Christ’s Call to Togetherness

In my early twenties, I was struggling with my faith, which is not uncommon for many as we begin

to strike out on our own, form our own opinions and decide where spirituality fits into our lives

and in what form. Somewhere along the line, I began finding myself on mountain trails rather than

in church pews on Sunday mornings. I remember telling people “I feel closer to God in nature.”

That’s no lie — to me, being outdoors, in God’s abundant and fierce creation is sacred ground, a

thin place, as the Celtic mystics would deem them. That in and of itself is a good (a very good)

thing, according to Genesis 1.

The only problem with making nature my church is that, well, it’s not.

The very definition of church is the body of Christian believers. Not a building, as we pastors love

to say, but a people. And so we gather together, we live in Christian community, we grow togeth-

er, we serve together.

The very act of worship is done in community to honor God. And the liturgy we follow — the pray-

ers we pray together, the hymns we sing together, the very acts in Christian community — literally

translates to “the work of the people.”

What does all of this tell us? That while our “personal relationship” with God — whether we find it

in prayer and meditation in the comfort of our quiet spaces, in our daily Bible reading and study, in

our prayer and faith life, or even on a mountain trail — is necessary, it’s not everything; being,

growing and serving in Christian community is critical to what it means to be a Christian.

Weather gets bad, kids have a sports tournament, the boss needs Sunday shift coverage on Sun-

day. These are choices we make as to whether to be in Sunday morning worship.

But “church” is much more than Sunday morning worship; again, it’s also learning in Christian

community (such as Bible studies, small groups, affinity groups, etc.), and it’s serving in Christian

community (such as participating in missions, blessing others with service and giving/tithing).

* Galatians 6.2 says we should help carry each other’s burdens.

Hebrews 10:24–25 says we should “consider how we may spur one another on toward love and

good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging

one another…”

Psalm 133:encourages us: “How good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity!”

Matthew 18:20 says the Holy Spirit is present whenever believers gather together.

Colossians 3:13–14 tells us that love binds us together in perfect unity.

Finally, Romans 12.4-5 flat-out says we’re better together than we are alone.

God doesn’t suggest how to live a life that honors him; he gives us the Church. In fact, God is the

Triune God — Father, Son and Spirit all working in community with one another. And we’re made in

his image.

A personal relationship with Jesus is awesome and necessary, but equally awesome and necessary

is our corporate relationship with Jesus — with the body. After all, the very word Corporate has its

roots in the word Corpus — “body.”

When we commit our lives to Christ, we commit our body to becoming part of a bigger body, a

whole body, a complete body — the Body of Christ itself. This is the Church.

So the next time we find ourselves finding God in our isolation, know that this is only a part of what

it means to be a child of God and a follower of Christ. For being “better together” isn’t a suggestion;

it’s the very core of who we are and who we are called to be.

In Christ’s Abundant Love,

Pastor Chris

Thank You from the GIDEONS MINISTRY …. The Centre County

Gideons greatly appreciate the very generous financial support received from members of Mt. Nittany UMC during Bill Hine’s Gideon presentations on Janu-ary 26. Your $1,220.00 contribution is the largest received so far this year, and in fact, Mt. Nittany UMC has been consistently among the top church

donors, being the highest for 5 out of the last 9 years and never below number 4 since 2012.

As Bill stated in a letter to Pastor Chris “I am impressed with you and all the things you have going on in the community with the people of the church. I was encouraged by what I heard and read during my stay at Mt Nittany UMC.” We pray that many individual's lives will be transformed as they accept Jesus as Lord and become His disciples because they have received a copy of God’s Word as a result of your generous contribution. Sincerely, Richard Auhl Gideon Representative

SO LET IT BE WRITTEN, SO LET IT BE

SUNG . . .

James Beatty, Minister of Music

So here we are church, the season of Lent. This time to set aside and remember

God’s treasure given for us—the Hymn, “When I survey the Wondrous Cross” comes to

mind. As we journey thru this season let us remember that Jesus set his face toward Jeru-

salem to become the perfect lamb,

Jesus walked with purpose knowing why He came, always keeping his eyes on the cross.

Jesus had made the journey to celebrate Passover many times but this time was dif-

ferent; this time He came to fulfill God’s plan for salvation.

Passover, the time set aside to sacrifice to God the perfect lamb, but this time a lamb

would not do. God call was for a lamb to be sacrificed on ta cross and only Jesus Christ

could be that lamb. It was in the thought that Isaac Watts wrote this old hymn “When I

Survey The Wondrous Cross”. Written in 1707 Isaac was preparing for a communion ser-

vice that he wrote this deeply moving hymn as an expression of gratitude for the amazing

love that the death of Christ on the cross revealed. I love the 3rd verse of this hymn; this

verse puts on a very personal view of Gods greatest gift… here are the words to that verse :

“See from His head, His hands, His feet, sorrow and love flow mingled down

did e’er such love and sorrow meet, or thorns compose so rich a crown?”

This unique thought by Watts points Christians to to a view of the dying Savior in a cicid

and memorable way to lead us to a deeper worship experience. John 19:17-18 says carry-

ing his own cross he went out to the place of the skull (in Aramaic is called Golgotha).

There they crucified him. God’s perfect lamb given, nothing held back, just given. God’s

only begotten Son held in the balance for all to see; Jesus, the spotless lamb.

So children of God, sing! Sing praise to God for His Son and the cross He bore for

our salvation. May we be like Thomas who said, “My Lord and my God “ Hallelujah! What

A Savior. What a gracious God.

Take time this Lenten season to read the words of this beautiful old hymn and by the

end of Lent you can say with Isaac Watts “ my soul, my life, my all”.

God’s grace and peace my brothers and sisters……….

March 1 … WESLEY FOUNDATION CAMPUS MINISTRIES Since 1920 the

Wesley Foundation has been a place for Christians and those seeking a better understanding of the Christian Faith to build friendships. The ministry offers many opportunities for people to grow in their faith. This March, students from the Wesley Foundation and other student reli-gious groups from Penn State are participating in an Alternative Spring Break trip to Alabama.

In partnership with Alabama Rural Ministry members of the Wesley Foundation will serve by helping with tor-nado relief for families who were impacted by storms in March 2019. Through Alabama Rural Ministry’s con-nections, members will also visit a variety of museums, national historic sites, and memorials and learn about the civil rights struggle, exploring the economic, spiritual, political and personal impact of racial injustice in the United States. Your mission gifts today will be mailed directly to the Wesley Foundation. You can learn more about the activities of the Penn State Wesley Foundation at www.wesleypsu.org.

March 8 … CONFERENCE BENEVOLENT SHARES

Our benevolent shares help support the entire mission of the Susquehanna Conference

UMC. Shares are used for administrative needs and the numerous ministries that the Con-

ference oversees. Camp Penn, Green Hills, Mount Ashbury and Wesley Forest are the camp retreats that the

Conference maintains. The Conference is also directly involved with 14 other ministries such as Mission Cen-

tral, The Neighborhood Center, Walk to Emmaus, Mission U and The Center. You can learn more about the

Susquehanna Conference UMC at https://susumc.org

March 15 … Burrowes Street Youth Haven The mission of the Burrowes

Street Youth Haven is to ensure that youth experiencing family conflict, abuse, neglect, home-lessness, or other crisis have a safe and supportive environment, in which to live, grow, and develop. Through residential and counseling services, we hope to provide youth and their fam-ilies with the opportunity to effectively address critical issues, and also provide them with the support that is necessary to reach their full potential. National Safe Place Week 2020 begins

March 15th. In State College, if a young person goes to a Safe Place participating business in State College, one of the places they go for help is the Burrowes Street Youth Haven. Your gift today supports the mission of the Burrowes Street Youth Haven.

March 22 UMCOR SUNDAY Your generous giving

to UMCOR Sunday is what allows UMCOR to act as the arms and legs of Christ’s church, moving toward the most vulnerable in

their darkest days. Convinced that all people have God-given worth and dignity—without regard to race, reli-gion or gender—together we are assisting those impacted by crisis or chronic need. Donations that UMCOR receives through this offering, along with other undesignated gifts made throughout the year, cover our costs of doing business. Gifts like yours make it possible for UMCOR to use 100% of all other contributions on the projects our donors specify, instead of on administrative or fundraising costs. UMCOR does not receive Unit-ed Methodist World Service or apportionment funds, so without your offerings UMCOR would not exist. Thanks for your donations!

The children had a busy February. We helped count and gather food for Souper Bowl of Caring and had lessons on the reasons

people are food insecure. We also baked Valentine Cookies with Ms. Wendy; our cookies looked and tasted yummy.

We look forward to gathering and learning how we can serve God each week as well as learn music with Mister Jim. If anyone has a talent to share, please let us know.

GIVING GARDEN 2020 . . .

Greetings from the 2020 Giving Garden! Our seed order has arrived, and we are excited to be thinking Spring! We are looking for help opening the Gar-den the last weekend of March, so please mark it on your calendar. We'll have a specific start time (probably 10ish that Saturday) when we are closer to a good weather forecast. We need to install the deer fence, plant peas, pull weeds, move rhubarb, and prepare the asparagus bed --- yes, we are going to try again!

The Garden will need volunteers for planting, weeding, harvesting and delivering. As we continue to encourage use of the Garden, we expect to add a weeknight when people can come and pick what is available, with gardeners there to help and chat. We are continuing to partner with The Mommy Shoppe and Centre House to serve their families on a regu-lar delivery basis.

We have 3 new raised beds, which will replace 3 of the rotted-out beds. The beds were a gift, and came from a small business in Maine but we will need help assembling them, tearing out the old beds, and installing the new ones. All that needs to be done in time for planting! Once we see how these beds work out, we'll develop a replacement plan for the next few seasons.

The best way to follow what is going on with the Garden is to join our Facebook group ("The Giving Garden at MNUMC") and ask Joanna ([email protected]) to add you to the email list. Whether you can help one hour a month, or one hour a week, we really truly welcome your presence. Children are great gardeners, and no experience is necessary.

We'll see you in the Garden!!
