Citation preview

For a third year, the Idaho Nonprofit Center enlisted the help of Strategies 360 to get the word out about Ida-

ho Gives and engage more donors than ever before. The Idaho Nonprofit Center set a goal of raising

$1 million dollars in 2015. While many thought hitting this mark was a natural progression after reaching

$780,000 the previous year, the enormity of that goal should not be underestimated. It’s easy to think that

there’s nowhere to go but up. But experienced communicators know that it’s difficult to keep people’s

attention year after year, create renewed interest on the part of media organizations, and engage new

supporters.

Again this year, our primary tasks were to refresh and grow the Idaho Gives brand with creative elements that

could be used in a variety of mediums to reach different segments of our target audiences.

In addition to the brand elements to promote the media campaign, Strategies 360 once again produced the

Idaho Gives public service announcement for television and worked closely with Journal Broadcast Group to

produce a radio PSA for statewide distribution. Since so many media organizations have web platforms that

they actively direct listeners and viewers to, we also produced banner ads and distributed those with the tradi-

tional PSAs. This year, we designed advertisements for print media, which were used by a number of news-

papers. We were also successful in placing PSA’s on radio and television in all the major media markets and

had luck convincing even those outlets who weren’t sponsors to provide some pro-bono air time. Considering

nearly half of all visitors to IdahoGives.org came directly to the site, we feel

confident that the PR and earned media efforts through traditional outlets proved fruitful.

We were also responsible with garnering earned media for Idaho Gives. We have included in this report sam-

ple news clippings from the campaign, but we estimate that we were able to get approximately 419 media hits

online, on the air, and in print over the course of the campaign.*

In addition to traditional media, Strategies 360 managed all social media efforts. We grew the Idaho Gives

Facebook and Twitter audiences using both paid and primarily organic tactics. As you will see in the attached

report, we were able to get help from many high-profile Idahoans and organizations.

In its third year, Idaho Gives exceeded all expectations, raising nearly $1.1 million for Idaho nonprofits in one

day.

*We count each time a segment runs on TV as one hit. We count individual newspaper stories as one story

regardless of if it appears both online and in print.

Our creative team developed a fresh take on last year’s theme in an effort to rejuvenate the brand while

bringing some new themes for 2015. This year’s theme was “Be a part of something big,” along with “Giving

feels good.” Our hope was to impart light social pressure, while keeping the positive spin on the day, remind-

ing people that giving is impactful in our communities, but also personally rewarding.

In the appendix, you will find each of the pieces that our team designed:

The earned media results listed below are a result of the press releases, story pitches, and op-ed distribution that

took place throughout the Idaho Gives Campaign.

In coordination with Idaho Gives and Idaho Nonprofit Center staff, we wrote and distributed 9 press releases,

advisories or op-eds, most of these regionalized to make them more interesting to local reporters. Each of these

was followed up with phone calls and emails to pitch reporters on covering the release.

Strategies 360 produced public service announcements for radio and television, as well as pre-produced

advertisements for print and digital banner ads. These PSA’s were distributed to more than 70 media organizations

statewide in March and April. As always, this distribution was followed up by emails and phone calls to ensure the

greatest number of commercials/ads ran, free of charge, before the giving day. This year, Idaho Gives enjoyed

increased airplay of the PSA’s on television and radio, as well as on digital platforms of media organizations.

It’s difficult to track how many stations ran the PSA’s, and the quantity of commercials that were aired. However, a

reasonable estimate would put the total value of free advertising received statewide at more than $300,000. As

always, Idaho Gives Media Partners committed to running PSA’s. In 2015, there were 8 new partners, and only 2

were lost from the previous year (Eastern Idaho radio and the Idaho State Journal). The partners for 2015 were:

Anecdotally, we know that we know that commercials aired on many other stations in media markets outside of the

major population centers, reaching a large number of Idahoans in the lead-up to Idaho Gives.

We grew our Facebook audience from 3,683 followers on May 1, 2014 to 4,509 followers on May 7,

2015 – a 22% increase. On Idaho Gives Day, our total reach (The number of people who saw any

activity from our page including posts, posts by other people, Page like ads, mentions, and check-ins)

was 32,600—more than double last year.

We grew our Twitter audience from 815 followers on May 1, 2014 to 1,365 followers on May 7, 2015 – a

67% increase. With more than 1,365 followers, we have enjoyed a very engaged twitter conversation

with nonprofits, individual supporters, media and influential community members throughout the lead up

to the event and on May 7.

The goal of this effort was to get local businesses and other influential community leaders to help us

spread promote Idaho Gives to their employees, customers, supporters, friends and other contacts.

Working with the Idaho Gives team, we created a business outreach document, shared spreadsheets to

track progress, and an online form where businesses could sign up to help. The organizations and

people who helped spread our messages undeniably lend credibility and generate buzz for Idaho Gives.

Strategies 360 reached out to more than 75 businesses, chambers of commerce, and other organizations across

the state to ask for help raising awareness about Idaho Gives. The following lists likely represent a fraction of the

mentions or online exposure Idaho Gives received from businesses and organizations; however, the nature of

these activities (spreading the word to their employees and business partners) meant that we were unlikely to

capture most of that activity. Thus, we are presenting a list only of those businesses we reached out to personally.

We know of many businesses who helped promote Idaho Gives because they had promoted it in the past.

Idaho Nonprofit Center Opens Registration for 2015 “Idaho Gives”

Nonprofit Organizations Across Idaho Encouraged to Register to Participate

(BOISE) – The Idaho Nonprofit Center will again shine the spotlight on Idaho’s nonprofits and help raise

needed funds by hosting the 3rd Annual “Idaho Gives,” a day of statewide charitable giving, on May 7, 2015.

Registration for nonprofits wishing to participate in this year’s event is now open. The deadline to register is

April 3, 2015.

Last year, more than $780K was raised for more than 600 different charitable causes. All nonprofits must

register with the Idaho Nonprofit Center again this year to be eligible to raise money as part of the Idaho

Gives event. Nonprofits should log on to www.idahononprofits.org to start the process.

Idaho Gives is modeled after highly successful giving days in states and cities across the country. In larger

states, millions of dollars have been raised in a single day. Idahoans throughout the state will be engaged

using a combination of traditional and new media. Social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter are crit-

ical tools in getting people, even those who don’t regularly contribute to nonprofits, to quickly and easily

make a donation to their favorite organization(s).

The event takes place online, driven by a central idahogives.org web site, where donors can learn about

and designate funds for nonprofits in a number of categories, including arts & culture, children & youth, envi-

ronment, humanitarian aid, education, animals, and religious organizations. Award pool sponsors have con-

tributed $50,000 so far in prize money, which will be distributed to nonprofits through random drawings and

daylong contests, allowing organizations and donors to multiply their donations.

The Idaho Nonprofit Center encourages any nonprofit with an IRS-certified 501(c)(3) designation to partici-

pate in the day. Idaho Gives allow nonprofits to elevate their profile, expand their online and social media

presence, call attention to the work they’re doing, and raise critical funds. Interested nonprofits can find

more information and register at the Idaho Nonprofit Center’s web site.

Idaho Gives is being sponsored by Idaho Central Credit Union, PacificSource Health Plans, and the Idaho

National Laboratory. For more information, go to www.idahogives.org, or look for Idaho Gives on Facebook

and Twitter.

Idaho Nonprofit Center Announces Prizes for

Idaho Gives 2015

Nonprofits Across Idaho Can Share in a Pool of

$55,000 Raised for Awards

(BOISE) –Generous sponsors have donated $55,000 for this year’s Idaho Gives awards pool this year. These dollars will be granted throughout the partici-pating nonprofits, giving them an extra opportunity to raise money on May 7, in addition to the donations they receive from individuals on that day. Nonprofit organizations who participate in Idaho Gives can win a share of this extra money in a variety of ways, based on both competitive and random factors.

“The awards pool is such a big part of the success of Idaho Gives,” said Janice Fulkerson, Executive Di-rector of the Idaho Nonprofit Center. “The prize pool not only injects some fun and a bit of friendly compe-tition into Idaho Gives really gives donors a great rea-son to give on May 7: no matter what size of donation they make, their gift has the potential to turn into an additional $250-$2,500. It’s very exciting!”

Similar to last year, awards will be given to those nonprofits that gather the most unique donors in sup-port of their efforts, and thus end up at the top of their respective “scoreboards”. Organizations are divided into small, medium, and large categories for this award, and the top eight places will receive award money from $250 to $2,500 each, depending on where they place.

Also back this year are the “Golden Ticket” drawings, which will occur throughout the day. These drawings carry a $1,000 award. Each hour between 7:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m., a donor’s name will be randomly se-lected and the nonprofit they supported will receive the prize. Scheduled donations are included in the Golden Ticket prizes.

Additionally, four special “5x5 Golden Ticket” draw-ings will award $500 to 5 nonprofits (one in each of the five pre-defined regions), one more than last year. The first “5x5”drawing will occur between 7:00 a.m. and 7:59 a.m. the second between 12:00 and 12:59 p.m., the third one 5:00 p.m. and 5:59 p.m. and the final between 8:00 p.m. and 8:59 p.m.

Finally, “Donor Appreciation” awards of $250 will go out for every 500 donations. Similar to the “Golden Ticket” drawings, these awards will go to the nonprof-it organization that the 500th donation supported.

There is no limit to these awards—a prize will be giv-en for every 500th donation made on May 7.

The Center hopes to build on the success of last year’s statewide giving blitz, which raised more than $782,000 for hundreds of nonprofits in a 24-hour pe-riod.

The award pool includes generous donations from the following:

O’Gara Foundation

George and Bev Harad

A.J. and Susie Balukoff

J.R. Simplot Company

Idaho Falls Steel Potatoes

Donald and Marcia Liebich Fund

Idaho Power

Doug Colwell, HD Insurance

Idaho Stampede

“We are very excited at the diversity of nonprofits who have signed up for Idaho Gives this year, and that a huge number of new nonprofits are participating in this great day for Idaho,” said Janice Fulkerson, Execu-tive Director of the Idaho Nonprofit Center, which is presenting the event. “There really is a nonprofit cause for every donor. Donors will find causes that support needy families, help animals without homes, organiza-tions that provide cultural experiences we cherish, and everything in between!”

Last year, Idaho Gives raised more than $780,000 for causes across Idaho, with donors from each of the 44 counties pitching in to help. Modeled after highly successful giving days in other states and cities, the organ-izers hope to see a similarly successful event this year, in terms of increased donations. Today Marks 3rd Annual Idaho Gives

More Than 675 Nonprofit Causes Raise Money in 24-Hour Statewide Giving Blitz

(BOISE) – Hundreds of nonprofits are hoping their hard work over the last few months will result in success at the end of today’s Idaho Gives event. In its first two years, Idaho Gives raised more than $1.2 million for Idaho nonprofits, with support from tens of thousands of Idahoans. Event organizers and nonprofits are opti-mistic that Idahoans will turn out again this year to support the nonprofit organizations that provide essential human services, arts and cultural opportunities, care for animals, and perform many other functions that citi-zens in our state rely on.

Nonprofit organizations have been busy reaching out to supporters new and old—via direct mail, email, web sites, and social media—to drive traffic and donations to idahogives.org for the upcoming giving day. To gen-erate extra excitement, the Idaho Nonprofit Center will giving away extra award dollars throughout the day from a pool of money donated by generous Idaho companies and individuals. The event kicked off at 12:00am and ends tonight at 11:59pm. Final results will be available Friday morning.

3rd Annual Idaho Gives Raises Nearly $1.1 Million for Idaho Nonprofits

$1,083,365 Raised in 24-Hour Online Giving Campaign

(BOISE) – For the third consecutive year, thousands of donors stepped up in a big way for the nonprofits par-ticipating in this year’s Idaho Gives event, exceeding the previous year’s totals by more than $300,000. All told, Idahoans raised nearly $1.1 million. In just 24 hours, 8,905 donors logged on to idahogives.org to make donations to their favorite charities. In addition to the money raised directly from donors, the Idaho Nonprofit Center and event sponsors awarded more than $55,000 to participating organizations over the course of the day. (The total amount raised includes both individual donations and the award dollars granted by the Idaho Nonprofit Center) .

“We are once again blown away by the generosity Idahoans showed yesterday, and for what these dollars will mean for so many organizations across our great state,” said Janice Fulkerson, Executive Director of the Ida-ho Nonprofit Center, which presents the event. “We can’t thank our sponsors, or the donors who gave, enough for the impact they have had on our state in this one day.”

Groups promoted their participation in Idaho Gives to supporters new and old—via direct mail, email, web sites, and social media—to drive traffic and donations to idahogives.org. More than 675 nonprofit causes par-ticipated in this year’s event.

This year’s event raised 38% more than the event last year, which totaled more than $782,862 in donations. Also of note, 8,905 donors gave 15,387 donations to this year’s effort. Fulkerson noted that given the impres-sive growth and widespread impact of Idaho Gives since the inaugural event in 2013, Idaho Gives will once again return on May 5, 2016.

Idaho Gives 2015 was sponsored by Idaho Central Credit Union, PacificSource Health Plans and the Idaho National Laboratory.

Idaho Gives Guest Opinion Piece

It’s fair to say that we live in a fairly conservative state, where the values of independence, freedom, and self-reliance tend to shape public policy. Regardless of where you find yourself on the political spectrum, there’s no denying that government in Idaho at the state and local levels is relatively small compared to many places. Where government services and the social safety net are limited, a vibrant nonprofit sector, like the one we have an Idaho, fills the void, touching most people’s lives in a myriad of ways.

Chances are, you interact with Idaho’s nonprofits regularly as you go through life. This weekend, you might visit a museum, go to a play, or attend church, thanks to the nonprofit organizations that make those activities possible. When you check out books at the library, you can tip your hat to the nonprofit foundation that pur-chased those books and supports your library. Perhaps you’re planning to send your child to a nonprofit day-care or a summer camp. If you’re a senior or have relatives who receive hand-delivered meals, tax prepara-tion assistance, or participate in classes or activities offered by local nonprofits, then you know the work of nonprofits. And maybe you have a four-legged, furry friend in your house, courtesy of a nonprofit animal group.

Frankly, it’s hard to imagine life in Idaho without everyday encounters with the thousands of nonprofits that serve and strengthen our communities. Nearly every week, at every stage of life, almost everyone in Idaho benefits from having a nonprofit fill a need that no other sector of society can or will address. Without these organizations, the fabric of our communities would quickly become threadbare.

A few years ago, we decided to celebrate and elevate the nonprofit sector as a whole, recognizing that it’s all of these organizations together that improve the mental, physical, and spiritual health of our cities and towns. It is this vast constellation of organizations, what former President George H.W. Bush referred to as “a thou-sand points of light,” that we seek to both honor and support with an event called Idaho Gives.

Debuted in 2013, Idaho Gives is a 24-hour giving blitz that taps into the generous spirit and sense of connect-edness of Idaho’s citizens. Once again this year, more than 500 nonprofits from every corner of the state will be participating in Idaho Gives—raising awareness of the vital work they do and asking you to help in fulfilling their mission by lending financial support.

Last year, we raised nearly $800,000 together in a single day; this May 7, we expect that as awareness of Ida-ho Gives continues to grow, the total number of dollars Idahoans give to nonprofits will also grow. The impact we make in a single day is tremendous, not to mention the message we send about our nonprofit sector: these organizations matter and we believe in and support them.

For the thousands of Idahoans who have participated in this event the last two years, the decision hasn’t been whether to give, but rather how many groups to support. To see so many groups at idahogives.org, spanning so many different categories, and doing so much good, it can be hard to limit your giving to just one group. The good news is you don’t have to pick only one. Just a $10 donation can turn into thousands of dollars for the nonprofits you support. On May 7, Idaho Gives. Will you?
