From the Director

Rev. Larry J. Arce, CEOFresno Rescue Mission, Inc.

My Dear Friends,

Every year at this time of the holiday season I am reminded of the story concerning Joseph and Mary when they found themselves homeless because there was no room at the Inn. “And she brought forth her firstborn Son, and wrapped Him in swaddling cloths, and laid Him in a manger; because there was no room for them at the inn.” Luke 2:7 (NKJV)

Several years ago my family and I were out of town on one of those busy holiday weekends when we decided to get a room for the night and in the morning continue to our final destination. However, as we started looking for a motel room we started seeing signs that said no vacancy. We even tried to call several motel chains but kept getting the same response, “No Vacancy!”

We continued driving from town to town towards our destination but we kept getting the same answer, “No Room!” Finally, at 2:00 in the morning we decided to just sleep in the vehicle. It was a terrible and frustrating experience to say the least. That frustrating experience brings me to the reason why I mention there was no room at the Inn.

In the Bible, we read the account in the Old Testament book of Exodus of how God sent His chosen messenger, Moses, to tell Pharaoh to release the people of Israel who had been in bondage for 400 years. The Israelites saw all the plagues that God had sent which caused Pharaoh to release Israel from bondage. In addition, they also saw the miracle whereby God led them through the desert by a cloud by day, and at night, by a pillar of fire. But they still rejected Him because they would rather not have a God who tells them what is good for them. At every turn they continued to reject Him or His advice because they had no room.

Still, we see God making His plans to save a dying world by sending his Son to die on a cross for our sins. God knew His Son would be rejected but He still loved us so much that He was willing to provide a Sacrificial Lamb to atone for our sins. Isaiah 53:3 says, “He was despised and rejected of men, a Man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid, as it were, our faces from Him; He was despised, and we did not esteem Him.” (NKJV) In today’s world people still reject the King of Kings by not allowing a manger scene to be displayed. They say we no longer have a need for His law, His love, or His sacrifice for us.

My friends know this, that God will keep coming back to us even though we reject Him. I encourage you to open your heart and life to Christ, because we have no assurance when we will breathe our last breath. At that point, it will be too late.

You are the Innkeeper of your heart and your life. Do you have room for Him?

I pray that you and your family experience the most joyful Christmas ever.

Peace, prosperity, and good health to you,

Home for the Holidays Sierra Biaze, Lead Cook for the Fresno Rescue Mission

We first shared Sierra’s testimony in the December 2014 edition of Lighthouse News. We thought it would be a great opportunity to revisit her story exactly one year later:

I come from an incredible family. I have to admit that I didn’t always know that. I have two uncles and six aunts, all from Mom’s side of the family. They are all accomplished professionals with children of their own. My mom was the one sibling who struggled. I once thought her struggles were also my struggles, simply by bloodline. If I made a poor decision, somehow it was because we were cursed by her choices, or so I thought. Today I know Jesus and the power He has to redeem. My choices were mine alone. My love for Mom is something the Lord gave me to share with her. I now trust He is at work in everything and everyone that touches my life. So here I am; age 35 and reuniting with my family for the very first time through His eyes and His heart. I hope this description conveys, with some accuracy, the blessings He gave me as I stepped out in faith.

I am a woman with a 25 month victory over addiction in Christ. As I went home for the holidays, I had a thousand thoughts running through my mind, far too many to explain. As I entered the house where 40+ family members had gathered to celebrate Thanksgiving, all of whom I hadn’t seen in over a decade, they began clapping and cheering for me. They weren’t clapping about my addiction and recovery. They were welcoming me home because they love me. I never quite understood that until now.

Twelve years ago I was so deep in my addiction that I stole $4000 from my grandma. She forgave me, but my Aunt Joanie pressed charges, resulting in a year of prison time. This was the same aunt who once welcomed me and my brother into her home when I was just 16, taking care of us when Mom couldn’t. What I once thought, all the mixed baggage of gratefulness destroyed by blame and envy, was suddenly put to rest. It was great seeing her again.

My Aunt Gail surprised me. She walked right up to me and hugged me. It melted my heart. I was in her arms and loving every second. It was a great hug. During our visit, Aunt Gail invited me to the family girl time. She and her two daughters, my only female cousins in our family, meet for coffee fairly often. “We want to see you,” she said. “You are part of the family - one of my daughters. You need to come.” It felt so good to be included in their fun.

My uncle, a judge in the Superior Court of Fresno, made the greatest impact. He spent a lot of time just talking to me; listening to my stories of work and church, and hearing about the great friendships I have made along the way. I talked a lot about what Jesus means to me. He never seemed bored or doubtful. I was blown away by what he said to me. “Sierra, I typically see nothing but the negative. I want you to come around more. I need to hear more about the changes you are experiencing. I want to know that this kind of change is possible. I need to hear it.” In that moment I felt so free. I was making an impact for Christ. I am now an encourager for other people - my family, no doubt - about what Jesus can do! Not all my relatives are followers of Christ, but they all recognized His work in me during our visit. It was the best Thanksgiving I could have ever had. We were all together - everyone with their own flaws and insecurities, so thankful for each other and happy to finally be together. No one judged. We just celebrated the fact that we loved each other. It was the kind of family reunion I imagined God was proud to witness.

Psalm 119:105 states, “Your Word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” The Gospel of John, verse 1-4 says, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He [Jesus] was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.” (NKJV) These Scriptures hold me tight. In them are the assurances that I am well-known, loved, cared for, and designed by God for His purpose. Also are the assurances that though many will not understand His power, it will shine through nonetheless.

I have made mistakes and poor choices, but I am a child of God and I am truly blessed. Because of Christ Jesus, I’m home.

THE HYMN OF JOY

Joyful, joyful, we adore Thee, God of glory, Lord of love;

hearts unfold like flowers before Thee, opening to the sun above.

Melt the clouds of sin and sadness; drive the dark of doubt away. Giver of immortal gladness, fill us with the light of day!

All Thy works with joy surround thee, earth and heaven reflect Thy rays, stars and angels sing around Thee,

center of unbroken praise. Field and forest, vale and mountain,

flowery meadow, flashing sea, chanting bird and flowing fountain,

call us to rejoice in Thee.

Thou art giving and forgiving, ever blessing, ever blest,

well-spring of the joy of living, ocean depth of happy rest!

Thou our Father, Christ our brother, all who live in love are Thine;

teach us how to love each other, lift us to the joy divine.

Mortals, join the mighty chorus which the morning stars began;

love divine is reigning o’er us, binding all within its span.

Ever singing, march we onward, victors in the midst of strife;

joyful music leads us sunward, in the triumph song of life.

Poem by Henry van Dyke, 1907; set to music by Ludwig van Beethoven’s

final symphony No 9

As I sit here and contemplate Thanksgiving, and now Christmas, I am in awe of God – how He moves in our ministries: the meals that are served, the care that is given, and most importantly, the lives that are impacted for His Kingdom. I am honored to be part of the team at the Mission. Having spent six years on the frontline, ministering to women who were formerly incarcerated through Samaritan Women and then watching the Lord expand that ministry with the single women and women with children who would become the focus of Rescue the Children, I know that we are making an impact for generations to come through all the ministries we offer. I love to see life-change; meeting people who seem hard and cold and watching as God helps them change their heart, to be open and caring. Now I have the privilege of telling the stories of the Mission on a public scale - and I am SO blessed!

Wednesday, before Thanksgiving, I decided to end my day by making phone calls to a few Mission supporters. My goal was to simply THANK them for partnering with us and for blessing those we serve in ministry. Instead, I was the one blessed! They shared words of encouragement that touched me:

“Thank YOU for what you do.” “I really believe in the work the Mission is doing.” “You are a blessing for me as well and for our city.”

I wish we could personally call every one of you that supports the ministries of the Fresno Rescue Mission, but there are over 14,000 of you! If we could, we would simply say, “Thank you for giving. You are making an eternal difference. Your love, care and support effects thousands of lives, and there would not be a Rescue Mission in Fresno if not for you. You are impacting lives individually and for generations to come. YOU are a blessing to our city.”

In this season of giving, I am asking you for a favor. Would you drop us a note and let us know why you support the Mission? Feel free to place a note in the offering envelope, send a note via the website: www.Fresnorm.org, or e-mail me: [email protected]. I will be sure to pass along your encouraging messages. Thanks for giving. Merry Christmas, from our family to yours!
