    Prof G N S Prasanna, presented paper titled The Relational Algebra of Con-

    straint Sets in Robust Optimization on 2010 INFORMS Annual Meeting inAustin, Texas, between Nov 7-10, 2010.

    Dr Poonacha, PhD (IIT, Kanpur) who earlier taught at IIT-Bombay and

    worked in Sasken, has joined IIIT-B as visiting faculty on November 8, 2010.

    IIIT-B bid-farewell to Prof Irith Hartman, Visiting Professor, after her 1 year

    stint at IIIT-B.

    Govt. of India has nominated Prof S Sadagopan as an Independent Director

    on the Board of BEML Ltd., A Govt. of India Mini Ratna PSU under Ministry ofDefence for 3 years from Nov 12, 2010.

    Prof S Sadagopan, met former President Dr APJ Adbul Kalam regarding WWW

    2011 conference on 24th Nov 2010.

    Prof Debabrata Das, attended 2010 Asia Academic Forum (AAF), from 10thto

    12thNov 2010, at Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, by invitation from Intel. He pre-sented a poster on Next Generation Scalable Wireless Infrastructure and

    Services for Successful Broadband Penetration in Emerging Market at AAF. Prof Balaji Parthasarathy submitted a proposal The challenge of globaliza-

    tion: Technology driven foreign direct investment (TFDI) and its implicationsfor the negotiation of International (bi- and multilateral) Investment Agree-ments as part of a team of European, Chinese and Brazilian scholars to aconsortium of German, Italian and Swedish funding agencies. The proposalwas one of 16 shortlisted (out of 180) for a second review by an academiccommittee. Balaji was invited by the Volkswagen Stiftung to Hannover, Ger-many, to make a presentation on behalf of the team on 2nd November.Based on the presentation, the proposal was one of 6 that has beengranted funding. The research will begin in early 2011 and will go on for 2years.

    on November 22, 2010. We wish them both many years of happy, healthy

    Ravi Shukla (Class of 2007) getting married to Vandana Dubey on December

    ELITE 6

    ELITE 6 started on November 8th, 2010 inaugurated by Prof. S Sadagopan, Prof.S Rajgopalan and Prof. Debabrata Das were present along with Mr. Murugan."ELITE" is a unique opportunity for professors and lecturers in the IT area at se-lect universities to gain valuable expertise in leveraging technology to enhancethe effectiveness of teaching in classrooms, and even beyond the confines of theclassroom. In its series we have now started ELITE 6 on 8thNovember, 2010 withfirst Face to Face sessions and ends in March 2011. During the 14 week period in-between the two Face to Face sessions, participants were expected to spendabout 5 hours each week for self-learning (through online technology-enabled,interactive learning system that was made available to them by IIITB). A total of44 participants are attending the course and 12 courses they are designing usingstate of the art instructional design and pedagogic methods.

    Mr Ken Boyd visit to IIIT-B

    RedMed Systems had its launch event on Friday, November 19, on IIITB campusin Room 309 at the Incubation Center. The event was addressed by Prof. S Sada-gopan, founder and director of the Institute, and attended by over 30 people.RedMed's beta launch of the website showcased the various features and func-

    tionality. It intends to use the limited release to secure feedback for a formal re-lease in January 2011.

    About RedMed SystemsRedMed Systems is a "Health 2.0" venture being incubated at IIIT-B and

    dedicated to promoting consumer-centric care and helping consumers livehealthy lives. It proposes to do this by providing a suite of modu-lar applications on its asQmed platform for end-consumers of healthcare toevaluate and access services through the web, on the social media, and us-ing mobile devices.     RedMed Systems was founded by Jay Srinivasan and incorporated in Sep-tember 2009. Jay has over 18 years' experience in the healthcare industry,mostly in North America where he had a variety of roles spanning provider con-

    tracts, supply chain and e-procurement consulting, and clinical trials. In Indiasince 2005, he has been director of strategic planning at Sankara Nethralaya, aspecialty ophthalmic hospital in Chennai, and chief operating officer at a health-care BPO in Bangalore.

    Professor A Ravindran, Professor of Industrial Engineering and Chair, EnterpriseIntegration Consortium at Pennsylvania State University (Penn State) in theUnited States gave a series of talks on Supply Chain during November 10-16,2010 at IIITB.

    The topics covered were:

    Nov 10 - SCM overview covering Definition of supply chain (SC); SC flows, Ex-

    amples of supply chains, Importance of SCM; SC decisions; SC design; SC driv-ers; impact of globalization; top 20 supply chains.

    Nov 11 - Risk pooling and inventory aggregation in supply chainscoveringPrinciples and benefits of risk pooling in SC; optimization models for risk pooling;illustrative examples.

    Nov 12 - Managing risks in supply chaincovering Basic concepts of SC risks;real world risk events and their impacts; sources of SC risks; risk identification,risk classification and risk mitigation strategies; best risk management practicesin companies.

    Nov 15 - Global sourcing and vendor managementcovering Trends in global-ization and outsourcing; global sourcing-costs and benefits; vendor management-cost versus risk; supply risk management

    Nov 16 - Case studies in supply chain design network and multiple crite-ria approach to supplier selectioncovering 1)Design of a SC distribution net-work for a multinational consumer products company; optimization models, solu-tions and managerial implications. And 2) Use of multi criteria models and meth-ods for supplier selection and order allocation; illustration with a real life examplefor a global IT company.

    The talks were attended by IIITB faculty, research scholars, students aswell as students from other institutes in E city (XIME, Symbiosis, Welingkar,IFIM) and industry professionals from TVS group, SAP, Patni, Wipro, Infosys andSiemens.

    Deepavali Celeberation

    NIXI Workshop

    IIIT-B conducted a National Internet Exchange of India (NIXI) workshop on 28thNov 2010. The Department of Information Technology, Government of India, inthe year 2003 set up a not for profit section 25 company named The NationalInternet Exchange of India (NIXI). NIXI is the neutral meeting point of the ISPsin India. Its main purpose is to facilitate exchange of domestic Internet trafficbetween the peering ISP members. This enables more efficient use of interna-tional bandwidth, saving foreign exchange. It also improves the Quality of Ser-vices for the customers of member ISPs, by avoiding multiple international hopsand thus reducing latency.

    Prof Rolf Pfeifer (University of Zurich, Switzerland), presented a talk titled

    Soft Robotics: Self-Organization, embodiment, and biological inspiration on26th Nov 2010.

    Events

    IIIT-B celebrated Deepavali on Nov 4, 2010 with students, faculty and staff

    members.

    IIIT-B signed an Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with AsiaeUniversity

    (AeU), Kaula Lumpur, Malaysia to launch employability enhancement pro-grammes in the Asia region on Nov 19, 2010.

    IIIT-B signed an Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Alliance4 University (A-4U) of Spain and The Universidad Carlos III de Madrid(UC3M) on Nov 24, 2010.

    Internship

    Internship selection for the 2009-11 batch of students was held in IIIT-B campusspanning over two weeks in early November. Totally, 24 firms participated in theselection process, ranging from Research Labs of MNCs, R&D companies, finance/banking firms, and start-ups. This year, about 20 students are doing their thesiswith the professors of the institute under funded projects or collaboration withcompanies. The process is almost complete with all but one student either beingplaced for internship or opting to do thesis.
