HOW DOES APPLE “REUSE” AND “RECYCLE” WORK?

• Equipment may qualify for reuse if it has monetary value and can be resold in the secondary electronics market.

• Glass and metal can be reprocessed for use in new products

• With materials reprocessing and component reuse, Apple often achieves a 90 percent recovery rate by weight of the original product

• Apple recyclers do not dispose of hazardous electronic waste in solid-waste landfills or incinerators

SUSTAINABILITY OF IPHONE

• The second generation iPad was 33% thinner than the first

• The packaging on the iPhone 4 is 42% smaller than the original iPhone

• They attempt to use recyclable materials in their products and packaging where possible

• All of Apple’s products exceed ENERGY STAR specifications, which include standards for energy efficiency, energy savings, and quality

POLLUTED WASTE IN CHINA

• A Chinese environmental group has singled out Apple for accusing the company’s Chinese suppliers of discharging polluted waste and toxic metals into surrounding communities and threatening public health

• The group said Apple suppliers often “fail to properly dispose of hazardous waste” and that 27 of the suppliers had been found to have environmental problems

• Apple vowed to improve its environmental standards for suppliers and acknowledged that a number of its suppliers have failed to properly keep track of wastewater pollution and other emissions

• Apple officials also said they would take environmental contamination into future considerations

CONCLUSION

• We use out plant’s resources responsibly and recycle them responsibly

• We have a responsibility to conserve those resources so future generations will have them

• Not just more material efficient and last longer before they need to be replaced
