IDU Product DescriptionOverview
2 OverviewThe indoor section consists of one IDU.
The IDU consists of baseband interfaces for data and management, two BB/Modemunits, a Controller unit, an Alarm Restitution Unit and a Fan unit. A single coaxial IF cable
connecting the BB/Modem unit with a very compact outdoor transceiver located close to
the antenna.
An unprotected 1+0 system consists of one assembly equipped with only one
BB/Modem unit; a 1+1 system consists of an assembly equipped with two BB/Modem
units.
Each BB/Modem unit is connected to the outdoor unit through a single coaxial cable
where main signal, indoor-outdoor service data and outdoor power supply are sent
together. The indoor unit is totally independent of the RF band chosen for the outdoor
unit, making the system very flexible and easy to deploy.
The STM-1 interface can be either electrical or optical.
Figure 2 shows the 1+0 IDU configurations.

Figure 4 Indoor Section Block Diagram
Figure 4 shows the IDU and interfaces from a functional point of view as weel as the
functional parts of the I/O, Modem/IF, and power supply modules. The IDU comes with
the standard I/O facility which can be upgraded. In addition, the Modem/IF function is
modular. This allows the addition of a second Modem to support protection or ring archi-
tectures. The power supply is similarly modular too.
The major functions of the IDU can be summarized as follows:
– I/O Processing - The IDU comes with a standard I/O facility that includes support for
up to 16xE1 and 2x100Base-TX user payloads, 2x100Base-TX for SNMP, and voice
orderwire. Moreover, 1 x STM-1, can be added. The IDU architecture is flexible and
allows for the future addition of other I/O types.
– Switch/Framing - The IDU includes an Ethernet Switch and a proprietary Framer that
are designed to support 1+1 protection switching, ring architecture routing, and
overall network control functions.
– Network Processor - The IDU includes a Network Processor which performs SNMP
and Network Management functions.
– Modem/IF - The IDU Modem performs forward-error-correction (FEC) encoding,
PSK/QAM modulation and demodulation, equalization, and FEC decoding func-
tions. The IF chain provides a 350 MHz carrier and receives a 140 MHz carrier. The

IDU Product Description Functional description
built-in multiplexer function resides in the Modem/IF Module. Two modems can be
used for 1+1 protection or ring architectures.
– Power Supply - The IDU power supply accepts 48 Vdc and supplies the IDU and
ODU with power. A second redundant power supply may be added as an optional
module.
– For the STM-1 configuration, a user rate clock is recovered from clock recovery
NCO and provided to the STM-1 I/O card.
The Modem Processor and its associated RAM, ROM, and peripherals control
Modem/IF operation. The IDU interfaces the ODU to receive and provide modulated Tx
and Rx waveforms.
The Modem modulates and demodulates of the payload/wayside/SNMP data and
forward error correction using advanced modulation and coding techniques. By means
of the all-digital processing used, the Modem implements strong modulation and forward
error correction coding to minimize the number of bit errors and optimize the radio and
network performances. The Modem also scrambles, descrambles and interleaves/deinterleaves the data
stream in accordance with Intelsat standards to ensure modulation efficiency and resil-
ience to sustained burst errors. The modulation will vary by application, data rate, and
frequency spectrum. The highest order modulation mode supported is 128 Quadrature
Amplitude Modulation (QAM).
The IDU also provides the physical interface for the user payload and network manage-
ment. In the transmit mode, the Framer merges user payload with radio overhead-
encapsulated network management data. This combined data stream is transmitted
without any loss of user bandwidth. In the receive mode, the Framer separates the
combined data stream received from the Modem. The IDU supports Scalable Ethernet
data rates, such as 25 or 50 Mbps via the 100BaseT data interface port. The IDUprovides network management data on 10 Mbps ports accessible via the 10/100BaseTX
port. The Central Processor Unit (CPU) provides the embedded control and network
element functionality of the OAM&P. The CPU also communicates with other functions
within the IDU for configuration, control, and status monitoring. The CPU passes appro-
priate status information to the IDU front panel display.
The power supply converts -48 Vdc to the DC voltage levels required by each compo-
nent in the system.
The following table summarizes the main functions performed by each unit.
Unit Performed Logical function Note
Controller unit • IDU programming and supervision
• NMS management (SNMP)
• Alarm remotization (input and Putput)
Master IO unit • Process User Payload

Master Modules. Standard 2 and Enhanced2 Master Modules are over-the-air compat-
ible with the already supported Master IO Modules.
Here follows the list of the main differences of both the new Modules with respect to the
Standard and Enhanced Modules, respectively. – Different Ethernet Switch (the same switch used in the 42E1 Master Module is
adopted). This resulted in enhanced QoS capabilities.
– Voice Order Wire Enhancements: the new Modules support party line VOW in
addition to the point-to-point mode previously supported. The party line mode was
already supported for the 42E1 Master IO Module. Two operating modes are sup-
ported: point-to-point and party line. The party line mode allows the voice traffic to
be sent to both east and west links if so selected by the user. When the party line
mode is selected, the handset's earpiece is fed summed voice data from both the
east and west links.
3.3 Enhanced GigE Master IO Module
This module is the same as the GigE Master IO Module with the features of the STM-1
Mux/Demux.

If Mux/Demux option is not used the STM1 is transparently transported. In this case the
IDU is a pure transport, no RST termination is performed: this is the only case supported
by SVR 1.0 (see Figure 8).
g The Mini IO module with STM1 interface can not be equipped when the 42xE1
master module is present . As a consequence:
– The Mux/Demux option is not applicable to the 42E1 Master module.
– It is not possible to transport the STM1 from line side to the radio side when
42E1 master module is used. Modes that include the STM1 rate can be config-

ured but they reserve an STM1 channel over the air that can not be managed
line-side.
Figure 8 STM1 payload processing block (no RST termination)
From SVR 1.1 the Mux/Demux option is available. This option requires the Expanded
Master IO module. The only structure that can be managed via Mux-Demux is TUG3-
VC12 (Asynchronous mapping) and the entire frame (63VC12) is completely termi-nated. This means that there is no pure SDH Add/Drop capability because the frame
over the air is not STM1 but it is a proprietary frame. Consequently this application has
no RST, nor MST regeneration processing, but the line-side termination is implemented.
STM1 clock is not transported over the air.
Mixed TUG3 structures are not supported.

IDU Product DescriptionFeatures
STM-1 Mux/Demux Option (From SVR 1.1)
– Provides for a STM-1 Terminal Mux/Demux capability
– It can Mux/Demux up to 63 x E1 from an STM-1 signal
– Performance monitoring via WebGUI and SNMP – Only the front-panel STM-1 signal may be routed to the STM-1 Mux/Demux
• E1s to be aggregated across multiple IDU nodes must be transmitted over the air as
E1s with the final IDU performing the STM-1 Mux/Demux
The SDH Regenerator Section Overhead bytes are processed as follows (line side,
incoming IDU):
– J0 - Regenerator Section Trace message sent on Tx, and received on Rx. The Rx
Path Trace message is compared to an expected message and an Alarm is raised
if they differ.
– E1 - Not used, but supportable based on interoperating equipment.
– F1 - Not used, but supportable based on interoperating equipment. – DCC1-3 - Not used, but supportable based on interoperating equipment.
The SDH Multiplex Section Overhead bytes are processed as follows (line side,
incoming IDU):
– E2 - Not used, but supportable based on interoperating equipment.
– DCC4-12 - Not used, but supportable based on interoperating equipment.
The SDH Path Section Overhead bytes are processed as follows (line side, incoming
IDU):
– J1 - Path Trace message sent on Tx, and received on Rx. The Rx Path Trace
message is compared to an expected message and an Alarm is raised if they differ.
– C2/V5 - Path Label. Transmitted C2 is always 02h (TUG). Transmitted V5 is either
00h (unequipped if VC is not in channel map) or 02h for Asynchronous mapping (not
configurable by the User). Received C2/V5 are monitored and alarms raised accord-
ingly.
The not used outgoing line side SOH Bytes are set to "0".
