Brothers Night 2008 On Friday March 14th, we celebrated Brothers Night with a St. Patrick’s day dinner of Corned Beef and Cabbage prepared by the Brothers. After dinner, the brothers performed skit’s which had everyone laughing. The first skit was the Submarine skit which we did to honor the late Dave Morris who was well known for running it in the past. We had 27 paying guests which wasn’t very many. In spite of that, we did very well and raised over $600 for the Lodge. The Brothers who provided all of the food donated the cost to the Lodge. Table decorations donated by Monica Lund were raffled off and we made $120. Ken Johnson had the Sisters sell chances on the winner of the Toilet Paper pull and the Lodge made $27 on that. The 50/50 netted us $15.

I have posted pictures of the event on our web page, you can view them at:

Bits and Pieces Kaare Nyhus passed away on 3/2/2008, he was Karin’s husband and a member of our

Lodge since 1969. Our sincere condolences go out to Karin and family. And we received a note from the Family of Kaare Nyhus: TO HENRIK IBSEN LODGE Your kind expression of sympathy was deeply appreciated and is gratefully acknowledged. Elsie Dee Passed away on March 6th and will be missed by all. On March 5th my wife and I picked up Elsie to attend Kaare Nyhus funeral. She was in great spirits and looked real good. We talked a lot go-ing and coming home from the funeral. I took her to her door and she thanked both of us for picking her up. We will miss taking Elsie to and from LOV. She was fun to spend the 8 hours going to and from LOV. Again our condolences go out to Elsie’s family. Larry & Monica Lund I sent a reminder notice to Arthur Mikalsen, a member of our lodge, living in Florida to remind him that his contribution to The Courier Booster is expiring and he replied with payment for the year and had this to say. “Thank you for reminding me. Its good to see that the Lodge is doing well. Say hello to the OLD guard. The best of wishes to the Lodge. Arthur” From Ken Johnson; Well it happened again, our Sports Director Odd didn’t break 100 when he recently bowled with his Tuesday Night League. He was close with 99 but this reporter could not sleep if he didn’t pass it on. BTW, fair is fair, he beat me by two pins the next game. April’s Zone bowling should be fun, we just can’t lose to Garborg and brother Roy Berntsen. I told him I would bet him one beer, he said OK “one barrel” Odd, please practice ! Dear Sisters…………..Brothers night was a success, we (the brothers) can’t wait to see you top the “toilet paper roll-off” Ken

Wow! Spring really does come around again as the flowers are popping through the soil. We have a few short months until the convention and I hope the lodges have chosen their delegates. We do not have as many resolutions as in prior years, so the district will be working with the Convention Committee to plan break-out sessions. A member of Nansen, Fred Koenig, always an emotional musician, was awarded an Honorary Doctor-ate in Music Education. As he approaches 80 years young, he can still be found on Saturdays at Eltingville Lutheran Church with his family by his side. The Elt-ingville Lutheran Church "Man for All Seasons" is Fred Koenig. My second bragging rights goes to the Third Dis-trict Executive Board who spent numerous, numerous hours researching and reviewing paperwork and con-tracts, rejecting or securing the best deal we could ob-tain with Chesapeake Appalachia LLC. Over many years we have toiled at Land of the Vi-kings, the many hours of planning and working on a shoestring budget, each year reviewing the figures and hoping, “Will there be a profit, even one so slightly in the black?” Each convention we review the reports and, although we may hold our own at times, the struggle can feel endless. Someone, way more powerful than I, shone a bright light on Land of the Vikings. The 3D Ltd. Board voted and approved a 7 year leasing the sub-surface land at Land of the Vikings. I will be drafting a full letter to all of the lodges and you should receive that in a few weeks, with all the names and the amounts to the penny. But here is the abbreviated version of how this came to our attention and the steps we took. In December, LOV Chairman George Beck con-tacted me about a meeting being held at LOV to speak about the possibility of natural gas drilling with Chesa-peake Appalachia, LLC. (They are the #1 company as the largest independent producer of natural gas in the United States.) Their advanced equipment allows explo-ration for reserves of natural gas 6000+ feet deep into the earth. I drove to LOV and listened to a broker who explained the procedures and what to expect if we de-cided to sign a lease. The meeting lasted for more that 3 hours and there were about 70 local families at the meeting. The original contract was for $725.00 per acre sub-surface contract (up front payment) and a 12% roy-alty fee if they drill and find gas deposits.

I contacted my executive board, shared what I had learned, and asked them to contact people with knowl-edge of this type of work. We found a few with good suggestions on how to proceed next. We could not lo-cate our original deed, so Ken Gundersen was approved to employ a title company and research our rights on our deed. The title company went back for 100 years and found we own our land, including the mineral and gas rights on our land. This knowledge gave us the con-fidence to contact a consultant with Chesapeake Appa-lachia LLC. Josh (consultant) met with us to answer all of our questions and provided a contract, including the addendums the company previously approved, agreed upon because of our different status as a camp for our youth. We then met with a lawyer (James), asking his ad-vice on how to protect ourselves. He presented explana-tions and concerns with our signing a lease. We listened to his advice and thanked him for coming to LOV to speak with us. The executive board met and reviewed all of our documentation and developed some additional addendums we deemed important. These additional ad-dendums included: not approaching our land at certain months of the year, additional safety measures for our water and our soil, removal of the waste, protection of fees, and no step forward until the payment has been paid in full. They accepted all of our additional re-quests, stating they understand our concerns for our membership of all ages. After many meetings, phone calls and discussions researching all the different ave-nues, reviewing the pros and the cons, a 3D Ltd. meet-ing was held to discuss and answer any questions. It gives me the greatest pleasure to announce that we approved the signing of the lease for $1500.00 per acre and a 15% royalty if they drill for and find gas. The lease duration is 7 years with no re-newal option. I must say I did not sleep very much until we made our final decision, but the 3D Ltd. Board is very confi-dent we did our best for 3D Ltd., the Third District and for Land of the Vikings. Again, the gas company may never come back to us to drill on our land, but our sub-surface contract figures are overwhelming and the windfall is awe-inspiring. I just couldn’t wait to share this exciting news with all of you. We will receive a check for $227,000.00 + in less than 90 days. A bright light is shining over LOV.
