online class time).
B. Tardy PolicyIt is disruptive to be tardy to class, so please avoid
being tardy. If you do arrive late, it is your responsibility to notify the
teacher of your attendance by handing in a dated, signed note at the end of
class. Otherwise, you will be reported absent for that class.
C. Make-up PolicyYou may make-up missed assignments and tests
only if the absence is excused. This means you must provide
documentation for the absence. If the teacher excuses the absence, you
must arrange a convenient time with the teacher to complete the missedwork.
D. Civility StatementAll students are expected to attendclass fullyprepared with appropriate materials and all devices that make noise turned
to the off position (e. g., pagers, personal stereos, etc.). Any student
behavior deemed disruptive by the professor will result in expulsion of the
student from the classroom, with an absence for the day and possible
disciplinary action.
E.Personal Electronic Communication DevicesAll forms of personal
electronic communication devices should be used for learning purposesonly. If a students use of a device is deemed to be disruptive to thelearning environment, the student will be asked to leave, with an absence
for the day.
F. Disabilities Accommodation ActAny individual who qualifies for
reasonable accommodations under The Americans With Disabilities Act or
Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 should contact the teacher
immediately.

G. Academic Honesty: Students found in violation of the AcademicHonesty Policy as set forth in the University Policies section of the 2010-
2011 Student Handbook will receive an NC for this course with the
possibility of expulsion from the University. The student should be aware
that plagiarism is a form of academic dishonesty and is not tolerated.
