Dear EditOI-

This is in response to what Wa Sung means Usushyally if you have a question about the club our WS Club Historian Mr Howard Ahe-Tye would generally be able to answer the questions You can also try to contact Victor Mal or Bill Jan

In regards to the semantics of the words Wa means the people of the Wa Dynasty (aftel t he Ching Dynasty) Officially it is called The New Reshypub lic of China - Chung Hwa Peoples Country (direct translation) afterwards came Maos Peoples Republic of China but the name can-ied on) The immigrants who came to this counshytry during the big takeover had fled China in fear of political persecution These Chinese immigrants needed general association with our own but did not want to be associated with Communism Th ey wele referred all Asian people of Middle World Country decent the Wa or Hwa people (China meant middle worldcountry- tile Chinese also arro shygantly placed ourselves in the center of the unishyverse) The worJd Wa people or Hwa people are now widely used as people of one decent associshyated only by heritage of blood an d not divided by politi ca l or geographical differences

Also semantically speaking Sung means life or you can say essence or life force Which would mean that Wa Sung is comprised of the life fo rce of Asians In other words our club has a name t hat eve lY person associated with it can be proud of

Please check this with Howard or Kathy Jeong since she Ilas his book about the Chinese immigl-ants

Sincerely

Deborah Pan

Regarding the newsletter opinion poll It IS too bad that Wa Sung Selvice Club members cant see beyond theil own disshycomfort of not understanding or the need to fosshyter the continued traditions and spirit of Wa Sung Service Club It seems that all we do is If we dont ulderstand it we just dump it and change the name Society has already become a transient and disposable society that even our younger generations see no teal stability and traditions as one of the disposable I grew up with the Club and fee l a real kin-ship but dont count me in fa vol of the name change If t hat happens you will also count me as disposing it

Sure we need better communication but just a m name change tvill not effect this Name recogni- I tion is fostering of t he ideals put fOlth and tile i members willi ngness t o get the word out and not just the Panca~e Breakfast th ough that is the most notable event Community outreach and communication has always been a stumshybling block for all organizations but it is the one area Im sure the Clu b ca n find di rection and
