    Excitation

    The excitation system of a synchronous generator

    enables to supply the energy of a drive engine

    (turbine) to the power grid.

    Therefore high priority is assigned to the reliability

    and availability in case of system choice of excitation

    systems. That goes particularly for:

    the supply of self-sufficient, regulated direct current

    for the rotor

    enabling synchronising by exact voltage regulation

    the support of the grid operation through reactive

    power regulation

    the increase of the block and network availability

    by intelligent limiters and additional automaticcontrollers

    Nowadays rotary pilot exciters are being replaced

    more and more by thyristor excitation systems.

    In case of still economically justifiable maintenance of

    pilot exciters and when there is no high requests on

    the regulation dynamics and on the improvement of

    the efficiency, the operation performance improve-

    ment can be achieved by exchanging an existing

    voltage regulator with a modern, digital multi-function

    automatic controller.

    Via permanent magnet pilot exciter

    (PM G ), linked to the generator shaft:

    Independent of grid influences, there-

    fore full excitation system output, also

    in case of short circuits at generator

    terminals. Speed-dependent voltage

    of PM G.

    Via pilot generator, linked to the genera-

    tor shaft: Independent of grid influences,

    therefore full excitation system output,

    even in case of short circuit at generator

    terminals. Pilot generator with separate

    excitation equipment.

    Supply Variants

    Via excitation transformer:

    Preferably as shunt connection or by

    external excitation. Excitation transformer

    as high-voltage or low-voltage transformer,

    as dry type, vacuum-impregnated or cast-

    resin type, with temperature monitoring.
