I dont blame you for questioning whether

Africa is reallyRising.News about the Ebola virus;

corruption, wars, poverty, poor leadership, thelist goes on. That may be the proof to help usunderstandAfrica IS Rising! In days gone by wewould only hear about great tragedies like the1994 genocide in Rwanda. Now Africa is in thenews almost daily albeit for some of the wrongreasons. The difference is less is being reportedmore often. While the above is true; it is not thewhole truth. BecauseAfrica is Rising, Africa isgetting a lot more press. While much of what hitsthe local paper is about the negative, the reality

is seen in the economic numbers which aregenerally good and often reported in the financialpapers and magazines. Did you know:

Africa is a very big place.It is the secondlargest continent in the world. The U.S., China,Europe and India can all fit within Africas boarderswith room left over.

The African population is growing faster than

any other continent. By 2050, Africa will have twobillion people, 25% of the worlds working force

and Lagos-Ibadan will be the largest city in theworld. Currently, over half the population is 17 andyounger.

In Africa, Christianity increased from about

5 million adherents in 1900 to over 450 million by

2000.It will soon become the largest sender ofmissionaries in the world.

Africa has 60% of the worlds potential

farmland and in addition to oil, diamonds,gold and other minerals Africa has the largestuncultivated farmable land in the world.

Training Thousands to Reach Millions

Africa is rising! It has over 60% of the worlds potential farmland,and the African population is projected to top two billion by 2050,growing faster than any other continent.

Within the last two decades, Africa has become

an exporter to global markets.Communications,

road, rails and air travel are beginning to takeshape as the continent begins moving its wealthfrom country to country. This will have the effectof increasing a middle class that will become thebedrock for the expansion of Africas economy.

China and India are pouring billions into Africato reap the benefit from it vast mineral wealthand potential markets. While they and others arecommitted to exploit the African market, it is up

to the church to partner with the African Christian

community to help fuel the next great wave of

missionary zeal.

Effects of EbolaBy Renita Reed-Thomson, Business as Mission

Thank you for the continual prayers forour sub region in the face of the Ebola

outbreak. As you may be aware, we havetwo farm sites in Western Liberia (BomiCounty) that have been hardest hit by theEbola virus.

Three days after the State ofEmergency was announced, I had to rushin with food and medications. Because

the area isquarantinedour peoplecannot go back

and forth totransact normalbusiness. Hence,a breakdownof economicactivitiesresulting inskyrocketing pricesof basic commodities,shortage of goods,and

no adequate medicalfacilities.The hospital where treatment is usually done

is closed because of the Ebola outbreak. A goodnumber of hospitals were hard hit and lost anumber of health workers at the initial outbreak ofEbola. Consequently, most of these hospitals closedtheir doors. It is only now that some of them arereopening their doors.

I needed $500 last Saturday to take more foodand medication to our two sites in Bomi. With this

additional money on hand, I will be able to takesome relief again soon. Thanks for your prayers andsupport.

These days, talk of Africabrings immediate questions

about the Ebola virus. As Iwrite this, Ebola has not yetbeen discovered in Kenya,although the World HealthOrganization (WHO) warnsthat Kenya is at high riskbecause it is such a hub forAfrica. But the landscapedoes keep changing. I checkBBC now every couple ofhours to keep track of what

is happening with this virus.I just now went to checkand see that the first casewas discovered in Senegal.Yesterday, the WHO reportedthat the number of casesmay get as high as 20,000,

may take six months to eradicate, and may cost asmuch as $489 million dollars.

What is interesting is what the US is learning

about Ebola from the three evacuated missionaries- they are learning that there are some similaritiesbetween Ebola and Cholera. A major part of theissue is the loss of electrolytes due to constantdiarrhea and vomiting. These electrolytes keepthe heart beating regularly and without it cancause a heart attack. If people can get on a salinesolution early, have their electrolytes monitoredand replaced, there is good hope of recovery.Unfortunately, in countries like Liberia, that is easiersaid than done.

All of this reminds us that our lives are not ourown but we are called for a purpose. We dontmake decisions out of fear or out of a desire to staysafeAnd I have learned that Gods will is not alwaysto keep us safe or alive, but never-the-less, we stilltrust. Please continue to pray for the Ebola crisis, forthe challenges of Al-Shabab in Kenya, for the workof the ICM Church-based Business as Mission, andfor my travel throughout this time.

Africa and the 10/40 WindowThe 10/40 window is located 10 degrees north to

40 degrees north and from the west side of Africa to

the east side of Indonesia.It contains 57+ countriesand 60% of the worlds population. The majority

of people in the 10/40 window have little, if any,opportunity to hear of the Good News. The 10 degreenorth also roughly marks the separation in Africa ofthe Muslim north and the Christian south. In countriesacross Africa it represents a flash point of religion,ethnicity, and economy. While much is made of thereligious conflict in the region it is well to point outthat often this is simply a veneer over a deeper issue:economy. Muslims along this line find themselveson the losing end as the great Sahara desert moves

further and further south. In the past these mostlynomadic groups found enough rain and grass to eekout a few crops or sustain their herds of goats, cowsand camels. But as the desert moves south so arethose in the region who are dependent upon the landfor their livelihood. This brings the two great religions

into conflict, each claiming the poor land for theirown survival. While many in Christendom cry battle, itmight be more appropriate to cry for love. The answer

is not war and destruction but love and care.Matthew25 does not talk about religion, it speaks of acts oflove without regard to religion. Our task, as Christiansis not to convert Muslims, but to love Muslims (andeveryone else). Amy Carmichael said, you can give

without loving, but you cannot love without giving.For Africans, the 10thdegree parallel is not a window,but a door through which the love of Christ shouldrush. Our task is one of love, Gods task is one ofsalvation. The call of ICM is to equip Christian leaderswith the greatest weapon of all time, the love of Christ.
