Provision of Ecosystemservices through theEnvironmental StewardshipSchemeThe Hedgelaying Association of Ireland recently attended theHedgerow Biodiversity Action Plan conference, held in Birmingham,UK. Funding for attendance was sourced from IEN.

IEN members may be interested in a study which was circulated at the

conference. ‘Provision of Ecosystem services through the Environmental

Stewardship Scheme’. The UK study, undertaken by Land Use Consultants

(LUC) in association with GHK Consulting (GHK) has reviewed the

ecosystem services currently provided, or with the potential to be provided,

through Environmental Stewardship (ES), Defra’s flagship agri-environment

scheme. Specifically it has investigated:

• Which ecosystem services are potentially provided by ES, following theMillennium Ecosystem Assessment framework;

• The potential quantity of this service provision, based on an analysis ofthe uptake of each of the ES options;

• The degree to which this service provision can be monitored; and

• How to value the benefits provided by these services.

National Community Food Network Submitted by Andy Hallewell, Joint Manager,

The Organic Centre

The National Community Food Network has grownout of the desire to pull together information on allthe community food initiatives around Ireland. Thehope is that the websitewww.irishcommunityfoodgrowing.org will be usedby groups to list their gardens, allotments and foodinitiatives and exchange ideas and information ongrowing, funding and available land. continued >>

The first day-long national meeting was held in October 2008at the Cultivate Centre, in Dublin, convened and facilitated bySuzie Cahn of Carraig Dúlra organic centre in Wicklow. It waswell attended by people from North and South with constructivediscussions and some basic principals agreed for the functionand use of a national network.

It was agreed to meet at least twice a year and possibly moreoften. The priorities were to continue to develop regionalgroups, to share information, to work on developing a websiteto bring together the regional websites with a mapping featureand searchable database. A more long-term plan was tocoordinate effective lobbying of the Government for land forlocal food growing.

The second national network meeting was held in February2009 at Filmbase in Dublin and was attended by SenatorDeidre Deburca who offered help to progress the draft nationalpolicy document on community food initiatives, being preparedby the Soul Food Group – young climate advocates of theChallenge Europe programme. The first phase of the websitewas developed by the Soul Food group with limited funds. TheOrganic Centre of Rossinver, Co. Leitrim agreed to continue onfrom the Soul Food Group to be a hub for gathering togetherinformation and developing the website further, subject tofunding being available.

There are currently plans for a national conference inSeptember 2009. The aim of the conference is to continue worktowards coordinating the supports available for food growersand create better linkage with each other and with nationalagencies.

Anyone who would like to include their community garden orallotment on the network website should log ontowww.irishcommunityfoodgrowing.org and add their details.
