The Emerald Ash Borer has come to North America and they are destroying forests. In Toronto alone, the Borer will bring down more than 200,000 ash trees within a five year period. IIDEX Woodshop aims to reduce the number of ash trees headed for the landfill by creating innovative, market-ready commercial and consumer prototypes that will be on display on the IIDEXCanada Show Floor.

This year’s exhibition features 14 winning designs selected from more than 70 global submissions showcasing new and innovative wood prototypes utilizing Toronto’s untapped ash wood resource.

This exhibit will also be on display as part of the TO DO festival at Toronto City Hall, January 18 to 24, 2016. Visit iidexcanada.com for more information.

Making ash dowels for legs and using a brass connecting system allows for easy assembly and take down. Each piece in the collection is built from ash wood and is made using a CNC modular cutting machine.

This iconic ash wood dining chair surprises its guests with a subtle recline, perfect for lingering after dinner on the lanai or at the dining table.

This versatile bicycle hook can be rotated and installed to suit any bar frame configuration through flexibility in range of installation. This carefully designed object composed of a series of geometric facets has a presence on the wall even when it’s not serving its purpose.

Ride the city streets in style with fenders made from ash wood. The fenders fit a standard 700c bicycle, and feature stainless steel mounting hardware to brave the elements. Finished with a marine-grade finish, these fenders are designed to ride with you rain or shine.

This bedroom storage bench is made of solid white ash and vegetable tanned leather. The prototype demonstrates the bending capabilities of white ash through the process of steam bending.

Jake Whillans, Craft + DesignLeather Bench

The Fluyt Bench features a modern and functional design embracing the wood properties and historical use of ash. Supported by steam-bent ash ribs, the top opens to reveal a large storage area and small ash feet create the illusion that the bench is floating off the ground.

This three-legged solid ash chair explores the classic milking stool and shares the same simple motivation for its incarnation: function. The two front legs are joined to the seat with a wedged through-tenon. The back rest is steam-bent and the seat center is scoop shaped for comfort.

Katrina Tompkins, Tinsel & SawdustThree-Legged Solid Ash Chair

Sewing Lamp is a combination of stitching together ash veneer and adhesive fiber by applying a sewing technique to treat the wood as a fabric. Through this technique, the designer succeeded in fusing together furniture and fashion design to expand the wood’s possibilities.

Kunikazu HamanishiSewing Lamp

Simple, smooth and rounded edges create a supple feel when held, in-creasing comfort during use. Its sleek taper ensures good grip, and ash’s substantial weight supports the usability while applying pressure. Ash is perfect for contact with food as it doesn’t alter taste.

This light was designed to provide a long linear glow. The mounting structure is a thin wood slip in a slender rectangular ash veneer base. Two light fixtures mounted back-to-back ‘slide’ past one another providing a long, linear asymmetrical strip light with a brief overlap at its midpoint.

Ramen is a playful Nordic dining chair whose form is reminiscent of dining utensils. Quarter sawn white ash veneer was pressed around a CNC mould to form the contours of the saddle and backrest with matching lumber. A soap finish was applied to keep the natural colour of the ash.

This simple side table was inspired by a tour of Toronto’s Tower Automotive Building. The legs, like the building’s cylindrical support columns, flow visually into the corners of the tapered tabletop and flare outwards near the ceiling, creating a more robust support system implying continuous form.

The chair’s design is like muscle meeting bone. The bracing members decentralize the load between chair legs and other parts to reduce bodily impact. Through this design strategy, the chair’s unique curves allow users to feel comfortable without requiring cushions.
