The presented projects fi nd inspiration from the animal world and, through
the analysis and understanding of specifi c animal skin examples,
translates the learned principles into the built environment. The ways in
which the environment shapes the behavior and physiological evolution
and adaptation of animals is an interesting question for many of us.
How to translate the lessons learned from the analysis and observation of
the animal world is the design learning experience proposed to students.
The resulting architectural building envelopes perform and respond;
they take into consideration various dynamic local environmental
conditions and resources, enhancing and supporting them rather than
exploiting them, creating a more sustainable way of building and living.
Inspired by Nature is an installation of the students’ work developed by two seminar classes at SCI-Arc (Southern California Institute of Architecture, Los Angeles) and one course at NABA (Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti, Milano). Each class, starting from a common quest, analyzed and developed a unique relationship with the natural world exploring design at different scales to provide a variety of interpretations and design proposals. The installation will be exhibited at NABA during the 2010 Fuori Salone in Milan. The show will then travel to other locations during the following months.

INSPIRED BY NATURE
oppure progettati artifi cialmente.
destinati all’architettura, al fi ne di produrre nuovi effetti grazie all’introduzione
di nuove tipologie di materiali artifi ciali.

Traditionally materials have been associated with a series of physical
properties that can be used as inputs to production and manufacturing.
We could catalogue these characteristics as the literal behaviors of
matter. Recently we witnessed an interest in materials not only as ‘true
matter’, but also as a new breed where geometry, texture, coloration,
tooling and fi nish are able to provoke new sensations when they are
applied to a substance. These artifi cial materials can be described as
synthetic because they are the outcome of various qualities that are not
necessarily true to the original matter, but they are the combination of
two or more parts, whether by design or by natural processes. The work
of this seminar aims to extend the potential of architectural surfaces to
produce effect through the invention of new breeds of artifi cial matter.
natura - eventi naturali, comportamenti aggregativi, retroazioni - allo scopo

The projects investigate the possibility of developing a complex task
of interior and architectural design through the integration of dynamic
schemes of organization, structures, processes, timelines.
Conceptual references for the project are derived from the observation of
nature: natural phenomena, behaviours, strategies of organization and/
or evolution of systems, feedbacks loops.
The analysis leads to the defi nition of an operational matrix of relations in
space and time, adopted as a base for the project.
The direction of time is irreversible, it only goes forward.
The projects aimed to use the dimension of time as the main coordinate
of the design.
I progetti presentati traggono ispirazione dal regno animale; in particolare,
l’analisi di determinati esempi di pelle di animali ne suggerisce i principi
ispiratori per la progettazione dell’ambiente costruito. Come i fattori ambientali
