President’s Message

Dear Colleagues,

Hydrocephalus 2013 Athens, the fifth meeting of the International Society of Hydrocephalus and CSF Disorders (ISHCSF) will take place 29 June – 2 July 2013, at the Athenaeum InterContinental Athens Hotel, on the mainland of Greece. On behalf of the Hellenic Neurosurgical Society, the Department of Neurosurgery at Virginia Commonwealth University and ISHCSF, we warmly welcome you to join us.

The first pre-historic settlement was constructed in 3000 BC around the hill of Acropolis where the King of Athens, Theseus unified the ten tribes of early Athens into one kingdom. This process of synoikismos – bringing together in one home – is the theme of this year’s conference which colleagues from all around the world with wide-ranging research interests and expertise in the management of hydrocephalus and CSF disorders will come together in one home, Athens. We will focus on both adult and pediatric hydrocephalus through our attendees, presenters and international faculty. The meeting will present the latest advances in the basic, clinical and translational sciences as they evolve toward a more complete understanding of hydrocephalus and CSF disorders with the overall goal of promoting the best possible care for patients. In addition, we will provide unique opportunities to future leaders of the field, who are the young investigators.

It is a great honour for the Hellenic Neurosurgical Society to host Hydrocephalus 2013 Athens “The Fifth Meeting of the International Society of Hydrocephalus and CSF Disorders” co-organized with the International Society for hydrocephalus and cerebrospinal fluid disorders. Hydrocephalus remain worldwide an important public health problem of our days, affecting all ages and particularly as the average life expectancy has increased.

We believe that this Meeting will provide a cutting edge educational and scientific experience, focusing on the latest developments in research and management of hydrocephalus and CSF disorders. A vibrant social program will provide an opportunity to explore the fascinating city of Athens and other highlights of Modern and Classical Greece.

We look forward to welcome you in Athens from 29 June to 2 July 2013 and to joint the International Society for hydrocephalus and cerebrospinal fluid disorders to strengthen its work against hydrocephalus in all parts of world.

Call For PapersThe Scientific Committee welcomes the submission of original contributions on the progress and controversies in hydrocephalus. Accepted papers will be presented as oral or poster presentations. Only a rather limited number of the most important contributions will be selected for oral presentations, as there will be only plenary, and no parallel, sessions.

Submission of Abstracts

Abstracts must be submitted not later than 2 May 2013 by filling in the on line submission form www.hydrocephalus2013.com Should you need any help or advice you may address to the Meeting Secretariat email address: [email protected]

Abstracts will be reviewed by the Scientific Committee only if accompanied by the remittance of the registration fees of at least the principal/presenting author. If your abstract is not accepted, the registration fees will be reimbursed, if a written request is received within 20 days, following your notification on the outcome of your abstract’s review. After that date the general cancellation policy will apply.

Abstract Guidelines An abstract template is available at the Annex.

Abstracts must be written in English in MS Word format and must include: title, authors, institutions and subtitles.

More specifically:Font-spacingArial, letter size 10 cpi, justified alignment, single space, no space between the paragraphs of the text, no space in the beginning of each paragraph. Only, 1 blank line should be left between the institutions and the subtitles.

TitleCapital letters, bold, left alignment (e.g. TITLE)

Authors Family name should follow the initial of the first name and then follows the superscript. No space between the family name and the superscript should be left. The name of presenting author should be underlined excluding the superscript. All author names should be separated by comma (e.g. M. Papadopoulou1, A. Papadopoulos2).

Institution As regards the institution name, Each Word Should Be Capitalized. First the Department should be mentioned; afterwards the name of the Institution/University; finally the City and the Country. All separated by comma. Please note that in case the City is part of the Institution name, then it should not be repeated before the Country (e.g. Department of Orthopaedics, University of Utah, USA).

When more than one institution is mentioned, the correspondence between authors and institutions should be done with the use of superscripts as per below. E.g. M. Papadopoulou1, A. Papadopoulos2

Each subtitle should start in a separate paragraph. No blank lines between the paragraphs. Please refer to the Annex.

E-POSTERS GUIDELINESDuring the Hydrocephalus 2013 Athens ‘‘The Fifth Meeting of the International Society of Hydrocephalus and CSF Disorders” the concept of e-posters will be used.

What is an e-poster? E-posters are the electronic version of traditional, printed posters, except that they are now viewable on screen. This new, environmentally-friendly way of presenting posters replaces the traditional printed poster which is a time-consuming, experience and totally impractical method.

The entire process of creating, submitting, managing and presenting posters online will be fully automated from here on in, and posters can be viewed in digital format using the innovativeePostersLive platform, without the need to print them out, transport them and then display them at a specific conference venue.

Where and when will the e-posters be presented? There will be desktop computers in an especially laid-out part of the conference venue where delegates will be able to access any e-poster of their choice at any time as often as they want. At the same time, large 55 inch, high definition and high resolution screens will also be installed in the same part of the conference venue instead of the traditional boards used to display printed posters. These will be used to screen e-posters on a rotating schedule.The e-posters will also be available via the internet on the website www.hydrocephalus2013.com.

How can one create an e-poster? E-posters can be created using PosterGenius software. This is a globally acclaimed software application that allows someone to create impressive, professional-looking posters in just a short time. Authors are encouraged to use the specific method to create highly attractive posters, which will also enable them to benefit from the fully automated submission and online management tools.

How and when can someone submit an e-poster? Once a paper has been approved by the scientific committee as an e-poster, the author will receive an email with a specific approval code and he/she should then create the e-poster. Posters should be submitted online.

Having used PosterGenius to create the e-poster, the author should then key in his/her approval code and by simply clicking a button the poster will be automatically mailed. Once the poster submission process is completed, the author will receive a confirmation message that the poster was received.

If an e-poster is created in another way, using Microsoft PowerPoint for example or some similar application, the author should send the poster in electronic format as a .pdf attachment to [email protected].

Athens city tour and Acropolis Museum - Half day Excursion, 30 June 2013, Departure at 09:00 - Return at 15:00From the Acropolis to Omonia Square, with the half-day sightseeing and Acropolis museum tour you’ll see all the famous sites of ancient and modern Athens on this comprehensive morning tour. Offering a perfect overview of the modern city, this guided half day tour will help you get your bearings if this is your first visit to Athens.

The Athens half-day tour departs for a photo stop at Panathinaiko Stadium where the first Olympic Games took place in 1896. It is the only stadium built out of white marble. Proceed, passing by Zappeion and Temple of Olympian Zeus. You will then pass the Athens Trilogy which includes the University of Athens, the Academy of Athens, and the National Library. Continue passing by National Garden, Hadrian’s Arc, St. Paul’s Church, Parliament, Tomb of the Unknown soldier, Schliemann’s House (Numismatic Museum), Catholic Cathedral, Old Parliament, Constitution Square, Russian Orthodox Church, and finally ACROPOLIS (visit Propylae, Temple of Athena Nike, Parthenon, Erechtheion with its Porch of Maidens).Continue the expert guided Athens sightseeing and museum tour with a pleasant short walk passing by Herodion and Dionysos Theater, in order to visit the ACROPOLIS museum. Avoid and skip the lines of the new museum. B. Cape Sounion - Half day Excursion, 1 July 2013,Departure at 15:00 - Return at 21:30Depart for a wonderful drive along the scenic coastal road which affords a splendid view of the Saronic Gulf. A crowning feature of the tour is Cape Sounion, dominated by the spectacular 5th century B.C. Temple of Poseidon (god of the sea) overlooking the Aegean Sea. The temple is located on the top of the cliff overlooking the Saronic Gulf, and on a clear day you can see seven Greek islands. The drive to and from Sounion takes you through some of the most beautiful and upscale suburbs of Athens. Lunch at a local fish tavern will round out the breath-taking afternoon.

A. Cruise to the Islands of the Saronikos Gulf – One Day Cruise,2 July 2013, Departure at 08:00 - Return at 19:1595,00 € p.p. with lunchAEGINA: The largest and most important island in the Saronic Gulf, inhabited since the 2nd millennium B.C. Aegina has a very rich past and a fascinating present. The island is famous for its pistachio groves, on which is based its economy. In the port itself, you will see the typical fish market and the very colourful floating fruit and vegetable market.

POROS: The smallest of the three islands, separated from the Peloponese by a narrow strait. A very green island, covered with pine trees and lemon trees. You will walk around its smalland narrow streets, and go up to the clock-tower to admire the panoramic view.

HYDRA: One of the most cosmopolitan islands, the favourite of the international Jet-Set. Wander through its narrow streets, admire the unique architecture of its houses, have a swim in its crystal clear waters, shop in its famous jewellery and popular art boutiques.

B. Mycenae | Epidavros – One Day Tour, 2 July 2013,Departure at 11:00 - Return at 19:0095,00 € p.p. with lunch Leave of Athens early in the morning to the Corinth Canal via the coastal road of the Saronic Gulf. Pass by the Corinth canal (quick stop to take pictures), then on to Epidavrus visiting this Ancient Epidaurus Theatre. Then through the plain of Argos on to Mycenae. Visiting the Archaeological site - the Lion Gate, the Cyclopean Walls, the Palace and the tomb of Agamemnon.
