The iFly experience starts as soon you get close enough to catch a glimpse of the building gand its futuristic tower. For any of you who drive though Mission Valley on Highway 8 - you know the one. When you enter it's a little like checking in for a flight – entering information and completing waivers on a touch screen. After check-in and screening is complete, first- time flyers are off to their “flight-school” training session. This is where staff go over what flying is, answer any questions, and cover important safety and communication points. Inside the flight-chamber all communication is non-verbal due to noise, so hand signals are used instead! Pay attention here and you 'll have more fun and make more progress during your flight. After training it is time to get fitted for flight-suits, goggles and helmets. Remember, lace-up running shoes or sneakers are required; it's also best to avoid loose fitting clothing and jewelry and to empty your pockets beforehand – think Superman, minus the cape. Don't worry though lockers are available if you forget. The flight-suits themselves not only help to protect you – but have exterior handles so instructors can spot and maneuver you inside the flight-chamber. The flying itself is broken down into 1-minute segments and beginners all fly with the assistance of an instructor until the requisite skill and knowledge have been demonstrated. Having said that the jump from the observation area into the flight-chamber is an adrenaline junkies dream! As you jump up and in you're immediately greeted by winds of over 100 mph lifting you up. That can take some getting used to, but when mastered they allow you to dance on the wind with the grace of a firefly. For beginners however there is some work to be done, like keeping your head up and finding your buoyancy, but gradually as you progress you're given more and more freedom to soar.
