Afif Ben YedderFounder“We want to portray the new image of Africa. It is up to us all, each and every one of us to improve the image of the continent. We want to promote our culture and our civilisation, to defend the legitimate interests and rights of all Africans and to continue always our quest for more unity, freedom and democracy. All of us have a responsibility to act now and make a difference. We need to make the voice of Africa heard loud and clear.”

A graduate of HEC Paris and Harvard Business School, Afif Ben Yedder was the Managing Director of Jeune Afrique in Paris between 1962 and 1971. He moved to London in 1971 to launch Africa magazine and then a number of international publications in English and in French. Our Story

Omar Ben Yedder Group Publisher and Managing Director “Our group has a passion for Africa and the benchmarks we are trying to establish within the group are to report Africa with professional excellence and deep historical as well as cultural insight; and to present a balanced analytical foresight of its future. We aim to do our best consistently and also to be the best in what we do. These are possibly the two major philosophical attributes which we try and instil within the group. By this process, we end up showing that what comes out of Africa - and from African minds - can match the world’s best.”

Omar joined the IC Group in March 2003, working across various departments.Having previously been an Associate Vice President in the Equity Finance team at Merrill Lynch, Omar brought a new and dynamic approach to IC Publications. He helped launch African Banker magazine and also the events department. He holds an Honours degree in Languages and Economics and a chartered management accountant qualification.

There was once a time when the international business person, traveling to any major city in West Africa, would only have the option of booking a business-class

hotel room with one of the big international groups. That has all changed now with the launch of the Azalaï group’s hotels in West Africa, the first indigenous African business-class hotel chain.

It is the dream of the Malian businessman, Mossadeck Bally, who

38 New African march 2016

All-star African hospitality

began the Azalaï group in 1994 and opened his first hotel in Mali’s capital Bamako.

“Before that I was in the family’s import-export business, mainly trading in foodstuffs such as rice, sugar, milk and edible oils throughout West Africa,” he explains.

Prior to joining his family’s company he had studied business in both France and the US. He identified the lack of business class hotels in West Africa and decided

this provided a huge opportunity. “I started my own company,

Société Malienne de Promotion Hôtelière (SMPH), and we began operations by purchasing the Grand Hotel in Bamako,” he says. The venerable Grand Hotel had suffered from years of under-investment, but Bally’s company breathed new life into the established.

“We completely refurbished it with a loan from the International Finance Corporation (IFC), and that’s how Azalaï started.

Azalaï Hotels Group is the first African hotel chain group in the West Africa region, providing direct employment to about 700 persons,

and supporting over 3,500 jobs indirectly. Stephen Williams reports.

Region & country focused: presenting and analysing opportunities and challenges within a region or country

Sector focused: discussing the latest developments and needs of specific economic sectors

Inter-regional and South-South cooperation focused: discussing and putting forward inter-Arab, inter-African and South-South cooperation for policy alternatives in the economic, political and social spheres

Speaker Management

Getting the right mix of speak-ers is fundamental. We have the know-how and the contacts to get them. Our researchers will identify, invite and follow up with the speakers and moder-ators. We will ensure they are properly briefed and have all the relevant documentation so that they are well-prepared to conduct a dynamic and struc-tured discussion. Live events require back-up plans, and it is part of our remit to provide replacement speakers in case of unforeseen circumstances and last minute cancellations. We can also assist speakers in making their travel and accom-modation arrangements.

Participant Management

The key to a successful event is having the right participants. We have organised a number of events from small focus groups and roundtables to large events. Depending on your brief, once we identify the objectives, we will put together a target list of delegates. Through our networks and our partnerships we have a track-re-cord in bringing together high-lev-el participants. We will ensure the right mix of stakeholders from across business, politics and civil society. Our experienced team will also follow up on a regular basis with all invitees via phone/fax and constant email updates to make sure the required target is achieved. We also assist partici-pants by providing them with visa support letters and information related to logistical issues such as hotels and transport.

Sponsorship

We are able to assist you in generating sponsorship revenue. Our experienced sales team can put togeth-er sponsorship packages, identify potential clients and also sell these pack-ages to them.

Our services do not end there. Once sponsorship has been sold, we execute the sponsorship agree-ments to ensure that all contract clauses are delivered, guaranteeing satisfaction for all parties involved.

Logistics

From finding the right venue to negotiating pref-erential rates with hotels and airlines, organising participant transportation on the ground, setting up the premises, over-seeing AV and catering arrangements, our team can manage the event’s entire logistics by liaising and coordinating with all relevant parties, whilst saving you costs at the same time.

Our experts are here to make sure the events content is high-level, profound, engaging, stimulating and geared towards a clear objective.
