Your Union and the National Board Partnering to Support the Teaching Profession
Thursday, July 12 6:30 p.m. Room 301
Did you know? Board certification:
• Offers teachers valuable professional development—with a more affordable and flexible process for those who want to take the next step in their career.
• Allows school districts and unions to partner in bargaining financial incentives, including salary steps, for educators who achieve Board certification.
• Sets the stage for teachers to become classroom and school leaders who inform policy and drive positive change for the teaching profession.
Join us to learn about how you can work with your district to offer your members the benefits of becoming a Board-certified teacher.
Can’t make it to this session? Visit the AFT Activist Center to meet and connect with staff and Board-certified teachers!

2018 AFT CONVENTION | 17
In cities and states nationwide, community and labor are joining forces to build the movement for educational justice. Most recently, we have all been inspired by the teacher uprisings and the gun violence prevention efforts that have been led by students. The work to resist the nomination and policies of Education Secretary Betsy DeVos, and local efforts to fight back against state takeovers and charter expansion, are also part of this growing movement.
The Alliance to Reclaim Our Schools (AROS) organized the school walk-ins over the last several years that helped lay some of the groundwork for the teacher uprisings.
Join us as we hear about these campaigns and how we can join with AROS in a nationally coordinated campaign that organizes for bold investments in public schools and colleges attended by African-American, Latino, low-income and working-class students by making the billionaires and Wall Street pay their fair share in taxes.

The Robert G. Porter Scholars Program
The Robert G. Porter Scholars Program was established by AFT convention delegates in 1992 as a living memorial to the AFT’s former Secretary-Treasurer Robert G. Porter. The program has two purposes: to encourage AFT members to pursue continuing education to further their careers and to help to grow the union; and to support AFT members’ dependents who want to pursue a career in labor, education, healthcare or government service. To date, 345 scholarships have been awarded. So far this year, the program has enabled 14 students and AFT members to pursue their educational dreams.
