These famous words of William Shakespeare have their own value in this age as the trend of the professionals in the current days is extending their vocation synchronizing with humanitarian technology challenges. Naturally we have to play in different roles not only constricted with our routine part but also to broaden the scenes of services to wider spectrum. Of course, technology has the potential to transform the way we address some of the world’s toughest challenges. The rapid growth of new and lower-cost technologies creates a fertile opportunity for technological innovation in the service of humanity. For this we have to stay with opportunities to develop solutions so as to provide better and more effective aid to those who need it.

In fact, currently we live in an era of great changes where we are mere players in the stage entering through different doorways to serve the humanity authentically. Of course, serving the humanity is a divine process. The ancient Indian philosophy is ‘vasudhaika kutumbakam’ (the whole earth as one family) and ‘manava seva madhava seva’ (service to humanity is service to god) and that too through ‘nishkama karma’ (actions without expectation of reward or recognition or a return). Swami Vivekananda went one step further and preached ‘daridranarayana seva’, which means serving the poor. It was also said by wise people ‘helping hands are better than praying lips’. The primary need for this is to join the leading minds in the development of solutions to different significant humanitarian needs. Besides, a sense of love and kindness to serve the community is an obligatory attribute. By just taking a moment to remember, that overwhelming warm feeling inside us, is just a jump start to start, a sense of feeling to serve humanity. Forever be consistent

Greetings to all members!It is my privilege to address you as the incoming

Chair of Kerala Section. I hope to continue the tone and pace set by the outgoing team and thereby keeps up the vibrancy of the activities of the Section.

A major event in March was the Region 10 Sections Meet held in the first week in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Yogyakarta is an ancient part of central Java, with several examples of the Javan and Buddhist sacred architecture. The active volcano, Mount Merapi, formed the background of the town of Yograkarta. The meeting was also incidentally an opportunity to experience the rich culture and geography of Java.

All sections in Region 10 took part in the meeting, together with the Executive Committee and other leaders of the Region. Kerala section, which was being awarded the Distinguished Large Section 2009 award during the meeting, was asked to make a presentation of its best practices. The presentation was well received by the audience.

The meeting also had separate training sessions for the new and senior Section Chairs of the Region, which emphasized the different ways sections could utilize the facilities of IEEE.

In addition, it was an occasion for the members of the India council to meet together and chart out a plan for the future. Members of the India Council also met the senior R10 leaders including Lawrence Wong, Director; Darrel Chong, Secretary; and Janina Mazierska, former Director. The India Council Chair, K. Rajagopal, also was present during the deliberations.

The Third ExeCom of Kerala Section for 2011 is scheduled to be conducted at the Section office at Thiruvananthapuram on 10th April 2011. It is expected to be attended by various officials of the section, societies, affinity groups and students. A number of programmes are proposed to be planned at all levels. All members are requested to visit the events calendar of the Section which is being populated with details of events.

to make this a part within us just like breathing. Always we don’t think about breathing but without it we would not exist.

Obviously, we allow our light to shine brightest when we serve others. ‘Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented and fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be?’ Think on this path. The explanation will realize us to do something more as we are here to serve and guide us to opt a way to incorporate solutions to the challenges that exist in the grass root level of the society. It is explicable in the human condition that in order to rectify an imbalance we often veer to the extreme opposite for a time but eventually we succumb to a healthy balance. To start with, this is a new dynamic endeavour bringing together all extremes especially development, health and technology experts under a common platform to achieve the goal for which IEEE forms a sturdy foundation for us.

Prima facie, we have ‘to learn to fully care for ourselves first, in order that we might fully care for others. Learn to love ourselves first, so that we may fully understand loving others. Learn to forgive ourselves first, that we might learn to forgive others. Not judging others, lest we be judged – self judgment, as in fully serving ourselves, so that we may fully serve others.’ Normally a state of selfishness separates us from others. How it makes us think that life is all about us and that we forget other people have feelings too. It can be scary how we can go through life being so concerned with our own feelings and forgetting everyone else goes through the same struggles. Unsurprisingly we wish for just to be loved but always find it hard to extend the same to others. There are some people who in their practical life do not behave like human beings but argue with others about atheism. Some others who do not extend any help to other human beings but are always chant the name of God and try to convince others about the existence of God. Are they doing any ‘manava or madhava seva’? If a man is good by nature, he will not waste his time in imposing his views on others. They are always observant and simply do good works silently. This is a very difficult concept to put into practice. ‘A generous heart, a kind speech, and a life of service and the compassion are the things which renew humanity’.

When we think of humanitarian activities, the role of IEEE attains paramount importance. Being the world’s largest professional association

dedicated to advancing technological innovation and excellence for the benefit of humanity, its activities in this direction are exemplary. The members inspire a global community through IEEE’s highly cited publications, conferences, technology standards, and professional, educational and humanitarian activities. To find out solutions that are sustainable, scalable and adaptable to multiple environments are the needs of the day. Such problems are being tackled by IEEE. Subsequently these solutions can be implemented locally within the environmental, cultural, structural, political, and socio-economic conditions where they will be deployed. This can be commenced at any time irrespective of the need in an emergency or natural disaster. We all chose to be here to experience change for the betterment of mankind through humanitarian activities. The more attention we pay, the more we will inspire others and ourselves to be of service in a world that greatly needs our attention

Remember, ‘we are all cells in the same body of humanity’. Be kind to everyone, and show forth the affection to every organism, showing compassion and goodwill to all mankind accomplishing the benefits of technological innovations through professional alliance. Let us sing …

Four hundred random members were selected to receive one of 2,010 limited edition coins minted in celebration of reaching 400,000 IEEE members. The coins are numbered for authenticity, and feature the theme "Soaring to New Heights" on one side, and the IEEE mission statement and master brand on the other. Congratulations and thank you to all of our members who have made this milestone possible! Due to the limited run of these coins, they will not be made available to the general public.

National Institute of Techno-logy Calicut organized an Inter-national Workshop on “Advances in Automated ECG Analysis and Interpretations” on 18th and 19th February, 2011. The workshop was coordinated by Department of Electrical Engineering. The main resource person was Peter W. Macfarlane, Professor from University of Glasgow, UK. The workshop was co-sponsored by IEEE Kerala Section & Malabar Subsection.

ADVAnCES In AUTOMATED ECG AnALYSIS & ECG InTERPRETATIOn

The inauguration function started at 9:30 hrs with a prayer. After the welcome speech by Susy Thomas, Professor & Head Department of Electrical Engineering, the workshop was inaugurated by Johnson Francis, Professor & Head of Cardiology, KMCT Heart Institute & Research Centre (KHIRC) NITC Presidential address was delivered by E. Gopinathan, Director NITC. The main resource person Peter W. Macfarlane was introduced to the audience by M.V. Vaidyan, Coordinator. Peter W. Macfarlane gave a brief lecture on scope of this workshop in the present scenario. Felicitation speech was delivered by S.M. Sameer, Secretary, IEEE Malabar Subsection. Inaugural function concluded by 10:00 hrs with the vote of thanks by Subhash K.M, Coordinator.

Formal sessions started at 10:30 hrs. This workshop had discussions on the basics of electrocardiogra-phy, common ECG abnormalities and their interpretation, and the application of computer tech-niques to ECG analysis, including

population studies. The workshop also included practical sessions on ECG recording and interpreta-tions. The workshop was greatly appreciated by participants who were medical professionals, re-searchers, teachers, engineers and students. Total number of partici-pants attended was forty.

The workshop concluded at 17:30 hrs on 19th February 2011

with a question and answer session and feedback by the participants. Participants pointed out the exposure they got by the workshop and the need of conducting a further detailed discussion of automated ECG interpretation and developing simple and cost effective systems for population screening and diagnosis for a developing country like India.

conducted at Baselios Mathews II College of Engg & Technology, Sasthamkottah on Jan 20th & 25th, 2011 under the leadership of Muhammed Kasim, S B Adviser and Vishnu M T, Hub-1 driver. 12 students and two faculty joined IEEE and another 60 are ready to join IEEE. A petition forwarded to IEEE for the approval of a new Student Branch.

The IEEE SB of TKMCE organized an industrial visit on 2nd March, 2011 to Moozhiyar Power Station, the second largest hydro electric power plant in Kerala. 103 sixth semester students of Electrical and Electronics Engg attended it. It generates at present 280 MW of power per day with four generator units of 55 MW each and a fifth unit of 60 MW. The students were briefed about the various

protective systems used, the safety measures which are essential for sustaining any plant and the manual and automatic controls used for controlling the load. After lunch the students trekked further along the mountain and reached the steepest part of the penstock. The group was given a final overall view of the Sabarigiri hydro-electric project by a senior official of the plant. Altogether, as engineers, the students got an insight on how enormous is the task of generating electricity, and the reliability and safety required to ensure that not a single home in Kerala is unlit … Annual General Body Meeting & election of new Office Bearers

The keynote address gave a brief idea on “The Advances in Internal Navigation Sensors”, and “Various Systems For Aero-space”. The second session was a management session on Stress Management by M P Solomon, Director, Marthoma Counseling Centre, Thiruvananthapuram. The

PES Student Branch Chapter ActivitiesStudent Technical Awareness Conference (STAC)

A one day technical workshop on MATLAB (Matrix Laboratory) was conducted at TKM College of Engineering on 8th January 2011. The event was attended by participants from seven different colleges belonging to HUB 1. An introduction to MATLAB was given with a brief description of the command windows of

A workshop on personality development and leadership qualities was conducted on 13th March, exclusively for the IEEE members. Thomas George K, took the session. Thomas engaged the group through interactive gaming and made his points clear by asking the students to analyze each of the games that they played. He also helped the students get over their stage fright by letting each one of them come forward and face the crowd. He took session on ‘How to be a true Leader’, ‘the Power of Unity’ and ‘Public Speaking’. He made the participants realize their own inner potential. Each exercise was another lesson for the

the software, the evolution of MATLAB from C, its various applications and relevance. The second session covered various versions of MATLAB, different tips regarding writing commands to the introduction of SIMULINK with demonstration. In the practical session following the lunch break a few simple questions were given to test the participants’ foundation on the concept. The participants were instructed to find their own solutions. The sessions were handled by Sheeba O & Reshna from Dept. of ECE, Bijuna Kunju, C Usha Devi and Muhammed Shanir from EEE. The workshop concluded at 16:15 hrs. Free Medical Camp

A free medical camp was conducted as a joint venture with

the PES Chapter, Kerala Section on January 26, 2011 at Dr K P Pillai Memorial Community Hall, Erattakulangara. Nearly ten Doctors, two Pharmacists and a group of nearly 50 Student members were there to support the camp. Nearly 500 people attended the camp. One course of free medicines is supplied to the patients.Power Quiz

A Power Quiz was organized for the students of TKMCE. The prelims were conducted on the 3rd of March, 2011 and the finals were conducted on 9th March, 2011. 50 students participated in the prelims. From among the best scores, 5 pairs of students were selected for the finals. All the five teams performed to their level best

and finally the team comprising of Manu Mohanan, H4 and Emil Varkey George, H4 emerged as the winner of the quiz and the team constituted by Ajnas T, C1A and Manju C. Babu, E6B came in second. The winners received a cash award of `.1000/- on March 19, 2011 at INFLAMORA. The runners up received a cash prize of `.500/-Inflamora

The WIE affinity group of IEEE Student Branch organized a health awareness session on 15th of March 2011 at the PTA hall of the college. The awareness talk ‘Health in living’ was delivered by Dr Renuchandran MD, Prathibha Speciality Hospital. During the session, he gave a brief outline on various heart diseases and methods for diabetes control. He also suggested better ways of improving our bad lifestyle, which is the root cause of many diseases that encumber man.

I write to give you an update on your ISGT proposal. PES received many very strong proposals and after much debate, the PES leadership has decided to move forward with at least two proposals from Region 10, including your proposal. The second proposal that we have decided to move forward with is from Australia. We felt that, given the utility/practicing engineering focus of the ISGT conference, that the region can support their being an ISGT in both Australia and India. We are very excited about the opportunity to work with you and your time to make the conference a huge success.

ISGT tends to only have a few parallel sessions and we try to have at least 2 tracks that are geared towards the practising engineering/utility/industry. In this regard it is impor-tant to reach out to leaders in the Power Sector in India and your re-gion and try to get some of them to commit to participate in a panel or keynote at the event. This will generally significantly help to draw in attendance. Because this is a PES Financial Sponsored Meeting, we will have to work together on the budget.

Automobile Suspension - Going Electromagnetic Way

Automobiles are becoming more and more high-tech everyday and passenger comfort is one of the most sought after features. And the comfort factor depends to a great extent on road conditions and manufacturers are on the lookout for ways to minimise road induced discomforts. A recent approach is to use electromagnetic techniques to adjust the automobile suspension system as per the road conditions within a fraction of a second.

A car suspension system is what makes the car ride comfortably. It is made from a complex integration of struts, shock-absor-bers, springs, and sway bars, which helps keep the car from bouncing during turning and breaking. The suspension systems in use in present day cars can be classified as passive, semi-active and active. The passive suspension

systems are the most commonly used due to their low price and high reliability. But they lack the desired performance level of a modern, active suspension system, which, of course, is expensive and complex. Another disadvantage of active systems is its relatively high energy consumption. It is in this context that a technology developed by Eindhoven University of Technology of Netherlands which may revolutionize cars deserves attention. The Eindhoven suspension, as it is called, is not only electronic but also active.

It is connected to a variety of sensors and accelerometers via an on-board computer which adjusts the suspension as per the road conditions within a fraction of a second. Active suspension systems based on hydraulic systems have been around for quite some

time. But the hydraulic system cannot match the response-speed of an electromagnetic system, researchers say.

About the same size as a conventional shock absorber, the new system consists of a passive spring providing springing action, an electromagnetic actuator doing passive shock absorption, a control unit and batteries. If the batteries should fail, the system will still work as a conventional mechanical suspension.

With a peak consumption of 500 watts, the suspension uses about a quarter of the power of hydraulic systeIt also stretches its battery life by using road vibrations to generate electricity. The system tested on a simulator showed an overall ride improvement of 60%. Eindhoven University developed the system in collaboration with Swedish mechatronics company SKF, which has patented the technology and is planning its commercialisation.

The GHATECH-2011, a technical festival conducted by IEEE Student Branch of Govt. Engineering College, Sreekrishnapuram, was formally inaugurated by the Chief Guest Balaji Lakshmanan on 24th February 2011 at 10:00 hrs. Susan Abe, Principal of the Institution presided over the function. A workshop on Robotics was conducted by Balaji Lakshmanan. The workshop was attended by 17 teams of five members each. The teams were from various colleges like GEC Palakkad, GEC Thrissur, NTTF Thalassery, JTC Kovai, etc., had come for the workshop.

The technical festival had an array of invited tech-talks from a panel of brilliant minds. They were on Micro-Nano-Sciences by Anirudhan, Asst. Professor at GEC, Kozhikode, DSP and Embedded Systems by C. Jagadanand, NIT Calicut; Embedded Linux workshop by Jeffery Anthony, BOSCH; Flow Measurement, Meters-types-class by E.B. Suresh, SRE FCRI; Automobile Safety Devices by Geo Vazhappillly. The tech-talks were very informative and were well received by the

‘GHATECH-2011’audience as they gained an insight into various fields of knowledge.

Different exhibition stalls were put up by the departments in the college along with the strong support and participation from organizations like ISRO, BSNL and CMET. The stalls were an insight into the world of technology. It also paved way to delve deeper into the various aspects of technology.

The ISRO stall included different models and parts of artificial satellites, launching vehicles, rockets etc. It also provided information about the historic achievements in space research and technology in India such as the establishment of ISRO and first Indian Satellites. The BSNL stall gave an overview into today's telecommunication technologies such as GSM, GPRS, CDMA, 3G networks, different types of telephones etc. The CMET stall displayed different electronic components and aerosol technologies among many other things. The Robotics stall contained small robotic models resembling various insects and remote controllable robots with video transmission facilities.

The students from the departments of the college had setup stalls highlighting their department’s core areas. The ECE department had LED displays, a smart home, sound activated lighting systems, etc. The CSE department gave an introduction about computers, microprocessors, hardware, operat-ing systems, free and open source software’s, networking, etc. The IT department set up student’s projects, electrical wiring, web designing and networking. Stalls were also put up by Mechanical and Civil Engineering Department; these stalls were useful in giving the much needed insight into the working of many machineries and instruments. The stalls were visited by public and as well as by students of neighbouring schools and colleges.

A wide range of technical competitions were held for the students during these days. On the day one, technical paper presentation, The Best Manager

and finals of the school level quiz competitions were conducted. The day two witnessed yet another range of competitions like coding, software debugging, circuit designing, and technical quiz. The circuit designing had 14 teams, circuit simulation had 6 teams and the quiz, 15 participant teams. Students from about 15 colleges across Kerala and Tamilnadu participated in various competitions. On the final day had Robotics competition, Circuit simulation, Problem solving and Mathematical modeling competitions.

On the whole the event showcased the organizational and leadership skills of student members of IEEE SB functioning in the institute. Their ability to interact effectively and motivate others was the main reason for the success of the event.

ComSoc, IEEE Kerala Section, organized a technical talk on the topic ‘Mobile Applications for Home Security’ at Institution of En-gineer’s Hall, Thiruvananthapuram on 23rd March 2011. The talk was delivered by Bincy Baby, Head of Convergence Business Group, Rain Concert Technologies, Tech-nopark, Thiruvananthapuram. The speaker is an expert in the area of Information Security Management Systems and owns a Professional record of having led some of the

flagship e-governance projects of Government of Kerala under the Kerala State IT Mission.

The focus of the talk was to address the growing social concern of home security and to explore the possibility of finding solutions with the application of wireless and mobile technologies. The speaker observed that the existing security devices like CCTV, Alarms Systems, etc., acts only as alert systems in case of an emergency and operate in isolated mode

with no connectivity across allied system. The need for devising a solution based on innovative approach, which can bring together emergency management with latest convergence technologies, was emphasized. The relevance of using mobile technology services for home security was deemed as a rational approach, as the ubiquitous mobile phones have now emerged as powerful tools for networked computing.

As part of the presentation, the speaker explained the dif-ferent functional components of a generic home security system and discussed various technology components involved in it. A mo-bile based system being deployed in Thiruvananthapuram was ex-plained. In case of an emergency, the person in emergency presses a preset number in his mobile phone or the button in wireless unit. The unit sends signals to an indoor unit. The indoor unit then sends signals to the Application Server through GSM. Upon re-ceiving the signal, the application server sends data to the security personnel’s mobile device. Along with this, most priority neighbours

are alerted through the server and security personnel rushes to the lo-cation to address the emergency.

The generic mobile based framework renders value addition in a way that the same application can be customized for specific de-mands such as medical emergen-cy and assistance and can cater to a wider user population consisting of elder citizens, women, physi-cally challenged, children and sick people. The speaker concluded that because of its social implica-tion, there has been growing inter-est in the adoption of such systems among various user groups along with the added endorsement and support from the law enforcement agencies.

In connection with the National Science Day, the IEEE Student Branch of MES College of Engineering organised a one day program, Quark’11 on February 28, 2011. The event was open to both IEEE members and non-members of the College.

The program began with the inaugural session graced with the presence of Chief Guest - K P Mohandas, Professor, Department of Electrical and Electronics Engi-neering, NIT Calicut (Chairman, IEEE Malabar Sub Section), V. H. Abdul Salam, Principal, MESCE who inaugurated the event, K P Mohammed, Direcor, MESCE who gave the Presidential address, and Shone Jose, Ex-Hub 5 Driver, VJEC. The Staff in charge of the program was Kabeer V, Lecturer, MCA Department, MESCE.

After the inaugural session K P Mohandas gave a talk on Professional Ethics. In this ever changing and fast developing world of technology and professionalism, his ideas on the importance of ethics has great relevance. The idea of unethical professionalism and expertise is indeed something to be feared and discouraged. The talk hence proved to be highly relevant and inspiring. 32

Speak Out Loud Debates (SOLD), the latest addition to the list of inspiring activities by IEEE Student Branch, MESCE asks you just one question: Are you bold enough? If yes, then you are welcome to spend 90 minutes every week with a group of similar bold people and battle it out.

The battle waged with words instead of swords takes you to an atmosphere of passionate academic and intellectual conflicts. Each person enters the arena with a clear idea about which side they want to take and tries very hard to prove their view is right, only to accept defeat in front of some infallible logic put forward by the other side. What SOLD does to people can only be realised once you have experienced it. Several people come in saying they don’t want to talk but only to listen, but

SOLD - Are You Bold Enough?they walk out making some very strong statements to themselves and the world regarding the matter. The atmosphere is one that inspires you to come out and stand by what you believe.

SOLD makes students stop and think about very important things happening in the society. The first SOLD happened on 18th February 2011 on the topic “Are environmental concerns hampering economic growth?” Since then SOLD has never looked back. SOLD has happened every week after that without fail which is in itself a feat that testifies to the popularity and acceptance of the venture. It has grown into a platform to discuss a wide variety of topics ranging from "Corrupt India? The Indian Kleptocracy", "Social Networking - Like or Unlike?", "Evolving culture; For the Better or for worse?",

SOLD serves as a platform to discuss issues which don’t tend to come up in usual students’ conversations. The students who participate in the debate get a chance to know and understand opinions different from their own and it helps to develop an open mindset within the students. The amount of knowledge being shared in each and every debate is quite staggering. Though there are always a panel of four speakers

and a moderator to initiate the talk, the success of SOLD lies in the active spirited participation of each and every audience present. The language of intercourse being English, these debates also helps the students develop their communication skill.

SOLD help create better citizens out of students in MES College of Engineering. It reminds students of their duty to become a responsible and socially aware citizen of India. It inspires them to become the voice of truth and justice. SOLD requests each student never to let their soul and conscience be sold.

It was followed by a talk on Free Software Community Project by C K Raju, Head of the Department, Department of Information Tech-nology, MESCE. The talk focussed on the expanding vistas of opportunities brought out by free software.

Entrepreneurship for Engineer-ing Students was the topic handled by Shone Jose. Entrepreneurship has made its mark as one of the most promising career paths for

Engineers. The talk hence proved to be highly inspiring and insightful.

Afternoon session turned out to be a highly enjoyable experience with hands on workshop on HAM radio. The session was handled by four people led by Nagesh R, Treasurer, HAM Radio Club, Kollam. It was a different experience to the students as they were able to see the working of HAM Radio live and know its wide variety of possibilities.

The program was wound up by 16:00 hrs. The program was a huge success as it helped in improving the scientific temper of students and imparting knowledge to the students, the main objective behind observing Science Day.

A brief account of activities held in the first quarter of the current year is given below:• A four day MATLAB workshop

was co-organised by IEEE SB from 31st of January 2011 to 3rd

February 2011. 120 students

attended the training program, which included both the IEEE and non-IEEE students. The workshop was conducted by Sangeev Kupakaddi, from ITIE Solutions, Bangalore, who is a pioneer in MATLAB training and a strong IEEE promoter in the Bangalore Section. It covered a wide variety of topics such as Basic MATLAB, Digital Signal Processing and Introduction to Image Processing.

■ An Awareness Program was held exclusively for the first year IEEE members. The session was handled the Secretary,

St. Joseph’s College of Engineering & Technology, Pala

Eabi Shaji, at 16:30 hrs on 31st January 2011. All the 60 who attended the program were enlightened about IEEE’s aim, vision, mission, WIE; the challenges faced by IEEE and most importantly the value of membership. He also gave a brief overview of the IEEE SJCET SB and its goals for the current academic year.

■ A session was next held on Tricks and Tips on Windows 7 which was handled by Dixon Dominic, at 16:30 hrs on 1st February 2011. The 45 students who attended the program left the hall fully satisfied loaded with information. It triggered their interest in Windows 7 and inspired the students to use their operating system in a much more efficient manner.

■ An event called Junior Contender was conducted by Krishna S Nair, at 15:30 hrs. on 2nd February 2011 which gave the first years a taste of the fun side of the IEEE SJCET SB. The competition not only provided a venue for the fun loving students

to showcase their talents but also provided a platform for the shy ones to bring out the best within them keeping all stage fear aside.

■ Another Fun Program was the outdoor events that were managed by Bush Simon, at 15:30 hrs on 3rd February 2011. The participants were divided into three groups and given various activities. All the fun

and frolic helped each of the students relieve their minds from the tight schedule of college life, and of-course knows each other better.

■ Conducted a TV Turnover on 24th February 2011 at 17:00 hrs. About 11 students attended the program. They were divided into two groups of 6 and 5 students each. The topic of the TV turnover was Construction of the Millau Bridge. It was well handled by Rajesh Ventraprakada. It displayed the listening skills and intelligence of the participants.

■ A six day PCB Design Workshop was organised which had participation of 117 students. The workshop was conducted by Ajith and Nandini from Electronics For You (EFY) Tech Centre, Banglore, during 21st February till 26th of February. It covered a wide variety of topics:

• Simulation of circuits using QUCS software

• PCB design using KICAD

■ The IEEE SJCET student branch conducted the AGM (Annual General body Meeting). Around 80 students attended the program. It started at 15:30 hrs

with Savio Joe reading out the IEEE Code of Ethics followed by the welcome speech by Sabarinath, the branch counselor, speeches by Paul Ansel, faculty advisor of WIE and the chief guest for the day, Madhukumar, the Dean and HOD of Applied Electronics and Instrumentation. After his speech, Eabi Shaji, Secretary, gave a detailed report on the activities of the year 2010. This was followed by a speech by Delice Cyriac, the Chairperson of SB. For the first time, the SB has introduced the Best Volunteer Award which was rightly awarded to Bush Simon. Also, Thomas Siby and Dixon Dominic were awarded cash cheque and certificate for securing the 2nd position in the Global Photo Contest held by IEEE. Finally, the nominations

for the new execom members for the year 2011-2012 were called up which was passed by the audience without any contestants. After this, the new

office bearers gave away their future plans aiming vibrant activities for the year ahead. Then an open forum was held which received a lot of suggestions from the audience to improve the future activities to be conducted in the current year. The meeting was brought to an end at 17:45 hrs with a photo session.

■ IEEE SJCET SB co-organised a two day OrCAD training program during the 10th and 11th of March 2011. The session was handled by Mohit John, Asst. Professor, Department of AEI. Both IEEE and non-IEEE students attended the program enthusiastically and benefited quite a lot from this training.

■ A National level Project Exhibition, PaeiX 2K11 ‘Where Engineering meets Ingenuity’,

supported by IEEE, was conducted at SJCET on 18th March 2011. The Department of Applied Electronics & Instrumentation was the brains behind this highly anticipated program. The registrations commenced at 9:30 hrs. There were about 13 registered projects - 3 internal & 10 external. PaeiX 2K11 was officially inaugurated by the Chairman Philip Njaralakatt. The first round evaluation was done by the judges, K.N. Somanathan A and C S M Kumar from Government Polytechnic, Pala. They had filtered top nine projects. For the final round of evaluation the judges were Paul Ansel V from the Department of EC and Jose Philip from the Department of ME. The selected projects were presented using Power Point. The interesting projects were ‘3D Imaging’, ‘3D Printer’, ‘Distillation Using Solar Power’, ‘Face Detection’ etc. The judges evaluated the participants on the basis of their soft skills, matter presentation and question tackling. The top three were selected based. The First Prize of `.12000 was bagged by the team from SCMS for their ‘3D Printer’. The second was awarded to Jobin Daniel and Team from SJCET with `.6000 for ‘Electrochemical Spark Machining’. Finally not behind

were Jomon John and team from SJCET pursing `.2000 for ‘Face Detection’. As a token of appreciation all the participants in the finals were awarded participation certificates and cash tokens. Among the Exhibits, the ‘Hybrid Car’ from the Mechanical Department, was highly noted and appreciated by the external participants. Abi P Mathew concluded the fest with his vote of thanks.

■ A technical talk on ‘Ethical Hacking’ was held on the 28th

March, 2011 by Bibin Mathew, a first year IEEE student member of SJCET, Palai. The talk drew much appreciation and the even semester’s activities of the SB concluded as examinations start by the first week of April and may go well into June, 2011.

GOLD Activities

The first ever GOLD Congress in the history of IEEE Kerala section was held at Mar Baselios College of Engineering and Technology, Thiruvananthapuram on 26th

February 2011. The event turned out to be a resounding success and marked an ideal kick off for the GOLD activities in the Section this year. The Congress was followed by a Networking Dinner in which ideas were exchanged and actions were for planned for a vibrant GOLD in the coming months. Jaison Abey Sabu, one of the most prominent GOLD members of Kerala Section was honored at the event for his exemplary contributions to IEEE. The event was formally inaugurated by Amarnath Raja, Chair IEEE Global HTC committee by lighting the lamp, a traditional custom of Kerala. The occasion was also graced with the presence of a star studded dignitary bench which boasted of eminent personalities like Sasi PM, S Gopakumar, both Past Chairs of Kerala Section, K B Senthilkumar, Section Secretary, Jaison Abey Sabu, Section Student Activities Chair and Visan Koshy Varghese, South Asia GOLD clustering program coordinator. The entire Congress was centered

The GOLD Congress did full justice to this focus and became an ideal venue to bridge the gap between the graduating students and the industry professionals and helped everyone present to expand their professional network. The detailed session by session coverage of the event is given below. Inaugural Ceremony

The clock chimed three in the evening and everything was in place for the inauguration of the most awaited GOLD event of the year-the Kerala Section GOLD congress. The proceedings of the day started with the recitation of the IEEE code of ethics by the dignitaries and delegates which was followed by a welcome address by Namith Najeeb, Vice-Chair GOLD. In his presidential address, the principal of Mar Baselios College highlighted the significance IEEE and GOLD plays in transforming the lives of students into responsible young professionals. The spotlight then shifted to Amarnath Raja, Chair, IEEE Global HTC committee as he lighted the ceremonial lamp marking the inauguration of the event. In his inaugural address

Raja stressed on the objectives of GOLD and how it assists the young professionals in shaping their career. He also urged the young and vibrant GOLD community to get involved in humanitarian activities undertaken by IEEE globally. He was all praise for the GOLD team that organized this historical event. The inaugural address was followed by felicitations by other dignitaries of the day S Gopakumar, Jaison Abey Sabu and Visan Koshy. All of them spoke briefly about GOLD and wished the GOLD activities of the Section all success. Rayees Amar Nishad, GOLD Chair of the Section addressed the gathering soon after. He announced the GOLD activities planned for the year and expressed his intent to recruit more vibrant Professionals into GOLD in the coming months. The inaugural ceremony concluded with the vote of thanks delivered by Sanju Mathew of Mar Baselios College of Engineering. IEEE Awareness Session

A comprehensive awareness session on IEEE and its membership benefits was handled by S Gopkumar, a veteran of IEEE Kerala Section. His session was tailor made specifically for the young non IEEE professionals who were invited from the industry. He made them aware of the exclusive benefits one gets from joining IEEE and the significant transformation

it makes to their professional and personal growth. He highlighted the various opportunities and resources IEEE GOLD offers to young professionals who are embarking on their professional careers. The session was highly informative and the IEEE audience present gained a lot of in depth and knowledge about the various activities and opportunities of the organization they are part of. He also shared enthralling experiences he had with IEEE throughout the last 26 years of his life in which he donned several responsibilities including Section Chair and Student Activities Chair. The session came to an end on an inspiring note and served its intended purpose. GOLD Awareness Session

Visan Kosy Varghese, South Asian GOLD clustering program coordinator and a well known volunteer in R10 GOLD was flown into Kerala for handling this all important session. It was an energy packed session which covered all the important aspects about GOLD starting from its objectives, its vision and mission and the opportunities it offers to the young professionals. The delegates warmed up to the session and showed keen interest in knowing more about GOLD ,the activities it covers and the resources they can explore for bettering their careers. Visan also talked briefly about the

GOLD activities at the R10 and HQ level. He urged the GOLD members of Kerala to get involved in GOLD activities globally and mentioned about the important GOLD activities coming up such as the R10 GOLD meet and the Global GOLD Summit. Session on Career Development

One of the major highlights of the event was a session on Career Development by Amarnath Raja, esteemed chief guest for the occasion. It was a mind blowing session that covered a wide range of topics ranging from how to choose the right career up to how to build a smart career in today’s competitive world. Raja shared interesting and challenging episodes from his professional life to enlighten the delegates on the challenges and risks associated with building a successful career. He highlighted the importance passion plays in building up one’s career. He advised the young professionals to be passionate about their career which he stressed is the key tool that will take them to exponential heights. He urged the young professionals to identify the right career that suits their interests and aspirations. This session by Amarnath Raja, one of the most regarded IEEE members around the globe turned out to be a life time treat for all the delegates present who described the session as highly informative and motivating.

Panel Discussion – IEEE GOLD and Career growth

The star attraction of the IEEE Kerala Section GOLD congress-A panel discussion on IEEE GOLD and Career growth was next on the agenda. The panel discussion was moderated by Jaison Abey Sabu, Student Activities Chair and a highly regarded GOLD member of Kerala Section. The three member expert panel for the discussion comprised of eminent personalities of Kerala namely Amarnath Raja, CEO, Inapp Technologies, Sasi P M Additional Director CDAC (Centre for Development of Advanced computing) and S Gopakumar Group Director, VSSC. The follow-ing were the key points that came up during the discussion: * The expectations of organi-

zations and companies from young professionals.

* Difference between Government and Private sector careers.

* Role of IEEE in supporting professional and personal growth.

* Role of IEEE GOLD in assisting young professionals in building a strong career.

* Enhancing GOLD membership value. The discussions were highly

effective and made inroads of wisdom and knowledge into the minds of young professionals who are on the verge of embarking on their professional career. The

dividends and outcomes derived from the discussion exceeded expectations by all standards and made the participants realize the value of IEEE membership in their professional life. It also assisted Kerala Section GOLD in coming up an action plan for the coming year based on the needs and expectations of the GOLD members in the section.

ACTIVITIES HUB 1 WIE Awareness

A complete awareness about WIE affinity group and its functioning sessions on basic documentation, reporting, proposal writing, WIE funding sources etc. I V to Automobile Workshop

An Industrial Visit to an automobile Workshop will be organized with the objective of imparting basic mechanical skills and providing first hand information on automobiles to the members. Photoshop, Flex/Brochure Printing

A seminar on Photoshop with the aim of giving its members an insight into its various fascinating aspects will be held. Face detection techniques, regeneration of old photographs, image processing will also be discussed. Flex and brochure designing methods will also be covered. Wie Care

With a social objective, WIE will set out to spent a day at a poor home. Paper Presentation Competition and Communication Carnival

Paper presentation competition will be conducted at each SB the finalists of which will compete against each other at the HUB

level. A communication carnival to encourage girls to come to the forefront and shed their inhibitions is also to be organised. Language Workshop A comprehensive workshop on any latest software language will be held. Industrial Training

A 2 day industrial training in a core company will be conducted to enhance the Industrial experience of its members. SB Level Events

The following events are mandatory at the SB level monthly Spectrum Quiz, Paper Presenta-tion competition and STAR. ACTIVITIES HUB 2

Hub 2 is one among the five active hubs in Kerala section WIE chapter. Hub 2 is trying to initiate WIE in all 10 student branches. WIE activities for this academic year include: w WIE WEEK, which is purely tech-

nical. It includes project expo, paper presentation and spectrum quiz. w WIE MEET, being a managerial

event, consists of a one day management work-shop. w A face to face meet shall be

organised, with an eminent personality, regarding women empowerment.

w A Star Program team will be formed for coordinating the Star Program within the hub. We also plan a charity event, to be conducted at the hub level.

ACTIVITIES HUB 3 WIE – the affinity group of IEEE was established with a foresight of involving the women technocrats in building a brighter tomorrow. As the name suggests, Women In Engineering has put forward various ideas in empowering women in technical arena and implemented them ever since its commencement. The hub level WIE fraternities are credited with the successful accomplishment of various activities, which resulted in the robust growth of WIE. The following are the activities which are to be implemented under the auspices of WIE IN Hub 3: w Monthly Spectrum talks,

beginning in April. w Empowerment of women

students through leadership and management classes. w Panel discussions with women

professionals. w Technical classes on basics of C

programming and electronics. w Classes on Web Designing,

Photoshop. Paper Presentations on emerging technologies, to be conducted in July (tentative dates). ACTIVITIES HUB 4 Hub HUB 4 is an assemblage of

five Professional Colleges, forming an active group under the LINK. Two among those Colleges, Jyothi Engineering College (JEC) and Vidhya Academy of Science and Technology (VAST), are active members of WIE. The others (IES College of Engineering, Govt Engineering College, Thrissur, and Royal College of Engineering) are expected to receive approval for their WIE formation petition in two months time. Some of the future activities of the WIE units are as follows: w To begin with, a program ‘Spectrum Speaks‘ is proposed to be conducted in the SBs. It is to be started in the month of April and to be followed by such talks once every month. It is aimed at discussing, with the help of paper presentations, articles published in the IEEE journal ‘SPECTRUM‘. w A paper presentation competition

is also anticipated in the month of September. w A charity programme, ‘Spread

a Smile‘, would be organised in the month of October. A visit is planned to a Pain and Palliative Care Society Centre. w Apart from the activities

mentioned above, the WIE Hub 4 is also planning.wLeadership training program and

an orientation program‘ for girls towards placement procedures.

w Besides this, we are also planning to sup-port a ‘Self help group‘ for unemployed women, providing them with basic computer education. w We plan to implement Hobby

Club‘ for IEEE members in every college under this hub. This club is aimed at encouraging the SB members on their various talents. w A class on Programming in C‘

is also to be provided for 1st year students of the colleges involved.

ACTIVITIES HUB 5 The focus of WIE Hub 5 this year is to increase the participation of girls in various events of IEEE, at the SB level as well as Hub level. We plan to increase the confidence level in our members by conducting several programmes like paper presentations, debates, workshops,

etc. especially for girls. Workshops will help to improve their practical and technical knowledge along with the theoretical concepts. We also aim to improve personality and communication skills by conducting classes by trained profes-sionals, and provide a platform for WIE members to share and execute ideas. Activities Planned: w A WIE Hub 5 working committee

has been formed. Each member of the working committee will ensure that programmes are conducted as per plan in the SBs. w Activities such as spectra

quiz‘- quizzes based on the SPECTRUM, and spectra talk‘ shall be organised in the SBs. w We plan to conduct a paper

presentation competition, ex-clusively for WIE members, and robotics workshops in our Hub during the month of July.
