IESE Alumni Association

The growth of our Association is explained, in

great part, by the way in which our alma mater

IESE has itself developed, together with the

continuous education programs offered to all

Members and the constant stream of new ideas

flowing from the faculty’s research.

Through its activities, the IESE Alumni Association

offers Members the chance to meet up with other

Alumni who share our desire to become better

managers and build better companies that will

make a greater contribution to the society in

which we live.

The growth of our Association is strengthened

by the Regional Alumni Chapters that now extend

to the farthest corners of the world. The

objectives we share are leading to ever greater

achievements.

For this reason, therefore, we have chosen the

strength of the tree as the theme for our Annual

Report.

Missionand Aims

IESE’s Alumni Association was formed in 1959 at the end

of the first PADE Program. Its mission was, and remains, to

promote continuous education for employers and managers

who have taken part in one of IESE’s main programs, and

to stimulate contact between the Members themselves and

between Members and IESE.

The Association’s Aims

The aims of the Association are as follows:

• To support IESE in its efforts to help companies improve, in the service of people

and society, through educational and research initiatives

• To encourage professional and social relationships among IESE Alumni

• To maintain and foster all Alumni’s relationships and collaboration with IESE as

it strives to achieve its educational, social and research objectives

• To increase awareness of IESE and its activities

The Association’s bylaws encompass this steadfast goal in the mission and purposes

that guide us. You can request a copy of the bylaws from the Association’s office.

“During my years as President of the

Association, I have been privileged

to see the growing international

nature of IESE’s Alumni and faculty

community.

The activities of our Association are

strengthened year on year and

spread ever wider thanks to the

support of its many Members, who

act as real ambassadors for IESE in

the business world. The

Association’s Executive Committee

is constantly working to foster and

develop professional relationships

between Members and to guarantee

their continuing education, with

immeasurable support from IESE’s

faculty.

Our time at IESE represented a

turning point for many of us in both

our professional careers and our

personal lives. The Association’s

mission and objectives cannot be

understood without bearing this in

mind. As its President, I am sincerely

grateful to all Members for

supporting this mission.”

The IESE Alumni community reflects the growing

internationalization of the school’s programs. The

Association has continually worked to shorten the distances

between Alumni, offering them educational opportunities

wherever they might be in the world.

Membership

The profile of IESE Alumni is becoming increasingly diverse. The high proportion

of non-Spanish students on the full-time MBA Program (70%), along with the

establishment of the school’s International Executive Education Programs (AMP

Brazil, AMP Munich, AMP Barcelona and PMD Madrid), have meant that the Alumni

Association has become an increasingly global entity. IESE Alumni currently include

88 different nationalities and work in 94 countries

By the end of the 2004-2005 academic year, 26,988 people had graduated from

IESE. The Alumni Association currently has 23 Alumni Chapters and 10,525 members,

and an average of 72% of all new graduates become members.

1,325 new members joined the Association during the 2004-2005 academic year.

Networking

The Association encourages the

creation of activities and tools that

facilitate contact among Alumni. New

technologies are continuously being

employed to shorten distances and

support relationships. Yet technology

can never replace the kind of personal

contact that forges friendships, and

class reunions are organized at IESE’s

different campuses in order to

strengthen these ties. Away from IESE,

Alumni also work closely together

through their Regional Alumni

Chapters.

Directory

The directory is a tool that supports

professional and personal

relationships between colleagues as

the years go by. It can be permanently

accessed via the Internet and is

updated with the latest information

available to IESE. It is currently

possible to consult information about

19,606 of the school’s Alumni who have

expressly given their permission for

their details to be included, in

accordance with current legislation.

E-mail Service

All IESE Alumni are provided with a permanent e-mail address on request. This

can be redirected to any external e-mail account.

IESE Members can also request an e-mail service that can be accessed via any

Internet navigation program. In-box capacity has been increased this year from

20 to 225 megabytes.

Global Campus

This technological platform is a virtual meeting place for IESE Alumni. It includes

discussion forums and areas in which information and images can be shared and

exchanged.

The global campus has included new and improved features over the last year,

positioning it as a learning environment –supported by faculty– for IESE students.

Class Reunions

The Association provides support for representatives of each graduated class for

organizing reunions with their class colleagues. Most reunions include the

participation of a member of IESE’s faculty, who accompanies graduates on their

“return to the classroom.” During the past academic year, a total of 2,079 Alumni

attended 71 reunions. The Association also facilitated 26 off-campus meetings.

Senior Members

Members have shown unwavering

loyalty to the Association over the

years. To show its gratitude, the

Association pays tribute to Alumni who

have been members for 25 years,

ContinuousEducation

Providing lifelong learning for IESE Alumni is one of the

Association’s main purposes, and one of the key reasons

that new graduates become members.

Continuous Education Program

The aim of the Continuous Education Program is to provide Members with learning

opportunities in all areas of business management, inform them of new

developments and respond to their concerns regarding the challenges that form

part of company life.

The program was designed by IESE in 1959 addressed to Members of the Alumni

Association. The program takes a humanistic and rigorous academic approach,

while touching upon all areas of international business management.

The program’s presence has extended to many different countries around the

world, with the support and encouragement of Alumni Chapters. During the 2004-

2005 academic year, 45 sessions were offered outside Spain, in 18 different

countries.

The Association would like to pay special thanks to the school’s faculty, who have

unselfishly contributed to the quality and rigor of the program. During the course

of the last year, 89 professors participated in some 172 sessions that were attended

by 15,495 people, an increase of 9.4% over the previous year.

Advances in technology have meant that the number of meetings attended by

Members has greatly increased, and barriers of both time and space have been

overcome. 20 sessions have been offered over the course of the academic year

using our new webcasting platform that allows for each session to be rebroadcast

in a high quality format.

IESE Global AlumniReunion

The 2004 Global Alumni Reunion was

moved forward to May so Alumni could

also visit Barcelona’s Forum of

Cultures, held during the summer

months.

The reunion brought IESE alumni

together for a conference that included

outstanding academic experts, CEOs

and government leaders. This annual

event offers Alumni a unique

opportunity to stay abreast of

developments at the school, a chance

to meet new members of faculty and

renew friendships with colleagues.

During the course of the last year, the

committee has been organizing the

44th Annual Global Alumni Reunion,

which will be held in Madrid on

November 11, 2005.

MBA Alumni Reunion

The celebration of the 40th

anniversary of the MBA Program gave

this year’s MBA Alumni Reunion a

particularly festive feel, and a large

number of Alumni traveled to IESE to

join in the celebrations.

More than 700 people from a large

number of countries took part in a day

of conferences and reunions. Pedro

Videla was the event’s academic

director.

Martin Wolf, Associate Editor and Chief

Economics Commentator of the

Financial Times, shared his interesting

ideas about the future of the European

economy in relation to the United

States. MBA’s were able to choose

from more than a dozen parallel

conferences that ended with an

intimate general session that brought

together five distinguished directors

of the MBA Program: Professors Carlos

Cavallé, Eduardo Martínez Abascal,

Eric Weber, Antoni Subirà and MBA

Program Director, Professor Francisco

Iniesta. Together they recounted the

achievements of the MBA Program

over the course of its 40-year history.

CareerDevelopmentServices

The IESE Alumni Association offers advice and information

to all its Members throughout their profesional lives. Interest

in this service is growing, and the Association is therefore

extending the professional services it provides in order to

broaden the support it can offer as Members review and

develop their professional careers.

Career Opportunities

The Career Opportunities service allows Members to access a private database

that lists the employment opportunities offered directly to the Association by

individual companies. During the 2004-2005 academic year, a total of 1,787 positions

were offered, an increase of 9.2% over the previous year.

Professional Career Development

The Association has launched a new career support service to help Members who

wish to make a career change in the short or medium term.

This new service provides practical and relevant information relating to planning

and looking for jobs. Resources are offered to Association Members via a restricted

area on the web site, and documents illustrating the techniques and procedures

to be followed when actively looking for work can be obtained in either printed or

electronic form.

The Association’s Office also offers an additional personalized service to members

who wish to discuss their individual situations. Last year, 96 members took

advantage of this service.

Membership Card

All Association members are given a Membership Card which accredits their status

and gives them access to a number of benefits offered by more than 70 businesses

that maintain a relationship with the Association’s members.

Members may also convert their card into a Visa Platinum or American Express

card at no extra cost, with the card account paid directly from any current account

in Spain.

Library

IESE’s library service is available to all

association members, who can borrow

books and obtain a complete

information service on any individual

business, sector or economic region

around the world. The library currently

houses around 42,000 printed books

and 4,000 electronic books,

additionally offering access to 40

databases. It also subscribes to 251

printed magazines and 3,800

electronic publications.

Use of IESE’sFacilities

IESE’s facilities are available for use

by members and their companies for

internal meetings, provided that

reservations are made in advance and

the facility required is free at the

required time. 428 meetings were held

at the school’s Barcelona and Madrid

campuses during the last academic

year.

Brief consultationwith Professors

The brief consultation service is one

of the benefits that underlines IESE’s

close relationship with association

members. The association passes on

to faculty requests from members who

wish to consult professors or seek

advice on issues of a professional

nature.

29

Publications and Research

Support for Research

With the aim of supporting the

research work carried out by IESE’s

faculty, the Association created its

Research Excellence Awards,

presented each year to three IESE

professors, in distinct areas. This year,

the jury decided to make an exception

and present four awards.

The jury is made up of members of the

Association’s Executive Committee, as

well as faculty from IESE and other

international business schools: José

Martínez-Rovira, President of the IESE

Alumni Association (Chairman); Prof.

Jordi Canals, Dean of IESE; Prof. Pankaj

Ghemawat, Harvard Business School;

Antonio González-Adalid, Vice

President of the IESE Alumni

Association; Prof. Tom Malone, MIT

Sloan School of Management; Javier

Robles, Vice President of the IESE

Alumni Association; Rafael Villaseca,

Member of the IESE Alumni

Association’s Executive Committee,

and Prof. Joan E. Ricart, Member of

IESE’s Board of Directors in charge of

Research and the Doctoral Program.

Antonio

Dávila

IESE Associate Professor in the Department

of Accounting and Control. Doctor of Business

Administration, Harvard University, Master in

Economics and Business Management, IESE,

University of Navarra. Advanced

Telecommunications Engineer, Universitat

Politècnica de Catalunya.

Prof. Antonio Dávila’s research has centered

basically around control systems in innovation

processes. His work began in the area of

product-development and went on to focus

on two complementary areas. The first is

control systems and innovation in large

companies, a subject on which he has written

some important articles, along with a book

entitled “Innovation that Works”, published

by Wharton Business School Publishing

(2006), together with Profs. Robert Shelton

and Marc Epstein. The second centers around

control systems for young innovative

companies with high levels of growth, which

has also led him to work on issues relating

to business initiatives. Finally, Prof. Dávila

has begun a further line of research that

examines management salaries and corporate

governance.

Awards for Excellence in Research 2004-2005

Fabrizio

Ferraro

IESE Associate Professor in the Department of

General Management. Ph.D. (Management

Science) Stanford University, MSc (Sociology),

Stanford University, Dottore di Ricerca

(Organization Studies), Universitá degli studi

di Udine Laurea (Economics), Universitá degli

studi di Napoli - Federico II.

Prof. Fabrizio Ferraro has focused his research

on key governance factors and organizational

processes within large companies. He has

examined this broad subject in several areas

and at different levels, with a clear emphasis

on the role of ideas and social networks in the

shaping of governance mechanisms. More

specifically, he has developed four lines of

research: 1) The influence of social sciences on

management practices; 2) The governance

mechanisms and social networks that emerge

from free software development communities;

3) The cultural bases for social capital in

business initiatives, and 4) The evolution of

governance systems and the role of the chief

executive and the board of directors in the

strategic process.

30

Johanna

Mair

IESE Associate Professor in the Department of

General Management. Ph.D. in Management,

INSEAD, France, Master of Science, INSEAD,

France, Diploma in International Relations, John

Hopkins University, Bologna, Italy, Master in

Social and Economic Sciences,

Wirtschaftsuniversitaet, Vienna, Austria, Laurea

in Economia e commercio, Universita degli studi,

Verona, Italy.

Prof. Johanna Mair has centered her research

activities in recent years around an examination

of business initiatives in unusual contexts. One

line of research has focused on business

initiatives within established companies,

placing the emphasis on how to maintain these

initiatives in mature environments and in

companies that are not faced with radical

change. She is currently examining the role of

middle-level management and the relationship

between business initiatives and disinvestment

in corporations. Prof. Mair’s second line of

research involves studying social

entrepreneurial initiatives, where the aim is to

combine the creation of both economic and

social value. Her work in this area has opened

up an uncharted area that is beginning to have

a significant global impact.

Rama

Velamuri

IESE Associate Professor in the Department

of Entrepreneurship. Ph.D., University of

Virginia, Master of Business Administration,

IESE, University of Navarra, B. Com,

University of Madras.

Prof. Ramakrishna Velamuri has developed

three lines of research over recent years.

The first sits at the crossroads between

entrepreneurship and ethics, and focuses

particularly on how prior agreements

relating to the distribution of value among

different stakeholders may have an impact

on the potential to create subsequent value

and its amount. The second examines the

resistance of entrepreneurs to corruption in

places in which this practice is widespread,

and the way in which their resistance has

an impact on stakeholder commitment to

the company itself. Finally, Prof. Velamuri

has begun to examine the mechanisms used

to generate high growth that is sustained

over time, such as through innovative

business models, the incorporation of

ethical values in organizational processes

and successive acquisitions.

31

Publications

Alumni can keep up-to-date with the latest events at IESE through various

publications.

IESE Alumni Magazine

In March 2004, IESE’s Alumni Magazine published its first international edition,

which was very well-received. 30,000 copies of the magazine are now distributed,

26,000 in Spanish and 4,000 in English.

The Alumni Magazine is a quarterly publication containing news on all the latest

happenings at IESE. Its contents are divided into three large areas: research,

information and services.

The Features section includes four articles by IESE professors dealing with different

areas in business. The Highlights section brings Alumni all the latest news from

IESE. Finally, the Alumni section keeps readers in touch with all the activities and

services offered by the IESE Alumni Association, as well as informing them of any

news sent in to the magazine by Alumni themselves.

The electronic version of the Alumni Magazine allows readers to access article in

pdf format and browse through the items contained in earlier issues

[email protected]

The Alumni Newsletter is published monthly and contains a summary of the activities

planned by the school and the Alumni Association throughout the world. The

newsletter is one of the ways in which Alumni can communicate with the association,

submit questions and make suggestions.

16,733 Alumni currently subscribe to the Newsletter.

IESE,Our School

The completion of an IESE program represents a starting

point for the IESE Alumni Association. Once a program has

come to an end, the Association offers all participants the

opportunity to become members as a way of remaining in

contact with both the school and their class colleagues and

updating their skills through the Continuous Education

Program.

Executive Education Programs

New IESE Programs

Faithful to its continual desire to innovate, and aware of the educational requirements

of today’s business world, IESE created two new programs during the 2004-2005

academic year:

Advanced Management Program (AMP) Munich

Created for executives based in the German region, this new program includes

two five-day modules in Barcelona and intervening sessions in Munich. The

inaugural edition of AMP Munich started in April and concluded in June.

CEO’s Forum

This program is aimed at the chief executives of companies, and is structured in

three one-day modules. Offered at the school’s Madrid campus, the first program

concluded in July.

General Management

Programs

IESE general management programs

are aimed at experienced managers

and provide a comprehensive overview

of critical business topics. The

programs enhance managers'

knowledge, while building personal

leadership skills.

Participants in these programs come

from all over the world, reflecting

diverse countries and professional

backgrounds. The programs take place

at the school's Barcelona and Madrid

campuses, as well as other

international locations, and often in

innovative formats.

Advanced Management Program

(AMP). Held in Barcelona, Sao Paulo

and Munich.

Program for Management

Development (PMD). Held in Madrid

and Sao Paulo.

Executive Development Program

Egypt. Offered in Cairo for managers

based in the Middle East.

PADE, PDG and PDD. Programs offered

in Spanish, in Barcelona and Madrid,

for business leaders with distinct levels

of experience.

35

Short Focused Programs

During the 2004-2005 academic year, IESE's short focused programs were attended

by an average of 25% of its Alumni. IESE offers a significant discount for Association

Members who participate in these programs.

Short Focused Programs are intense learning experiences that target a particular

business topic or area of expertise. They are led by IESE professors, sometimes

with other prestigious faculty members or special speakers. The programs draw

diverse participants from around the globe.

CorporateDevelopment

IESE receives support from a number

of prestigious companies and their

leading executives, many of whom are

Alumni of the school. Thanks to their

support, IESE is able to continue

evolving as a centre for management

education, promoting rigorous

research and staying in permanent

touch with the needs of the

community.

The assistance of the school’s Alumni

is essential for attracting support from

new companies and students for

IESE’s many programs.

IESE is currently supported by 165

Sponsoring Companies.

Grants for the MBAProgram

As part of its commitment to the

education of young employers and

managers, the Association awards four

grants to MBA candidates with the

required level of academic and

professional qualifications. These

grants cover 50% of the academic fees

during the first and second year of the

MBA program and are offered to

people whose financial resources

would not otherwise allow them to

attend.

GoverningBodies

The Association is governed by an Executive Committee

and a Governing Board, which vigorously seek to represent

the interests of all IESE Alumni.

Governing Board

The Governing Board meets once a year in ordinary session and makes decisions regarding

the different actions to be taken by the Association. All the school’s Alumni are represented

on the Board by their Class President and Secretary (elected at the end of each program)

and by the President and Vice President of their Alumni Chapter. Every three years, the

Association appoints a President. The Governing Board’s meeting for the 2004-2005

academic year was held on November 23, 2004 at IESE’s campus in Barcelona.

Executive Committee

The Executive Committee is the Association’s executive body. Its work is carried

out by individual committees that cover all the areas in which the Association is

active. It is also responsible for approving the Association’s budget and presenting

its annual financial statements to the Governing Board (see the Financial Report

on page 43). It was decided that the surplus from this year would be allocated as

follows:

· Faculty Development. Support for the Doctoral Programs that 10 professors are

currently completing at universities outside Spain.

· Development of teaching materials. During the 2004-2005 academic year, IESE

faculty have published 15 books and written 30 pieces for inclusion in books, 36

articles for internationally recognized journals, 42 working papers, 107 cases and

46 technical notes, along with a huge amount of literature relating to teaching

and research.

· IESE’s Doctoral Program. The Association provides support for this program,

which is gaining a growing international reputation and currently includes 53

doctoral students from 22 different countries.

The Association also makes financial awards in recognition of research work by

IESE’s faculty (see page 30) and offers grants for MBA students (see page 35).

Alumni ChapterBoards

To better serve members, the

Association is organized

geographically into a series of Regional

Alumni Chapters, each of which has its

own board. Regional Chapters can ask

the Executive Committee to delegate

all the powers that they require and

consider most appropriate in order to

ensure that each Chapter operates

effectively.

The number of Alumni from outside

Spain is increasing each year, reflecting

IESE’s growing profile as a leading

business school. As a result, many new

Alumni Chapters are being launched,

bringing the Association’s services

nearer to all the school’s Alumni,

wherever they may be.

(1) IESE does not charge anything for sessions given by its faculty.

(2) Includes the Association’s office expenses: premises, telecommunications services, administration, technical maintenance and support, and the cost of

the facilities used for the Association’s activities.

(3) The larger surplus this year means that 653,720 more than last year can be allocated to IESE’s training and research activities and teaching materials.

This increased surplus is mainly due to the increased income from fees, as well as from the fact that the cost of the Global Alumni Reunion 2004 was

accounted for in the 2003-2004 academic year.
