iv IBM XIV Storage Replication Adapter

Overview

The IBM® XIV® Storage Replication Adapter (SRA) is a software add-on thatintegrates with the VMware vCenter Site Recovery Manager (SRM) platform andenables site-to-site failovers together with IBM XIV storage systems.

The IBM XIV SRA extends the VMware vCenter Site Recovery Manager capabilitiesby allowing it to employ the XIV replication and mirroring features for continuousXIV storage availability at both the protected site and recovery site.

Download siteThe IBM XIV Storage Replication Adapter is available for download from theVMware website at the following web address:

http://www.vmware.com/go/download-srm

Compatibility and requirementsThis section specifies the compatibility and requirements of version 2.2.0 of theIBM XIV Storage Replication Adapter.

Note: For information about the compatibility and requirements of a previousversion, refer to its relevant release notes.

Supported storage systemsThe IBM XIV Storage Replication Adapter supports the following storage systems.

Storage system Microcode version

IBM XIV Storage System 10.2.x

11.0.x, 11.1.x, 11.2.x, 11.3.x, 11.4.x, 11.5.x, 11.6.x

IBM Spectrum Accelerate 11.5.0.c

Attention: The IBM Real-time Compression™ feature that is introduced in XIVversion 11.6 is not supported by this XIV SRA version. Check for XIV SRA version2.2.1 or later for full support of the compression feature.

Required VMware server softwareThe following VMware server software must be installed at both the protected(primary) site and recovery (secondary) site:v VMware vCenter Server 5.0, 5.1, 5.5 or 5.8v VMware vCenter Site Recovery Manager 5.0, 5.1, 5.5 or 5.8

Required VMware client softwareThe following VMware client software must be installed on the administrator clientstation:v VMware vSphere Client 5.0, 5.1, 5.5 or 5.8

Change logThis section summarizes the changes made in different version releases of the IBMXIV Storage Replication Adapter.

Version 2.2.0 (March 2013)Version 2.2.0 adds support for newer versions of the XIV microcode, SpectrumAccelerate, and VMware vCenter Site Recovery Manager, as detailed in thefollowing sections:v Supported XIV storage systems.v Required VMware server software.v Required VMware client software.

It also includes the following enhancement and fix:

Ticket ID Description

SRA-258677 Enhancement: At both the protected and recovery sites, the IBM XIV SRA aims to best achieve the followingconfiguration goals on the XIV storage system, ifpossible:

v Keep the volume LUN numbers upon failover, andreuse the same ones upon failback.

v Map volumes with the same LUN IDs across all thespecific ESXi hosts that are requested for the failover.

v In more scenarios, map volumes to a cluster thatcontains all the specific ESXi hosts that are requestedfor the failover, rather than mapping to individualhosts.

For more detailed information, refer to the user guide.

SRA-239280 Fixed: The IBM XIV SRA does not work when version3.0.0 of the IBM Storage Management Console forVMware vCenter is used in parallel.

Version 2.1.1.1 (September 2012)Version 2.1.1.1 included the following critical fix.

Ticket ID Description

SRA-243783 Fixed: Test or Recovery operations may fail whenconsistency groups are used over asynchronousmirroring.

Version 2.1.1 (August 2012)Version 2.1.1 added support for VMware vCenter SRM 5.1, and includes thefollowing fix.

Ticket ID Description

SRA-204003 Fixed: The IBM XIV SRA fails if a mirrored consistencygroup and a mirrored volume have the same name.

2 IBM XIV Storage Replication Adapter

Version 2.1.0 (February 2012)Version 2.1.0 introduced support for VMware vCenter SRM 5.0 and version 11.0 ofthe IBM XIV microcode (XIV Gen3).

Known issuesThis section details the known issues in version 2.2.0 of the IBM XIV StorageReplication Adapter, along with possible solutions or workarounds (if available).

Ticket ID Description

SRA-167578 In some cases, the VMware vCenter SRM messagesmight be very general and not specific to the IBM XIVSRA.

When a volume mapping operation fails (for example, when the specified FC ports do not belong to any XIVhost), the 'Test' and 'Failover' operations fail as well, butSRM does not provide an appropriate messageregarding the failure.

An indication regarding the mapping failure and anysubsequent operation failure can be found in the IBMXIV SRA log file.

SRA-258735 The IBM XIV SRA does not work with XIV storagesystems configured to use LDAP authentication.

Currently, there is no workaround or solution for thislimitation. However, local authentication can be usedinstead of LDAP.

SRA-258748 The IBM XIV SRA does not support compressedvolumes created on XIV storage systems (version 11.6 orlater).

Currently, there is no workaround or solution for thislimitation.
