PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

April 2019

Happy Spring, Volunteers!

Your Board has been working on a number of projects,

which I would like to share with you. The new website is

up and running, so check it out. There are still a few

editing problems, but we hope to correct those reasonably

soon. Many Thanks to John Grizzard, who has spent way

too many hours working in the background.

We are working on a process for distributing trading cards

for our actively visiting volunteer pets with up to date

health certificates. We will have a tiered scale

corresponding to number of regular visits. The original

commitment is to visit once a week, but there any number

of different schedules to be taken into consideration.

Barbara Digges will be the contact person. Watch for

more info to come. Distribution will be at the October

meeting.

As to the October meeting, we are having a picnic on a

Sunday afternoon. So mark your calendars Pets on

Wheels appreciation meeting on Sunday October 20,

2019 at Scottsdale Railroad Park. All pets are invited,

but must be leashed. Stay tuned for more information.

Due to changing conditions at Via Linda, the July general

has been canceled. There are many volunteers away for

the Summer. Also, it is always hot or stormy, so we will

forgo July this year.

Please respond to Elaine’s reminders to renew your pet’s

health certificate. She sends them out thirty days ahead,

so you should have time.

Many Many thanks for your dedication to visiting with

your pet.

Peggy

Sincerely,

Peggy

Meet Jenny & Abby

Jenny Lidback needed to find a canine companion for her aging dog Sam. Drawn to the shelter's description for Abby, "she's mellow", she asked her mother to check her out since Jenny was out of town. Her Mom thought Abby, a Schnauzer mix, was very cute, but was concerned that she'd been in the shelter for a while because she was very shy and kept her tail under her legs. Little was known about Abby--she had been wandering the streets of Atlanta and appeared to have recently had puppies, although none were found. She was believed to be 2 years old. Well, Jenny took Abby home---and Abby has scarcely left her side since. During the first several weeks in her home, Abby's uncropped tail remained tucked under her 24/7. Jenny patiently moved the tail outwards, and eventually it stayed untucked for good. After several months, Jenny began to think that Abby would make a good therapy dog. As fate would have it, Jenny met Diane Bykowski and Zoe when Jenny was taking her Mom to the Piper Cancer Center. Soon Diane and Zoe met Abby; Diane suggested that Abby and Jenny volunteer with Pets on Wheels. They became a therapy team nearly three years ago, visiting Fountain View Village and the Piper Cancer Center. They've also attended a number of POW special events. Over a year ago, Abby began coughing, stopped eating, and had very little energy. Abby was diagnosed with Valley Fever. She was so weak that Jenny sometimes had to carry her. She eased back into visiting, and now, a year later, she is "all clear."

Abby rarely strays far from Jenny, accompanying her when travelling and playing golf. Abby loves riding in the golf cart with Jenny. Abby becomes very anxious when Jenny is out of sight and will sometimes engage in "bad dog" behavior. She has been known to open every cabinet in the kitchen while Jenny is gone. Jenny, originally from Peru, is a semi-retired professional golfer on the LPGA tour. She won a "major" several years ago and was ranked as high as #17 in the world!! This May Jenny will be competing in the U.S. Senior Women's Open in Pinehurst, N.C. She also enjoys hiking, biking, horseback riding, pickle ball and yoga. If Abby could talk, Jenny thinks she'd gaze adoringly at her and profess, "I love you, Mom." Jenny shared that "being part of Pets on Wheels in one of the most rewarding things

I've ever done. My Dad passed away from Alzheimer's and my Mom has had breast cancer, so my visits with Abby bring happiness to me and a lot of other people. I hope, one day when I'm older, someone with a dog comes to visit me!"

Abby and Jenny greet a

resident at Fountain View

Village.

Successful Arizona Gives Day 2019

For the fifth year, Pets on Wheels participated in the Arizona Gives giving campaign, along with more than 700 other Arizona non-profits. We greatly exceeded this years' goal of $3000. Donations to POW through the Gives site, Paypal and checks totaled $5265. In addition POW was awarded a $500 cash award for having the most pre-scheduled donations in the "micro" organization category. A special thanks to those volunteers who prescheduled their donations. After fees are deducted we

expect that we will net approximately $5600!!! We are most grateful to the 68 donors, including 29 POW volunteers who donated on Gives Day.

Special thanks go out to Diane Bykowski, Zoe, and Mia for championing POW on Facebook, Nancy Mauer for matching the donations made by her family and friends, Kathy Homes who donated in memory of her dog Missy, and to Barbara Digges for again leading our Arizona Gives participation.

Rainbow Bridge

Sadly, we report these good dogs recently crossed the Rainbow Bridge.

Tucker, a 9 year old Cavalier King Charles, beloved companion of Sharon Philips. Tucker joined POW in 2014, made 104 visits to Vi Silverstone and Cortney's Place as well as attending events with big buddy Tallalulah, a Bermese Mountain Dog.

Scout, a Cavalier King Charles, family member of Louise Price. Scout had been a POW volunteer since 2012 and made 153 visits to the Piper Cancer Center.

Missy, a Golden Retriever, dearest companion of Kathy Homes. Missy retired in 2017 and was inducted to the Pets on Wheels Hall of Fame. Missy had made more than 500 visits since 2008. She assisted Kathy in evaluating new volunteers and dogs and was a big favorite with all who met her---especially children.

Retired

These good dogs have recently hung up their bandanas and red leashes.

Boone, a Golden Retriever is the partner of Peggy Eischen. Boone became a POW volunteer in 2014, making more than 484 visits, most recently to Piper Cancer Center, STARS and Sunrise Middle School. He is now a member of the POW Hall of Fame.

Dash, a Cavalier King Charles, volunteered with good buddy Suzanne Watson. Since 2016 they made over 70 visits to Vi Silverstone.

Welcome Back!! We are delighted that Jake, a Cavalier King Charles, and Jill Neitzke have returned to the area and are visiting at Vi Grayhawk and Life Care.

More News and Notes

Some of us just know him as the "T-shirt guy". He's at every meeting, with his table of POW tees and polos. He's Glenn Zellmer husband of POW President, Peggy Eischen. He's also the set-up guy for many of our events. Glenn will be retiring soon, after 31 years with the City of Scottsdale.

Many of you remember long time volunteer Kathy Sins and her Three Amigos. Sadly, Kathy passed way last year from lung cancer. In addition to being a dedicated POW volunteer Kathy, was also a very accomplished ceramic artist. Many of her works will be on display (and for sale) at the Wild Cow Gallery in Superior, AZ for most of the month of May. Opening nite for the show is Friday, May 10th.

Health Alert: Xylitol in Peanut Butter

Most peanut butter is safe, but some can be deadly. Recently, some peanut butter manufacturers switched to using the sweetener xylitol. Xylitol is a sugar substitute often found in sugar-free products like chewing gum, toothpaste, breath mints, chewable vitamins and baked goods. It is safe for

people, but toxic to dogs. Xylitol consumption causes a rapid release of insulin in dogs, which results in an equally rapid and profound decrease in blood sugar levels. and can be life threatening if left

untreated. This condition, scientifically known as hypoglycemia, can occur as quickly as 10-to-60 minutes after eating xylitol. Xylitol poisoning is easy to avoid. Check the label of the peanut butter and any other product you plan on feeding your dog for xylitol, and keep xylitol products out of their dogs’ reach. If you think your dog has eaten xylitol, contact your veterinarian immediately, and keep an eye out for symptoms of xylitol poisoning, such as weakness, collapse, staggering,

lack of coordination, and seizures
